Andy Murray hinted that this could be his last season after he recorded his 500th hardcourt win with a 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3 victory over Canada's Denis Shapovalov in the first round of the Dubai&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Championships on Monday. Murray joined Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi and Rafa Nadal as the only players to reach the 500th tour-level win milestone on the surface in the professional era.

"Obviously hardcourt has been a great surface for me over the years and 500 is a lot of matches so I'm very proud of that," Murray said. "There aren't many players that have done that, so, great to get to 500 before I'm done."

It was just the second win this year for the 36-year-old who suffered a first round exit at the recent Australian Open, and Murray has failed to go beyond the third round of a Grand Slam since reaching the Wimbledon quarters in 2017.

Murray, former world number one and winner of three Grand Slam singles titles, lost his second round match in Qatar last week to 18-year-old Jakub Mensik, and during the defeat he appeared to shout "this game is not for me anymore".

He played down those comments after Monday's win in Dubai, but admitted that the end of his career could be near.

Last month after another first round exit in Montpellier, Murray responded to a BBC article in which a journalist questioned whether his bravely soldering on will damage his legacy. ""Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour," Murray responded on social media platform X. "Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I'm not most people and my mind works differently," he added. "I won't quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I'm capable of."

Karen Khachanov ended Jakub Mensik's bid to become the 10th youngest ATP champion with a straight sets win in the Qatar Open final on Saturday.

The 17th-ranked Russian won 7-6 (14/12), 6-4 to claim a sixth career title against 18-year-old Mensik, the youngest finalist at a tour event since Carlos Alcaraz at Umag in 2021.

"Every title is a special one," Khachanov, who didn't drop a set all week, said on court. "Every time, you want to win. We play around 22 tournaments per season and at the end of the day, you compete every week. For sure here in Doha it is one of the nicest trophies."

Czech teenager Mensik, ranked 116 who will break into the top 100 next week, was playing in just his third main draw event following breakout runs to the third round of the 2023 US Open and a second-round appearance at the Australian Open last month.

"Today I couldn't believe it was the same score, same tie-break... I stayed strong, I'm extremely happy that I won the first set. It lifted me a lot and gave me a lot of confidence to step up in the second."

Khachanov also faced down 16 aces from the young Czech.

Tennis: Top seed Andrey Rublev shocked in Doha quarter-finals

Coco Gauff said a heated exchange with the chair umpire midway through her match with Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday had spurred her on to complete a 2-6 6-4 6-3 victory and reach the quarter-finals of the Dubai&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Championships.

The U.S. Open champion lost the first set but was leading 4-2 in the second when her first serve at deuce, which Pliskova returned into the net, was called out.

The American challenged the call and her review was successful but instead of awarding Gauff the point French chair umpire Pierre Bacchi told the 19-year-old to replay it.

That sparked a lengthy back-and-forth between the pair, with Guaff's repeated requests to speak to a supervisor denied by the umpire.

"It definitely gave me some adrenaline," said Gauff, who eventually composed herself and won the replayed point. "Luckily I was able to overcome that pretty quickly. I'm glad I was able to reset.

Dubai Tennis Championships: Coco Gauff fuelled in heated exchange with umpire in QF win

World number two Carlos Alcaraz retired from his first-round match Tuesday at the ATP Rio Open after rolling his right ankle on just the second point of the contest against Thiago Monteiro.

The Spanish star took a medical timeout, had the ankle taped and won the first game but after dropping his serve in the second game he called it quits, in another setback to a so-far disappointing 2024 campaign.

Shortly after the match Alcaraz told reporters the decision to withdraw was a "precaution" and that the physiotherapists who treated him had indicated the injury "is not serious."

"I spoke with the physiotherapist on the court and we decided, together, that I would continue to see if it improved. It didn't, so we preferred to be careful and withdraw as a precaution," Alcaraz said, adding that he would have further tests on Wednesday.

The two-time Grand Slam winner's tough start to 2024 included a four-set defeat by Alexander Zverev in the Australian Open quarter-finals.

Last Saturday he fell to 21st-ranked Chilean Nicolas Jarry in the semi-finals at Buenos Aires, and hasn't won an ATP title since his stunning Wimbledon triumph over Novak Djokovic last July.

