Turning into one of the worst disasters in mankind's history, the monstrous earthquake's toll continues to rise dramatically as rescuers make the frantic search for survivors amid the concrete and debris, with lives fleeting away with every passing second.

The humanitarian workers of Nobel Peace Prize-nominated White Helmets, officially known as Syria Civil Defence, with their resilience and bravery continue saving lives and hopes amid the harsh weather conditions.

Speaking to WION about the tough conditions in which the volunteers are working in Syria, White Helmets' representative Oubadah Alwan says, "Our volunteers on the ground are facing challenges in all aspects of their rescue efforts. The situation is catastrophic, and our organisation is not equipped to handle this scale of the disaster."

<h2>No safe zone, people stranded in freezing cold</h2>

He said people have lost everything they had and now have no shelter or safe zone. The survivors are out in the freezing cold with lack of medical equipment and overwhelmed hospitals, he adds.

"Buildings and homes have been completely destroyed, leaving people with no shelter during the harsh winter. There is no safe zone. People are out in the freezing cold with nowhere to go. Hospitals are beyond capacity and there is a shortage of medical equipment and supplies. Additionally, the search and rescue efforts, carried out in freezing temperatures and amidst aftershocks, have been ongoing for over 24 hours," Alwan told WION.

<h2>Resources spread thin, response limited</h2>

Hinting at the dark days ahead, Alwan laments that resources are spreading thin and those who were already displaced in Syria are now struggling for survival.

"At the moment, our resources are spread thin in every aspect. The response efforts and distribution of aid are stretched thin, making it difficult to meet the needs of the people. The displaced in Syria were already struggling to survive with limited resources, and now the response is even more limited due to the earthquake. The situation on the ground is still catastrophic with ongoing rescue efforts, however, our field workers have rescued approximately 2,200 civilians."

<h2>'Saving a life every second'</h2>

Narrating the on-ground difficulties, Alwan says that the response efforts of White Helmets have been hindered by aftershocks and strong earthquakes. As people scramble for lives and volunteers are able to respond to the initial tragedy, another tragedy strikes, he adds.

"We’ve been able to rescue many people, but there has been a large death toll till now and still people are trapped under the rubble. Volunteers are working as hard as they can to save people, but they are at full capacity. The death toll is expected to dramatically rise as hundreds remain trapped under rubble. Time is running out. Every second could mean saving a life," Alwan says.

India has sent four C-17 aircraft carrying over 108 tonnes of relief material, equipment, and rescue personnel to Turkey. Apart from that, 100 personnel and self-contained search and rescue units from the National Disaster Response Force equipped with specialised tools for collapsed structure search and rescue operations have also been dispatched.

India has also sent a 30-bed medical facility to Turkiye, with 99 personnel and medical equipment, including X-ray machines, ventilators, and ambulances.

Speaking to WION on Tuesday, Türkiye Ambassador to India Firat Sunel said, "PM Narendra Modi gave immediate instructions to build a crisis centre and all relevant Indian authorities had a meeting. I was also there for cooperation, and this is an example of good friendship, and we really appreciate it so much."

Besides Turkey, India has sent over six (6) tonnes of relief material to Syria, including emergency use medicines and essential medical items. The relief supplies, transported on a C130J aircraft, also include general and protective gear and equipment such as ECG machines and monitors.

The Syrian Ambassador also spoke to WION and appreciated the Indian support. "The fast, good, generous response by the Government of India is really unique.”&nbsp;

India’s junior foreign minister V Muraleedharan had visited the embassies of both countries in Delhi and extended condolences on behalf of the Indian government.

India's quick response to the crisis highlights its commitment to supporting disaster-stricken communities and providing crucial aid to those in need.

Turkey and Syria were jolted by two major earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5. Several aftershocks hampered the rescue work.&nbsp;

The epicentre of Monday's earthquake was at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres near the Turkish city of Gaziantep. The city is home to around two million people.&nbsp;

Later experts revealed that the earthquake was caused by the Arabian tectonic plate moving northward. Turkey is prone to earthquakes as it sits above major faultlines, bordering the Anatolian Plate, Arabian Plate and Eurasian Plate.&nbsp;

According to the meteorologists, about a 225 km stretch of the fault between the Anatolian Plate and the Arabian Plate has been damaged.&nbsp;

Dr Carlo Doglioni, who is an Italian seismologist told the news site Italy 24, that after the earthquake, Turkey could even have slipped by up to "five to six metres compared to Syria".&nbsp;

As quoted by media reports, Dr Doglioni, who is a president of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said that "what we call the Arabian plate moved about three meters along the northeast-southwest direction in relation to the Anatolian plate; we are talking about a structure in the border area between this world, that of the Arabian plate and that of the Anatolian plate".&nbsp;

