Afghanistan's state news agency reported on Monday that a 5.3-magnitude earthquake killed eight people and injured nine others.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that quake was felt in the provinces of Kunar, Laghman and Nangarhar, and in the capital Kabul.

Highlighting that casualties could rise, Mawlavi Najibullah Hanif, the spokesman for the provincial governor, told the Bakhtar News Agency "Sunday night's earthquake has caused financial and human losses in Kunar province."

After a powerful quake killed more than 1,000 people three months ago in Afghanistan, the country was still recovering.

Afghanistan: 5.3-magnitude earthquake kills eight people and injures nine others

At a press conference, Abdul Karim Haider, the deputy minister of justice, said that Afghanistan does not need a constitution and can address problems by just applying Islamic laws.

Haider said that the Hanafi law serves as the framework for resolving all problems. "The holy Quran, the Sunnah of Mohammad (PBUH), and the jurisprudence of every Islamic country are the basis and the text of the constitution in general and in detail," he was quoted as saying by TOLOnews.

However, he said that they are ready to prepare the constitution in accordance with laws once they get directions.

Haider stated, "We are awaiting Amirul Muminin's direction (for creation of law). The Hanafi law system, the Quran, and the Sunnah of Mohammad (PBUH) are its sources. Thus we are confident that a comprehensive law will be established quickly to address everyone's concerns."

It has been more than a year since the Taliban seized power in the South Asian country and implemented significant legal changes.

This includes violations of human rights, especially for women. As per a report released by UNAMA, since the group takeover, women’s rights in the country have deteriorated.

Prior to the takeover, women, and girls enjoyed the freedom to engage in all elements of public and daily life, including schooling and other activities.

Former Taliban Ministry of Interior spokesperson Saeed Khosty has reportedly forcefully divorced his wife, the daughter of one of the former National Security Generals, for her lack of religion.

Khosty's wife, Elaha, 24, is a student of medicine at Kabul Medical University. She claims in the videotapes she made public that Saeed Khosty forced her into marriage before sexually assaulting her at the Taliban intelligence headquarters.

In one of the social media videos, she claimed that this Taliban official tormented her at night and left bruises all over her body.

After being arrested for having pictures of national security forces on her phone, Elaha was imprisoned by Taliban intelligence. While in custody, she was regularly humiliated and allegedly raped by Saeed Khosty while being videotaped.

The Taliban official and several armed Taliban members then pay her family a visit and frighten them by asking them not to question their marriage.

Elaha was forced to wed Khosty against her will and is now being held at the Gulbahar Center in Kabul. Despite her repeated attempts to flee, the Taliban always manage to apprehend her and return her, just like they did the last time they brought her back across the Torkham border.

She claims that after getting a smartphone, she had no choice but to record a video of herself, which she immediately uploaded on social media and submitted to the media.

Elaha is seen pleading in the video. She runs the risk of meeting Khosty's wrath by sharing the video. "It is better to die once than to die often," she adds.

It has been more than a year since Afghanistan was under the control of the Taliban. The UN aid chief on Monday (August 30) said that countries should now resume sending development assistance aid to the people who are starving.

The economic and political situation in the South Asian country is deteriorating every day. The population is increasing, poverty is getting worse, and the authorities don’t have the funds to cope with it. Afghanistan's development has slowed, particularly since the Taliban took control.

According to the UN aid chief, six million people in the country are at risk of starvation, and half of them require humanitarian assistance. He further stated that without proper care, more than a million children are predicted to be suffering from malnutrition.

The UN and other charity organisations have struggled to get enough money into the country over the past year as international banks are wary of breaking sanctions.

Martin Griffiths, UN chief aid said, "Humanitarians have brought in over $1 billion in cash to sustain programme delivery, but the liquidity and banking crisis continues to impact delivery of assistance and on the daily lives of Afghans," Reuters reported.

Foreign nations have also frozen billions of dollars, mostly by the US, to stop the Taliban from accessing them.

Jumping to its own defence, Pakistan denied claims that the US used its airspace to kill al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.

It comes after Afghanistan’s acting defence minister Mullah Yaqoub accused Pakistan of helping the US kill Zawahiri.

