Facebook on Monday said it was stepping up the use of artificial intelligence to identify members of the leading social network who may be thinking of suicide.

Software will look for clues in posts or even in videos being streamed at Facebook Live, then fire off reports to human reviewers and speed up alerts to responders trained to help, according to the social network.

&quot;This approach uses pattern recognition technology to help identify posts and live streams as likely to be expressing thoughts of suicide,&quot; Facebook vice president of product management Guy Rosen said in a blog post.

Signs watched for were said to include texts by people or comments to them, such as someone asking if they are troubled.

Facebook already has tools in place for people to report concerns about friend&#39;s who may be considering self-harm, but the software can speed the process and even detect signs people may overlook.

&quot;There have been terribly tragic events -- like suicides, some live-streamed -- that perhaps could have been prevented if someone had realized what was happening and reported them sooner,&quot; Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said early this year in a post at the social network focused on building global community.

&quot;Artificial intelligence can help provide a better approach.&quot;

Facebook is rolling out the artificial intelligence tool outside the US and planned to make it eventually available everywhere except the European Union, where data usage is restricted by privacy regulations.

Facebook has been collaborating with mental health organizations for about a decade on ways to spot signs users may be suicidal and get them help.

Facebook Inc will expand its pattern recognition software to other countries after successful tests in the United States to detect users with suicidal intent, the world&#39;s largest social media network said on Monday.

Facebook began testing the software in the United States in March when the company started scanning the text of Facebook posts and comments for phrases that could be signals of an impending suicide.

Facebook has not disclosed many technical details of the program, but the company said its software searches for certain phrases that could be clues, such as the questions &quot;Are you ok?&quot; and &quot;Can I help?&quot;

If the software detects a potential suicide, it alerts a team of Facebook workers who specialize in handling such reports. The system suggests resources to the user or to friends of the person such as a telephone helpline. Facebook workers sometimes call local authorities to intervene.

Guy Rosen, Facebook&#39;s vice president for product management, said the company was beginning to roll out the software outside the United States because the tests have been successful. During the past month, he said, first responders, checked on people more than 100 times after Facebook software detected suicidal intent.

Facebook said it tries to have specialist employees available at any hour to call authorities in local languages.

&quot;Speed really matters. We have to get help to people in real time,&quot; Rosen said.

Last year, when Facebook launched live video broadcasting, videos proliferated of violent acts including suicides and murders, presenting a threat to the company&#39;s image. In May Facebook said it would hire 3,000 more people to monitor videos and other content.

Rosen did not name the countries where Facebook was deploying the software, but he said it would eventually be used worldwide except in the European Union due to sensitivities, which he declined to discuss.

Other tech firms also try to prevent suicides. Google&#39;s search engine displays the phone number for a suicide hotline in response to certain searches.

Facebook knows lots about its 2.1 billion users - data that it uses for targeted advertising - but in general the company has not been known previously to systematically scan conversations for patterns of harmful behavior.

One exception is its efforts to spot suspicious conversations between children and adult sexual predators. Facebook sometimes contacts authorities when its automated screens pick up inappropriate language.

But it may be more difficult for tech firms to justify scanning conversations in other situations, said Ryan Calo, a University of Washington law professor who writes about tech.

&quot;Once you open the door, you might wonder what other kinds of things we would be looking for,&quot; Calo said.

Rosen declined to say if Facebook was considering pattern recognition software in other areas, such as non-sex crimes.

Supreme Court today reserved its verdict on &quot;living will&quot; in cases of passive euthanasia.

The government had opposed granting recognition to &quot;living will&quot; in cases of passive euthanasia.&nbsp;

A &quot;living will&quot;&nbsp;is when a patient gives consent that allows withdrawal of life support systems if the individual has no chance of survival.

The concept is followed in the US, UK, Germany and Netherlands.&nbsp;However, the Indian government said the &quot;living will&quot; could be misused and may not be viable as a public policy.

The petitioner had argued before the Supreme Court that &quot;Right to die peacefully&quot; is part of Right to Life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution

&quot;We have been following the guidelines laid down by this court in Aruna Shanbaug&#39;s case and a medical board is the final authority to decide on passive euthanasia, not the living will created by a person,&quot; Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha, appearing for the Centre, said.

He said if &quot;living will&quot; is created by a person and is recognised, then there are possibilities of it being misused and this would not be viable as public policy.

&quot;If a person is not of sound mind, then he is a not a competent person to make a living will and in that case, it is a medical board which will have to look into the affairs and not the individual. Safeguards have to be there and nothing more could be done,&quot; he asserted.

In 2014, the Supreme Court&nbsp;had referred the petition to a five-judge constitution bench which sought to recognise the execution of a &#39;living will&#39; of persons suffering from chronic terminal diseases and likely to go into a permanent vegetative state.

