It’s imperative to note that Hong Kong is the only territory in China which grants democratic freedoms to its people.

The country had closed off its borders in March in order to contain COVID-19 infections.

“On special humanitarian considerations”, Taiwan will now allow Hong Kongers to come to the country. But there’s one condition - everybody will be tested for COVID-19, and if they test negative they shall be given shelter in the country.

Additionally, everyone will undergo a mandatory 14 day period of quarantine, which is true for everyone entering the country. Taiwan is a democracy, unlike the neighbouring China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.

Taiwan has been lauded as one of the earliest success stories of containing COVID-19. In fact, the country never underwent a lockdown, which is not true for the rest of the world, where containing the virus has been very hard.

Taiwan to let Hong Kongers in on 'humanitarian' grounds beginning July 1 - the same day HK was returned to China

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant is expanding investment in India.&nbsp;The company currently has most of its factories in China. As per a 2010 report, Foxconn has 12 factories in nine Chinese cities.

Speaking at the company's annual general meeting, Foxconn's chairman Liu Young-Way described India as a "bright spot" for development.

“We are fully pushing ahead with next steps there, and maybe in a few months' time we can reveal on our website the next steps and report back to everyone. We'll have further investment there”, he said.

The People’s Liberation Army has been conducting drills near Taiwan.&nbsp;Taiwan claims that China's Air Force has buzzed Taiwan at least eight times in the last two weeks.&nbsp;Reports say that China sent fighters and bombers into Taiwan's air defence identification zone.&nbsp;The planes were pushed back by patrolling Taiwanese jets.

Amid the growing military threat, Taiwan is prioritising the development of its defence industry. Just yesterday, President Tsai Ing-wen oversaw the first public test flight of an aircraft “Brave Eagle”, wholly built in Taiwan. An advanced jet trainer, it was built at a cost of a little more than two billion Dollars.

Taiwan is also developing submarines and has asked its military to remain vigilant. However, Taiwan still depends on the United States for support.

Fox News reported today that there are now three American aircraft carriers operating in the Pacific to counter Chinese aggression near Taiwan and in the south China sea.

Support to Hong Kongers

Recently, Taiwan extended support to protesters in Hong Kong. Last week, President Tsai declared that Taiwan will provide humanitarian assistance to Hong Kong.

The morale of the world community is now at a very low level due to the COVID-19 crisis, with no one knowing when it would end, and the consequent shattered economy of most countries in the world. The Chinese government under the dictatorship of Xi Jinping appears to have decided that present is the best time for the Chinese government to achieve its long-cherished ambition of dominating the world in all respects and emerging as the undisputed superpower of the world.

It is very obvious that the Chinese government has concluded, after all, its calculation or miscalculation, that its strategies towards total domination of the world should start now by confronting and weakening India and even humiliating it, if possible. A large populated country like India, if it were to decisively weaken under the pressure of China, then probably the Chinese government thinks that there would not be many insurmountable hurdles to “conquer the world”.

While the 1962 war with China left India humiliated and it is yet to recover from the shock of Chinese deceit, the Chinese government has consistently applied pressure on India in various ways in multiple forums.&nbsp;

With this game plan of weakening India, the Chinese government has directly and indirectly encouraged Pakistan to maintain hate relationship with India and prejudiced leadership of Pakistan has just considered China not wisely as 'all-weather friend'. In this process, today Pakistan has virtually become an extended territory of China and Pakistan government is in no position to refuse any dictates from China. With huge debts and several infrastructure projects under the Chinese companies, China can any time make Pakistan open a bigger military front against India than what it has been doing so far.&nbsp;

The appeasement of China by India started when Jawaharlal Nehru misread the motives and game plan of the then Chinese government. The recent visit of Xi Jinping to India when Prime Minister Modi went out of the way to extend a glamorous welcome to the Chinese President, made many think whether Modi also has misread the game plan of the Chinese government, just as Jawaharlal Nehru did several decades back.

When China occupied Tibet after the massacre of thousands of Tibetan protestors and India simply recognised the Chinese occupation of Tibet, in spite of the fact that Tibet under Chinese control could be a threat for India’s security interests, the world virtually lost faith that India has the will power to confront Chinese government.

