Criminal trial over White Island volcanic eruption starts in New Zealand

A Paris court on Wednesday found a former Rwandan military policeman guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1994 slaughter in his home country and sentenced him to life in prison.

The court said it had found Philippe Hategekimana, 66, guilty of nearly all the charges against him.

He fled to France after the genocide, obtaining refugee status and then French nationality under the name Philippe Manier.

The trial of Hategekimana, which began last month, was the fifth such trial in France of an alleged participant in the massacres.

More than 800,000 people were killed between April and July 1994 according to UN figures, most of them from the Tutsi minority.
Plaintiffs accused Hategekimana of "using the powers and military force conferred to him through his rank in order to... take part in the genocide."

He denied the charges.

France, one of the top destinations for fugitives from the massacres, has tried and convicted a former spy chief, two ex-mayors, a former hotel chauffeur and an ex-top official in similar trials since 2014.

But it has generally refused requests to extradite suspects to Rwanda, prompting President Paul Kagame to accuse Paris of denying Rwanda jurisdiction.

Rwandan ex-policeman gets life over genocide: Paris court

Vitamin D supplements have the potential to decrease the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks, in older individuals, according to a recent study, media reports said. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, and as the population ages and chronic diseases become more prevalent, the number of cardiovascular events is expected to rise.

Previous observational studies have consistently demonstrated a connection between vitamin D levels and CVD risk. However, previous randomised controlled trials failed to find evidence that supplements could prevent cardiovascular events, potentially due to variations in trial design.

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the body, essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. In the UK, government advice suggests that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter seasons.

A recent randomised controlled trial involving over 21,000 individuals aged 60 and above suggests that vitamin D supplements may indeed reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events.

The study, published in The BMJ, emphasised that the absolute risk difference was small but highlighted its significance as the largest trial of its kind to date.

“These findings indicate that vitamin D supplementation might reduce the incidence of major cardiovascular events,” the Australian authors said, as per a Guardian report.

More trials were needed, but the authors said it suggested previous thinking that vitamin D supplements do not alter CVD risk was “premature”.

The researchers stressed the need for further evaluation based on these findings. However, they stated that vitamin D supplementation might decrease the incidence of major cardiovascular events, challenging the previously held belief that vitamin D supplements do not affect CVD risk.

What was the trial?

The trial, conducted by the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Queensland as part of its population health programme, spanned from 2014 to 2020 and involved 21,315 Australians aged 60 to 84.

The participants were randomly assigned to receive either a vitamin D supplement or a placebo orally at the beginning of each month for up to five years.

During the trial, 1,336 individuals experienced a major cardiovascular event, with 6.6 per cent in the placebo group and six per cent in the vitamin D group.

The vitamin D group exhibited a nine per cent lower rate of major cardiovascular events compared to the placebo group, corresponding to 5.8 fewer events per 1,000 participants. The rate of heart attacks was 19 per cent lower in the vitamin D group, while no difference in stroke risk was observed between the two groups.

The researchers estimated that 172 individuals would need to take monthly vitamin D supplements to prevent one major cardiovascular event. Although the trial had its limitations, the researchers highlighted its large scale, high retention, and adherence rates, as well as comprehensive data on cardiovascular events and mortality outcomes.

Elon Musk is on trial this week for potential fraud after tweeting in 2018 that he was poised to take Tesla private. In a federal courtroom in San Francisco, where Tesla CEO Musk was scheduled to be one of those summoned to testify, the selection of jurors who would evaluate the evidence began. The episode started in August 2018 when Musk tweeted that he had the funds to take Tesla private, sparking a wild rise in the price of the company's stock.

Stockholders sued Musk for allegedly costing them billions of dollars with the tweet that said finance was "secured" to buy out the company's shareholders.

"The plaintiff alleges that these tweets were materially false and artificially affected the price of Tesla stock and other securities after they were made," US District Court Judge Edward Chen said while summarizing the case for potential jurors.

The Tesla tycoon's attorneys, according to Chen, will contend that any attempts to prove that Musk's tweet was "materially" false or that shareholders experienced damage as a result would fail at trial.

Last week, Chen rejected Musk's request to move the proceedings to Texas, the southern state where Musk relocated Tesla's headquarters.

The multibillionaire, who purchased Twitter in late October and has been under harsh fire for his actions since assuming control of the social media company, was denied a fair trial, according to the defence attorneys, in San Francisco.

Musk radically changed the site's content moderation procedures after assuming control of Twitter, firing more than half of the 7,500 workers.

More than six years after the 2016 Brussels bombings, presiding judge Laurence Massart will formally confirm on Monday all parties to the case, including the defendants and attorneys for the over 1,000 victims of the assaults that the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for. She will next address the jury, which was chosen last week after a 14-hour procedure involving 1,000 Belgians. The French trial for the Paris attacks in November 2015 and the Brussels bombings trial are clearly related. Six of the Brussels defendants were given prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life in France in June, but the Belgian trial will be unique since a jury, not judges, will decide the case.