Although, he did mention that more information is needed to produce a concrete result the analysis is based on preliminary data.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a Daily Mail report quoted Dr Bob Holdsworth, a professor of structural geology at Durham University, as saying that the plate shift was "perfectly reasonable" considering the magnitude of the earthquake.&nbsp;

"There is a fairly predictable, widely documented relationship between the magnitude of an earthquake and the typical offset that occurs," Dr Holdsworth told Daily Mail.&nbsp;

"As a rule of thumb, a magnitude 6.5 to 6.9 event is associated with an offset of around one metre – whilst the largest known earthquakes can involve offsets of 10 to 15 metres," he added.&nbsp;

"The faults that slipped yesterday in Turkey are strike-slip faults that involve mainly horizontal displacements, and so the overall offsets in the region of 3 to 6 metres proposed here are perfectly reasonable," he further said.&nbsp;

The blaze led to the shutdown of all operations at the terminal until further notice and forced freight liners to divert vessels to other ports.

The defence ministry said later on Tuesday the fire was put out thanks to efforts by military helicopters and planes after Monday's efforts to douse the flames from offshore failed.

Leading global container shipping group AP Moller Maersk said there had been significant damage to logistics and transport infrastructure around the earthquake epicentre, including at the Port of Iskenderun.

It said it was looking to re-route ships as needed, given the "severe structural damage, leading to a complete stop of all operations until further notice".

"We will need to perform a change of destination for all bookings bound for the port or already on the water. We are currently planning to divert containers to nearby hubs within operational feasibility or hold at transhipment ports - including Port of Mersin (in Turkey) and Port Said (in Egypt)."

Maersk added in an updated advisory on Tuesday that a fire broke out among containers at the terminal on Monday evening after the earthquake struck and the company was working to assess the potential loss of cargo.

"It's not yet known how long recovery efforts will take and when the port can undergo a full inspection of the damage."

A source from a container broker said the fire most likely originated in a container filled with flammable industrial oil, judging by the flames and smoke.

India readied national disaster response force teams comprising personnel with dog squads and equipment. Indian doctors and paramedics with medicines are assisting the work. Germany - home to about three million people of Turkish origin - has promised to mobilise all possible assistance. China is sending $5.9 million in emergency aid to turkey, including rescue and medical teams. The PM of Greece pledged to make 'every force available' to aid Turkiye. Qatar is sending 120 rescue workers to Turkiye, alongside a field hospital, relief aid, tents and winter supplies. The UAE also intends to set up a field hospital in Turkiye. A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake has wrought widespread destruction in Turkey&nbsp;and Syria. The latest counts have put the death toll at around 3,700 people. However, it is expected that this figure may reach 10,000, as many people are still trapped under the rubble.

The earthquake has brought down massive multi-storey buildings and whole apartment blocks.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, this is the worst tremor to hit Turkey&nbsp;this century. In war-hit Syria, it has only added to the devastation already being borne by millions of Syrians who for 11 years have been plagued by war.

The death toll which is continuously moving upwards is already the highest toll from any earthquake Turkey&nbsp;has endured since 1999. Back then, a tremor of seven-plus magnitude had killed more than 17,000 people.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, as per Reuters, called this a "historic disaster" and the worst tremor to hit the country since 1939. As per the leader who is currently preparing for a tough election in May, authorities are doing everything they could do.

In a statement, its government said that on PM Narendra Modi's instructions, the National Disaster Rescue Force's search and rescue teams paired with medical teams are to be dispatched promptly. Reportedly, the United Nations is also present on the ground to assess the needs and provide assistance.

However, it is expected that this figure may reach 10,000, as many people are still trapped under the rubble. Turkiye declares week-long national mourning after deadly earthquake killed thousands

Turkey's Ambassador to India Firat Sunel has thanked New Delhi for standing by Turkey in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in his country. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the envoy said Prime Minister Narendra Modi acted promptly and dispatched the relief teams. He also thanked India for being a friend in the&nbsp;trying times.&nbsp;

Sidhant Sibal: What is the current situation in your country?

Firat Sunel: I just want to make my first comment, this is not just one earthquake there were two huge earthquakes, magnitude 7 and 7.6 and followed by almost 300 aftershocks. So, the damage is very big, because almost 14 million people are impacted in 10 cities. The devastation is huge, let me tell some actual numbers.

The death toll is almost 3000, more than 15000 injured and 4700 buildings collapsed in the region. So some airports are already closed in the region but other airports in neighbouring the region are open and we use it for humanitarian help.

