Russia carried out a major aerial strike on Ukraine on Friday (Dec 13) morning, deploying cruise missiles and drones to target energy infrastructure, particularly in the western border regions. The attack is part of a renewed campaign against Ukraine’s electricity network, which has already caused extended power outages for millions of civilians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia used 93 missiles and over 200 drones in the attack. He added that Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 81 of the missiles, with 11 downed by F-16 fighter jets. Ukraine’s air force also reported that the attack included hypersonic Kinzhal missiles launched from the air. “This is Putin’s ‘peace plan’ – destroy everything. This is how he wants negotiations, by terrorising millions of people,” Zelensky said in response to the strikes. Instead, we must deprive it of the means of terror. I reiterate my call for the urgent delivery of 20 NASAMS, HAWK, or IRIS-T air defence systems.” Russia’s defence ministry confirmed the attack, describing it as retaliation for Ukraine’s use of US-supplied ATACMS missiles against a southern Russian airfield earlier in the week. “In response to the use of American long-range weapons, a massive strike was carried out by the Russian armed forces... against critical facilities of Ukraine's fuel and energy infrastructure,” read a statement on Telegram. Kremlin dismisses the possibility of peace talks The Kremlin dismissed the possibility of peace talks, saying its conditions for negotiations had not yet been met. Birthday boy Jasprit Bumrah became the first bowler this year and the third Indian seamer overall to complete 50 or more Test wickets in a calendar year. Bumrah unlocked this feat against Australia during day one of the second BGT Test (Day/Night Test) at the Adelaide Oval by picking their opener, Usman Khawaja, caught in the slips on 13. Meanwhile, Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan are the other two Indians who achieved this.

While Kapil did it twice (75 wickets in 1983 and 74 wickets in 1979), Zaheer bagged this milestone once (51 wickets in 2002). However, late Australian great Shane Warne topped the chart with 95 wickets in 2005.

Bumrah featured in 11 Tests in 2024, missing just one, and despite India playing plenty of games at home this year, Bumrah pips the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, marking a stunning 2024 for him, where he even won the T20 World Cup in the Americas.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing Test, Bumrah shared the new ball with Mohammed Siraj in the second innings, and unlike how it unfolded twice in the previous game, India failed to pick any wicket up front. But soon after, he provided India with the breakthrough; coming over the wicket to the left-handed Khawaja, Bumrah found a neat edge that went straight to the first slip as the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma grabbed it comfortably.

After electing to bowl first in this Pink-Ball Test, India got all out on 180, with Aussie quick Mitchell Starc returning with his best Test figures of 6/48. For the visitors, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy top-scored with 42.

Bumrah captained India in the first BGT Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth, picking eight for 72 across two innings, including a five-for in the first. Though he remained the ultimate thorn in the flesh for the Aussies, breaking their back in the series opener with early strikes, Bumrah impressed everyone with his leadership skills, helping India win the Test and draw first blood in the five-match marquee series.

With Rohit returning to the playing XI for the second Test, he took over the captaincy hat while Bumrah remains the leader of the pace attack.

Ukraine will not lower the age for drafting soldiers for the war against Russia, despite calls from key ally the United States, a senior official told AFP Thursday. Washington is pressing Kyiv to consider drafting men from the age of 18 instead of the current 25, to plug manpower shortages on the frontlines. "Our position is as transparent as possible: we will not lower the mobilisation age," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP. Last month, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Ukraine "needs to do more, in our view, to firm up its lines in terms of the number of forces it has on the front lines." A senior official from outgoing US President Joe Biden's administration said in November Ukraine was facing an "existential" recruitment crunch. Pressed on what Washington considers an appropriate minimum age for conscription, the official replied that "we think there's real value in them considering lowering the recruiting age to 18" -- in line with the US benchmark. 'This is not World War 1,' Ukraine snubs US call to lower draft age: Report