Now, the tragic news that at least 20 Indian army men lost their lives in the border clash with the Chinese military, has shocked entire India, with people wondering how Modi would handle the situation. Will he try to buy peace with China in spite of the provocation or gather courage and work out plans to resist the Chinese government.

In any case, it is obvious now that India has no option other than resisting China in every possible way and make it realise that India is not a country that China can take for granted.

The terrorist attacks by militants from Pakistan in Kashmir which has been steadily increasing in recent times, the government of Nepal creating border dispute with India and Chinese military creating border tension, clearly indicate that China has worked out its strategic game plan to encircle India.

In all probability, it is likely that Pakistan will intensify its conflict with India in Kashmir and Nepal government would become more belligerent against India and &nbsp;Chinese military provocation in the border will intensify. Just as China killed Indian military personnel on June 15, the Nepal government too shot down an Indian a few days back at its border with India.

The scheme behind the well-coordinated plan of the Chinese government with support from governments of Pakistan and Nepal is to force India to resist the incursions on the border with China, Nepal and Pakistan using its military force. This will give an opportunity for the Chinese government to send its force to Pakistan and Nepal to “defend their border”. Then, the Chinese military will not go back at all from these territories of Pakistan and Nepal.

The news that China has asked Nepalese government to teach its students Chinese language Mandarin and has promised to meet the expenses for teaching the Mandarin language clearly indicates that China has a deep interest in controlling Nepal and possibly even occupying Nepal in one form or the other. It is disturbing to think whether Nepal too would go the Tibet way.

What options for Indian government now?

India has to stop import from China. This will be a matter of concern to China and effectively reveal the present Indian government’s mindset to the Chinese government. Certainly, India would suffer a little by suddenly curbing imports from China but this will be a very small price that India can afford.

India has to develop a relationship with Taiwan in a more open way and strengthen trade relations with Taiwan. China should be given the impression that India would not hesitate to give recognition to Taiwan, if necessary.

India must&nbsp;seek cooperation from countries like the US, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Israel and others, which&nbsp;are equally concerned about Chinese greed and territorial ambitions.

It appears that military confrontation with China and its allies Pakistan and Nepal is possible in the coming days, in a small or big way. Possibly, India needs to have an understanding with the US to face the situation, in the event of attacks from these three neighbouring countries.

Above all, Prime Minister Modi has to clearly realise that China has to be paid in the same coin and the appeasement policy has lost its value once for all.

Beijing views democratic self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if necessary.

Taiwan's air force said its planes broadcast warnings and "took active intercept responses" as China's J-10 fighter briefly flew into the island's southwestern air defence identification zone (ADIZ).

The latest incursion came a week after multiple Chinese Su-30 jets entered Taiwan's ADIZ last Tuesday, hours after a US military transport plane flew over the island in a move that China called an "illegal act" and "serious provocation".

Savungaz Valincinan, an ethnic Bunun from central Taiwan, detailed the difficulty the&nbsp;indigenous Taiwanese faced, in the past and present,&nbsp;who make up less than 3 per cent of the island's population, and call for broad opposition to any form of discrimination.

She made it clear that the discrimination faced is not as bad as the African American community in the US, however, it still hurts and is unjust.

She alleged that the indigenous Taiwanese have to face discrimination when it comes to renting a house, or the usage of their language.

"We don't want any special treatment. What we want are the most basic rights that we deserve as human beings. We are coming out today to support this movement not because of sympathy - it is because we have also gone through the hurt of being discriminated against," she said.