Hopes that he could start turning things around in Rio -- where he lifted the trophy in 2022 and finished runner-up to Britain's Cameron Norrie last year -- were quickly dashed.

He and 117th-ranked Brazilian Monteiro were two points into the match when Alcaraz's right foot stuck in the red clay surface at Jockey Club Brasileiro, where rain had delayed the start of play for three hours.

Four of the day's tennis matches were postponed until Wednesday and the first players to take the court on Tuesday played in misty conditions.

<h2>Those things happen</h2>

That had cleared by the time Alcaraz and Monteiro squared off and Alcaraz said court conditions were not to blame.

"Those things happen, even more so on clay," Alcaraz said.

"It wasn't a problem with the court, I got hurt in a change of direction and that happens on this type of surface," added the Spaniard, who was slow to rise after taking a hard fall, limping to his chair and putting a towel over his face before the trainer arrived.

Alcaraz's coach Juan Carlos Ferrero looked on with concern from the stands as Alcaraz, with a grimace and a slight limp, returned to action and won the opening game.

But after dropping his serve in the second he opted not to continue.

"It's really sad to win in this way, because I know how hard every player works to be ready for a tournament of this magnitude," &nbsp;Monteiro said.

"I just wish him a speedy recovery, that it's nothing serious or that it won't affect his season," added the 29-year-old left-hander, who improved to 2-0 against Alcaraz, whom he beat in the round of 16 of the Melbourne-1 in 2021.

The injury comes with Italy's Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner closing in on Alcaraz's world number two ranking.

Alcaraz leads Sinner -- who won the Rotterdam title on Sunday -- by just 535 points and has 1,000 points to defend next month at the prestigious hardcourt tournament in Indian Wells, California.

US Open champion Coco Gauff said on Monday that tennis can follow basketball's example and have men facing women in specialised contests such as Serena Williams and Australian Nick Kyrgios in serve targets.

Gauff was speaking after Stephen Curry sank his last four shots from the right corner to defeat Sabrina Ionescu 29-26 in a 3-point NBA-Women's NBA Challenge on Saturday at NBA All-Star weekend.

The first-ever shootout of the sexes was a groundbreaking showdown between elite guards -- Golden State's Curry, the NBA's all-time 3-point basket leader, and WNBA single-season 3-point record holder Ionescu of the New York Liberty.

Both players shot from the NBA three-point line, which is farther away from the basket than the WNBA three-point line.

Speaking to reporters in Dubai, where she is competing in the WTA tournament, Gauff was asked what skills challenge, akin to the ones featured at the weekend, would work in tennis.

The 19-year-old American said she would love to see Serena Williams and Nick Kyrgios go toe-to-toe in a serve targets contest.

"There's also like the dropshot one," she said. "Ons (Jabeur) and Carlos (Alcaraz) would be a cool matchup against that. There could be maybe a consistency challenge."

Gauff hailed Ionescu's efforts against Curry.

"I think the Sabrina and Steph competition was great," said Gauff. "I think most people were rooting for Sabrina. What she did was incredible, especially also shooting from the NBA line."

"Steph is definitely the greatest three-point shooter ever."

Gauff said she would hope the man against woman shootout is not a one-off.

"I just hope they continue to do this," she said. "It just humbles a lot of men in the world. I really like that.

"Especially basketball, that type of competition, it's something physicality doesn't always matter.

"I think that's what makes it cool."

Gauff is seeded number three this week and will open her campaign against Italian lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Tuesday.

The American is coming off an early exit in Doha.

She will be looking to recapture the form that saw her start the season with a title in Auckland and reach the Australian Open semi-finals where she lost to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

"It was just a bad day at the office," Gauff said of her performance in Qatar. "I'm not going to let it define how the rest of this week will go."

Two former world No.1s booked their spots in the Dubai second round on Monday.

