Following their departure from Afghanistan, many Afghans now find themselves in foreign nations with no clear idea of where they will be able to fully settle.

More than 60,000 Afghans were evacuated by the US, in addition to US nationals, permanent residents, and citizens of friendly countries.

These Afghans seeking resettlement in the United States are stranded on military bases across the country and abroad, weeks after their dramatic escape from Kabul, as medical and security screenings stall the process.

The delays have been exacerbated by a modest but serious measles outbreak, with federal officials scrambling to control cases and inoculate new arrivals against the disease and other illnesses like the coronavirus.

According to a report by The New York Times, approximately 64,000 Afghan evacuees had landed in the United States as of September 14.After the United States withdrew from Afghanistan last month, the vast majority of Afghans were put in jeopardy under Taliban administration.

According to an official federal document obtained by The New York Times, nearly 49,000 people are staying on eight domestic military sites, waiting to be relocated in the United States.

Approximately 18,000 people are stationed at sites around the world, the majority of which are in Germany. Some people leave after a few weeks, but the majority stay for months.

The inspections, which involve a number of government agencies, come after a rushed and frantic evacuation last month, just before the US finished its pullout from Afghanistan.

About 100 Americans who wish to escape the nation, as well as an unknown number of Afghans who are in danger, remain in the country.

Meanwhile, after detecting a few instances of measles among fresh arrivals in the United States, the United States suspended Afghan evacuee flights to the United States on Friday, removing some off the planes.

In the write-up about Baradar, Time said he is “revered among the Taliban as a founding member of the movement in 1994, a charismatic military leader and a deeply pious figure.”

“When the Taliban swept to victory in August in Afghanistan, it was on the terms Baradar negotiated. He was said to be making all the major decisions, including the amnesty offered to members of the former regime, the lack of bloodshed when the Taliban entered Kabul and the regime’s contacts and visits with neighboring states, especially China and Pakistan,” it wrote.

Describing him as a “quiet, secretive man who rarely gives public statements or interviews,” it said, "Baradar nonetheless represents a more moderate current within the Taliban, the one that will be thrust into the limelight to win Western support and desperately needed financial aid."

“The question is whether the man who coaxed the Americans out of Afghanistan can sway his own movement.”

Interestingly, the magazine’s listing came amid speculations about his whereabouts after reports that he was injured, or dead, after clashes at the Afghan presidential palace with the Haqqani network. Baradar himself came out with audio and video messages to dismiss the rumours.

It was reported that he was unhappy with being named the deputy prime minister instead of prime minister. CIA's Deputy Director David Cohen has said that Al-Qaeda could in fact be regrouping in Afghanistan. Watch this report to know more.

Early signs of Al-Qaeda regrouping in Afghanistan, notes CIA

United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Deputy Director David Cohen said on Wednesday (local time) that there were early signs of Al Qaeda regrouping in Taliban ruled Afghanistan, says a report by intelnews.org

However, he added that CIA was already working to develop "methods to work within the horizon". Cohen reportedly referred to current intelligence reports of the CIA. He was speaking at Intelligence and National Security Summit in Washington DC. During his address, he reportedly acknowledged that shuttering of the United States embassy in Kabul, as well as the closure of a network of CIA stations across Afghanistan, had "diminished" the ability of American intelligence agencies to assess conditions on the ground

Cohen added that much of the intelligence that has been collected in recent weeks comes from "over-the-horizon platforms", meaning that the collection is taking place from countries that border Afghanistan.

At the moment, the United States intelligence community estimates that it could take Al Qaeda between one and two years to amass its former strike capability, so as to directly threaten American interests, reported Intelnews.org.The presence of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan was the primary reason behind the invasion of the country by the United States in 2001.

However, with the Taliban back in power in Afghanistan, there are concerns that Al Qaeda may make a comeback in the war-torn country.

Under the leadership of Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda worked closely with the upper echelons of the Taliban in the 1990s and early 2000s. Contacts between the two groups continue to exist, and could potentially deepen following the exit of the United States and its Western allies from Afghanistan, reported Intelnews.org.

