China, on Monday (Jan 8) said that its security agencies have detained a foreign national who was the head of a foreign consulting firm for allegedly spying for the British Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6.

What do we know about the allegations?

The claim was made by the Chinese spy agency Ministry of State Security’s (MSS) WeChat account which accused the MI6 of forming an “intelligence cooperation relationship” with a foreign national with the surname Huang.

However, the Chinese officials did not mention the detained individual’s full name, or nationality or identify the company that they were working at.

According to the MSS, Huang was in charge of an overseas consulting agency, and in 2015 the individual was contacted by the MI6 and began working with them on intelligence matters.

The MI6 directed Huang to enter China several times and instructed them to use public identity as a cover to collect China-related intelligence, including identifying potential assets for the British agency, the MSS said.

Huang allegedly passed 17 pieces of intelligence, including confidential state secrets, to MI6 before he was identified, according to the Chinese spy agency. It also claimed that Huang was trained by the MI6 and given professional spying equipment for intelligence cross-linking.

“After careful investigation, the state security organs promptly discovered evidence of Huang’s involvement in espionage activities, and took criminal coercive measures against him,” said the MSS.

The Chinese government did not disclose Huang’s current condition or whereabouts.

The recent allegations by the MSS came amid an ongoing row between the United Kingdom and China in the past couple of months over allegations of perceived espionage and its impact on national security.

New research commissioned by ukactive, a not-for-profit body of members and partners across the UK physical activity and fitness sector reveals that over 55 per cent of people joining gyms consider their membership crucial in managing short- or long-term health conditions.

As the new year begins, many people in the UK have set fitness goals. A significant 78 per cent of surveyed gym-goers attest to the positive impact of regular exercise on their mental health and overall well-being. This finding highlights the growing recognition of fitness facilities as community spaces fostering mental health support.

Improved sleep through exercise

Two-thirds (66 per cent) of respondents report that engaging in regular exercise contributes to better sleep quality.

Huw Edwards, ukactive’s chief executive, told The Guardian about the growing recognition of the value of physical activity in leading fulfilling lives.

“It’s reassuring to see people getting such crucial benefits from physical activity and more are now seeing fitness and leisure facilities as places in the community that can really help them look after their health and wellbeing,” he said.

An aviation firm has recently achieved a remarkable feat by creating jet fuel entirely derived from human excreta. The breakthrough, conducted by scientists in a Gloucestershire laboratory, introduces an innovative solution to the aviation industry's quest for sustainable and low-carbon fuel alternatives.

The CEO of Firefly Green Fuels, James Hygate, explained to the BBC the motivation behind their unconventional choice of feedstock. Seeking a highly abundant and low-value resource, the team recognised the abundance of human waste, making it a promising candidate for transforming into eco-friendly jet fuel.

International aviation regulators conducted independent tests, affirming that the sewage-derived jet fuel closely resembles conventional fossil jet fuel. This validation positions the innovation as a credible and viable alternative in the aviation fuel landscape.

Collaborating with Cranfield University, Firefly delved into assessing the life cycle carbon impact of their fuel. The findings revealed a staggering 90 per cent reduction in carbon footprint compared to standard jet fuel.

James Hygate emphasised a crucial distinction in their fuel – the absence of fossil carbon. Despite sharing chemical similarities with fossil-based kerosene, Firefly's jet fuel stands out as a genuinely fossil-free alternative. This aligns with the global imperative to transition towards cleaner and greener energy sources.

Following the winding up of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's wife Akshata Murthy's start-up investment firm Catamaran Ventures in December last year, the country's main opposition party has raised questions about the impact of the closure on other companies.

UK: Labour party questions Akshata Murthy over closure of company

The UK's opposition Labour Party, gearing up for the general elections, has targeted PM Rishi Sunak, alleging that in his tax cuts the public is getting a "raw deal". The ad which attacked Sunak's economic policies said that for every 10 euros of extra taxes on working people, the Sunak government would give 2 euros back to the public. "Families will be 1200 euros worse off," the advertorial further read. The ad was unveiled by Labour in the Conservative-held seat of Wellingborough as the town readies for by-elections in 2024.

Wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Akshata Murty's now-liquidated firm Catamaran Ventures has also come under scrutiny once again. While commenting on the recent liquidation of Akshata Murty's investment venture, Catamaran Ventures, Labour's national campaign coordinator and shadow minister Pat MacFadden, shared a letter on social media dated January 4.

The letter was addressed to UK Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the closure of Murty's firm. "In the past few months, numerous reports about the business dealings of Catamaran Ventures have circulated," stated MacFadden's letter.

"It was revealed that the firm run by the Prime Minister's wife received GBP 2m through government Covid support schemes devised by Rishi Sunak himself. It then emerged businesses in which Ms. Murty had invested went bust, costing taxpayers GBP 1m."

Royal Navy, in an unprecedented move, has resorted to advertising a high-ranking position on social media. The £150,000-a-year rear-admiral role was posted on LinkedIn in December. This comes as the Navy struggled to find a suitable candidate, leaving one former senior submariner to dub the situation as "utterly shameful".

Reports said that the only applicant for the director of submarines position was an unqualified weapons engineer commodore. The candidate for which the job was posted was to be selected for a top-notch position in the Royal Navy. The selected person was supposed to take over from Rear-Admiral Simon Asquith.

Moreover, he was to be responsible for overseeing "elite operations" and the nation’s nuclear deterrent.