Pakistan's foreign office said in a statement, “In the absence of any evidence, as acknowledged by the Afghan minister himself, such conjectural allegations are highly regrettable and defy the norms of responsible diplomatic conduct.”

During a press conference along with the Chief of Staff of the Taliban’s military forces, Yaqoub said the use of Pakistan airspace in July to kill the former al-Qaeda leader was a transgression of the country’s borders.

Zawahiri was killed in a drone strike on July 31 by the Central Intelligence Agency of the US which ensured minimal collateral damage to the surrounding people and areas.

It has been a year since the US forces haphazardly left their posts in Afghanistan, leaving the land in the hands of Talibani barbarians and terrorists. During the muddled exit, US troops, its allies and numerous other dependents were left in the lurch, fighting Talibanis. Now, a documentary has revealed that during the exit, a US Army colonel blocked the exit of several allies, effectively pushing them into the killing zones. IN PICS | What life in Afghanistan looks like after one year of Taliban rule? Reportedly, in a new documentary titled, “Send Me” directed by Nick Palmisciano, the members of a special operations volunteer team have revealed that an unnamed Colonel 'murdered' the passengers of five buses by not allowing them to board the planes that could have allowed them to leave Kabul. “There was a colonel who came out and wanted to show that essentially he was the one that could decide whether or not somebody could get on a plane or not," stated a witness, whose identity was concealed in the documentary. Meanwhile, MMA fighter turned-solider Tim Kennedy, who was part of the 13-member group tasked with the job of saving as many allies as possible added: "The colonel made the call to ‘put everybody back out'. I don’t care who they are, they get back on those buses and those buses go back into Kabul." Read more: Taliban restricts female students from leaving Kabul for studies: Report It is pertinent to note that passengers of the five buses had verified documents. They were carefully searched and vetted by the Marines and arrived at the US-controlled Black Gate on the fateful day of August 25, 2021 around 3 AM. However, the top-ranking Colonel from the 82nd Airborne division would not let them or the buses ferrying them get inside. The Colonel did not even allow the refugees that carried a US passport, stating the documents might have been forged. As a last-ditch attempt to save the lives of refugees on the buses, a call was made to North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. The Republican leader further egged the army generals to intervene. However, by then, the situation outside the airport had turned dire and effectively the fate of the refugees was sealed. The documentary is streaming on Amazon Prime and in select theatres. Taliban restricts female students from leaving Kabul for studies: Report

It's been over a year since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. During their takeover, the Taliban regime promised that they will be taking a more liberal approach towards women's rights but recent reports show that not much has changed in the current regime rather the government is only backtracked on all of its promises and left Afghan women and girls in despair.

Heavy drone activities in some parts of Afghanistan have been reported in the past few days. As per reports, the increased drone activity suggests that the United States is stepping up efforts to target Al-Qaeda or ISIS-K. However, there's no official confirmation whether or not the US is striking (or planning to strike) any terror outfit.

Locals in Helmand and Kandahar provinces of Afghanistan have reported heavy drone activities in the last few days, a prominent Afghan journo and war observer Bilal Sarwary wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday (August 25) based on sources.

Sarwary said, "A drone strike targeted camp bastion in Helmand around 5AM. AQIS and AQ members Abu Zubair, Abu Anas, Farooqi Qari Sulaiman and Abu Al Hassan have been present in various parts of Helmand province, including inside camp bastion." He mentioned that two sources, including a CT source, told him.

Some other observers, with expertise in the matter related to Afghanistan and Taliban, have also noticed increased drone activity lately which appears to be by the Western coalition.

This development comes after US President Joe Biden said on August 1 that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a drone strike in Kabul. The alleged killing of al-Zawahiri was touted to be the biggest blow to the militant group since its founder Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011.

Despite Biden's claims, there are several claims and counterclaims over the entire operation. On Thursday (August 25), the Taliban announced that they had not located Zawahiri's body and that they were still conducting investigations.

On the other hand, a White House spokesman had said after the strike that the US has no DNA confirmation of the death of Zawahiri. The spokesman had stated that his identity was verified through other sources.