A force to reckon with or a paper dragon? A question aimed at understanding the so-called might of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Tonight, this army is retreating from the border in Ladakh. And the question becomes all the more significant. Does the PLA live up to the eulogizing reports by the Chinese state media? Is their ground enough for the hyperbole and hubris around its capabilities? It is the largest military force in the world. It has the second-largest defence budget in the world and it's under the absolute control of the Chinese communist party. The People's Liberation Army has grown more assertive during this pandemic. It is militarizing disputed islands in the South China sea, it is intensifying pressure on Taiwan and is attempting to grab territories at the India-China border. But lost in the hyperbole of its might and technological prowess is a sense of perspective. The PLA continues to be plagued by enduring weaknesses. The conscription challenge Technically the military service is mandatory for all Chinese citizens. The practice of conscription is held high even in the Chinese constitution. But the conscription cycle comes with its own set of challenges. The PLA is said to rely on approximately 800,000 conscripts that have to serve for a period of two years. Each conscript is trained for 90 days along with 15 days of political indoctrination. Due to this policy, the forces lose 20 to 35 per cent of their combat power for a period of three to four months annually. It recruits heavily but fails to retain professionals. Professionalism of recruits The second big challenge is recruiting and retaining qualified personnel. China's army recruits a higher number of poor youth from rural backgrounds. They join for the perks. The educated city dwellers tend to leave. Experts blame the one-child policy for this. A policy which is said to produce pampered children who cannot withstand military discipline. When in the army, they're dissatisfied the post-service perks are few. This weakens the force by depriving it of high-quality professionals. Civilian oversight The PLA is characterized by extremely weak civilian control. There's an almost total absence of civilian oversight. The only civilian in the military's chain of command is said to be the chairman of China's Central Military Commission President Xi Jinping himself. This leads to rampant corruption and allows the PLA to demand and spend its budget without accountability. There is no discussion or debate over the levels of allocations funding or PLA strategies in the National People's Congress. Operational initiative The CCP doesn't allow decision making at lower levels. It's the same with the PLA. This prevents the front-line commanders from taking initiative. It hinders soldiers from responding quickly to developments. The result is confusion and frustration at lower levels as troops await decisions from above. Insufficient training The videos don't tell the real story, they gloss over the fact that China's soldiers undergo insufficient training in conditions that are not challenging enough. Military exercises are not seen as a chance to identify problems. The aim is to always succeed. This reduces military training into opportunities to impress superiors. A few headlines give a preview to what it is. The military's orienteering team was disqualified for cheating at the military world games held in China last year and in 2015, Chinese troops as part of a UN peacekeeping force in Sudan are said to have fled the battlefield rather than engage in combat. This is the People's Liberation Army, burdened with organizational problems and riddled with inefficiencies. Neither perfect nor invincible.

The Convention on Rights and Duties of States signed in Montevideo on 26 December, 1933, is the key document on statehood. According to Article 1 of this Convention a state has “a) A&nbsp;permanent population; b) A defined territory; c) Government; and d) Capacity to enter into relations with the other states.” Taiwan clearly meets these requirements for statehood.&nbsp;

It’s a democratic society, having elected government, own constitution, own defence forces, own currency and strong economy. Taiwan is a member of WTO, Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum as Chinese Taipei, and has been participating in Olympics by the same name so far. Being an economic and technological giant, Taiwan aspires for greater position and role in the international environment. In Taiwan, the DPP government did not seem to be intimidated despite Chinese aircraft carrier moving in Taiwan Strait. In fact, Taiwan daringly rejected China's coercion and&nbsp;stood in support of Hong Kong protestors. It promises continued support to political activists fighting for democracy of self-ruled Hong Kong by considering granting of asylum to them.&nbsp;

Chinese Stakes&nbsp;

Beijing’s anger prompted some CPC supporters to think of using the pandemic situation for reunification outside the peaceful domain. In my opinion, attempting to take Taiwan by force does not make any strategic sense internationally as well as domestically. It has all the negatives and no positive except false bravado, with bright chances of loss of face globally and domestically. Chinese strategist Qiao Liang, a retired PLA Air Force Major General, has warned that the coronavirus pandemic should not be seen as a chance for Beijing to take back Taiwan by force. &nbsp;Chinese redline of “Taiwan going nuclear/declaring independence” has not been crossed as yet, giving no justification to adopt such an option. &nbsp;

Taiwan with its national spirit, determined armed forces and US backing is unlikely to give a walkover. Chinese amphibious capabilities to capture Taiwan are doubtful, more so if US warships are around. China has enough missile arsenals to destroy Taiwan, but such massive destruction of Han Chinese (95 per cent of Taiwanese population is Han), who have relations, investments and inseparable linkages with their relatives in mainland and vice versa will not go well with a domestic population of the mainland.&nbsp;

China is Taiwan's largest trading partner, which has replaced the US as No 1 destination for Taiwanese export accounting for approximately 40 per cent of total exports, with Taiwan having a trade surplus of approximately $2.27 billion with China. A cross-strait war is, therefore, not in Chinese economic interest.&nbsp;

