Indian Army on Friday (Jul 19) stated that two terrorists killed recently in the Keran sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district, along the Line of Control (LoC), were foreigners.

The terrorists were neutralised on Thursday (Jul 18) around noon when the troops observed them through thick foliage on the Indian side of LoC.

“On 17 July, a credible input was received from JKP, further corroborated by intelligence agencies, regarding a group of foreign terrorists likely to infiltrate through Keran Sector," an army spokesman said.

After spotting the rogue elements, shots were fired between the two sides, leading to an intense fight. Two terrorists were killed as the army recovered weapons and a Pakistani identity card from them.

“This was the third such successful anti infiltration operation on the Line of Control over the last few weeks and underscores the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintain the sanctity of the Line of Control and the robust counter-infiltration posture towards maintaining peace in Kashmir Valley,” the spokesman added.

In India's Jammu and Kashmir, encounters with Pakistan-backed terrorists have led to the seizure of highly encrypted Chinese telecom-hear ultra set - an equipment originally meant for use by the Pakistani Army.

J&K: Seizure of mobile handsets used by terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir raises alarm

Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a spike in terror attacks in recent weeks and during these operations' security forces have recovered arms and ammunition along with communication devices from various parts of the Union Territory. Security forces have recently recovered Chinese-made telecommunication equipment from the terrorists in Jammu Kashmir. These devices are meant for the Pakistan Army but are being recovered from the terror groups in Jammu Kashmir.

In recent recoveries made by the security forces, highly encrypted Chinese telecom gear known as "Ultra Set" mostly used by the Pakistan Army was recovered from the terrorists. Jammu and Kashmir Police's DGP recently said that there are around 70-80 foreign terrorists active in the Union Territory and most of them had recently infiltrated. This clearly indicates that these terror groups are hand in glove with the Pakistan Army.

The Chinese equipment has been often recovered by the security forces in the Kashmir Valley from the terrorists active in Jammu and Kashmir. In a recent hideout bust in North Kashmir, Sources in the security forces said that they had recovered the 'Ultra Set' handsets from the operation site while after the recent attacks in Jammu, the forces also recovered it from the terrorists in the area.

These Chinese-made "Ultra Set" handsets, mostly combine cell-phone capabilities with specialised radio equipment that does not rely on traditional mobile technologies like Global System for Mobile (GSM) or Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA). "Ultra Set" handsets work on radio waves for message transmission and reception, with each "Ultra Set" linked to a control station located across the border. Sources say that Chinese satellites are used to carry these messages which are compressed to bytes from the handset to the master server in Pakistan for its onward transmission.

Recovery of this equipment from the terror groups also indicates the support that the Chinese government is providing to Pakistan, which eventually lands up in the hands of these terror groups. This also comes in the backdrop of China Pakistan meeting regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The 3rd round of the Joint Consultative Mechanism (JCM) of Political Parties on CPEC and the Pakistan-China Political Parties Forum was held in Islamabad. In the meeting, Both China and Pakistan reaffirmed the salience of CPEC and pledged to make joint efforts for its up-gradation and for further strengthening the Pakistan-China All-weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership.

The United States on Friday (Jun 14) designated Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM), the largest neo-Nazi group in Sweden, and its three leaders as terrorist, citing its long history of violent attacks and posing a threat to Americans. This is only the second time that Washington has designated a foreign White supremacist organisation and its leaders as terrorists.

The leaders designated as terrorists are Tor Fredrik Vejdeland and senior members of the group Pär Öberg and Leif Robert Eklund.

NRM, three leaders designated as terrorists

The NRM and three of its top leaders have been placed on the Specially Designated Global Terrorists list, said the US State Department in a statement.

This is the first time that US President Joe Biden’s administration has made such a designation of a White supremacist group. The designation is part of a broader effort to crack down on White extremists, the Biden administration had previously said.

Former President Donald Trump’s administration in 2020 added the Russian Imperial Movement (RIM) and its leaders to the list after years of largely targeting Islamist and far-left movements overseas.