CIA says Al Qaeda is regrouping post Taliban takeover in Afghanistan: Report

Officials claimed Wednesday that members of Afghanistan's national junior girls' football team have escaped across the border into Pakistan.

This comes a month after the hardline Taliban surged back into power, trapping members of the Afghan Girls National Youth Football Team in dread of their lives.

According to a campaigner, the girls who participated in the under-14, under-16, and under-18 teams crossed the northern land border wearing burqas before changing into headscarves.

On Tuesday, a total of over 75 people crossed the northern border before heading south to Lahore, where they were greeted with flower garlands.

"I received a request for their rescue from another England-based NGO, so I wrote to Prime Minister Imran Khan who issued clearance for them to land in Pakistan," said Sardar Naveed Haider, an ambassador of global development NGO Football for Peace, based in London.

The female team members crossed the land border wearing burqas before changing into headscarves, according to Haider.

Afghanistan's new authorities have hinted that women and girls will be restricted from participating in sports, as they were during their previous regime in the 1990s.

Women are "not required" to play, according to a top Taliban official who spoke to Australian media.

But on Tuesday, Bashir Ahmad Rustamzai, Afghanistan's new director-general for sports, said top-level Taliban leaders were still deciding.

Pakistan's federal minister for information Fawad Chaudhry welcomed the women players in a tweet early Wednesday morning.

Since the Taliban took power, tens of thousands of Afghans have fled the country, fearing retaliation or harassment.

Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesman, said on Tuesday that India's concerns over China's Belt and Road Initiative supporting Afghanistan are "inappropriate," according to The Global Times.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, 139 countries had signed agreements with China as of March, with China assisting these countries in the construction of roads and ports as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Some of India's concerns aren't appropriate and neither are they plausible, said Taliban Spokesperson Suhail Shaheen, in an interview with Chinese mouthpiece Global Times.

"While having ended the occupation, we need to focus on the reconstruction of Afghanistan. And now China has come forward to help us with the construction of Afghanistan to create jobs for our people. So what is wrong with that?" asked Shaheen.

"China can also take part in the construction of Afghanistan and assist in other essential sectors. After this, both countries can then enter into mutually beneficial bilateral agreements which best serve the interests of both countries through mutual respect."

With the evacuation of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan now complete, the Taliban leadership is looking to China for massive investments in the volatile country over the next six months.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid previously stated that the group "desires" to be a part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

According to Nikkei Asia, China has been courting the Taliban for future projects in Afghanistan since 2018.

The new Taliban governor of Helmand, a province in the south of Afghanistan, has urged western countries to come back to the country but with money instead of guns.

Fear of evictions of fuel wide scale protests in Kandahar

Filmmaker Sahraa Karimi, who fled Afghanistan last month after Kabul fell to the Taliban, still hopes to go back home one day.

Karimi, the first woman to Afghan Film, the country's national cinema body, spoke to the press virtually on the sidelines of the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival(TIFF) and said she is trying to start a new life, a new journey but is very sad, of course. The director added that anytime she is alone, she thinks immediately to go to Kabul.

Karimi revealed, she fled her country and landed in Kiev, Ukraine with help from the Slovak Film and Television Academy.

Since then Karimi has been conducting interviews and participating in major industry events like the Venice Film Festival and TIFF to share her experiences as a refugee and get support for Afghan cinema and its filmmakers.

Karimi also stated that she was trying to get answers from the now Taliban-controlled Afghan government as to whether or not she still holds her post in Afghan Film but has yet to receive an answer.

"This is the reality. They don`t tell me that I am not the general director of Afghan Film but they don`t tell me anything else," Karimi said. The filmmaker expressed that she wished to go back to her country if she was allowed to continue her work but was doubtful if she, as a woman, would be allowed to do so.

Before Taliban took over Afghanistan, Karimi revealed she was trying to plan a national film festival in the country and trying to open more movie theatres across Afghanistan.

