As per the eyewitness, the dog is being taken care of by the neighbours of the owner as the owner remains hospitalised in Mersin, which is around 200km west of Iskenderun.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the powerful earthquake “one of the greatest disasters our nation has faced in its history”, as reported by AP.

While touring around Adiyaman province on Friday, he said that search-and-rescue efforts would consistently continue till no one is trapped in the debris.

Syrian President Bashar Assad, meanwhile, slammed the Western countries for politicising the humanitarian crisis of the country, as he said, “The West has no humanitarianism, therefore politicising the situation in Syria is something they would naturally do.”

An Indian national who was missing since the earthquakes hit Turkey, on February 6, was found dead on Saturday (February 11) under the rubble of a hotel he was staying in. The Indian embassy in Turkey confirmed that the body of the victim, Vijay Kumar Gaud was found in the debris of a hotel in Malatya where he was on a business trip.&nbsp; 
 
According to reports citing officials, the victim’s face was injured beyond recognition and the body was identified by his family by the tattoo of the word “Om” on his hand. “We inform with sorrow that the mortal remains of Shri Vijay Kumar, an Indian national missing in Turkiye since February 6 earthquake, have been found and identified among the debris of a hotel in Malatya, where he was on a business trip,” said the Indian embassy in Turkey, in a tweet.&nbsp;

Who was Vijay Kumar?

Vijay Kumar was a 35-year-old from the Pauri district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand and was reportedly a technician for a Bengaluru-based gas-plant company, Oxyplants India Pvt. Ltd. He was in Turkey on an assignment. As per media reports, Gaud was found under the rubble of the four-star Avsar Hotel in Malatya where he was staying since January 25 for a project that was supposed to end by mid-February.&nbsp;

The victim’s elder brother Arun Kumar Gaud&nbsp;that his wife, Pinky Gaur, and six-year-old son had last talked to him on the phone on February 5 and that he was to return to India on February 20.&nbsp;"His phone rings but no one responds," said his elder brother to&nbsp;PTI, after his brother went missing.

Kumar was sent to Turkey for installing and commissioning an acetylene gas plant in Malatya, as per media reports, and secured his visa by mid-January.&nbsp;According to family sources quoting Indian embassy officials, Gaud’s mortal remains will first be flown to Istanbul and then taken to Delhi, and it may take some three days for his body to reach Uttarakhand, reported PTI.&nbsp;

A land border crossing between Turkey and Armenia was opened for the first time in 35 years on Saturday with Yerevan agreeing to aid Ankara's quake-related rescue and rehabilitation mission by opening the Alican border crossing. Five trucks with aid including food and water arrived in Turkey from the Alican border crossing, tweeted Serdar Kilic, Turkey's special envoy for dialogue with Armenia.

The assistance comes after a series of earthquakes rocked Turkey and Syria this week, killing nearly 25,000 people in both countries.

According to state news agency Anadolu, this was the first time the crossing had opened since 1988. In 1988, Turkey sent aid to Armenia after the country was hit by a similarly deadly earthquake that killed between 25,000 to 30,000.

Kilic also thanked Armenia and the Armenian national assembly's vice president Ruben Rubinyan. The aid also included medicine, he said.

"Happy to have been able to assist," Rubinyan said on Twitter.

The AFP reported that its journalists counted nearly 200 dead bodies in the parking lot of the main hospital in Antakya, a large city in Turkey's Hatay province. People were reportedly seen going from corpse to corpse looking for the people they knew. Seven bodies were seen lying at the foot of a container overflowing with waste. The walls of Antakya's main hospital has huge cracks. The interior of the hospital building is reported to be badly damaged, following which the hospital is unable to attend to the patients, dead or alive. Although still standing, authorities are reported to have taken the decision to evacuate it.

At least 3,356 people died in Hatay, more than a quarter of the dead in Turkey so far reported.

Patients are treated in red and white tents and are classified into three colours&nbsp;according to the severity of their injuries. A building in Malatya city, which was finished in 2022, collapsed in Monday's quake. According to an advertisement on social media, this building was completed in compliance with the latest earthquake regulations. The advertisement also said that all materials used were of first-class quality. Another apartment block in the port city of Iskenderun was largely destroyed due to the quake. It quoted David Alexander, Professor of Emergency Planning and Management at University College London, as saying that the maximum intensity for this earthquake was quite high but not necessarily enough to bring down well-constructed quake-resistant buildings down. "In most places, the level of shaking was less than the maximum, so we can conclude out of the thousands of buildings that collapsed, almost all of them don't stand up to any reasonably expected earthquake construction code," Alexander added. Critics warn on construction amnesties provided by govt The Turkish government has provided periodic construction amnesties — effectively legal exemptions for payment of a fee, for those structures that are built without the required safety certificates. However, critics warned that such amnesties risk catastrophe in the event of a major earthquake, the BBC report added. In Southern Turkey, 75,000 buildings across the affected quake zone were given construction amnesties, said the Istanbul head of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects' Chamber of City Planners. And just a few days before the latest quakes, local media reported that a new draft law is awaiting parliamentary approval which would grant further amnesty for recent construction work. The anger at govt doesn't end here Apart from the anger about the standards of buildings, Turkish citizens have also severely censured the government over its response to the latest earthquakes. A report by the news agency AFP on Thursday (February 9) said that the police detained 18 people since Monday over "provocative" social media posts that criticised how the government had been dealing with the disaster. On social media, several people complained about lack of search and rescue efforts in their provinces. Twitter was blocked on Turkish mobile providers on Wednesday due to mounting online criticism. However, the site still worked using VPN services that disguise a user's location. The services were restored by early Thursday. As per reports, it started when Turkish people thronged on social media and criticised Erdogan's government in its failure to efficiently respond in the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake that hit the Middle East nation on Monday.

Turkish social media was flooded with remarks from users who were dissatisfied with the state of search and rescue operations in their areas after the devastating earthquake. The Twitter outage occurred as Erdogan visited two of the most severely affected areas in Turkey.

Twitter Chief Executive Elon Musk later said in a tweet that the Turkish government had informed the company&nbsp;that full access to the social media platform in the country will be re-enabled "shortly".

"Twitter has been informed by the Turkish government that access will be re-enabled shortly," Musk tweeted, without providing further details on timing.

The Turkish police has been stamping its authority on social media dissenters. Over a dozen have been detained so far for criticising President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government and its post-quake relief measures.&nbsp;

The report of Twitter inaccessibility was confirmed by AFP news agency as well where the ground reporters could not get their hands on the microblogging site on major Turkish mobile providers on Wednesday. However, the agency reported that Twitter was still accessible using virtual private network (VPN) services, that hides a user's physical location.&nbsp;

The combined total, with the 2,470 deaths recorded officially in Syria, has reached 9,578.&nbsp;The harsh weather conditions are severely endangering people and making rescue operations more difficult.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake, one of the biggest to impact the area in more than 100 years, occurred 24.1 kilometres (14.9 miles) under the surface in Turkey's Gaziantep province, 23 kilometres (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi.

In regions under government control, at least 812 people have died, according to Syrian official media. The number of fatalities in Syria now stands at least at 1,832.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said that Turkey's current death toll was 5,434. Minister Koca claimed that there have been at least 31,777 injuries in Turkey. In both nations, there have been at least 35,626 injuries.