On January, 15, 2016, the Centre had told the court about the 241st report of the Law Commission which stated that passive euthanasia should be allowed with certain safeguards and there was also a proposed law --Medical Treatment of Terminally Ill Patient (Protection of Patients and Medical Practitioners) Bill, 2006.

Mental health illness and its management is a major challenge in&nbsp;contemporary India. In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that the global population will soon be living in&nbsp;a &ldquo;mad and sad World&rdquo;. WHO&#39;s scary deduction&nbsp;has been that half of the world&rsquo;s population by 2021 will suffer from one or the other types of mental health problems.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Depression and anxiety disorders are two of the most common mental health problems in the world today, says WHO in its global health estimate report (2017) on Depression and Other Common Mental Disorders. The numbers are terrifying with 322 million people living with depression and 264 million suffering from anxiety disorder. Each of these categories of patients includes 4.4 per cent and 3.6 per cent of the world&rsquo;s population respectively.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The extent of mental health problems is particularly grave in the lower income countries of South-East Asia and Western Pacific region. Evidently, in India, issues such as poverty and unemployment, have further accelerated mental health issues. On top of these, there are other stressful life events, such as the death of loved one, relationship breakup, physical illness, loss of interest, failure, feeling of guilt, low self-esteem, loss of sleep, feeling of loneliness, intolerance, maladjustment and fanaticism.

&nbsp;

Death often results from mental illness, with patients committing suicide. In the year 2015 alone, nearly 7,88,000 people committed suicide worldwide. It does not need mentioning that the actual number of people who attempted suicide is much larger than the number who perished from it. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

Globally speaking, suicide constitutes the top 20 leading causes of death. The suicide rate in India and often stems from social and economic causes. For instance, thousands of farmers committed suicide in the last 2 years due to debt that they could not repay. Dowry and drug addiction are two other debilitating issues. Also, the situation has become grave as mental health issues receive the least priority in the Center as well as in the state&#39;s health planning. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

As a nation, we are oblivious of the menace posed by mental diseases to the well-being of the Indian citizen. To fight the rising threat, India requires numerous trained psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, counsellors, trained health workers, and social workers as well as volunteers. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

The crisis&nbsp;we have in hand are multi-faceted in nature. There is obviously the need to reach out to a large number of people, using audio-visual media, however, the pitfall is, there is always the risk of being too eager to analyse the clinical condition and the causes leading to it. Unfortunately, the general tendency is to put a label on every aspect of human behaviour. It is also questionable whether the public perception of a mental patient is modified by the didactic approach of the television programmes and documentary films on the illness.&nbsp; Moreover, popular cinema, in India and abroad, has been known to depict mentally-ill people and clinical psychologists in a negative light.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Prejudices against seeking mental treatment are too rampant in India. Indians are known to be hesitant in approaching clinical psychologists for help. One reason for this is, there is the social stigma attached to being a mentally ill patient. But there is also the most ubiquitous fear of being subjected to electric shocks as a form treatment in the hospitals. High expenses of consulting a clinical psychologist is also a discouraging factor. Common people in India, particularly, in the villages, therefore, approach vaidya, hakeem as well as religious faith healers like tantriks, maulvis and even naturopaths.&nbsp;

Instead, people should try meditation and yoga. These practices can be learnt very inexpensively and help one and all to maintain both physical fitness as well as mental peace.&nbsp;

In conclusion, it can be said that India desperately needs specialised hospitals and also psychiatrist units in general hospitals. The latter measure will be instrumental in bringing psychiatry from close-wards of mental hospitals to the mainstream medical practice. Another major thrust is required on teaching health psychology or specifically health education at schools. A step towards improvement will definitely be taken if we start to &ldquo;Think Globally, Collaborate Regionally And Act Locally&rdquo;.&nbsp; The success of a nation like India depends on the general happiness and well being of the people.

Her release last Friday of the unredacted version of the suicide note has left the judiciary under severe scrutiny. Kalikho has alleged corruption against several sitting supreme court judges, top lawyers and even the President.

Based on the contents of the letter, Dangwimsai had made a plea seeking a probe into her husband&#39;s suicide, a plea she later withdrew. On Thursday, Dangwimsai&#39;s letter was turned into a criminal petition and heard by an SC bench. This created a conflict of interest because Dangwimsai wanted the Chief Justice to permit an investigation based on the contents of the letter. Instead, by treating the letter as a petition, the judiciary was effectively limiting other legal avenues for the widow.

&quot;There has been no investigation into my husband&#39;s death. The former Arunachal chief minister had hanged himself last August

By Ritika Jain The widow of the former Arunachal chief minister Kalikho Pul says her husband came to her in a dream a week ago, which is when she decided to "come forward and do something". A 20-year-old national handball player committed suicide on Saturday after college authorities denied her free hostel accommodation in India&#39;s northern Punjab state.

