India's Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly defeated China's Li Wen Mei and Liu Xuanxuan 21-14, 18-21, 21-12 in the women's doubles quarterfinals at the All England Open 2023 to make it to the semis in Birmingham on Friday.

The world No. 17 Indian pair had reached the semi-finals of the last edition of the All England Open as well but lost to China's Shu Xian Zhang and Yu Zheng. On Friday, Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly appeared to be in good form as they took the first game 21-14 with ease.

The Indian badminton players stumbled in the middle of the match after gaining an early lead, allowing the Chinese pair to reduce their lead. The Indians, however, made a strong comeback and won the first game.

Gopichand and Jolly will meet the winner of the contest between South Koreans Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee and Indonesia's Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti in their last-four match.

The only Indians still competing at the All England Open 2023 are Gopichand and Jolly after last year's finalist Lakshya Sen lost to Anders Antonsen on Thursday. HS Prannoy lost to Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Earlier, the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were ousted by Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China in the round of 16.

Indian badminton star and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu was knocked out in the first round while former world No. 1 Saina Nehwal had pulled out of the tournament on the opening day.

Continuing his winning start of the season, H.S. Prannoy sailed into the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament while Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand was knocked out by Bulgarian duo of Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva in the women`s doubles pre-quarterfinals here on Thursday.

Playing on Court 1 of the Axiata Arena, World No 8 Prannoy registered a 21-9, 15-21, 21-16 victory over 19th-ranked Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in over one hour of play and levelled up the head-to-head record with the Indonesian. 
 
Prannoy had a clear dominance in the first game as he wrapped it up with a 21-9 scoreline. Wardoyo, however, staged a comeback in the second game as the Indian player could not cope with his stunning shots and the match went into the decider. In the deciding game, both the players were engaged in a close fight initially before Prannoy opened up a five-point lead before the change of ends and quickly went on to seal the victory.

Hylo Open: Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand reach SFs, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy bow out

Ace Indian shuttler Treesa Jolly was part of the mixed team that won the silver medal at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022. 19-year-old Treesa&nbsp;has had a spectacular rise in the badminton circuit and has risen through the ranks to represent India at the highest level. One of the most talented youngsters in the country at present, Treesa has not had an easy journey to the top.

Treesa's father Jolly Mathew recently recalled his struggles and revealed how he had to make a lot of sacrifices to make her daughter realise the dream of taking up badminton as a career. Mathew revealed Treesa was just 7 when she started playing badminton and used to train even in rain due to the lack of facilities in her village.

“There was no badminton court or facilities in the village when Treesa started participating in the district under-11 category. She was just seven. In the next few years, she won medals in the State and national championships. But for winning major tournaments, she required facilities to practice, especially when it rained,” Mathew was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Treesa hails from Pulingome, a village in Kannur, in Kerala, India. The 19-year-old had started her badminton journey as a seven-year-old in the backyard of her house. Her father constructed an indoor court at their house and also acted as Treesa's first coach teaching her the tricks and trades of the game.&nbsp;

He also left his job as a physical education teacher at a university to travel with her to tournaments and support her in chasing her dreams. Mathew revealed the family faced a severe financial crisis and he had to borrow money by selling off gold to support her daughter as badminton is an expensive sport.

“I decided to construct an indoor court in the courtyard of our house. I sold gold and borrowed money from friends for this. It is an expensive game. The cost of equipment and travel took a toll on us both physically and financially. She had no sponsors then," Mathew recalled.

“I invested everything in her game, but her progress would not have been possible without the support of Anil Ramachandran, head of the Physical Education and Sports Science Department of the university, who took her under his fold while she was 13. He gave her free coaching and facilities,” he added.

Treesa's father Jolly Mathew recently recalled his struggles and revealed how he had to make a lot of sacrifices to make her daughter realise the dream of taking up badminton as a career. Mathew revealed Treesa was just 7 when she started playing badminton and used to train even in rain due to the lack of facilities in her village. “There was no badminton court or facilities in the village when Treesa started participating in the district under-11 category. She was just seven. In the next few years, she won medals in the State and national championships. But for winning major tournaments, she required facilities to practice, especially when it rained,” Mathew was quoted as saying by The Hindu. Treesa hails from Pulingome, a village in Kannur, in Kerala, India. The 19-year-old had started her badminton journey as a seven-year-old in the backyard of her house. Her father constructed an indoor court at their house and also acted as Treesa's first coach teaching her the tricks and trades of the game. Mathew revealed the family faced a severe financial crisis and he had to borrow money by selling off gold to support her daughter as badminton is an expensive sport. “I decided to construct an indoor court in the courtyard of our house. I sold gold and borrowed money from friends for this. It is an expensive game. The cost of equipment and travel took a toll on us both physically and financially. She had no sponsors then," Mathew recalled. “I invested everything in her game, but her progress would not have been possible without the support of Anil Ramachandran, head of the Physical Education and Sports Science Department of the university, who took her under his fold while she was 13. He gave her free coaching and facilities,” he added. Unseeded Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand on Friday became the first Indian pair to reach the semifinals of All England championships, joining in-form Lakshya Sen, who too reached the last four round of the men's singles competition here.

Playing their first Super 1000 event, women's doubles pair of Treesa and Gayatri, world no 46, recorded the biggest win of their career, a stunning 14-21 22-20 21-15 win over world championship silver medallists and second seeds Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan of Korea.

World Championships bronze medallist Sen had earlier in the day advanced to the men's singles semifinals after his opponent Lu Guang Zu of China gave a walkover due to an injury suffered in the last match.

Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand are the only Indians to have reached the semifinals before in the prestigious event.

The 20-year-old Sen from Almora, who had secured his maiden Super 500 title at India Open in January and then claimed a runner-up finish at the German Open last week, will face the winner of the match between Malaysia's sixth seed Lee Zii Jia and Japan's second seed Kento Momota in the last four round.

"We didn't have pressure, that was the main thing. They are good attacking players and we didn't play that much but we gave our best," Treesa said about their clash against the world no 2 Korean pair.

Gayatri, who is the daughter of India's chief national coach Pullela Gopichand, said they just tried to give a good fight.

"We just tried to give our best. We lost the first game and were down 18-20 in the second game but I just thought we just have to fight," said Gayatri, who along with Treesa, won their first title together at Infosys Foundation India International challenge.

Asked about their maiden semifinal appearance at such a big stage, Gayatri said: "Definitely, there will be expectations but we don't feel that pressure, we just have to give our best. We want to win it for our country."

The Indian duo had won their maiden Super 100 title at Odisha Open and finished second best at the preceding Syed Modi International Super 300 event.

"I didn't think we will get an entry first of all but when we got, we felt it was a good opportunity to play top players," Gayatri said.

The Indian pair were left behind in the opening game but they made it 9-9. The Koreans started to dominate the proceedings and finally broke off at 13-13 to grab the opening advantage. Treesa and Gayatri once again lagged behind 8-12 in the second game but they fought their way to 15-15.

However, the Korean managed to grab two match point advantage. The Indians kept their nerves to pull out the game and take the match to the decider. In the third game, Treesa and Gayatri opened up an early lead and even though the Koreans caught up at 8-8, the Indian combination jumped to a 15-9 lead and then kept their opponents at bay to enter the last four stage.