Reactions pour in

Reacting to the unusual recruitment method, one user reportedly commented, "I'll do it - but is the advertisement a scam. Surely not how the appointment is made." Another former submariner, with 35 years of Navy experience, expressed concern, stating, "Nice little bit of intelligence I am sure our Russian friends will have noted!"

Reactions pour in Reacting to the unusual recruitment method, one user reportedly commented, "I'll do it - but is the advertisement a scam. Surely not how the appointment is made." Another former submariner, with 35 years of Navy experience, expressed concern, stating, "Nice little bit of intelligence I am sure our Russian friends will have noted!" A 43-year-old Indian-origin man was awarded a jail term of nine months in the United Kingdom for masturbating in front of a woman on a London Underground train.

Identified as Mukesh Shah from Wembley in north London, the 43-year-old boarded the train at around 11:40 pm when the victim was travelling in an empty Piccadilly Line carriage between Sudbury Town and Acton Town.

He then sat diagonally opposite the woman, who noticed him staring at her before he exposed his genitals and started masturbating.

Shah's indecent act was captured by the victim who later reported the incident to British Transport Police (BTP) along with that video.

“This was a frightening and upsetting experience for the victim and I commend her bravery in confronting the offender, managing to capture an image of Shah and reporting this,” said BTP Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Mark Luker.

“Shah's disgusting actions have not only secured him time behind bars but restrictions following his release to prevent him from repeating his actions in the future. We will always take reports of sexual offences seriously and will do everything in our power to bring offenders to justice," he said.

The British Transport Police (BTP) said that Shah will be subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order over the incident, which took place on Nov 4, 2022.

“Despite the empty carriage, Shah sat diagonally opposite the victim and she noticed him staring at her, making her feel uncomfortable. It was then that she noticed he was exposing himself and masturbating,” BTP said in a statement.

“Bravely, the victim captured Shah on camera hoping it would deter him, when he didn't, she confronted him and told him to stop and move away from her. He protested he hadn't done anything wrong but moved along the carriage. The victim reported the incident to BTP along with the video, which was circulated within the police and led to the identification of Shah,” it added.

A study carried out by a UK think tank has revealed that bosses of Britain's biggest corporate companies have made more money in the first four days of the new year than the average British worker will make till the year-end, reported BBC. The study by High Pay Centre, the think tank, says that by lunchtime on Thursday (January 4) they had earned more than 34,963 pounds, the annual median wage of workers in Britain.

The centre says that top bosses will enjoy an average annual reward amount of 3.81 million pounds. This means that they are earning 1170 pounds per hour. This comes to 109 times what an average worker earns.

In order to surpass the yearly income of the average worker, lawyers in top cities in the country will have to wait a bit longer, but not too much. By the beginning of the next week, they will have crossed the mark.

When it comes to leading bankers, they will overtake the figure by January 17.

BBC reported that the High Pay Centre made the calculations based on salaries published by the companies in their annual reports.

The news outlet quoted the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which said there were "obscene levels of pay inequality".

There are reportedly occasional claims in the UK that top earners are not paid adequately in the UK.

"When politicians listen to these misguided views, it's unsurprising that we end up with massive inequality, and stagnating living standards for the majority of the population," said High Pay Centre director Luke Hildyard.

BBC quoted an interesting opinion of Professor Len Shackleton from the free-market think tank, the Institute of Economic Affairs. Shackleton said that since high-earning individuals paid a higher proportion of taxes, a crackdown on their earnings would lead to increased tax bills for others.

"Top earners pay stonking amounts in taxes: the top 1% of all earners in this country pay almost 30% of income tax. If we somehow stopped these people earning large amounts, many of them would leave the country and we would all have to pay higher taxes to compensate," he said.

"A CEO can make, or break, a company and therefore it's unsurprising they are paid generously," he said.

Two British mathematicians, David Stewart and David Cushing have decoded a strategic approach on how to win the UK national lottery.

The method devised by the two last July involved purchasing just 27 tickets from a pool of over 45 million possibilities.

To their surprise, their discovery became a major hit worldwide with many people trying the approach which yielded varied results.

The two mathematicians, Stewart and Cushing from the University of Manchester, do not guarantee a jackpot win, however, they claim that 27 is the minimum number of tickets required which if not a jackpot, can at least guarantee some kind of win.

In their research paper titled You Need 27 Tickets to Guarantee a Win on the UK National Lottery, Stewart and Cushing write, "In the UK National Lottery, players purchase tickets comprising their choices of six different numbers between 1 and 59. During the draw, six balls are randomly selected without replacement from a set numbered from 1 to 59."

They mentioned in their research paper how 27 tickets may ensure a prize in 45,057,474 possible draws, placing it as an optimal number of tickets required.

"A prize is awarded to any player who matches at least two of the six drawn numbers. We identify 27 tickets that guarantee a prize, regardless of which of the 45,057,474 possible draws occurs. Moreover, we determine that 27 is the optimal number of tickets required, as achieving the same guarantee with 26 tickets is not possible," said the mathematicians.

To determine the unique combinations, Stewart and Cushing applied a mathematical technique known as finite geometry. This approach involves arranging one to 59 either in pairs or triplets on various geometric shapes.

Thereafter, each set of numbers is connected to lines, further creating a sequence of six numbers, which equals one lottery ticket.

As per their findings, it requires 27 of these tickets to enclose all 59 numbers and make sure that at least one pair will match in any of the draws.
