United States-based media outlet CNN has apologised for its reporting on the last week's attack on a nursery in north-east Thailand. An apology from the journalists came after one of its reports showed footage of the building's blood-stained floor. The attack left 37 people dead, including 23 children.

Both journalists apparently went inside the building and started filming. They were even charged with trespassing and unauthorised photography of a crime scene. Later, the allegations against them were dropped.

After an initial investigation, they both were fined for working while on tourist visas. They also issued a video apology, which appears to be shot inside a police station. The video has been extensively shared on social media forums.

Thailand is mourning the death of 37 people, including 23 children, who were killed by an ex-policeman at a daycare centre in a knife and gun rampage on Thursday. Government buildings flew flags at half mast on Friday to remember the victims of the incident that left the nation shocked and seeking answers.

The police identified the attacker as Panya Khamrapm, a former member of the force who was dismissed over drug allegations and was also facing trial for a drug charge. After committing the heinous crime, he went home and shot his wife and child dead before killing himself.

Most of the children who died at the Uthai Sawan nursery were stabbed to death, police said. It is one of the worst child death tolls in a massacre by a single killer in recent history. The age range of children at the daycare centre ranged from two to five years, a local official said.

On Thursday (October 06), Thailand pulled off a huge upset win over Pakistan beating them by four wickets in a low-scoring thriller in the ongoing Women's Asia Cup, in Bangladesh. Opting to bat first, the Bismah Mahroof-led Women in Green only managed a paltry 116 for 5 in their full quota of overs. Sidra Ameen, their opening batter, was the top run-getter as she scored 56 but her stay comprised of 64 deliveries, at a slow strike rate of 87.50.

None of the Pakistani batters found momentum to go big from the word go and paid the price to only manage 116. In reply, Thailand batters also found it tough to get going as the surface proved to be a challenge but Natthakan Chantham's 51-ball 61 led her side to a four-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest. Nida Dar and Tuba Hassan accounted for two scalps each but couldn't prevent the opposition from hitting the winning runs.

With this win, Thailand have thrown the top-4 race wide open. It is not straight forward as it was previously. In the points table, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves still hold the top spot, with Pakistan's two-match winning run coming to an end. Pakistan and Sri Lanka follow suit, with four points each, with Bangladesh, Thailand and UAE taking the next slots, respectively. Malaysia remain the only winless side so far.

What they said at the post-match presentation

Natthakan Chantham | Player-of-the-Match: Looking to enjoy the game, play with the target in hand and just complete the game. Play according to the ball was my plan. Pakistan made me work hard as they are very good with spin.

Naruemol Chaiwai | Thailand captain: [Enjoyed] Very much. Pakistan are a strong side, we want to win against every team, at this moment we want to enjoy and the win will come automatically. No specific plan, the same plan everyday. The last two games we did not bowl the correct line or length, but today we did it.

Bismah Maroof | Pakistan captain: Disappointed with the way we batted. Our batters haven't showed the intent. They have to be blamed today. The set batters were there but they could not push on. 130+ could've been a good total and as a captain I'm disappointed we did not get there. In a tragic incident, at least 37 people, including children, were killed by a man armed with a gun and knife at a children's day-care centre in northeast Thailand on Thursday, police said. The gunman later went home and killed his wife and child before killing himself.

Police colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya identified the gunman as Panya Khamrab. He was a police lieutenant colonel and was dismissed from the force last year for drug use.

An eyewitness told news agency AFP that after the attacker fled the scene, he was driving erratically and tried to ram his vehicle into other people on the road. "The attacker rammed a motorbike and two people were injured. I sped off to get away from him," she said, adding that the attacker was well-known in the area as a drug addict.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha ordered an urgent probe into the "horrifying" incident.

"Concerning this horrifying incident... I would like to express my deepest sorrow and condolences to the families of the dead and injured," Prayut wrote on his official Facebook page. He added that he had told the national police chief to "fast-track an investigation".

The force said that the attacker, armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and a knife, opened fire on the childcare centre in Nong Bua Lam Phu province at about 12:30 pm (0530 GMT) before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

Jakkapat further informed that children, aged two to three years old, were among the casualties. Thai police are asking people not to share pictures and videos of the shooting and the victims on social media.

The mass killing comes less than a month after a serving army officer shot dead two colleagues at a military training base in the capital Bangkok.

Watch this report: × The force said that the attacker, armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and a knife, opened fire on the childcare centre in Nong Bua Lam Phu province at about 12:30 pm (0530 GMT) before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. While Thailand has high rates of gun ownership, mass shootings are extremely rare. (With inputs from agencies)

Thailand's Constitutional Court is due to deliver its verdict on Friday on a case that seeks to determine whether Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has already exceeded an eight-year limit as premier.

Prayuth, who seized power in a 2014 coup before formally becoming prime minister soon after, was suspended five weeks ago as the court deliberated the case filed by the opposition Pheu Thai party, which argues he should have left office last month.

The court must decide whether the eight years should include Prayuth's time as leader of the junta he installed after toppling the Pheu Thai government.

Some of his supporters say the eight years should be counted after 2017, when a new constitution took effect, or even from 2019, when an election was held and a new parliament chose him to head a coalition government.

The tenure issue is one of many opposition efforts to remove the retired general, including four parliamentary censure motions, a conflict of interest case over his continued use of a military residence, and months of protests that challenged his leadership and the monarchy.

