"The town of Kostyantynivka came under rocket fire during the night of March 24. One of the rockets hit a single-storey building," the emergency services said on Telegram.

Of those killed, three were women and two were men, the services informed. The latest attack comes as Moscow's forces push to capture the industrial Donetsk region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops are preparing to launch a counterattack as Russia's offensive begins to falter, a commander said. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that without a faster supply of arms the war could last years.

The Ukrainian military said early on Friday that 1,020 Russian troops had been killed over the previous 24 hours. Moscow's troops had launched unsuccessful attacks on the towns of Lyman, Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtarske, the military said. But their main focus was still the mining town of Bakhmut.

"The enemy has not stopped its assault of Bakhmut," Ukraine's General Staff said in a report.

Moscow on Wednesday (March 22) slammed the United Kingdom over the supply of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukrainian forces amid the ongoing war and also warned of prospects of "serious escalation" and added that Russia would be forced to respond accordingly.

Russia slams UK for sending depleted uranium shells to Ukraine, calls it ‘serious escalation’

The United Kingdom (UK) has defended sending depleted uranium shells to war-torn Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin's warning, according to a report by BBC early Wednesday (March 22). On Tuesday, Putin had said that Moscow would be forced to react if the UK gave Kyiv military supplies, including armour-piercing ammunition which contains depleted uranium.

"The United Kingdom... announced not only the supply of tanks to Ukraine but also shells with depleted uranium. If this happens, Russia will be forced to react," Putin told reporters after meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Earlier, the British government had confirmed that it would provide Ukraine with the armour-piercing rounds alongside Challenger two tanks, but insisted they have a low risk of radiation. A statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that depleted uranium is a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons, the BBC reported early Wednesday.

"Russia knows this but is deliberately trying to disinform. Independent research by scientists from groups such as the Royal Society has assessed that any impact to personal health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is likely to be low," the statement added.

Colonel Hamish de Breton-Gordon, a former British Army tank commander, said that Russian President Putin's comments were classic disinformation. Colonel Gordon said that depleted uranium rounds used by Challenger 2 tanks contained only trace elements of depleted uranium, the report added.

Depleted uranium is a by-product of the nuclear enriching process used to make nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons. It is around 60 per cent as radioactive as natural uranium. Its heaviness lends itself to use in armour-piercing rounds as it helps them easily penetrate steel.

However, the United Nations Environment Programme has described it as a "chemically and radiologically toxic heavy metal."

CND, an anti-nuclear organisation, condemned the decision to send armour-piercing ammunition to Ukraine, calling it an "additional environmental and health disaster for those living through the conflict".

CND general secretary Kate Hudson said that the organisation repeatedly called for the British government "to place an immediate moratorium on the use of depleted uranium weapons and to fund long-term studies into their health and environmental impacts," the news agency AFP reported.

Ukraine war: UK defends sending uranium ammo to Kyiv after Putin's warning, says report

Chinese President Xi Jinping departed Moscow on Wednesday (March 22) after his crucial state visit during which he held talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The visit was highly significant amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions as the two nations showed a unified front against the West.

Putin and Xi called each other "dear friends" and hailed a "new era" in their nations' ties. The leaders discussed a range of issues of mutual interest and signed a few economic proposals, but there was no apparent breakthrough on ending the war in Ukraine despite Beijing touting it a "visit for peace".

Moreover, the joint statement, which was issued after Putin and Xi's meeting, hints that both nations want to keep the ongoing Ukraine conflict away from the G20 by not raising or mentioning it. The statement issued following meeting of Putin and Jinping indicates the two countries will jointly oppose the raising of the Ukraine crisis at the G20, just as they have done at two key ministerial meetings hosted by India.

It also mentioned that they will jointly promote the invigorated spirit of solidarity and cooperation within the G20, and support the leading role of the association in such areas as the international fight against epidemics, world economic recovery, inclusive sustainable development, etc.

The statement also stated that they stand against attempts by external forces to undermine security and stability in their "common adjacent regions".

Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his whirlwind tour of Russia on Thursday and departed for Beijing, reported Russian news agencies. Xi received a guard of honour at Moscow's Vnukovo airport as Russian and Chinese national anthems were played in the background. Xi arrived in Moscow on Monday to meet his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin. The leaders attempted to strengthen bilateral relations while sending a message that the two powerful nations were not cowering down in face of threats issued by the western countries. Targetting western bloc The joint statement issued after the summit took potshots at the western countries by terming them as the 'confrontational bloc' which did not want the war to end. “Russia reaffirmed that it was committed to restarting peace talks as soon as possible, and China expressed its approval,” read an excerpt from the joint statement. “Settlement of the Ukraine crisis must respect the reasonable security concerns of every country and prevent the formation of confrontational blocs that add fuel to the flames,” it added. China’s peace plan for Ukraine Since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, China has established a "no-limits" friendship with Russia where it has refused to denounce Moscow's aggressiveness, all the while presenting itself as impartial. However, prior to Xi's arrival in Russia, Beijing had prepared a 12-point peace plan for ending the war. The paper reiterates Beijing's talking points for Ukraine. However, the western world is wary that Beijing's plan will allow Putin to “freeze” its territorial gains in the country. Facing severe economic sanctions and being isolated on the world stage, the visit by Xi may have come as a booster shot of confidence for Putin. Increased bonhomie between Russia-China The summit between the duo was marked by pomp as the exchanges suggested a growing bonhomie. During one of the meetings, Xi said he was convinced that the Russian people will be voting en masse for the Kremlin chief in next year's presidential election. "I know Russia will hold a presidential election," said Xi in Mandarin. "Under your strong leadership, Russia has made great strides in its prosperous development. I am confident that the Russian people will continue to give you their firm support." While Xi called Putin a 'dear friend', the latter jokingly said he was 'envious' of the progress made by Beijing in recent times. "In recent years, China has made a tremendous leap forward in its development," Putin said. "It arouses genuine interest all over the world, and even we envy you a little." WATCH | Xi Jinping: China values relationship with Russia × Strengthening economic partnership The two leaders also declared an enduring economic partnership under which more Russian energy will be brought to China while more Chinese enterprises will be welcomed in Moscow. "The growth of China-Russia relations has not only brought tangible benefits to the people of our two countries, but also made important contributions to the development and progress of the world," said Xi. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (March 20) told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that their countries shared many "common goals" and also said that it was "symbolic" that the Chinese leader chose to travel to Russia for the first foreign visit of his new term. The Chinese president landed in Moscow earlier in the day for his first state visit to Russia since the Ukraine war started last year in February. He intends to impart a "new momentum" to bilateral ties during the crucial visit. The Russian news agencies reported that on the runway of a Moscow airport, Xi said he is "confident the visit will be fruitful and give new momentum to the healthy and stable development of Chinese-Russian relations". The remarks were in reference to comments by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, who last week said that Xi and Putin would sign documents ushering in closer ties. As quoted by the Russian news agencies, Xi also said, "In a world of volatility and transformation, China will continue to work with Russia to safeguard the international system with the UN at its core." Beijing came up with the so-called peace plan in the form of a 12-point foreign ministry paper for a gradual de-escalation between the warring nations. Xi in Moscow: Putin says ready to discuss China's Ukraine plan

Russia reacted angrily on Friday (March 17) on Poland and Slovakia'a decision to provide fighter jets to Ukraine, warning they will be "destroyed".

"The supply of this military equipment -- as we have repeatedly said -- will not change the outcome of the special military operation... Of course, all this equipment will be destroyed," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, using the official term for Russian invasion of Ukraine.

West's supply of weapons to Ukraine has always angered Moscow, which had accused the western countries to try to prolong the conflict. Russia attacked Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in the initial months of the war, Russian forces had to retreat from large swathes of land. In addition to efforts by Ukrainian forces, Russian retreat was also attributed to Western help in the form of humanitarian aid and weapons.

Ukraine's European backers had stopped short of providing fighter jets to Ukraine for fears of escalation of the conflict. But now, Slovakia and Poland have agreed to provide fighter jets to Ukraine.

"We will hand over 13 of our MiG-29 jets to Ukraine," Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger told journalists on Friday, adding that Bratislava would also deliver a Kub air defence system to Ukraine.