The NRM’s terror designation was based on its history of violent activity rooted in an “openly racist, anti-immigrant, antisemitic, anti-LGBTQI+ platform,” said the officials in Washington.

“The group’s members and leaders have carried out violent attacks against political opponents, protestors, journalists, and other perceived adversaries,” the US State Department said.

The US also alleged that members of the movement have collected and prepared weapons and explosive materials, as well as organised training in violent tactics on behalf of the group, in a bid to further their goals.

“The United States remains deeply concerned about the racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist threat worldwide and is committed to countering the transnational components of violent white supremacy,” said the US State Department.

It added that the group is being designated for having committed or attempted to commit “acts of terrorism that threaten the security of United States nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States.”

The designation would freeze any US-based assets that the group or its three leaders have and they would also be blocked from using the American financial system.

The attack occurred as a convoy transporting Chinese engineers was passing by to the Dasu hydroelectric project site from Islamabad. A vehicle laden with explosives, parked on the roadside, was detonated, causing devastation.

This incident marked the second attack on Chinese workers at the same hydroelectric project. A previous terrorist attack in July 2021 claimed the lives of 13 individuals, including nine engineers.

India's Ministry of External Affairs, in a strongly worded comment, denied the allegations of carrying out targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan, as was reported by the UK daily The Guardian.

India's Ministry of External Affairs, in a strongly worded comment, denied the allegations of carrying out targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan, as was reported by the UK daily The Guardian. The ministry, reiterating its earlier statement, said that all the allegations were "false and malicious anti-India propaganda". The ministry, quoting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, said that targeted killings in other countries were "not the government of India's policy". What does the report say? The remarks of India's ministry were part of the report published in The Guardian in which it has been claimed that New Delhi "has implemented a policy of targeting those it considers hostile to India". The report claimed that nearly 20 such killings of terrorists were swiftly carried out by the Indian intelligence agency RAW since the brutal attack on Pulwama, which was allegedly carried out by Pakistan in 2019. The documents submitted by the Pakistani authorities to back the claims which were published in the global newspaper were unverified and hence, raised questions over the authenticity of the claims. India's continuous rejection of 'absurd' claims made on global level This is not the first time such 'absurd' claims have been made against India on a global level. India was earlier accused by the United States and Canada of plotting to kill Khalistani terrorists on foreign soil. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September last year went on to claim that there were "credible allegations" which proved the involvement of India in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was a Canadian citizen and a wanted terrorist in India, He was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey in June. The allegations were rejected by India as "absurd". Watch: Indian economy's strengths & challenges: Explained The United States later claimed that an attempt to kill Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun was foiled by them. According to the US, the plot to kill Pannun was orchestrated by Indian national Nikhil Gupta along with an un-named Indian government official. Reacting to this, former foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, "India takes such inputs seriously since it impinges on our own national security interests as well. Issues in the context of US inputs are already being examined by relevant departments." (With inputs from agencies)

The latest report spells more trouble for X now this is according to a certain group called The Tech Transparency Project which happens to be some kind of digital research nonprofit. X reportedly has accepted payments for subscriptions from accounts of organizations and other groups that are barred from doing business in the United States.

Elon Musk's X received payments from terrorists

Elon Musk's X has allegedly given subscription perks to designated terrorist groups as well as others who have been barred from operating in the United States, according to a report published by Tech Transparency Project (TTP).

In the report, the campaigners claimed that X gave blue check marks to accounts which were related to Hezbollah members, among others.

After the users of X make a payment of $8 (£6.40) per month, they receive a blue tick which allows better promotion and longer posts.

After the report, some of the ticks were removed by X, as the platform claimed that its security was "robust".

The decision taken by Musk to charge for the check marks emerged as one of the most controversial changes after he took over Twitter in 2022 and the critics said that the move will make issues of disinformation worse and the platform will become vulnerable to impersonators.

The TTP claimed that an account run by Ansar Allah, who is known as a Houthi, also apparently paid for its blue check mark. The account does not have a blue tick anymore and has more than 23,000 followers.