On March 22, 2016, three bombs were detonated in the city's subway system, killing 15 men and 17 women, many of whom were citizens of countries other than Belgium, including the United States, China, France, Germany, India, Peru, and Poland. Brussels is also the location of the NATO and EU institutions.

All 10 individuals are accused of taking part in terrorist organisation operations, and nine men face life sentences for several killings and attempted murders committed in a terrorist-related context.

Two of them are Osama Krayem, a Swedish citizen suspected of plotting to be a second bomber on the Brussels metro, and Mohamed Abrini, who officials claim travelled to the airport with two suicide bombers but left before setting off his explosives-filled suitcase. Salah Abdeslam, the primary suspect in the Paris trial, is also charged, along with other people who the prosecution alleges harboured or assisted specific perpetrators. One of the 10 people who were allegedly slain in Syria will face an absentee trial.

The defendants have not formally affirmed their innocence or guilt in accordance with Belgian legal practise.

Prior to the beginning of the hearings for the approximately 370 experts and witnesses, prosecutors are anticipated to begin reading from the 486-page indictment on Tuesday.

It is anticipated that the trial in the former NATO headquarters would last seven months and cost at least 35 million euros ($36.9 million).

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Harvey Weinstein is facing trial in the city where he was once a towering presence at the Oscars, five years after the #MeToo movement erupted in response to women's claims about sexual assault and harassment by him.

The 70-year-old former movie magnate is already serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault in New York, but he is also accused of a number of other crimes, some of which, according to the prosecution, took place during an important Oscar week in Los Angeles. Monday marks the start of jury selection for an eight-week trial.

Five women, who will testify as Jane Does in court, filed complaints with charges of four counts of rape and seven other counts of sexual assault by Weinstein. He entered a not-guilty plea.

In order to demonstrate jurors that Weinstein had a history of committing such crimes, four more women will be permitted to testify about sexual assaults that occurred but did not result in charges.

Beginning in the 1990s, Weinstein pioneered the use of extensive and forceful marketing to promote Academy Award nominations through the business Miramax, which he co-founded with his brother. He achieved unheard-of success, helping movies like "The Artist" and "Shakespeare in Love" win best picture awards and ranking among the most men ever acknowledged in Oscar victory speeches.

Even though it is a follow-up case and Weinstein is already serving a lengthy sentence, the Los Angeles trial is expected to be much less dramatic than the New York procedures.

The downtown LA courthouse where the trial is being held has little foot traffic and no grand entrance. As he did in Manhattan, Weinstein won't be seen by any media horde or demonstrators outside since he will be led directly from jail into the courthouse after changing from his prison garb into a suit and into a narrow passageway where no cameras are allowed that could film him.

The small courthouse will only admit twelve reporters each day, compared to several dozen in New York. Two sketch artists will be permitted.

There is some good news for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s as an experimental drug has shown significant success in slowing down cognitive and functional decline by almost 27 per cent, according to the makers of the medicine. Lecanemab, developed by Japanese drug maker Eisai and American company Biogen, showed huge potential in clinical trials and the companies believe that it can get approval by 2023.

The study was conducted with 1800 patients suffering from various stages of Alzheimer’s. Eisai said that the data of the trial results will be presented at an Alzheimer’s conference in San Francisco in November.

There were some side effects of the drug like brain swelling and bleeding, but Eisai said they were well within their expected limits, according to a report in Washington Post.

Previously, the two companies tried to launch a similar drug called Aduhelm. While it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the lack of Medicare cover resulted in its discontinuation.

While Lecanemab has the same composition as Aduhelm, the latter has “reduced the pace of cognitive decline in people with early disease by 27% over 18 months”, the companies claimed.

Kobe Bryant's widow was awarded USD 16 million as part of a USD 31 million jury verdict Wednesday against Low Angeles County for deputies and firefighters sharing grisly photos of the NBA star, his 13-year-old daughter and other victims killed in a 2020 helicopter crash. The nine jurors unanimously agreed with Vanessa Bryant and her attorneys that the photos invaded her privacy and caused emotional distress. She cried quietly as it was read.

The jury deliberated 4 1/2 hours before reaching the verdict on Kobe Bryant Day, which is celebrated in LA on August 24 because it represents his jersey numbers 8 and 24 and is the day after his birthday. Tuesday would have been Bryant's 44th birthday. An attorney for the county declined comment on the verdict outside the courtroom.

The pictures were shared mostly between employees of the LA County sheriff's and fire departments including by some who were playing video games and attending an awards banquet. They were also seen by some of their spouses and in one case by a bartender at a bar where a deputy was drinking.
Vanessa Bryant tearfully testified during the 11-day trial that news of the photos compounded her still-raw grief a month after losing her husband and daughter, and that she still has panic attacks at the thought that they might still be out there. "I live in fear every day of being on social media and these popping up," she testified. "I live in fear of my daughters being on social media and these popping up."

Her co-plaintiff Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter were also among the nine people killed in the crash, was awarded USD 15 million. "We're grateful for a jury and a judge who gave us a fair trial," said Chester's lawyer Jerry Jackson.