"We're giving these MiGs to Ukraine so that it can protect civilians against the many bombs that fall on their houses and which are the reason why people are dying in Ukraine," Heger said.

Poland on Thursday said Warsaw would send four Soviet-made MiG-29 jets to Ukraine "in the coming days".

Ukraine has long requested fighter jets from Western allies, although seeking primarily modern US-made F-16s.

After Crimea, Russian President Vladimir Putin visits occupied Mariupol in Ukraine for the first time

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Monday on a three-day visit where he met Vladimir Putin and held talks with Russian President. Putin told Xi Jinping that he had looked at China's proposals for a resolution of the Ukraine conflict and that he viewed them with respect.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping

Russia’s assault on Ukraine is turning into a war of attrition and the defenders are facing a critical problem – they are firing more artillery shells than Ukraine or its allies can produce. Which means industrial capacity is becoming as important as combat soldiers are.

Along much of a 600-mile front in the east and south, the combatants face each other from trenches reminiscent of World War I. The similarities of the horrifying conditions are so startling that scenes from an Oscar-winning movie set in the 1914-1918 war (All Quiet on the Western Front) look like video taken in Ukraine yesterday.

While Russia’s supplies are also shrinking, its inventory was much larger to begin with and Ukraine’s shortage is more critical, military experts estimate. On average, the opposing armies fire around 30,000 shells at each other every day.

To get this in perspective, one of the biggest ammunition factories in the United States, the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, produces roughly 11,000 shells per month. Capacity at this and other plants in the US and its allies is planned to increase substantially but the process will take months.

The present stalemate has raised fears that China, Moscow’s closest ally, would step into the breach and draw from its ample arsenal of 122 mm and 152 mm shells to help out Russian forces for whom this is the standard calibre.

US officials have repeatedly warned China that providing lethal aid to Russia would have serious consequences and made clear that President Xi Jinping's visit to Moscow, beginning on Monday, would be watched with very close attention.

The visit will go down in history even if it ends without any notable agreements. Xi Jinping arrives to pomp and circumstance just three days after the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued a warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes in Ukraine.

The warrant is based on the ICC’s finding that Russian forces, with the blessing of Putin and one of his cabinet ministers, forcefully deported hundreds of Ukrainian children to Russia from areas seized after the 2022 invasion.

In theory, Putin could be arrested in any of the 123 countries which signed the treaty establishing the court. In practice, it is a symbolic move, given that Russia does not recognise the court and it cannot try a defendant in absentia.

Another historical first: Putin, a president accused of war crimes and facing an arrest warrant plays host to another president, Xi Jinping, who has been accused by the United States and several other countries of committing genocide against China’s Uyghur population and other Muslim ethnic groups in the Xinjiang region.

The Chinese leader’s visit comes a week after Putin hosted President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, where Russian air power turned the tide in a 12-year civil war killed nearly half a million people and displaced almost half the country’s pre-war population.

Among the weapons Assad’s government forces used to stay in power was the nerve agent Sarin and chlorine gas used to kill civilians in opposition strongholds, according to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. They are forbidden under the Geneva Conventions on the conduct of armed conflict.

Putin’s welcoming, in quick succession, of leaders who scoff at international conventions, democracy and the rule of law brings to mind the old adage “birds of a feather flock together.”

A Chinese government statement announcing Xi Jinping’s visit left no doubt about his ambition to become the dominant figure on the world stage, surpassing the role US presidents have played since the end of World War II.

“As the world enters a new period of turbulence and change, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and an important power, the significance and influence of China-Russian relations go far beyond the bilateral scope,“ the statement said.

The visit was aimed, it added, at deepening the Chinese-Russian friendship “for generations.”

Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow fresh from a diplomatic triumph in the Middle East, where the United States has been the dominant power broker for decades. But in a surprise move on March 10, Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to restore diplomatic relations after four days of secret talks in Beijing.

It was stark evidence of China’s rising power and influence on the global diplomatic stage. Saudi Arabia and Iran, both oil-rich nations, have long been rivals for Middle Eastern dominance and China’s role in their rapprochement drew applause from the United Nations.