In both the United States and the United Kingdom, sanctions have been issued against the Houthis. After a series of coordinated attacks in Balochistan province, including one on a high-security Mach jail housing nearly 800 prisoners, Pakistani security forces successfully eliminated at least 21 militants of the separatist group - Baloch Liberation Army Mujahid Brigade.

In Pakistan, Balochistan has seen the emergence of various Baloch nationalist movements advocating for greater autonomy or outright independence. Some of these groups are the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), and Baloch Republican Army (BRA).

The latest operation was initiated after the militants bombed several Mach town areas including attacks in Kolpur areas on Monday (Jan 29). According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistani military's media wing, four security personnel and two civilians lost their lives during the operation.

Notably, ISPR officially confirmed the death of 12 militants but reports citing security officials disclosed that 21 militants were killed in the operation.

The Pentagon has vowed to take "all necessary actions" to defend the US troops after Iran-backed terrorists killed US soldiers and wounded several others in a drone strike on Al-Tanf, a US military site in Jordan on Sunday (Jan 28).

Recently discharged Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made the statement and asserted that Pentagon was chalking up a plan to avenge the drone attack.

“The president and I will not tolerate attacks on US forces and we will take all necessary actions to defend the US and our troops,” Austin said at the Pentagon on Monday (Jan 29).

Pentagon's statement comes a day after US President Joe Biden also blamed Iran for the strike and vowed that Washington would respond.

"While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq," Biden said in a statement on the attack.

"We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt -- we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing," he added.

The three US soldiers killed in the attack were also named by the Pentagon on Monday. They have been identified as army reservists Sgt William Jerome Rivers, Spc Breonna Alexsondria Moffett and Spc Kennedy Sanders.

Sunday's strike was the first deadly attack against US forces since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted on Oct 7 last year.

Pentagon vows action after Jordan attack, releases names of 3 soldiers killed as Iran denies involvement

The United States on Wednesday (Jan 17) re-listed Yemen's Houthis, an Iran-backed group comprising individuals of the Zaydi sect within Shi'ite Islam, as a specially designated global terrorist group. The White House cited "unprecedented attacks against United States military forces and international maritime vessels operating in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden", one of the world's most crucial shipping routes for global trade.

Yemen's Houthi rebels, who control most of the country's north as well as the strategically valuable Bab al-Mandeb Strait, vowed in November 2023 that they would target Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea in response to Israeli military operations in Gaza.

However, the United States claims that ships linked to 55 states worldwide have been attacked as of Jan 15, 2024.

Situation in Yemen: Between January 2021 and April 2022

Originally known as Ansar Allah (Partisans of God), the US designated Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) on January 10, 2021, during the last few days of the Trump administration. The group had been in a years-long civil war with the internationally recognised Saudi-backed Yemeni government that led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the region.

A little more than a month later in February 2021, the US State Department under President Joe Biden, citing the need to facilitate aid delivery into Yemen, removed the SDGT designation and also de-listed Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) status for the Houthis.

Between February 2021 and April 2022, the Houthis continued to expand their territorial hold in Yemen amid failed efforts by the UN and US envoys to engineer a truce.

The de-listing of Houthis as "terrorists" in February 2021 occurred owing to the pressure the Biden administration faced as Houthis disallowed any aid from reaching Yemen's people, said Kabir Taneja, Fellow, Strategic Studies Programme at Observer Research Foundation.

"This also helped Saudis, who are in open negotiations with the Houthis after being at war with them since 2015," Taneja added.

In April 2022, the internationally-recognised Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi ceded power to a presidential council, and a truce was agreed upon.

This truce, although fragile, continues to hold to date amid signs of its sustenance with successful prisoner exchange efforts between the two warring sides.

Israel-Hamas war: Why Houthis have been re-listed as 'terrorists' by the US?

On January 17, 2024, the White House designated Houthis as a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist' (SDGT) entity.

Hours before the above development, Taneja described such occurrence as a "direct consequence of the campaign of Houthis against international shipping in the Red Sea".