Victoria Azarenka eased past Arantxa Rus 6-2, 6-4 and Karolina Pliskova improved her record against Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai to a perfect 9-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

"Ons (Jabeur) and Carlos (Alcaraz) would be a cool matchup against that. There could be maybe a consistency challenge." Gauff hailed Ionescu's efforts against Curry. "I think the Sabrina and Steph competition was great," said Gauff. "I think most people were rooting for Sabrina. What she did was incredible, especially also shooting from the NBA line." "Steph is definitely the greatest three-point shooter ever." Gauff said she would hope the man against woman shootout is not a one-off. "I just hope they continue to do this," she said. "It just humbles a lot of men in the world. I really like that. "Especially basketball, that type of competition, it's something physicality doesn't always matter. "I think that's what makes it cool." Gauff is seeded number three this week and will open her campaign against Italian lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Tuesday. "I'm not going to let it define how the rest of this week will go." Two former world No.1s booked their spots in the Dubai second round on Monday. Victoria Azarenka eased past Arantxa Rus 6-2, 6-4 and Karolina Pliskova improved her record against Chinese wildcard Zhang Shuai to a perfect 9-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Jarry, ranked 21 in the world, claimed his first win over Alcaraz in three meetings, wrapping up victory on a second match point after almost two hours on court.

"Third time lucky," Jarry said of his first win over Alcaraz. "Carlos is one of the best players so it means a lot, especially after the battles I've had a couple of days ago. It's been very tough physically, so I'm very happy to be able to come back.

"I didn't start very well and couldn't win points on his serve, but I came back little by little."

The Chilean didn't face a break point in the opening set and after the pair exchanged breaks in the first two games of the second set, Jarry claimed the decisive break in the eighth game.

Jarry will face Argentine wildcard Facundo Diaz Acosta, ranked 87, in Sunday's final of the clay-court tournament.

The Rotterdam title may pale in comparison to winning the Australian Open Grand Slam but Jannik Sinner said his victory in the ATP 500 event was still important to him after the Italian rose to a career-high number three in the world rankings. Sinner, who lifted his first major at Melbourne Park by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final, stretched his winning run in 2024 to 12 matches with a 7-5 6-4 victory over Alex de Minaur in the Rotterdam final on Sunday.

The 22-year-old's second trophy of the season means he will leapfrog Medvedev to number three when the rankings are updated later on Monday. "Every time you win a title, it doesn't matter how big, it means a lot," Sinner said. "I had a bit more attention (as Australian Open champion), but when you earn something, you have to deal with that. I felt like I was trying to put 100% effort into everything I've done and that's the result of this week. "It's going to start again from zero at Indian Wells, so I'm already trying to improve. Let's see what's coming."

Defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek was on Friday handed a walkover into the Qatar Open final where Elena Rybakina will stand in her way of a third successive title at the Gulf event.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek had been scheduled to face Karolina Pliskova in her semi-final.

However, the Czech, who won the Cluj tournament in Romania last weekend, withdrew suffering from a lower back injury.

Former Wimbledon champion Rybakina was stronger at the key moments as she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-4 to reach Saturday's final.

Rybakina, the third seed, converted four of six break points while her unseeded opponent could only exploit one of the nine she had.

"I am happy that in the end I managed to finish the match, playing a little better in these important moments," Rybakina, who represents Kazakhstan, said in her on-court interview.

Rybakina broke Pavlyuchenkova in the fifth game of the opening set and broke again in the eighth.

Pavlyuchenkova saved three set points in the next game but also squandered a break point of her own before succumbing.

"The first set it was very close, we were both fighting," said Rybakina.

Rybakina broke easily in the second-set opener before holding serve to take a sixth straight game.

Pavlyuchenkova held to end that streak and then had six break points in the next game, but could take none of them.

She finally converted her eighth break point as she came back from 30-0 down in the eighth game. She then held serve as Rybakina wobbled on her forehand.

After Alcaraz swept through the opening set, the Argentine outsider steadied the ship, carving out a break of serve for an early lead in the second.

Spanish star Alcaraz retrieved the break immediately and served for the match at 5-3.

However, Carabelli broke back, saved a match point and then another to level the set at 5-5.

Alcaraz held for 6-5 before his opponent finally cracked in the 12th game of a nervy tie which featured a total of 11 service breaks.

"It was a really tough match. He's a really good fighter, a really good player with good rhythm. He was really tough to beat," said Alcaraz. "I started really nervous, I'm not going to lie, with the crowd behind him, supporting him. I think it's normal, obviously, but really happy with my first match on clay since the French Open. Hopefully I can keep going better and better."

Two-time Grand Slam title winner Alcaraz will face another qualifier, Italy's 152nd-ranked Andrea Vavassori for a spot in the semi-finals.