Last month, the Chinese government published a 12-point position paper on how to end the war in Ukraine which will be a topic of discussion during the Chinese leader’s visit. The plan is part of an effort by China to portray itself as neutral in the conflict -- despite its repeated refusal to condemn the invasion in UN General Assembly votes.

The proposal pointedly omitted a call for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory they occupy, a move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sees as a precondition for any negotiations on halting the bloodshed. He has, however, said he is open to talks that might follow Xi’s Moscow visit.

The Chinese plan calls for an immediate ceasefire, an idea that has run into vocal opposition from the United States, which has been leading a Western coalition of 50 countries to arm and finance Ukraine’s fight against the Russians.

“A ceasefire now would amount to the ratification of Russian conquest,” John Kirby, spokesman of the White House National Security Council, said on the eve of Xi Jun Ping’s Moscow visit.

“Russia would be free to use a ceasefire to only further entrench their positions in Ukraine, to rebuild, refit and refresh their forces so they can restart attacks on Ukraine at the time of their choosing.”

All wars end eventually, but the prospect of the guns soon falling silent in this conflict appear very remote. Both sides are preparing for spring offensives.

Putin’s welcoming, in quick succession, of leaders who scoff at international conventions, democracy and the rule of law brings to mind the old adage “birds of a feather flock together.” A Chinese government statement announcing Xi Jinping’s visit left no doubt about his ambition to become the dominant figure on the world stage, surpassing the role US presidents have played since the end of World War II. “As the world enters a new period of turbulence and change, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and an important power, the significance and influence of China-Russian relations go far beyond the bilateral scope,“ the statement said. The visit was aimed, it added, at deepening the Chinese-Russian friendship “for generations.” Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow fresh from a diplomatic triumph in the Middle East, where the United States has been the dominant power broker for decades. “Russia would be free to use a ceasefire to only further entrench their positions in Ukraine, to rebuild, refit and refresh their forces so they can restart attacks on Ukraine at the time of their choosing.” All wars end eventually, but the prospect of the guns soon falling silent in this conflict appear very remote. Both sides are preparing for spring offensives. Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer. With Ukraine war at critical junction, China takes bigger role

Moscow is willing to explore serious solutions for settling the Ukrainian crisis but will not accept ultimatums, according to a statement released on Saturday by Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry.

When commenting on Ukrainian foreign minister Dmitry Kuleba’s remark about the significance of Zelensky’s "peace formula," she said: "Unfortunately, it is another attempt by the Ukrainian authorities to mislead the international community and its own people," as reported by Tass news agency.

"Zelensky’s so-called ‘peace formula’ has nothing to do with peace. It is just a list of ultimatum demands for Russia, which are detached from reality. The plan particularly demands that Russian troops be withdrawn from Russian regions (the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions and even Crimea), Russia pay reparations and even plead guilty at international tribunals. The goal of the Ukrainian ‘peace formula’ is to make Russia surrender with Western help," Zakharova noted.

"We have repeatedly stated that we are open to really serious proposals from the West and Ukraine on finding a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis but we will not accept the language of ultimatums," the Russian diplomat added.

In addition, the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine need to take place, all threats coming from its territory need to be eliminated and its non-nuclear status needs to be guaranteed along with respect for the rights of Russian speakers and ethnic minorities," Zakharova said.

Russia-Ukraine war: Putin discusses Mariupol reconstruction plans during surprise visit

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Saturday (March 18) that his government would follow the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation of Russian President Vladimir Putin "with great interest". Addressing a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Tokyo, Kishida said, "The ICC has announced that it has issued an arrest warrant for (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin, and ICC Prosecutor (Karim) Khan has stated that this is the first concrete step in an ongoing investigation. Our country will continue to monitor the progress of this investigation with great interest," the news agency Reuters reported.

Kishida added that he and Scholz reaffirmed the importance of Japan and Germany uniting with like-minded countries to end the Russian aggression as soon as possible and to continue strict sanctions against Russia and strong support for Ukraine.

German Chancellor Scholz, while welcoming ICC's decision on Putin, said that no one was above the law. “I don’t have a lot to add. No one is above the law. That’s a very important pillar of international law. We all know that the International Criminal Court is an important institution which was given its mandate through international treaties,” Scholz told reporters.