Getting Taiwanese under its wings will also bring a fresh democratic wave in China, with Hong Kong already on the boil. Taiwanese people do not want to sacrifice their democratic freedom and prosperity, which is the main reason for the success of Tsai.&nbsp;

US involvement

PRC may keep claiming Taiwan to be its domestic issue, but it has much greater external dimensions. Diplomatically the US may claim to follow ‘One China Policy’ but it treats Taiwan no less than an ally.&nbsp;The Taiwan Relation Act,1973, Taiwan Travel Act signed last year, Sale of State of the Art Weaponry and joint exercises justify the statement. US will always like to trade and strategically partner with democratic Taiwan outside Beijing’s influence, and not Taiwan under CCP.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Use of force by the PLA towards Taiwan may not prompt Washington to declare war immediately, but it could join forces with its allies in the region to use their sea and air advantages to cut off Beijing’s maritime lifeline in and outside the South China Sea. Taking Taiwan by force, therefore involves mobilisation of all its combat resources, expecting an escalation from limited war to an all-out war, as the operation amounts to crossing US redline of “No Change in Status Quo of Taiwan”. China has to cater to the repercussions of its strategic miscalculations. Economically Chinese heavy reliance on the US dollar is far from over, and such a war over Taiwan would be a massive economic blow for China, that would see capital flooding out, and companies moving of the country, much sooner than it thought.&nbsp;

Why CPC’s rhetoric of invading Taiwan by force doesn’t make strategic sense for China

The Tiananmen Square massacre&nbsp;is something China wants the world to forget. On June 4, 1989,&nbsp;the Chinese military entered Beijing's Tiananmen Square and crushed a pro-democracy movement. The images shook the world and led to China's isolation.

31 years on, China is at the same crossroads. Isolated and cracking down on pro-democracy protesters.&nbsp;31 years later, China is still a one-party state. It is still deeply authoritarian. It is still stifling dissent and still muzzling the voices of its citizens.

The entire world is commemorating this day. But not China. The Tiananmen anniversary is being marked by a crackdown in Hong Kong.

For the first time in all these years. Beijing has cancelled an annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong.&nbsp;Barricades surround Victoria Park, the traditional venue of the vigil. This event was the only one of its size on Chinese soil. It was a tradition to keep the memories of those killed-- alive.

It has now been called off citing a ban on large gatherings. Hong Kong is fighting back nonetheless with&nbsp;smaller gatherings held across the city.

The citizens are paying tributes from wherever they are. They are also fighting back in the Hong Kong legislature. Beijing has managed to get a controversial bill passed. The national anthem bill criminalises disrespect of China's national anthem. It makes the singing of the national anthem compulsory in Hong Kong.

Pro-democracy lawmakers say it will tighten Beijing's grip on their city and that they will never let this bill become a law. 700 kilometres away from Hong Kong. Taiwan too is fighting back.

Tsai Ing-Wen, the Taiwanese president has urged Beijing to acknowledge the Tiananmen crackdown. She said: "Around the world, there are 365 days in a year yet in China one of those days is purposely forgotten each year in Taiwan, there were once days missing from our calendar but we've worked to bring them to light, I hope, one day China can say the same."

Taiwan wants China to confront the legacy of this massacre. So does the world. The US state secretary Mike Pompeo said: "For the first time in 30 years, Hong Kong authorities denied permission to hold the Tiananmen vigil. If there is any doubt about Beijing's intent, it is to deny Hong Konger a voice and a choice, making them the same as mainlanders. So much for two systems."

&nbsp;Also backing Hong Kong's independence is the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given his government's biggest message of intent. He says China must not infringe on the political and civic freedoms in Hong Kong.

The European Union too has extended support to Hong Kong. It said: "We trust that the people of Hong Kong and Macau will be free to mark the anniversary appropriately. Freedom is now more important than ever in light of the recent development.''

In Beijing, several Tiananmen mothers paid tributes to the victims at the Wanán cemetery. They have also written an open letter addressed to China's leaders. They want the Chinese regime to explain the events that led to the death of their loved ones.