Second seed Cameron Norrie, who was the runner-up to Alcaraz at the tournament in 2023, was knocked out by Argentina's Federico Coria 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Rafael Nadal said Wednesday he is unsure if he will be ready to return to action in Doha next week after he withdrew from the Australian Open with a muscle tear.

The Spaniard missed most of last year with a hip injury sustained in Melbourne but made his comeback at the Brisbane International in the lead-up to this year's Australian Open.

However, a small muscle tear forced the 37-year-old to pull out of the season's first Grand Slam.

"It's going to be very tight for Doha. I've had some discomfort these past few weeks and I'm a bit on the limit," Nadal said in an interview with La Sexta television that will be broadcast in full later Wednesday.

"At this point every blow I take, every injury, is a setback not only in tennis and physically, but also mentally."

The 22-time Grand Slam winner is far more optimistic about playing in Indian Wells, the year's first Masters 1000 event which runs from March 6-17 in the California desert.&nbsp;

"I am 100% confident of being in Indian Wells, it's a very special tournament for me. I don't know if it's going to be the last time I play in it, so I would like to be in Indian Wells, for sure."

Nadal was named on the entry list last month for the Qatar Open, to be held February 19-24.

"I would love to be in Doha, what I know is that it's cutting it fine. I see the decision for Doha more at the last minute. I will travel to Indian Wells for sure if there is nothing wrong," he said.

Nadal reiterated that his "main goal is to try to get to the clay season as healthy as possible, to at least give me the chance to enjoy this part of the season", which the Spaniard has dominated in his career.

He has won a record 14 French Open titles and holds an astonishing 112-3 win-loss record at Roland Garros.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal concedes scheduled return in Doha 'very tight'

Former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu said she would make changes to her tournament scheduling following her first round defeat by world number 30 Anhelina Kalinina at the Qatar Open on Monday. The 21-year-old suffered a huge dip in form the season after her 2021 Flushing Meadows triumph, and then spent eight months on the sidelines during an injury-hit 2023 following wrist and ankle surgeries.

Returning to the tour last month, Raducanu lost in the second round at Auckland, the Australian Open and Abu Dhabi, before crashing 6-0 7-6(6) to Kalinina in Doha, and the Briton is now planning to head home after a busy period on tour. "It's hard for me to get used to the tour schedule," world number 262 Raducanu told Sky Sports. "It's one tournament then another straight away. "I need to schedule my tournaments a bit better and try to get more matches under my belt."

Raducanu will need to be handed a wildcard to play next week in Dubai but media reports said she would take a break before returning for Indian Wells and Miami next month. Raducanu made 48 unforced errors in her latest defeat and said playing during the day may have contributed to her lacklustre display.

"I was struggling with everything, serve, return, forehand, backhand. To be honest I felt like I never really got into it. It was a combination of things," she added. "Honestly, I need to practice training outside a bit more because it's different and also the light, conditions, shadows - it's hard to see the ball, I found towards the end. "When the tennis isn't there, you have to at least try to fight and I think I did that in the second set."

Naomi Osaka may have lost three straight matches following her successful return from maternity break, but the former world number one said ahead of the Qatar Open that the only way was up from here. The four-times Grand Slam champion, who gave birth to her daughter Shai in July, won her first match after 15 months out at the Brisbane International last month before falling to Karolina Pliskova in the second round.

Osaka crashed to opening defeats at the Australian Open and Abu Dhabi against Caroline Garcia and Danielle Collins, but the 26-year-old from Japan said she had not lost her confidence. "It definitely is hard for me to not be tough on myself, but after Abu Dhabi I actually have more confidence in myself, which is a little strange," Osaka told reporters.

Osaka, who opens her Doha campaign against 15th seed Garcia later on Monday, said she preferred to face tough opponents like the Frenchwoman. "I learn more from the matches. So of course it's funny to hear I'm playing her again but I'm a little happy," Osaka said. "She's always been a really nice person and I know I'm not supposed to think that about my opponent, but I know we also share the same birthday. At the end of the day, a Libran is going to win."

Tennis: Naomi Osaka optimistic despite string of defeats following return ahead of Qatar Open

Former Wimbledon and French Open champion Simona Halep was confident she would soon return to tennis after exiting sport's top court on Friday after three days of proceedings to appeal a doping suspension that could end her career.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic to play Indian Wells for first time since 2019

Former world number one Simona Halep appeared before the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Wednesday to appeal her four-year doping ban in what is expected to be a three-day hearing.