Vanessa Bryant and her attorney declined comment outside court Wednesday. Her face was still streaked with tears as she walked past TV cameras and dozens of reporters and climbed into an SUV.
Vanessa Bryant's lawyer Luis Li told jurors that the close-up photos had no official or investigative purpose, and were mere "visual gossip" shared out of a gruesome curiosity.

County attorney J. Mira Hashmall argued during the trial that the photos were a necessary tool for assessing the situation. She acknowledged that they should not have been shared with everyone who saw them. But she emphasized that the photos had never appeared publicly, and had never even been seen by the plaintiffs. She said that meant that Sheriff Alex Villanueva and other officials had taken decisive and effective action when they ordered those who had the photos to delete them.

A Phnom Penh court convicted around 60 opposition figures including Theary Seng, an outspoken US-Cambodian activist, who came dressed as the Statue of Liberty at the hearing, in a mass trial Tuesday as long-serving leader Hun Sen cracks down on dissent ahead of national elections next year.

Theary Seng is among scores caught up in a push to detain and arrest former members of the now-dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), human rights defenders, and any dissenting voices.

"I am ready for a guilty verdict because this regime will not let me go free," Seng said before her conviction.

"It will be an unfair and unjust verdict because I am innocent, the others charged with me are innocent," the 51-year-old added.

The defendants faced charges ranging from treason to incitement and conspiracy over opposition leader Sam Rainsy's failed bid to return to Cambodia in 2019, a move characterised by the government as an aborted bid to overthrow Hun Sen.

While some were senior figures in the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) directly involved in organising the return, many were prosecuted simply for posting support on social media.

Following Seng’s detention, there was a brief scuffle outside the court between police and relatives of those convicted, as well as her supporters.

"We are deeply troubled by today's unjust verdicts," a spokesman for the US embassy in Phnom Penh said, calling for her and others convicted to be released.

The embassy urged Cambodian authorities to "stop politically motivated trials" against political activists, journalists, and human rights campaigners.

"Freedom of expression and association, and tolerance of dissenting views, are vital components of democracy," US ambassador Patrick Murphy added in a tweet.

Sam Rainsy, who has lived in France since 2015 to avoid jail for convictions he says are politically motivated, had another eight years added to his existing sentence.

He said, "The political repression against the opposition gets more and more violent, and I would say also more and more blind. It targets all spheres of society, and actually targets freedom of expression, which is not tolerated under part of the authorities."

Trial of an alleged Islamic State terrorist who was member of a group that beheaded US hostages in Iraq and Syria began on Tuesday in the US. The group was known as "The Beatles" for their British accent.

El Shafee Elsheikh, 33, will stand trial in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, on charges including lethal hostage-taking and conspiracy to commit murder.

Elsheikh was one of four ISIS militants belonging to the four-member Islamic State cell. The cell garnered international attention after releasing videos of the murders of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig, among other victims.

Two of the cell's four members, Elsheikh and Alexanda Kotey, were held in Iraq by the US military before being flown to the United States to face trial.

Mohammed Emwazi, a British citizen who oversaw the executions, died in a drone strike in 2015. Aine Lesley Davis, the fourth member of the group, was convicted in Turkey on terrorism charges and jailed.

Kotey pleaded guilty in September 2021 to the murders of Foley, Sotloff, Mueller and Kassig. He will be sentenced next month.

Kotey was a citizen of the United Kingdom, but the British government withdrew his citizenship.

The charges against Elsheikh, a UK citizen, carry a potential death sentence, but US prosecutors have advised British officials that they will not seek the death penalty against Elsheikh or Kotey.

US District Judge TS Ellis will oversee the trial, and is expected to spend Tuesday questioning potential jurors to ensure a fair trial.

Elsheikh's lawyers have said the killings were planned and carried out by Emwazi at the behest of Islamic State leadership.

The jury seems to have deadlocked on the three remaining charges. The split verdicts are "a mixed bag for the prosecution, but it's a loss for Elizabeth Holmes because she is going away to prison for at least a few years," said David Ring, a lawyer following the Holmes case closely.

In the trial, the federal prosecutors provided testimony and evidence to show Holmes was a charlatan, who was obsessed with fame and fortune.

In an emotional testimony, the police officer, who shot and killed Daunte Wright, testified at manslaughter trial in the United States on Friday.

The suburban Minneapolis cop said that she didn't plan to use deadly force that day.

On being questioned by prosecutor, the cop, Kim Potter, went in tears and said, at times "I didn't want to hurt anybody," and finally, "I'm sorry it happened."

The 49-year-old cop said that she looked to use Taser to subdue Wright when he pulled away from the officers and was getting back in his car, but accidently shot him once with handgun.

Not just this, the cop said that she wouldn't have pulled over his car if she had not been training another officer.

Before the defence rested case, Potter was the final witness. The cop said that she shot Wright in a moment of chaos on April 11 at Brooklyn Center. She and other officers were looking to arrest him over an outstanding warrant for a weapons violation.

According to prosecutors, Potter was an experienced officer, who had got training in use of Taser and deadly force. Her actions were unreasonable.

Meanwhile, attorneys of the police officer, who has quit, said that she made a mistake. But could be justified in using deadly force if she had meant to as another officer was also at risk of being dragged by Wright's car.