They say that for 31 years the government has stayed silent without demonstrating the slightest trace of remorse. The letter carries 124 signatures and seeks compensation and accountability for the losses.

31 years have passed and China continues to crush dissent. Then it was Tiananmen Square in Beijing and now it is Hong Kong. The script is the same massive protests, brutal crackdowns, and fears of another state-sponsored slaughter.

He says China must not infringe on the political and civic freedoms in Hong Kong. The European Union too has extended support to Hong Kong. It said: "We trust that the people of Hong Kong and Macau will be free to mark the anniversary appropriately. Freedom is now more important than ever in light of the recent development.'' In Beijing, several Tiananmen mothers paid tributes to the victims at the Wanán cemetery. They have also written an open letter addressed to China's leaders. They want the Chinese regime to explain the events that led to the death of their loved ones. They say that for 31 years the government has stayed silent without demonstrating the slightest trace of remorse. The letter carries 124 signatures and seeks compensation and accountability for the losses. 31 years have passed and China continues to crush dissent. Then it was Tiananmen Square in Beijing and now it is Hong Kong. The script is the same massive protests, brutal crackdowns, and fears of another state-sponsored slaughter.

First, it tried to raise Hong Kong at the Security Council by calling for an emergency meeting only to be blocked by China.

The US said that the issue of Hong Kong is a "matter of global concern".&nbsp;China rejected the request. Beijing said Hong Kong was an internal matter.&nbsp;China's ambassador to the United Nations put out two tweets&nbsp;calling America the troublemaker of the world.

The United States says that the Communist Party is afraid. So, it blocked the virtual meeting. America failed in its bid to raise Hong Kong at the UN.

But, the world did take notice when the United States made the&nbsp;announcement.&nbsp;The Trump administration declared that Hong Kong is no longer autonomous. It wasn't a statement or a comment from a lawmaker. It was US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who notified the US Congress.

The US has maintained a special relationship with Hong Kong. The Americans used to treat Hong Kong as a separate entity which allowed Hong Kong to become a financial centre.

However, it looks like Trump wants to end all special treatment. So far&nbsp;the US has not revoked any special privileges. But, Washington is certainly leaning towards it.

Until now, Hong Kong was protected from any sanctions imposed on China. It was not subjected to the high tariffs&nbsp;slapped by Trump on Chinese goods.

It's not just the US government that wants to retaliate. American lawmakers have strengthened Trump's hand with the US Congress approving&nbsp;a bill calling for sanctions on China allowing the president to&nbsp;punish oppression of the Uighur Muslims in China. The bill calls for sanctions against those&nbsp;who are responsible for the crackdown against Uighurs in China.

The US lawmakers are targeting specific members of the Communist Party. The bill singles out the Communist Party secretary for Xinjiang, Chen Quanguo. It accuses him of "Gross human rights violations."

Chen is also a member of the politburo, a group of 25 people who oversee the party. The bill will now go to the White House where US President Donald Trump is expected to sign it or&nbsp;he can veto it too.

But, considering his government's wide ranging attacks on China&nbsp;no one expects the US president to veto it this time.

The fifth and final retaliation came from Taiwan. It is ready to help&nbsp;the people of Hong Kong.&nbsp;On Wednesday, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-Wen, who China calls a "separatist" published a Facebook post in which she said that Taiwan's executive branch will come up with a "humanitarian action plan".

It proposes to give the right to Hong Kongers to flee Chinese crackdown and settle in Taiwan.&nbsp;With the Hong Kong bill, the Communist Party wanted to send a message that&nbsp;the coronavirus has not de-railed its agenda but, like these five retaliations show China has dug itself an even bigger hole.

The world retaliates against China over Hong Kong security law

Taiwan on Thursday promised to settle Hong Kongers who have been fleeing the Chinese-ruled city due to political reasons, offering help from employment to counselling as China pushes new security legislation that has triggered fresh protests.

China has adopted the plan of imposing a new national security law on Hong Kong in the aftermath of last year's violent unrest that plunged the city into its deepest turmoil since returning to Chinese rule in 1997.

The country’s legislature on Thursday nearly unanimously approved the plan to tackle secession, subversion, terrorism, foreign interference and any act that might threaten national security in the semi-autonomous city.