On August 15 after the Taliban entered the city, Karimi said she headed to the airport with her family and two assistants from Afghan film and by August 17, they were on a Turkish flight to Ukraine.

"It was like a film," she said of the experience trying to get onto an aeroplane, likening the experience of the Korean film `Train to Busan`.

"It was like zombies are coming to attack you and you are running."

Karimi plans to turn her experience fleeing Afghanistan into a feature titled `Flight from Kabul`, hoping to finish a first draft of the screenplay later this month, and is soon set to teach at Italy`s National Film School in Rome.

Karimi also blamed the Afghan government for not providing enough support to the arts, pointing out how cinema was an agent of change.

"One of the biggest mistakes this past 20 years of the government of Afghanistan is that they didn`t support art and culture and cinema. They didn`t even build one cinema in Afghanistan." said the filmmaker, noting that there were no film funds or attempts to build out infrastructure for productions.

"It was like zombies are coming to attack you and you are running." Karimi plans to turn her experience fleeing Afghanistan into a feature titled `Flight from Kabul`, hoping to finish a first draft of the screenplay later this month, and is soon set to teach at Italy`s National Film School in Rome. The European Union has no other option but to engage with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan if it wants to influence events in the country, said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Tuesday.

However, Borrell underlined at a European Parliament plenary session debate in the French city of Strasbourg that engagement does not mean recognition, Xinhua reported.

Describing the summer's events in Afghanistan as "a tragedy," he insisted that engagement is a priority for the EU to continue protecting as many people as possible.

"To have any chance of influencing events, we have no other option but to engage with the Taliban. Engagement does not mean recognition. No, engaging means talking, discussing, and agreeing — when possible," he said.

Regarding the situation on the ground in Afghanistan, Borrell said it was "dramatic", adding the European Commission has quadrupled its aid from 50 to 200 million euros.

Recently, the European Union said that it will continue to coordinate with the UN and its agencies on the stabilisation of Afghanistan, ensure that humanitarian aid reaches vulnerable populations and for this purpose, will also step up financial support.

According to local media, 153 media outlets in 20 provinces have ceased operations after the fall of the Republic of Afghanistan, citing organisations defending free media in the turbulent country.

These sources include radio, print, and television channels, according to executives at the organisations, and both fiscal concerns and constraints are apparently the main reasons for their inability to operate any longer, according to Tolo News on Tuesday.

More outlets are expected to discontinue operations in the country if the media's financial problem is not resolved and restrictions against them are not addressed, according to officials.

"If the organisations supporting media do not pay attention to media outlets, soon we will witness the closing of the remaining outlets in the country," Tolo News quoted Hujatullah Mujadadi, the deputy head of the Afghanistan Federation of Journalists, as saying.

"The continuation of this trend has created concerns. We urge international organisations to take immediate action to address this problem. Otherwise, it will be the end of press freedom and other human and civil liberties, " Tolo News quoted Masroor Lutfi, representative of the Afghanistan National Journalists' Union, as saying.

According to the organisations that support free media in Afghanistan, the country's economic issues are considerable, and functioning under constraints poses significant hurdles for the media.

The Taliban, on the other hand, has stated that they will work to establish a safe atmosphere for journalists and media to continue their work.

Following their coverage of continuing protests in Kabul, the Taliban detained Taqi Daryabi and Nematullah Naqdi, a video editor and a video reporter with the daily newspaper Etilaatroz, last week.

According to The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the two journalists were transported to a local police station, where they were segregated into two rooms, insulted, and flogged with cables.

"Taqi Daryabi`s lower back, upper legs, and face, and Naqdi`s left arm, upper back, upper legs, and face were marked by red lesions after the beatings, as seen in photos posted to Twitter by Etilaatroz and Zaki Daryabi and on the Los Angeles Times` website. Daryabi appeared to be unable to walk unaided, according to a video posted on Twitter by Zaki Daryabi," ICJ said.