The 32-year-old Romanian was suspended last September by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after two separate doping infractions.

The two-time Grand Slam singles champion tested positive for roxadustat after the US Open in 2022 and was charged with a separate second anti-doping breach last year relating to irregularities in her athlete biological passport.

Halep, smiling and surrounded by her legal team, was seen entering CAS headquarters at the Palais Beaulieu in Lausanne, Switzerland but made no statement.

Saudi Arabia will host a new elite&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;exhibition featuring Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal with three other Grand Slam winners in October, the country's General Entertainment Authority has announced. Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune will also play at the 'Six Kings Slam', which will form part of the Saudi cultural and entertainment festival Riyadh Season, organisers said.

With Sinner having recently won the Australian Open, Dane Rune is the only player on the six-man roster without a Grand Slam title. Spaniard Nadal, who signed up as an ambassador for the Saudi Arabian&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Federation last month, said he was looking forward to the event.

"After some other&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;players have done so, I am very excited to play for the first time in Riyadh," the 22-times Grand Slam champion said in the press release. While exhibition events in the Gulf are nothing new, they are usually played during breaks in the ATP season or after it has finished. The ATP has a full schedule in October, including mandatory Masters 1000 tournaments in Shanghai and Paris.

Saudi Arabia will also host the season-ending Next Gen Finals for men's under-21 players in Jeddah from 2023 to 2027, the ATP announced last August. The Swiss led the tie 2-1 after Huesler and Leandro Riedi won Saturday's doubles, but Tallon Griekspoor kept the hosts alive by seeing off Riedi in two tie-break sets.

"We had to win and it was up to me to do it," said Griekspoor. "That is what you have to do as a team leader. I really didn't feel any tension - I really enjoyed it."

Canada, the 2022 champions, seized a 3-1 lead over South Korea to clinch victory on Saturday in Montreal when Gabriel Diallo defeated Hong Seong-chan 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.

Two-time winners Croatia are level at 1-1 with Belgium as are Argentina and Kazakhstan.

Taylor Fritz then eased past Vladyslav Orlov 6-3, 6-4 to complete an American sweep.

Davis Cup 2024: Pakistan set to host India for first time in 60 years

Andy Murray is not having the best of runs at present. Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion,&nbsp;lost in the opening round of his 2023 season-opening tournament in Brisbane to Grigor Dimitrov and went down to 32nd seed Martin Tomas Etcheverry in the first round of the Australian Open early this month. On Tuesday (Jan 31), he suffered a third-round exit&nbsp;at Open Sud de France in Montpellier. Thus, talks of his retirement have been doing the rounds. After his recent loss, a newspaper coloumn wrote on Murray's&nbsp;decision to continue playing despite lack of consistency.&nbsp;

Murray, on Tuesday (Jan 30), responded to the newspaper coloumn with a hard-hitting post. He wrote, "Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour. I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently. I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of." Moreover, American veteran Andy Roddick joined in and backed Murray as well.&nbsp;

Roddick, former US Open champion, wrote on X, "Preach! Imagine telling an accomplished iconic adult your opinion on what they should choose for work and when they should do it. This is such a dumb, thirsty article. Can’t take a legacy away. Accomplishment lives forever."

Murray returned to the court after surgery for his recurring hip injury in 2019. Since then, he has not won any major tournament but has made his presence felt. In 2022, he clawed his way back into the top 50 rankings for the first time since 2018. In 2023, he didn't have much success but displayed his grit, determination and&nbsp;demonstrated his enduring fighting spirit by being engaged in some lengthy and thrilling games. While he has already hinted at 2024 to be his final year, the veteran will be eager to move past his recent failures and stage a strong comeback sooner than later in the calendar year.

Andy Murray is not having the best of runs at present. Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, lost in the opening round of his 2023 season-opening tournament in Brisbane to Grigor Dimitrov and went down to 32nd seed Martin Tomas Etcheverry in the first round of the Australian Open early this month.