'Violation of the Doha agreement'

When Pentagon said it killed Zawahiri, the authorities also mentioned that his presence in Afghanistan was a clear violation of the Doha agreement signed in 2020, which chalked out the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan a year ago.

But the Taliban had said that the US had breached the accord. "The fact that America invaded our territory and violated all international principles, we strongly condemn the action once again. 'Violation of the Doha agreement' When Pentagon said it killed Zawahiri, the authorities also mentioned that his presence in Afghanistan was a clear violation of the Doha agreement signed in 2020, which chalked out the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan a year ago. But the Taliban had said that the US had breached the accord. "The fact that America invaded our territory and violated all international principles, we strongly condemn the action once again. Reports of heavy drone activity in parts of Afghanistan. What does it signify?

After the US claimed the al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in an airstrike in Kabul last month, the Taliban announced on Thursday that they had not located his body and that they were still conducting investigations.

According to US sources, Zawahiri was taken down by a missile fired from a drone in July. This was the largest blow to al Qaeda since US Navy SEALS assassinated Osama bin Laden more than ten years ago.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Al Qaeda, was targeted and killed in a drone strike in Kabul on July 31. On the other hand, the US security services are portraying this as a significant victory.

Al-Zawahiri, 71, and bin Laden were indicted by the US Justice Department as conspirators in the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.

The declaration that Osama bin Laden's life had ended in 2011 received an overwhelmingly positive domestic reaction and helped President Barack Obama gain re-election the following year.

On the other hand, the reaction to the announcement of the death of al-Zawahiri was comparatively subdued.

The US security establishment no longer viewed Al Qaeda as the most significant terrorist danger. The organisation has been replaced as a much more severe threat to the world by the Islamic State (IS).

Who was Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Al Qaeda?

After Osama bin Laden's murder, Zawahiri, an Egyptian who had served as both his personal physician and a close friend, was 71 years old and had become a prominent international icon of the terrorist organization. He was descended from a prominent Egyptian family.

Rabia'a al-Zawahiri, his grandfather, was an imam at Cairo's al-Azhar University. Abdel Rahman Azzam, his great-uncle, served as the Arab League's first secretary.

He was an intellectually talented young man who was influenced early in life by Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian author and philosopher who is credited with being one of the pioneers of 20th-century Islamist extremism, as well as by one of his uncles, Mahfouz Azzam, a critic of Egypt's secularist government.

According to his biographer, Muntassir al-Zayat, by reading the writings of the radical Egyptian intellectual Sayyid Qutb, who had called for the complete reform of Muslim polities on the basis of pure Islamic norms, values, and practices, al-Zawahiri may have found comfort and an understanding of the catastrophe Islam faced as a result of the trauma of the Arab defeat in the 1967 war.

The talks of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) aka the ‘Pakistani Taliban’ with the Pakistani government have come to a halt. The collapse in talks is expected to come as a blow to the Pakistan government which is trying to keep the homegrown monster in check. Reportedly, during the talks, TTP refused to budge on its demand for the reversal of the merger of Federally Administered Tribal Areas with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is pertinent to note that both the areas were merged four years back by bringing a constitutional amendment. Since then, the terrorist outfit has been demanding that the government return to the status quo. As reported by WION, TTP has fashioned itself on the lines of the Afghan Taliban but is essentially anti-Pakistan in its stance. The outfit has repeatedly refused to acknowledge the Durand Line as well. Read more: Pakistan government and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan agree on indefinite ceasefire Taliban, which the Pakistani government supports in one way or another, has been secretly supporting TTP terrorists as well. Experts are of the view that by allowing the Taliban and TTP to grow, Pakistan is effectively setting itself up for the same fate as Afghanistan. According to Pakistan’s interior ministry, 434 terrorist attacks have taken place in the previous six months. The attacks come against the backdrop of the Pakistan government being engaged in peace talks with TTP. A UN report released in May, earlier this year also claimed that the TTP was the terrorist group that benefitted most from the Afghan Taliban’s ascent to power. According to the report, TTP had a strength of about 3,000 to 4,000 fighters in the neighbouring country. Pak government's talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan come to a halt

After attracting widespread criticism and concerns raised by Afghan women over the new rule to limit the entry of women in parks, the Taliban on Monday clarified that the imposition of the new rule to separate the visiting days for men and women is to allow women to visit the parks freely.