Sidhant Sibal: Your government must be overwhelmed, if you can talk about the measures taken by your government.&nbsp;

Firat Sunel: Yes, thinking of the extent of the devastation, the size of the region, it is not an easy task. Two huge earthquakes in the same day. There are 15000 search and rescue teams including our health teams. More than 5000 military personnel are there, so are some sanitary facility toilets, bathrooms, field hospitals, crisis management team.

They have been working without any interruption since the first earthquake. We also have some foreign search and rescue teams. There are about 2700, with rescue dogs, out 65 countries in which India is also included.

Firat Sunel: We appreciate it. Yesterday I shared it on my Twitter account as well, we have common words in Hindi and Turkish. Dost means friend. In Turkish, there is a proverb, 'dost-dost kara günde belli olur', which means friend in need is a friend indeed. So the friends help each other when they are in need.&nbsp;You may recall, you were the first person to report about Turkey's medical aid in May 2021. During covid time Turkey sent two airplanes loaded with 45 tonnes of medical aid.

Now devastation is&nbsp;huge in Turkey&nbsp;and PM Narendra Modi gave immediate instructions to build a crisis centre and all relevant Indian authorities had a meeting yesterday. I was also there for cooperation, and this is an example of good friendship, and we really appreciate it so much.

India decided to send two planes, a search, and a rescue team. One of them left yesterday in the night-time and has arrived in the country two hours ago with 23 tonnes of equipment&nbsp;and more than 50 search rescue personnel. They are in the region and have&nbsp;started their activities.

In one hour, a second plane is also going to Turkey, this is also a big military aircraft. This is also a huge help for Turkey. We appreciate it very much. We appreciate not&nbsp;only the material help, but also for standing by Turkey.&nbsp;There are lot of messages from PM Modi to EAM Jaishankar.&nbsp;

Sidhant Sibal: It hasn't been very very easy for you as well, you had a sleepless night, coordinating here

Firat Sunel: Yes, you had the right expression, we had a sleepless night. We had to coordinate everything&nbsp;with relevant authorities in India and also in Turkey. Not only me, the whole embassy team as well as the Indian embassy in Turkey spent a sleepless night. They also chad to coordinate. I think we will have more sleepless nights to coordinate this.

“In the nearest hours, rescuers from the Russian emergency ministry will take off for Syria,” the Kremlin said. “Bashar al-Assad gratefully accepted this offer,” the statement added. Moreover, the Turkish president thanked Putin for "such a prompt and sincere reaction and said that he was giving instructions to the competent authorities of the country to accept the help of Russian rescuers.”

Poland

Poland will send rescue group HUSAR, consisting of 76 firefighters and eight rescue dogs, Interior and Administration Minister Mariusz Kamiński said.

Qatar

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar, called Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkiye, to offer his sympathies. The emir reportedly offered Qatar's solidarity for the "sisterly" nation "in alleviating the significant humanitarian implications caused by the earthquake," according to state news agency QNA.

Spain

Officials from the defence ministry and other agencies are working together to send Spanish urban rescue teams right away to Turkiye, according to the interior ministry of Spain.

United States

The agency added that 5,400&nbsp;people suffered injuries. Meanwhile, in Syria, the death toll increased to 592 with more than 1,000 injured, stated the Syrian state media.&nbsp;

Vice President Fuat Otkay said that around 900 buildings collapsed in the Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras provinces of Turkiye.

He added that a hospital also turned into rubbles in the Mediterranean coastal city of Iskanderoun, however, no casualties were known so far.

“Unfortunately, at the same time, we are also struggling with extremely severe weather conditions,” Oktay added. He further stated that they have deployed around 2,800 search and rescue teams in the disaster-stricken areas.

As per reports, the region was struck by the earthquake at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) and a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles), stated the US agency said. The earthquake was also felt by people in Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus, as residents rushed to the snowy streets.

As per a Reuters witness, the tremor lasted for a minute and even shattered the windows. After 15 minutes, the region suffered a 6.7-magnitude aftershock.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of Turkiye have placed the quake's magnitude at 7.4 near Kahramanmaras.

According to Syrian state media, many buildings also fell in the province of Aleppo, while the Hama civil service reported the collapse of several buildings.

"Paintings fell off the walls in the house. I woke up terrified. Now we’re all dressed and standing at the door,” said Samer, a resident of Syria's capital Damascus.

The witnesses reported that people were seen running on foot in the streets of Damascus as well as the Lebanese cities of Tripoli and Beirut.

Turkish Red Cross stated that resources are being mobilised for the region and people have been appealed to evacuate damaged houses.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted, “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the areas hit by the quake. "We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage," he added.

At least six aftershocks were felt by people as Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu appealed them to avoid entering the damaged buildings because of the risks.

“Our priority is to bring out people trapped under ruined buildings and to transfer them to hospitals,” he stated.&nbsp;