The attack by Houthis on merchant shipping vessels on the Red Sea shipping route — the passage to 12 per cent of the world's ship-borne trade — has increased shipping costs by up to 60 per cent for the goods destined for Europe from Asia, according to Container xChange, an online container logistics platform for container trading and container leasing.

Implications for the region

The truce brokered in April 2022 between warring parties in the Yemeni civil war was engineered following years of Saudi-led negotiations.

"The Houthis have been involved in substantive negotiations with Saudi Arabia, a US ally, over a Saudi withdrawal from Yemen, which the US supports. That wouldn't be a good time to make such a designation," said Joost R. Hiltermann, Program Director, Middle East and North Africa at International Crisis Group.

"From our perspective, such designations are counter-productive, also because there is no commonly accepted definition of 'terrorist organisation', a highly politicised term," Hiltermann added.

Houthis have grown into the most powerful war machine in Yemen whose threat to the shipping lanes in the Red Sea has forced the United States to form a multinational naval task force to counter them.

"The Biden administration had no intention of making such a designation lightly against any group, without a provocation," Hiltermann said.

How powerful are Houthis: Challenges and Asymmetry

Weeks before the October 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel that pushed the region to the worst state of war in decades, the Houthis on September 21 held a parade in Yemeni capital Sana'a. The parade showed weapon systems in the hands of an irregular army.

There were Mi-8 transportation helicopters as well as the Malah boats, often deployed to lay mines in the sea.

Houthis are now attacking these shipping lanes with the naval mines and airpower they have acquired over the years.

Some other weapons systems the Houthis have include the Fledermaus Radar, surface-to-air missiles, improvised armour, and T-55 tanks.

The Houthis also have Tochka ballistic missiles and F-5 supersonic light fighter aircraft. There also are Iranian-origin Hatem/Khaybar Shekan and Badr-4 ballistic missiles.

They also have passive infrared tracking systems, drones, loitering munitions, and Iran-origin Shahab 3/Ghadr missiles, besides an unspecified but large number of Raqeeb UAVs, which can have a range of up to 1,400 km.

Such vast expansion of Houthis' capacities, as shown by their arsenal, characterises Iran's support for the movement. Tehran looks at the Houthis, a revivalist Shia movement, as a wider part of its resistance against the US and Israel.

"Houthis have benefited from structural and institutional support from Iran. This has allowed them to gain capacities ranging from ballistic and anti-ship missiles to underwater weapons and drones. Without Iranian help, all this would not be possible," Taneja said.

Note: The story has been updated to reflect the asymmetric security challenge posed by Houthis in West Asia.

India: Encounter on at South Kashmir’s Shopian district between forces and terrorists

The Indian Army has been carrying out a combing operation in the Thanamandi area of Rajouri sector, Jammu and Kashmir, for the past one week after witnessing a spike in terror activities.

It started after two army vehicles were ambushed by terrorists on December 21, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers and injuries to two others. The forces had inputs that two or three terrorists from across the border had been moving around the forest area.

These terrorists are believed to be infiltrating from Pakistan, and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and are armed with the latest Chinese-made weaponry and communication devices, say security forces.

From rifles, pistols, grenades, drones, and bodysuit cameras to communication devices, the army has found these Chinese-made gadgets from the encounter sites.

The Indian security forces have revealed repeatedly that foreign terrorists have been active in Jammu and Kashmir and are armed with weapons that are usually used by the Pakistan Army.

All the communication devices and arms that are supplied to the Pakistan Army from China on a regular basis end up with these terrorists mostly affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Sources in the security establishment told WION that Pakistan has been actively working on reviving terrorism in Rajouri and Poonch areas, which border Pakistan.

Sources say that about 25 to 30 Pakistani terrorists have managed to successfully infiltrate into the Union Territory through the International Border, close to Poonch and Rajouri sectors.

Most of these terrorists are affiliated with terror organisations like Jaish and Lashkar, they say.

Sources also say that the revival of terrorism in these areas is part of a bigger plan by Pakistan and China. Its main motive is to put pressure on the Indian Army so that they withdraw troops deployed at the Indo-China border and re-deploy them in areas like Rajouri and Poonch.