On Tuesday (Jan 31), he suffered a third-round exit at Open Sud de France in Montpellier. Thus, talks of his retirement have been doing the rounds. After his recent loss, a newspaper coloumn wrote on Murray's decision to continue playing despite lack of consistency. Murray, on Tuesday (Jan 30), responded to the newspaper coloumn with a hard-hitting post. He wrote, "Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour. I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently. I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of." Moreover, American veteran Andy Roddick joined in and backed Murray as well. Roddick, former US Open champion, wrote on X, "Preach! Imagine telling an accomplished iconic adult your opinion on what they should choose for work and when they should do it. Defending champion Novak Djokovic crashed out of Australian Open 2024 after a loss to Italy's Jannik Sinner in the semi-final of men's singles on Friday (Jan 26) in Melbourne. Sinner beat Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 to enter the final. With the loss, Djokovic's 23-win streak at the Melbourne Park also came to an end. For fourth seed Sinner, this is the first grand slam final he'll be playing in.&nbsp;

The difference was visible between the players as Sinner came out all guns blazing having not lost a single set in the tournament so far. The Italian won two sets in no time before the Serb could even get settled. The third set was also fought tooth and nail and it went into the tie break.&nbsp;

Sinner, although, lost the set, his first in the Australian Open, remained unfazed to brush it aside quickly to win the next one and with that the match as well.

Djokovic, who was chasing his 11th Australia Open title and a historic 25th grand slam title, was never in contention as visible in scoring. The Serb could not win a single break point against his opponent's five. Djokovic also managed just 67 per cent win on the first serve and 52 on the second while Sinner won 83 per cent on the first serve and 64 per cent on the second.&nbsp;

Sinner also won a whopping 128 points in 24 games against the 10-time Australian Open winner's 98 in 13. The Italian was brutal on the service, winning 82 points while Djokovic managed just 70.

"It was a very, tough match," said Sinner after the match. "I started off really well. He missed in the first two sets. I felt like he was not feeling that great on court so I just tried to keep pushing."

Sinner will play the winner of Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev clash in the men's singles final on January 28.

"It's always a great fight (against Gauff). She's a great player and I enjoy playing her," she added. "I really hope that in the future we are going to play many more finals," she added.&nbsp;

Gauff was clearly off colours on Thursday as she made eight double faults against Sabalenka's two. The American teen prodigy also managed only 57 percent first serve against her opponent's 76 percent. Although, the win percent on the first serve was almost equal for both players, 65 percent for Gauff and 71 for Sabalenka.

Rohan Bopanna says he is extremely proud after achieving the World No. 1 ranking in Men's Doubles. Bopanna is the oldest man to become World No. 1 in Tennis and could also have a 'double' celebration on Saturday after reaching the Australian Open Men's Doubles final alongside Matthew Ebden. Dayana Yastremska beat Czech Linda Noskova 6-3 6-4 on Wednesday to book a semi-final spot at the Australian Open, becoming the first women's qualifier to reach the last four in Melbourne since the 1978 tournament. Battling in 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) heat, the Ukrainian's powerful forehand eventually overcame the 19-year-old Czech, who was the youngest player left in the draw.

Yastremska, 23, follows in the footsteps of Christine Dorey, the last qualifier to reach the Melbourne Park semis 45 years ago. "I think it's nice to make history because at that time I wasn't born," Yastremska said on court after the match. "It's next generation making history and I'm so happy, and tired."

The players traded breaks early in the first set, but it was Yastremska who took the lead in the eighth game when Noskova netted a backhand. Despite failing to get nearly half her first serves in, the Ukrainian kept the pressure on with a string of forehand winners throughout the match.

Noskova failed to capitalise on a break point when she was down 5-3 and Yastremska wrapped up the first set in 36 minutes with another well-targeted forehand. Both players went off court after the first set, escaping the heat, and Noskova had a long chat with her coach on her return.

The players were on level pegging throughout the second set until the seventh game when Yastremska locked it up on her third break point with a backhand winner that left Noskova stranded on the far side of the court. She closed out the match on serve when Noskova's backhand return hit the net, ending the Czech's bid for her first tour singles title and becoming the first qualifier to reach this stage of a Grand Slam since Emma Raducanu won the U.S. Open in 2021.

"I don't really feel like I'm playing good, I just try to play like I can because I'm really tired," Yastremska said. Australian showman Nick Kyrgios conceded Wednesday his tennis career could be over, but said: "I'm OK with that". The talented but temperamental 28-year-old had knee surgery a year ago, then aborted plans to return at Wimbledon after tearing a ligament in his wrist.