Hong Kong's demonstrators have won widespread sympathy in democratic Taiwan, which China considers as its territory to be taken by force, if necessary. Taiwan has shown no interest in being ruled by autocratic China.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen this week became the first world leader to pledge specific measures to help people from Hong Kong who may leave the former British colony due to the new legislation, a move that is certain to sour already poor ties between Taipei and Beijing.

Chen Ming-tong, head of Taiwan's top China-policy maker, the Mainland Affairs Council, told parliament the government will establish an organisation to deliver "humanitarian relief" that includes settlement and employment in a joint effort with activists groups.

He said counselling services will also be available for Hong Kongers, some of whom may take part in increasingly violent pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

Chen also urged the public not use the word "refugee" as it could be "emotionally harmful" for people from the city.

Chen, however, did not give details such as scale, timing and qualification of the relief programme when pressed by lawmakers, saying the government is still working on the details.

Help for Hong Kong has won rare bipartisan support in politically polarised Taiwan and three opposition parties have introduced bills to make it easier for Hong Kongers to live in Taiwan if they have to leave the city due to political reasons.

Taiwan has no law on refugees that could be applied to protesters seeking asylum, but its laws promise to help Hong Kongers whose safety and liberty are threatened for political reasons.

Some say Tsai's government is not moving fast enough.

Ivan Tang, a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist, welcomed Tsai's support but cautioned a sense of urgency among protesters in the city, some of whom had been barred from entering Taiwan due to travel restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Taiwan has become a popular destination for Hong Kongers leaving the city, with the number of Hong Kong citizens granted Taiwan residency jumping 150% to 2,383 in the first four months of 2020 compared with a year ago, official data shows.

University applications to Taiwan from Hong Kong also rose 62% in 2020 from a year ago, and island's education ministry said this week it was planning to raise the quota for Hong Kong students.

The UN is essentially a politically tinted organisation with membership for some countries being denied in the UN due to political reasons. For example, Taiwan is not a member of UN since China claims that Taiwan is part of China and it would seriously object if Taiwan would be given the membership of the UN.

Obviously, membership of the UN is being denied to some countries in view of the objections from the “powerful country”.

Several decades back, Bangladesh was part of Pakistan. After the bitter war, Bangladesh declared itself to be an independent country and was admitted as a member of the UN. Pakistan could not prevent Bangladesh from becoming a full-fledged member of the UN &nbsp;since Pakistan is a “weak country”. Later on, Pakistan itself recognised Bangladesh as a matter of inevitability.

While Taiwan has been denied membership of the UN due to objection from mainland China, almost every country in the world has trade and business relations with Taiwan including the Chinese government. Many industries from Taiwan have invested in mainland China and the Chinese government has no objection to it.

This situation shows that Taiwan has been accepted as a full-fledged country all over the world, though the UN denied membership to it.

WHO is founded with the objective of protecting the health of the world community, covering all citizens of the world. Therefore, WHO should represent the interest of every member of the world community, whether the community belongs to a country admitted in UN or not or even stateless persons.

For example, WHO is extremely concerned about the health issues of Rohingya refugees, though they are deemed to be stateless persons as of now, as they are refugees who have run out of Myanmar and staying in Bangladesh territory, without anyone knowing as to whether they would go back to Myanmar at any time or would permanently stay in Bangladesh, even without being given citizenship in Bangladesh, which means that they should be deemed as stateless persons.

When WHO expresses concern about the health issues of Myanmar refugees, is it right for WHO &nbsp;to keep its eyes closed with regard to Taiwan?

As a world organisation, it is the responsibility of WHO to monitor the health of world community, WHO cannot deny admission to any country in the world and it should not follow the practice of UN, &nbsp;which is a politically tinted organisation.

WHO should not buckle under the pressure of the Chinese government to keep Taiwan out.&nbsp;

At present, Taiwan is a well-advanced country with a strong technology background and it is very well evident from the fact that Taiwan pointed out the impending COVID 19 crisis quite early and brought it to the attention of &nbsp;WHO. If WHO had listened to Taiwan’s voice and heeded to it’s warning about the COVID 19, probably, the world could have been saved from the loss of thousands of lives and serious economic slow down that is confronting the world due to COVID 19 at present.