Apart from Japan and Germany, several other world leaders including United States president Joe Biden, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell hailed the decision.

On Friday, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleging that Moscow's forcible deportation of Ukrainian children is a war crime. Putin is the third head of the state to be indicted by the ICC while still in power. The ICC's 123 member states are obliged to detain and transfer the Russian president if he sets foot on their territory.

Ukraine said that the arrest warrant (against Putin) was just an initial step in restoring justice over Moscow's offensive. "The world received a signal that the Russian regime is criminal and its leadership and henchmen will be held accountable," Ukraine's Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said on social media.

Kostin added that world leaders would think thrice before shaking Putin's hand or sitting down at the negotiating table with him.

Pretext of Iraq war just an ‘excuse’: Tony Blair denounces Putin’s Ukraine invasion

The European Command of the United States military on Thursday (March 16), released the footage of the critical encounter which happened between an American surveillance drone and Russian fighter jet over the Black Sea earlier this week.

The US military said that a Russian Su-27 fighter jet downed an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, and called it a "reckless" incident. US Air Force General James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa, said: "Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9."

In the video released by the Pentagon, the Russian military jet can be seen coming very close to a US military drone and dumping fuel near it. The US said that the Russian aircraft damaged the propeller during the intercept.

The Pentagon said that the de-classified video, which is about 40 seconds long, has been edited by the US military for length but shows events in a sequential order.

Meanwhile, Russia has denied the accusations levelled by the US that its jets acted recklessly. Moscow said that the drone crashed after making "sharp manoeuvres," having "provocatively" flown close to Russian air space near Crimea.

Polish President Andrzej Duda on Thursday (March 16) said that Warsaw is set to provide Ukraine with four MiG-29 fighter jets in the coming days amid the ongoing war. With this announcement, Poland becomes the first North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) country to do so after Ukraine's persistent requests of supplying warplanes.

Duda said that Poland has around a dozen of MIGs that it got in the 90s when the aircraft were handed down from the German Democratic Republic. He mentioned that the jets are functional and play a part in the defence of the nation's airspace. He agreed that the fighter jets are at the end of their operational life but insisted that they are "still functional."

Poland to send Ukraine four MiG-29 fighter jets, becomes first NATO nation to do so

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, on Friday (March 17) awarded the two pilots who were involved in intercepting a United States MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea amid Moscow’s ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine. This comes after the US has previously accused Russia of an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” intercept of its MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone which eventually crashed in the Black Sea on Tuesday.

The Russian military has said that they scrambled the air defence unit jets after detecting the US drone but has denied causing the crash and said that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) had lost control, a claim the US disputed. While repeating its version of the events, the Russian ministry announced the awards on Friday.

“As a result of sharp manoeuvring around 9:30 am (Moscow time), the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface,” said the Russian military in a statement, as per Reuters.

The defence minister Shoigu presented the awards to the two Su-27 pilots for “preventing” the US drone from “violating” international airspace restrictions placed by Moscow amid what it describes as its “special military operation” in Ukraine, reported The Moscow Times.

The statement added, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace usage regime established for the special military operation (and) communicated to all users of international airspace.”

The US military, which also released a 42-second video on Thursday of the incident said that the drone was on a routine mission when it was intercepted over the Black Sea in international airspace. It also alleged that the fighter jets dumped fuel on the drone during the encounter that lasted 30-40 minutes before one of MQ-9 Reaper drone’s propellers got damaged and it crashed into the sea.

"These MiGs are still in service in Poland's air force. They're in their last years of operation but are still for the most part in full working order," the president said.
Polish, Slovak jets sent to Ukraine will be destroyed: Kremlin

The Kremlin on Friday reacted to Poland and Slovak's decision to send warplanes to Ukraine. The Kremlin said that such fighter jets would be destroyed, and reiterated that Western arms deliveries to Kyiv would not change Moscow's military aims.

"The supply of this military equipment -- as we have repeatedly said -- will not change the outcome of the special military operation... Of course, all this equipment will be destroyed," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a press conference.