He withdrew ahead of the Australian Open as he continues to struggle for fitness, but is at the Grand Slam in Melbourne as a commentator. He conducted the on-court interview after defending champion Novak Djokovic beat Taylor Fritz to reach the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Kyrgios said a career in the media was looking increasingly attractive. "I sat down with my agent, Stuart Duguid, a couple of days ago to talk about my future," he wrote in a column for The Age newspaper in Melbourne.&nbsp; "The reality is, there is a part of me that knows my time in the sport may be over. And I'm OK with that. "It's a conversation that needed to be had. I'm at a crossroads in my career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me. "I could travel the world making really good money commentating on the sport... that's a life people wish they had."

US Open champion Coco Gauff overcame huge resistance from the unseeded Marta Kostyuk Tuesday to move into her first Australian Open semi-final. The American fourth seed wore down the Ukrainian in hot conditions on Rod Laver Arena to clinch a scrappy encounter 7-6 (8/6), 6-7 (3/7), 6-2 in three hours and eight minutes.

She will face either defending champion and second seed Aryna Sabalenka or ninth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova&nbsp;on Thursday for a place in the final. After showing ominous form to race into the last eight, it was a far from convincing display by the 19-year-old, who struggled on serve and fluffed countless opportunities.&nbsp;

"Happy, really proud of the fight I showed today," said Gauff, who had never progressed beyond the fourth round at Melbourne Park in four previous attempts. "Marta is a tough opponent... I really fought and left it all on the court today."

The low standard came from both players, with an incredible 16 service breaks throughout the match and the pair racking up 107 unforced errors between them. Kostyuk will rue missing her chances, letting slip a 5-1 lead and squandering set points in the first set.&nbsp;

The American also faltered at crunch moments, broken when serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set before keeping her cool as Kostyuk became more agitated in the deciding set.&nbsp;

"I was just trying to get one more game in the first set and at least make it competitive and then one game turned to another and I was able to win that set," she said. "In the second, I gave myself opportunities but became a little bit passive and when I came out in the third I was just trying to play aggressive and hit through the court."

The win extended Gauff's unbeaten streak this year to 10 matches after she won at Auckland in the lead up. She is into the semi-finals without facing a seed after a string of top names crashed out of the tournament early.

She is into the semi-finals without facing a seed after a string of top names crashed out of the tournament early.

Australian Open: Carlos Alcaraz ready for 'tough battle' against Alexander Zverev in quarterfinal

Qualifier Dayana Yastremska continued her fairytale run into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday with a 7-6(6) 6-4 upset of twice former champion and 18th seed Victoria Azarenka. The Ukrainian world number 93, who stunned Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round, had to fight hard but was rewarded for her aggression with 38 winners to forge on into a half of the draw devoid of top 10 seeds.

"I feel like my heart is going to jump out of my body," the 23-year-old said after the biggest win of her career. "I was losing the tiebreak, I was losing the second set, I was always felt like I was running behind the train. But I think I'm a little bit of a fighter so that's why I won this match."

In a punishing baseline battle with virtually no net play, Yastremska got the first of the six breaks of serve in the opening set only for Azarenka to rattle off the next four games to edge in front. Azarenka, back-to-back champion in 2012-2013 and a Melbourne semi-finalist last year, served for the set but Yastremska kept up the pressure through five deuces and finally converted her fourth break point to force a tiebreak.

The tiebreak was just as tight but the Ukrainian sealed it with her 21st winner, a blistering forehand that was just too fast and too deep for 34-year-old Azarenka. Both players took lengthy bathroom breaks after the first set and Belarusian Azarenka came out firing, racing to a 3-0 lead almost before Yastremska had time to catch her breath.

The Ukrainian stalled Azarenka's progress and then went back on the attack, finding her rasping winners again to win five straight games. She held her nerve serving for the match two games later, lashing across one more big backhand to set up a meeting with Czech world number 50 Linda Noskova in her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Talking about Noskova, 19, she barely broke a sweat to progress after former world number three Svitolina was unable to complete her match on Margaret Court Arena. The 19th seed needed a medical timeout at 2-0 down in the first set, during which she received treatment for her lower back, and she pulled out after being broken for the second time on her return.
