Protests started on Friday (October 14) after funeral of Malek Selimi (24) who died &nbsp;after a police chase in August left him with a severe neck injury.

Tunisia's Interior Ministry has not commented on Selimi's death.

Tunisia has been battling an intense political crisis since President Kais Saied seized power and dissolved parliament in 2021.

Earlier on Saturday, two rival opposition groups staged one of the biggest days of protest so far against the president, denouncing his moves to consolidate political power as public anger grows over fuel and food shortages.

Saied, who moved to rule by decree after shutting down parliament last year and expanding his powers with a new constitution passed in a July referendum, has said the measures were needed to save Tunisia from years of crisis.

In a speech made on Saturday, Kais Saied demanded departure of "all who want to undermine independence". This was an apparent allusion to his political rivals.

Saied's opponents say his actions have undermined the democracy secured through a 2011 revolution that ousted autocratic leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and triggered the Arab spring.

Kishida, 65, had to depart for a visit to Tunisia but the virus has forced him to recuperate at his official residence, according to a statement released by the Cabinet Secretariat. It is pertinent to note that Kishida is double vaxxed and had a booster shot, earlier this month.&nbsp;

According to local media reports, Kishida had worked till August 15, performing his official duties before taking a short holiday with his family. He was supposed to return to work on Monday but will now be forced to take a break or work remotely.&nbsp;

The National Salvation Front, an opposition coalition, said the draft constitution would enshrine a "coup d'etat" and that 75% of Tunisians have refused to approve it.

Saied, a 64-year-old law professor, dissolved the parliament and seized control of the judiciary and the electoral commission on 25th July last year.

His opponents say that the move is aimed at installing an autocracy a decade after the fall of dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. However, supporters of Saied argue that the steps were necessary after years of corruption and political turmoil.

Saied has also threatened his enemies in recent months, issuing video diatribes against unnamed foes he describes as "germs", "snakes", and "traitors".

On Monday, he promised that everyone who has committed crimes against the country would be held accountable for their actions.

Hassen Zargouni, head of the Sigma Conseil group that conducted the exit poll, said that of the 7,500 voters questioned, 92-93 % were in the "Yes" camp.

He also defended the turnout by saying it was pretty good, given that about two million people have been added to electoral rolls since the 2019 legislative elections.

The head of Tunisia's powerful UGTT trade union confederation on Thursday rejected conditions set by the International Monetary Fund for a new loan to bail out the country's struggling economy.

"We reject the conditions set by the IMF, given Tunisians' low salaries, lack of means, rising poverty and unemployment," Noureddine Taboubi told reporters.

The global lender has called for "ambitious reforms" to tackle the heavily indebted country's public finances and reform its state-owned companies.

The IMF's regional chief Jihad Azour said on Wednesday that the fund was set to begin formal talks on a new financial aid package "in the coming weeks", saying the economic fallout from the Ukraine war made it ever more pressing.

Azour had reiterated an IMF call for "swift implementation of ambitious reforms", saying Tunisia "needs to urgently tackle its fiscal imbalances" including by replacing generalised subsidies with transfers targeting the poor.

But on Thursday Taboubi, whose union members last week staged a crippling public sector strike, said the UGTT rejected "the painful options they're talking about".

"We support reforms, but we don't share the vision of reforms supported by this government," he said.

He also indirectly criticised President Kais Saied, who in July last year sacked the previous administration and suspended parliament in moves opponents have called a coup against the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring uprisings.

The UGTT, a co-laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts in a previous national dialogue following Tunisia's 2011 revolution, initially backed Saied's moves but has become increasingly critical as Saied extended his power grab.

On Thursday, Taboubi said,&nbsp;"When there is a government produced by institutions and elections, it will have the legitimacy to start negotiations over reforms."

In a statement, the environment ministry said that the merchant ship, Xelo, requested entry into Tunisian waters on Friday evening due to bad weather. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Pioneers reviving the eco-lodge in Tunisia

The Interior ministry of Tunisia said in an official statement on Wednesday that they have dismantled a terrorist cell linked to ISIS. According to the statement, the units from the Anti-Terrorism department at Tunisia’s National Guard broke up militants who were linked to an extremist group that had earlier pledged allegiance to ISIS in the southern Tunisian city of Tataouine.<o:p></o:p>

The statement from the interior ministry also stated that the Tunisian authorities believed that the cell was planning attacks with explosives and was trying to recruit young people.

“The cell included six members and is active in the Tataouine region led by a Takfiri (extremist) fighter. Its fighters had pledged allegiance to the leader of the so-called ISIS terrorist group. They deliberately attracted a group of young men to adopt the Takfiri ideology and also planned to manufacture explosive materials,” the statement read.<o:p></o:p>

In the last year, there have been a number of reports regarding militants close to ISIS planning terror attacks in Tunisia. According to a recent report by Reuters, it is estimated that more than 3,000 Tunisians have joined the war in Syria and Iraq fighting on the side of the Islamic State.

The Tunisian army has been battling armed extremist groups since 2012 in the country’s central mountains and according to the reports, they include fighters from Jund al-Khalifa, or “Soldiers of the Caliphate”, linked to the ISIS group and jihadists from Okba Ibn Nafaa.<o:p></o:p>

In 2015, assailants killed 15 soldiers on Mount Chaambi and in February this year, ISIS claimed responsibility for the death of four soldiers in the three blasts near Mount Mghila.<o:p></o:p>