Whatever may be the political relationship between the Chinese government and Taiwan, there is no need for WHO to take note of it or being concerned about it.

WHO has the responsibility to protect the health interests of the entire world community and the citizens of Taiwan are part of the world community.

Obviously, membership of the UN is being denied to some countries in view of the objections from the “powerful country”. Several decades back, Bangladesh was part of Pakistan. After the bitter war, Bangladesh declared itself to be an independent country and was admitted as a member of the UN. Pakistan could not prevent Bangladesh from becoming a full-fledged member of the UN since Pakistan is a “weak country”. Later on, Pakistan itself recognised Bangladesh as a matter of inevitability. While Taiwan has been denied membership of the UN due to objection from mainland China, almost every country in the world has trade and business relations with Taiwan including the Chinese government. Many industries from Taiwan have invested in mainland China and the Chinese government has no objection to it. This situation shows that Taiwan has been accepted as a full-fledged country all over the world, though the UN denied membership to it. WHO is founded with the objective of protecting the health of the world community, covering all citizens of the world. Therefore, WHO should represent the interest of every member of the world community, whether the community belongs to a country admitted in UN or not or even stateless persons. For example, WHO is extremely concerned about the health issues of Rohingya refugees, though they are deemed to be stateless persons as of now, as they are refugees who have run out of Myanmar and staying in Bangladesh territory, without anyone knowing as to whether they would go back to Myanmar at any time or would permanently stay in Bangladesh, even without being given citizenship in Bangladesh, which means that they should be deemed as stateless persons. When WHO expresses concern about the health issues of Myanmar refugees, is it right for WHO to keep its eyes closed with regard to Taiwan? As a world organisation, it is the responsibility of WHO to monitor the health of world community, WHO cannot deny admission to any country in the world and it should not follow the practice of UN, which is a politically tinted organisation. WHO should not buckle under the pressure of the Chinese government to keep Taiwan out. At present, Taiwan is a well-advanced country with a strong technology background and it is very well evident from the fact that Taiwan pointed out the impending COVID 19 crisis quite early and brought it to the attention of WHO. If WHO had listened to Taiwan’s voice and heeded to it’s warning about the COVID 19, probably, the world could have been saved from the loss of thousands of lives and serious economic slow down that is confronting the world due to COVID 19 at present. Whatever may be the political relationship between the Chinese government and Taiwan, there is no need for WHO to take note of it or being concerned about it. WHO has the responsibility to protect the health interests of the entire world community and the citizens of Taiwan are part of the world community.

Hong Kong's freedom and democracy under threat: Taiwan comes in HK's support

As Hong Kong erupts into protest mode again to counter China’s national security law for the city, Taiwan has pledged support to the people of Hong Kong.

The people will receive “necessary assistance” from Taiwan, hinted President Tsai Ing-wen.

Over time, many pro-democracy protesters who fled Hong Kong found safe refuge in Taiwan, especially over the last 12 months.

Just yesterday, Hong Kong police fired tear gas and used water cannons against protesters who defied Beijing.

Tsai called the proposed law a serious threat to the freedom and judicial independence guaranteed to Hong Kong. She further added that bullets are not the ideal tool for dealing with the crisis.

“In face of the changing situation, the international community has proactively stretched out a helping hand to Hong Kong’s people,” Tsai wrote in a Facebook post.

“[Taiwan will] even more proactively perfect and forge ahead with relevant support work, and provide Hong Kong’s people with necessary assistance,’” she added.

Even though Taiwan has no refugee protection laws that may be used to protect protesters, the country’s laws can intervene and help people whose safety and liberty are under threat.

Taipei and Beijing share a historically strained relationship, and most anti-China sentiment, like the ongoing Hong Kong protests have received support across Taiwan.

Hong Kong’s security chief on Monday referred to the protests as “terrorism”.

“Terrorism is growing in the city and activities which harm national security, such as ‘Hong Kong independence’, become more rampant,” Secretary for Security John Lee said in a statement.

China believes that Taiwan is indirectly supporting protesters in Hong Kong and has referred to Tsai as a “separatist” who seeks independence for Taiwan.

Tsai has asserted the freedom of Taiwan, calling it an independent country, with the Republic of China as its official name.