At least two anti-government groups were planning to gather in Bangkok's central business district on Friday as the court reads its verdict, while police said 300 personnel will be deployed around the court.

Government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri urged the public to respect a verdict he said will clear up any uncertainty.

"The prime minister is ready to accept the verdict from the constitutional court whatever that may be," Anucha said.

The government said Tuesday that abortion up to 20 weeks will be permitted in Thailand, easing restrictions on pregnant people's access to the previously prohibited medical practice.

Up until February of last year, when it was made permissible for pregnant women up to 12 weeks, abortions were still prohibited in the kingdom, save in cases of rape or threats to the mother's life.

However, the country with a majority of Buddhists still views abortion with great stigma as a result of a 2010 incident in which 2,000 unlawfully aborted foetuses were found in a temple.

According to a government statement released on Tuesday, terminations of up to 20 weeks would now be allowed and "the termination will not count as a crime."

Abortion used to be illegal and may result in a fine of up to 10,000 baht ($263), up to six months in jail, or both.

Women seeking legal abortions who are above 12 weeks pregnant but under 20 weeks must meet specific requirements, according to a notice published in the Royal Gazette on Monday.

In accordance with the government's official statement, individuals in this group must "consult with medical consultants so that the woman has all of the information before she decides to terminate the pregnancy."

Despite the law's amendment in February of last year, access to abortions is still severely restricted throughout the kingdom.

According to Traisuree Traisoranakul, a deputy government spokesperson, women seeking abortions must be handled respectfully and in absolute confidence.

She continued by saying that they needed to be given all the medical data and shouldn't be under any pressure to make a choice.

30 days after the notification is published, the new law will take effect.

A court has asked Thailand's PM Prayuth Chan-o-cha to suspend active duties. The PM is accused of over-staying his term limit. Chan-o-cha came to power through a military coup in 2014. Thai constitution does not allow a PM to serve for more than 8 years. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Thai court suspends Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha

Thailand's Constitutional Court on Wednesday suspended Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha from carrying out official duties. The rare decision is a huge blow to the former army chief who first came to power after toppling an elected government in a 2014 coup. It is being perceived as a possibly brief victory for opposition parties that have sought to loosen Prayuth's hold on power through elections, parliamentary manoeuvres and legal cases.

Why did the suspension happen?

Prayuth's suspension came amidst a petition being considered by the court which states that he has reached an eight-year term limit set for prime ministers in the 2017 constitution written by a military appointed committee after the coup and passed in a referendum.

The petition has been filed by opposition parties that have failed to oust Prayuth in four no-confidence votes. It says that because the army junta led by Prayuth named him prime minister in August 2014, a few months after the coup, he reached the limit this week. However, some Prayuth supporters argue that his premiership in fact started in 2017, when the new constitution came into force.

Then there are others who say that after his pro-army party contested and won elections in 2019, that was when Prayuth's term began. Later that year, he was elected as civilian prime minister by the parliament, but the opposition said the entire process was skewed to favour pro-army candidates. But Prayuth's government maintained that the elections were free and fair.

Who's in charge now?

Following Prayuth's suspension, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, 77, will be the interim leader, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri told reporters. Prawit, a former army chief, is a longtime royalist figure and considered a political kingmaker in the conservative movement.

What's next?

If the court says that Prayuth had reached his term limit, the elected parliament would pick a new prime minister from among qualified candidates who ran in the 2019 election.

Prayuth's Palang Pracharat party will hold the cards in this case, since it heads a 17-party coalition in the parliament. This combined with the votes of a military-selected Senate should give it enough votes to decide the next prime minister.

Prayuth has 15 days to respond to his suspension, although the court did not set a timeline to issue a ruling on the petition itself.

Can Prayuth be restored?

Yes. If the court rules that Prayuth's term officially began in 2017 or 2019, he could be re-instated. In this case, he could stay in power until 2025 or 2027, depending on the results of the next elections.

Are elections on the cards?

The next elections are due by May next year under the constitution, but a sitting prime minister has the power to call early elections by dissolving the elected House of Representatives. In that case, an election would be held within 60 days after a house dissolution.

However, ruling party members have said elections are unlikely until after Thailand hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' summit in November in Bangkok.

Explainer: Why did a Thai court suspend Prime Minister Prayuth and what will happen next?

Thailand's Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha from official duties on Wednesday, after deciding to hear a petition to review his legally mandated eight-year term limit.

The petition was filed by the main opposition party, which argued that Prayuth's time spent as head of a military junta after he staged a coup when he was army chief in 2014 should count towards his constitutionally stipulated eight-year term.

Though Prayuth could be restored to his position when the court makes its ruling, his surprise suspension threw Thai politics into confusion.

Prayuth will have 15 days to respond, the court told media in a statement, adding that a panel of judges ruled five to four in favour of his suspension, starting from Wednesday.

"The court has considered the petition and related documents and sees that the facts from the petition are cause for questioning as demanded," it said.

Deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan is expected to take over as interim leader, another deputy prime minister, Wissanu Krea-ngam, told reporters on Monday.

It was not clear when the court would deliver a final ruling on the petition.

Prayuth ruled as head of a military council after he overthrew an elected government in 2014, and became a civilian prime minister in 2019, following an election held under a military-drafted constitution.

In its request for review, the main opposition party has argued that Prayuth should leave office this month because his time as junta chief should count towards his term.

Nearly two-thirds of Thais also want Prayuth out of office by this month, a recent poll showed.