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Tuesday (Dec 3) sidestepped the question about war-torn Ukraine's membership into the intergovernmental military alliance.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Tuesday (Dec 3) sidestepped the question about war-torn Ukraine's membership into the intergovernmental military alliance. Secretary-General Rutte said during a press conference that the priority now must be to strengthen Ukraine's hand in any future peace talks with Russia by sending it more weapons, the news agency Associated Press reported. “The front is not moving eastwards. It is slowly moving westwards,” Rutte said. “So we have to make sure that Ukraine gets into a position of strength, and then it should be for the Ukrainian government to decide on the next steps, in terms of opening peace talks and how to conduct them,” he added. 'Ukraine will not settle for any alternatives...' Rutte's remarks on Tuesday came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that extending NATO membership to territory now under Kyiv's control could end the "hot stage" of the war. President Zelensky argued that once open conflict ends, any proposal to join NATO could be extended to all parts of the country that fall under internationally recognised borders. Also read | US announces $725 mn in military aid for Ukraine Upon being pressed on this fact by reporters, Rutte said, "I would argue, let’s not have all these discussions step by step on what a peace process might look like." As he made these remarks, Ukrainian officials made it clear that they would not countenance any half measures or stopgap solutions on NATO membership. In a statement, the foreign ministry said that Ukraine “will not settle for any alternatives, surrogates or substitutes for Ukraine’s full membership in NATO.” The ministry also cited Kyiv's bitter experience of the Budapest Memorandum. What is the Budapest Memorandum? In early December 1994, leaders of the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), and the Russian Federation met in Hungary's capital Budapest to pledge security assurances to Ukraine in connection with its accession to the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear-weapons state. According to a publication by the Harvard Kennedy School, the signature of the memorandum concluded arduous negotiations that resulted in Ukraine’s agreement to relinquish the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal, which the country inherited from the collapsed Soviet Union, and transfer all nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantlement. The signatories (of the memorandum) pledged to respect Kyiv’s territorial integrity and inviolability of its borders and to refrain from the use or threat of military force. Also watch | Russia's win will damage our security: Starmer × Russia breached these commitments with its annexation of Crimea in 2014 and aggression in eastern Ukraine, the publication said. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian foreign ministry called the memorandum a “monument to short-sightedness in making strategic security decisions.” “We are convinced that the only real guarantee of security for Ukraine, as well as a deterrent for further Russian aggression against Ukraine and other states, is Ukraine’s full membership in NATO,” the ministry statement said. Russia-Ukraine war: NATO chief sidesteps talk of Kyiv's membership, says 'priority is...'

Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Ukraine on Monday to reaffirm German support for Kyiv after becoming the first major ally of the war-torn country to speak to Vladimir Putin in years to urge negotiations.

His surprise visit comes as Ukrainian forces are buckling across the eastern front amid fears about future US support once Donald Trump returns to the White House in January.

Russia launched another aerial barrage of hundreds of drones hours before Scholz arrived, leaving one dead and three wounded in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil.

Scholz said he would meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and announce another package of military support worth 650 million euros ($680 million) to be delivered by the end of the year.

"I would like to make it clear here on the ground that Germany will remain Ukraine's strongest supporter in Europe," said Scholz, who faces new elections in February after his coalition collapsed last month.

"Ukraine can rely on Germany -- we say what we do. And we do what we say," he added in a post on social media.

Scholz in mid-November spurred controversy and concern in Ukraine by becoming the first Western leader in years to speak by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Low Kremlin expectations for visit

Zelensky at the time slammed the call, saying it had opened a "Pandora's Box" by weakening Putin's international isolation.

In the call, Scholz condemned the war and "urged Russia to show willingness to negotiate with Ukraine with the aim of achieving a just and lasting peace", the chancellor's office said.

The Kremlin said Monday that it had no expectations from Scholz's visit.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Ukraine on Monday to reaffirm German support for Kyiv after becoming the first major ally of the war-torn country to speak to Vladimir Putin in years to urge negotiations.

