<p>The United States has warned Turkey over its exports, including chemicals and microchips, to Russia&nbsp;which could boost Moscow's offensive in Ukraine which is nearing completion of one year. A report by the news agency Reuters on Saturday (February 4) said that US Treasury's top sanctions official Brian Nelson visited Turkish government and private sector officials on Thursday and Friday to urge more cooperation in disrupting the flow of such goods.</p>

<p>Nelson met with the Banks Association of Turkey to discuss the implementation of international sanctions on Russia for its war against Ukraine.</p>

<p>According to a statement issued by the US Treasury Department on Friday, he said, "We find ourselves in a particularly difficult moment—nearly one year from the start of Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine; reckoning with economic inequities; facing mounting costs from global corruption, which corrodes societies and capitals around the world; and grappling with evolving threats like those from rogue states and terrorist groups."</p>

<p>Nelson said the marked rise over the past year in non-essential Turkish exports or re-exports to Russia made the Turkish private sector particularly vulnerable to reputational and sanctions risks. "Moscow is seeking to use increasing economic ties, which are not transparent, to exploit other jurisdictions and counter international sanctions," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nelson said that in engaging with Russian-sanctioned entities, Turkish businesses and banks could put themselves at risk of sanctions and a potential loss of access to G7 markets and correspondent relationships.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The top sanctions official further warned that Turkish businesses and banks should take extra precautions to avoid transactions related to potential dual-use technology transfers that could be used by the Russian military-industrial complex, according to Friday's statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Turkey has maintained good ties with both countries. Brian Nelson's visit to Turkey is the latest by senior US officials aiming to ramp up pressure on Ankara to ensure enforcement of American curbs on Moscow. Nelson also urged Turkish bankers to carry out enhanced due diligence on Russian-related transactions and highlighted that Russian oligarchs continue to buy property and dock yachts in Turkey.</p>

<p>Before his visit, Reuters reported that Turkey's largest ground-service provider, Havas, told Russian and Belarusian airlines that it may stop providing parts, fuel and other services to their US-origin aircraft, in line with bans imposed by Western countries. The ministry also urged citizens to stay away from areas where demonstrations might intensify.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first travel advisory warned of "dangerous levels of religious intolerance and hatred in Europe",&nbsp;a report by the news agency AFP said. A separate statement, meanwhile, said, "There have recently been verbal and physical attacks against foreigners and acts of racism committed throughout the United States."</p>

On Friday, several embassies in Ankara, including those of Germany, France, Italy and the United States, issued warnings to&nbsp;their citizens in Turkey that flagged "possible retaliatory attacks by terrorists against places of worship." The citizens were also advised to avoid tourist hotspots in Turkey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ankara's warnings also come after Rasmus Paludan, a Danish-Swedish far-right activist burned the Quran in Stockholm on January 21. Paludan replicated the stunt on Friday in front of a mosque, as well as the Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following the condemnation of the Quran burning incidents, Turkey had cancelled a planned visit by the Swedish defence minister and also summoned the Danish ambassador and accused Denmark of endorsing a “hate crime''.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed Paludan's burning of the Quran and said it was an insult to everyone, especially Muslims. Erdogan also warned Sweden not to expect support for its bid for membership into NATO, a report by the news agency Associated Press said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Finland and Sweden have applied for NATO membership in response to Russia's offensive in Ukraine&nbsp;but their bids to join the intergovernmental military alliance must be approved by all 30 members. <p>He also criticised Swedish authorities for allowing the demonstration to take place outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm.</p>

<p>“So you will let terror organizations run wild and then expect our support for getting into NATO. That’s not happening,” Erdogan said, referring to Sweden and Finland’s accession bids for the military alliance. He said if Sweden won’t show respect to Turkey or Muslims, then “they won’t see any support from us on the NATO issue.”</p>

<p>Türkiye holds Sweden's fortunes in its hands. The Nordic country has been seeking a NATO spot since last year.&nbsp;So far, not much progress has been made on the issue as Ankara has refused to ratify Sweden's application.</p>

<p>Erdogan continues to blast Sweden for providing a safe haven to Kurdish 'terrorists'. The Turkish leader is also cross with the Nordic countries for imposing an arms embargo on Ankara after Türkiye's intervention in the Syrian conflict in 2019.</p>

<p>President Vladimir Putin, in his conversation with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said he was willing to hold talks with Ukraine if the latter is ready to accept territories which have been occupied by Russia, said the Kremlin on Thursday.&nbsp;"Putin again confirmed Russia's openness to serious dialogue on the condition of Kyiv authorities fulfilling the well-known and repeatedly voiced requirements of taking into account the new territorial realities," the Kremlin's statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Large parts of southern and eastern Ukraine have been occupied by Russia. The Kremlin claims to have captured the Zaporizhzhia, Lugansk, Donetsk and Kherson regions, although they don't entirely control them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Russian side emphasised the destructive role of Western states, pumping the Kyiv regime with weapons and military equipment, providing it with operational information and targets," the statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The appeal for a 'unilateral' ceasefire was made by Erdogan after Russia's spiritual leader Patriarch Kirill had earlier on Thursday called for an Orthodox Christmas truce.</p>
