Zoom competes with Microsoft's Teams, Cisco's Webex and Google's Hangouts. Taiwan's cabinet said domestically-made conferencing apps were preferred, but if needed products from Google and Microsoft could also be considered. Zoom's shares dipped 1% in premarket trading on the Nasdaq.

Meanwhile, as the pressure continued to mount, WHO also released a statement where it emphasized that it is working with all health authorities including "health experts from Taiwan".

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus topped, 800,000 on Tuesday and amidst this, WHO is taking a huge risk by keeping Taiwan out.

Taiwan accuses World Health Organisation of burying information regarding coronavirus

United States President Donald Trump recently signed the TAIPEI Act, supporting Taiwan’s aspiration to expand relationships with other countries in the world.

Recently, a lot of countries have severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan in a bid to side with China, which perceives Taiwan as Chinese territory.

The Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act was passed in the House of Representatives on March 4. It was earlier approved in the US Senate.

The act explicitly calls out China for its excesses in the region, by referring to coercion of Taiwan as a “bullying tactic”. It was penned by Cory Gardner, a Republican senator from Colorado, and a Democrat senator Chris Coons from Delaware.

The act asks for US to support Taiwan in improving relationships with other countries to counter the mounting sense of pressure created by China over Taiwan, the South China Morning Post reported.

“The United States should use every tool to support Taiwan’s standing on the international stage,” Gardner had asserted in a joint announcement.&nbsp;

The bill requires the United States to gradually decrease all kinds of engagement with countries that attempt to undermine Taiwan.

China immediately lashed out at the bill, calling it an interference in their internal matters. Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian calls the TAIPEI Act a “severe violation of the one-China principle”.

As of now, Taiwan has diplomatic relations with 15 nations. On China’s behest, eight countries recently severed ties with Taiwan, especially in view of the new president Tsai Ing, who wants democracy in the region.

In January, Tsai won the election by a landslide and asserted Taiwan’s independence in the face of China.

This could further escalate tensions because China views any passage through the Taiwan Strait as a breach of its sovereignty.

The United States, like most countries, has no official relations with Taiwan, but is the island’s most important international supporter and main source of arms.

It's hard to say how China will respond, but nations must remember that the world can do without a military escalation in the middle of a pandemic.

US warship sails through Taiwan Strait amid spat with China

Anger is rising in Taiwan over China continuing to buzz the island with fighter jets and warships even as they both fight the global coronavirus pandemic.

The self-ruled democratic island has had to scramble its own fighter jets in response to recent Chinese manoeuvres, designed to show that Beijing's military might remains unbowed by the health crisis.

But the tactic is winning few friends among the Taiwanese.

"As the world grapples with the severity of the COVID19 pandemic, China's military manoeuvres around Taiwan have continued unabated," President Tsai Ing-wen said in a tweet late Tuesday accompanied by pictures of her visiting troops.

"Whether it's national defence or preventing the spread of disease, our armed forces remain as vigilant as ever," she added.

Beijing has ramped up drills around the island since Tsai was first elected in 2016 because she refuses to acknowledge its concept that Taiwan is part of "one China."

There has been little let up during the devastating coronavirus outbreak that began in China.

Taipei's defence ministry said four "targeted" drills have been conducted by China near its borders this year, which it said was "concrete evidence of provocations and threats".

Taiwan ran an exercise with its own F16 fighter jets on Tuesday in response.

"China continues the drills to show to the world, as well as to assure its people, that it has maintained military strength and defence abilities in the midst of an epidemic," Lin Ying-yu, a military analyst at National Chung Cheng University, told AFP.

The incursions have sparked anger on Taiwanese social media with some even calling for Chinese jets to be shot down.

"I firmly support to the government to contain the outbreak of the China/Wuhan pneumonia and resist the harassment of the communists' military," read one message left on Tsai's Facebook page.

A Chinese military jet briefly crossed the median line separating the two sides in February, less than a month after Tsai was re-elected in a landslide.
