"The plane (is) currently at the airport," an Air India spokesperson added in a statement, noting all the 327 passengers were being cared for inside a terminal.

Stansted Airport, around 35 miles (56 kilometres) northeast of London, said the Boeing 777 landed there 25 minutes after being diverted with police in attendance.

"It is parked on an isolated stand away from the normal airport operations," the airport added in a statement, noting its runway had fully reopened.

The Andhra Pradesh government put its machinery on high alert and positioned NDRF and State Disaster Response Force in five districts Saturday as the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal was set to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and cross the coast between Ongole and Kakinada on Monday.

The Met office said that coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu are likely to experience rainfall in the next two days with the system making landfall between Ongole and Kakinada in the neighbouring state on Monday.

A report from Amaravati, quoting State Disaster Management Authority Director Prasanna Venkatesh,said teams of National Disaster Response Force and SDRF have been positioned in the coastal districts of Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari and Visakhapatnam and the government machinery put on high alert.

He said two teams of SDRF (80 members) and two of NDRF (60 members) have been deployed in these districts with all necessary equipment for evacuation and rescue operations.

Sixteen teams of Andhra Pradesh Disaster Response and Fire Services have been kept on reserve at Rajamahendravaram, while another nine (of five members each) have been positioned in West Godavari district for road clearance, he said.

"Additionally,four teams of NDRF personnel have been sent to East Godavari district and another kept on standby at the 10th Battalion headquarters for ready movement," Venkatesh said.

East Godavari District Collector Kartikeya Misra declared a two-day holiday for all schools in eight coastal mandals in view of the cyclone threat.

State Chief Secretary Anil Chandra Punetha spoke to Collectors of all coastal districts and reviewed the preparedness to tackle the possible calamity.

Misra said that 50 relief camps have been opened in eight coastal mandals and four IAS officers stationed at Amalapuram to monitor the situation and take appropriate action.

The deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal moved further west-northwestwards and lay centred on Saturday morning over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal.

It lay about 690 km southeast of here, 890 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 440 km east-northeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka.

"It is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours (between Saturday and Sunday) and into a severe cyclonic storm in the subsequent 24 hours (between Sunday and Monday morning)," it said.

The system is very likely to move north-northwestwards further and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Ongole and Kakinada during December 17 afternoon.

In view of the system, rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places is very likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 16 and 17.

"Extremely heavy falls at isolated places is also likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on 17 December," it said.

Rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rain over north Tamil Nadu was likely on December 16, the bulletin said.

The wind speed was very likely to increase gradually to gale force with speeds of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph along and off Andhra Pradesh coast from December 17 morning, it said.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake jolted waters near Hualien County in northeast Taiwan at 21:56 Sunday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter was monitored at 24.2 degrees north latitude and 121.72 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 km, the center said in a renewed statement. A 5.6-magnitude quake had previously been reported by the center.

A 5.5-magnitude aftershock was reported at 22:13 in the same region, the center said in another statement.

The center earlier said that a 4.7-magnitude earthquake was monitored at 21:12 in the same area.

Taiwan&#39;s meteorological authority confirmed that a series of earthquakes hit Hualien, with the strongest measured at 5.8.

Typhoon in central Vietnam, several areas flooded

Talim is moving in a west-northwestern direction over the next few days, and by the time it reaches China, it could be a Category 3-strength storm, according to the channel. The Hong Kong Observatory said that it&rsquo;s expected to move across the western portion of the northern Pacific in the general direction of Taiwan and Luzon Strait, the Hong Kong Standard reported. The deaths were all in the south-eastern province of Fujian, where the typhoon made landfall, the civil affairs ministry said in a statement on its website. Total economic damage has been put at 900 million yuan ($134.60 million), with 16,000 hectares (40,000 acres) of crops destroyed and more than 900 houses wrecked, the ministry said. In Taiwan, the storm caused at least three deaths and more than 300 injuries. The storm is expected to worsen already severe flooding in parts of central and eastern China as its remnants slowly make their way inland. Typhoon Nepartak to sweep east China province

Super typhoon Nepartak lashed Taiwan with powerful winds and torrential rain as it made landfall on Friday, injuring dozens and forcing more than 15,000 to evacuate their homes as the island cancelled hundreds of flights and shut offices and schools. 
 
Packing gusts of up to 198 kilometres per hour (123 miles per hour), it landed at Taimali township in eastern Taitung county shortly before 6:00am (2200 GMT, Thursday) and was moving northwest across the island. 
 
One man drowned off a beach in Hualien county on Thursday, according to an official tally, with another 66 people injured so far, mostly by falling objects. 
 
TV footage showed ferocious winds battering Taitung, which recorded the strongest gusts since 1901, according to Taiwan&#39;s central weather bureau.&nbsp; 
 
Fallen shop signs and toppled trees littered the streets, while a cargo train car was blown off the tracks in Taitung, TV reports said. 
 
More than 15,000 people have been moved from their homes which were prone to landslides or flooding and about 3,700 of them were in shelters.&nbsp; 
 
Nearly 4,000 people evacuated were in New Taipei City, which includes Wulai, a popular hot spring area near the capital which was cut off for days after typhoon Soudelor ravaged Taiwan last August. 
 
As many as 331,900 households lost power due to the storm, with close to 255,000 without electricity as of Friday morning. 
 
The government said financial markets, schools and offices would all be closed on Friday. 
 
Most scheduled domestic flights were cancelled while 365 international flights were affected, Taipei&#39;s two main airports said.&nbsp; 
 
The railways will be closed for most of the day. 
 
Nearly 4,400 soldiers have been deployed around the island along with hundreds of vehicles, with another 35,000 troops on standby to help with evacuations and disaster relief. 
 
The weather bureau said the storm had weakened slightly after making landfall but would continue to dump torrential rain across the island for much of Friday. 
 
Mountainous areas may get as much as 900 millimetres (36 inches) of rain in total. 
 
The storm had a radius of 200 kilometres and was moving at a speed of 13 kilometres an hour.