Taliban's Ministry of Vice and Virtue spokesman, Mohammad Akif Mahajar at a press conference, said that at the public parks the visiting days for men and women have been separated in order for women to visit the parks freely, TOLO News reported.

According to local media, the Taliban recently imposed new restrictions on Afghan women and girls in Herat province. They are not allowed to move freely in public parks; including those specially designated for women; but only on specified days, and family sections in restaurants are closed down by law; however, most citizens didn`t heed that restriction.

A 22-year-old girl, Rehana Ahmadian said that they used to go to the park to take a stroll as her mother had high blood cholesterol based on a doctor`s advice but ever since the Taliban came to power, they warned us not to leave homes without a male guardian; we lost all independence compared to the former government despite women`s parks are separate from men`s.

"Taliban have nothing else to do but suppress women since coming into power, and they have imprisoned us all women at home,"Asila Misbah, a women`s rights activist based in Herat said.

"I used to eat food in restaurants with my family most of the time, but now due to Taliban restrictions on women, I can`t spend an hour with my family outside. Everything we do is in an uncertain manner and we fear retribution even though we tread carefully," she added.

Similarly, in Zabul province, the Taliban have recently threatened men not to allow women to attend wedding ceremonies.

The erosion of women`s rights has been one of the most notable aspects of the de facto administration to date. Before the Taliban came to power, women and girls had progressively had their rights to fully participate in education, the workplace, and other aspects of public and daily life.

It has been a year since the Taliban deprived Afghan women of education, work, and public life. This is while former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, recently claimed that Afghan girls were prohibited from school by order of Pakistan.

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has drawn heavy criticism across the world for a decree banning girls from school above grade sixth. It has been over 300 days since girls` schools have been closed, Kabul`s officials have said that it depends upon the order of the leader of the Taliban.

A decision taken by the Taliban prevented girls from returning to secondary school which meant that a generation of girls will not complete their full 12 years of basic education. At the same time, access to justice for victims of gender-based violence has been limited by the dissolution of dedicated reporting pathways, justice mechanisms and shelters.

Taliban official has said that the schools for female students are closed for religious issues and that there is a need for agreement of Islamic scholars on this matter and that opposing the decision of the Islamic clerics regarding the schools will have negative consequences.

Since the ban, they have continued their rhetoric that they will announce a new mechanism for the return of girls to secondary schools however no development in this aspect has taken place.

Meanwhile, girls who have been prevented from going to school for more than eleven months are asking the Taliban to reopen schools for them, reported Tolo News.

Ever since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, the country has been dealing with all sorts of crises and crimes. To prove it, the recent killing of an elderly taxi driver says it all.

According to Khaama Press, a 64-year-old man was kidnapped by armed robbers while operating his taxi. Later, the driver was killed, and his body was found the next morning in Mazar-e-Sharif’s police district.

The probe is underway, and no one has been detained as of now, as per the Taliban security personnel.

Afghanistan: Crime rate rises after Taliban seized power; millions on the verge of hunger

A starkly divided United Nations ended the travel ban exemptions for 13 Taliban officials after failing to reach to an agreement on a possible extension. The exemptions were set to expire at midnight on Friday.

No consensus on Taliban officials' travel ban waiver; Akhundzada reaches out to int'l community

The travel ban exemptions for 13 Taliban officials ended on Friday after the United Nations failed to achieve consensus on possible extension. Thirteen Taliban officials were given exemptions from travel ban to enable them to take part in negotiations and meet foreign officials abroad. These 13 officials were among 135 Taliban officials who were subject to sanctions as per a 2011 UN Security resolution.

In June, the 15-member UN Security Council's Afghanistan Sanctions Committee removed two Taliban education ministers from the exemption list over the regime's curtailment of women's rights.

At that time exemptions for others were renewed until August 19. An extension of a month was possible if no member objected but AFP, quoting diplomatic sources, said that Ireland objected last week.

China and Russia were in favour of an extension.