Low Kremlin expectations for visit Zelensky at the time slammed the call, saying it had opened a "Pandora's Box" by weakening Putin's international isolation. In the call, Scholz condemned the war and "urged Russia to show willingness to negotiate with Ukraine with the aim of achieving a just and lasting peace", the chancellor's office said. The Kremlin said Monday that it had no expectations from Scholz's visit. "I would not say we have expectations from this visit. Germany is continuing its line of unconditional support to Ukraine," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that Putin had not passed on a message to Zelensky through Scholz. Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the country's budget plans, raising next year's military spending to record levels as Russia seeks to prevail in its war against Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the country's budget plans, raising next year's military spending to record levels as Russia seeks to prevail in its war against Ukraine. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Sunday (Dec. 1), around 32.5 per cent of the budget posted on a government website was allocated for defence, amounting to more than $145 billion. This is up from a reported 28.3 per cent this year. Spending on war and law enforcement exceeds other expenditures A report by The Kyiv Independent said that in the upcoming Russian budget, the spending on war and law enforcement agencies exceeds the expenditures on education, healthcare, social policy, and the national economy combined. Also read | Zelensky says 'hot phase of war' with Russia could end in exchange for NATO membership The budget also envisaged that military spending would be slightly lower in 2026-2027: around $114.9 billion in 2026 and $122.4 billion in 2027. Zelensky signs law on Ukraine's budget for 2025 Putin approved Russia's budget plans just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law his country's budget for next year. The Kyiv Independent report on Sunday said that Kyiv's budget for 2025 envisaged spending $53 billion on Ukraine's defence, which is 26.3 per cent of the country's projected gross domestic product (GDP). Ukraine has been getting billions of dollars in help from its Western allies, but Russia’s forces are bigger and better equipped. In recent months, the Russian army has gradually been pushing Ukrainian troops backward in eastern areas. In the latest news from the conflict, Ukrainian officials said that Moscow sent 78 drones into Ukraine overnight on Sunday. A total of 32 drones were destroyed, and a further 45 drones were lost, likely having been electronically jammed, the Ukrainian Air Force said. (With inputs from agencies)

Energy workers in war-torn Ukraine are carrying out repairs in the country's power facilities despite Russia targeting the country's power grid, a report by the news agency Associated Press late Friday (Nov 29) said. Since the Russia-Ukraine war began in late February 2022, repeated Russian strikes on infrastructure have seriously impacted Ukraine’s energy sector often resulting in rolling blackouts across the country. Also read | Trump's envoy for Ukraine-Russia has hinted at plan to end war. It's carrots and sticks for both On Thursday, Russia launched another large-scale attack on Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities said that nearly 200 drones and missiles targeted infrastructure, disrupting power supply to more than a million people. 'This is our life now' Russian attack on Thursday damaged a DTEK power plant. DTEK operated around 20 per cent of Ukraine’s electricity production before the full-scale invasion, but this figure dropped to 12 per cent since the war broke out. Speaking to the Associated Press, Oleksandr- head of the Production Management Department at a power plant operated by the DTEK, said, "This is our life now. Workers at a thermal power plant that’s supposed to produce electricity are walking on frozen floors and using firewood to keep warm." Oleksandr said that since the plant was first attacked in November 2022, it has been unable to return to full capacity due to continuous strikes that have left critical equipment in ruins. He added that he expected repairs at the station to continue through the winter into next year, and potentially far beyond. Only half of DTEK’s generating capacities have been restored since the first attacks on its plants in November 2022 until the latest large-scale strike. Earlier this week, the United States (US) and the European Commission announced a donation of $112 million in equipment and construction materials to help DTEK prepare for the winter. This comes months after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the G7 and other allied countries allocated over $4 billion in energy assistance to Ukraine. (With inputs from agencies)

Whether Keith Kellogg, United States President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, will end the ongoing war is a major question many observers are asking. A hint of what he could do if he assumes charge is emerging from his recent writings.

A similar 'carrots and sticks' policy was suggested for Russia too.

The US, which hasn't sent a single boot to the ground while propping up Ukraine with military aid, now wants Ukrainians as young as 18 to fight the war against Russia.

The Joe Biden administration is urging Ukraine to lower the minimum age for conscription for Ukrainians to 18, according to US media reports.

This is taking place even as the US is planning to send more arms to Ukraine, worth $725 million.

President Volodymir Zelenskyy is meanwhile going to raise taxes for Urkainians in order to improve funding for the war.

Citing a senior US official, the Associated Press news agency reported on Wednesday (Nov 27) that the request to lower the draft age is being made so that Ukraine can increase the size of its military.