Pooja Kumari was a second-year student at Khalsa College in Patiala city and hailed from an economically weaker family.&nbsp;

She was disheartened on being denied a hostel room along with some other girls after returning from their summer break.

Kumari&#39;s parents alleged foul play by the head of the physical education department, Gursharan Singh Gill.

<div class="media-description">
Police recovered two suicide notes from near the body of the deceased. One of the letters was addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for&nbsp;help for her family.
</div>

&quot;The college was closed for summer vacations. When the classes resumed, students told Mr Gursharan Singh Gill (head of the physical education department) that they had come to the hostel to play. But he asked them to return to their homes. When students questioned him, he told them that students from wealthy families and from far off towns could only afford the hostel. But students who paid bribe to the administration are the ones who are staying there now. She (Pooja Kumari) was expelled from the hostel. Authorities refuted the allegation, said Pooja Kumari had not asked for a hostel room

A 20-year-old national handball player committed suicide on Saturday after college authorities denied her free hostel accommodation in India's northern Punjab state. Pooja Kumari was a second-year student at Khalsa College in Patiala city and hailed from an economically weaker family. She was disheartened on being denied a hostel room along with some other girls after returning from their summer break. Kumari's parents alleged foul play by the head of the physical education department, Gursharan Singh Gill. Police recovered two suicide notes from near the body of the deceased. One of the letters was addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for help for her family. "The college was closed for summer vacations. When she came back home, she was upset about it and narrated the whole incident to me," Kumari's father, Prabhu Chauhan, said. India: Handball player commits suicide after she is denied free college hostel room

Nearly 120 people were killed and 200 wounded in two bombings overnight in Baghdad, most of them in a busy shopping area as residents celebrated Ramzan, police and medical sources said on Sunday.

The attack on the shopping area of Karrada is the deadliest since US-backed Iraqi forces last month scored a major victory when it dislodged Islamic State from their stronghold of Fallujah, an hour&#39;s drive West of the capital. It is also the deadliest so far this year.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had ordered the offensive after a series of deadly bombings in Baghdad, saying Fallujah served as a launchpad for such attacks on the capital. However, bombings have continued.&nbsp;

A convoy carrying Abadi who had come to tour the site of the bombings was pelted with stones and bottles by residents, angry at what they felt were false promises of better security.&nbsp;

A refrigerator truck packed with explosives blew up in the central district of Karrada, killing 115 people and injuring at least 200. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement circulated online by supporters of the ultra-hard line Sunni group. It said the blast was a suicide bombing.

Karrada was busy at the time as Iraqis eat out and shop late during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends next week with the Eid al-Fitr festival.&nbsp;

Videos posted on social media showed people running after the SUV convoy of Abadi as he departed Karrada after touring the scene, throwing pavement stones, bottles of water, empty buckets and slippers, venting their anger at the inability of the security forces to protect the area.

Another video posted on social media showed a large blaze in the main street of Karrada, a largely Shi`ite district with a small Christian community and a few Sunni mosques.

Reuters TV footage taken in the morning showed at least four buildings severely damaged or partly collapsed, including a shopping mall believed to be the target, and gutted cars scattered all around.&nbsp;

The toll climbed during the day as rescuers pulled out more bodies from under the rubble and people succumbed from their injuries.
Comments posted on social media accused security forces of continuing to use fake bomb detectors at checkpoints filtering traffic in Baghdad, five years after the scandal broke out about a device commonly known as the `magic wand`.

A police officer in Baghdad confirmed these hand-held ADE 651 detectors were still in use. They were sold to Iraq and other nations by a British businessman who was jailed for 10 years in 2013 in the United Kingdom for endangering lives for profit.

AL SHAAB ATTACK
In a second attack, a roadside explosive device also blew up around midnight in a market in al-Shaab, a Shi&#39;ite district in the North of the capital, killing at least two people, police and medical sources said.

Iraqi forces on June 26 declared the defeat of IS militants in Fallujah, a historic bastion of Sunni insurgency, following a month of fighting.

Now the militants were &quot;trying to compensate for their humiliating defeat in Falluja,&quot; said Jasim al-Bahadli, a former army officer and security analyst in Baghdad.

&quot;It was a mistake for the government to think that the source of the bombings was restricted to just one area,&quot; he said. &quot;There are sleeper cells that operate independently from each other.&quot;

Fallujah was the first Iraqi city to fall to Islamic State in January 2014. Abadi said the next target of the Iraqi forces is Mosul, the de facto capital of the militants and the largest city under their control in both Iraq and Syria.

The suicide car bombing and roadside explosion also injured almost 200. Islamic State claimed responsibility

Death toll in Baghdad twin bombing rises to 120

Three suicide bombers opened fire before blowing themselves up in the main international airport in Istanbul on Tuesday night, killing 36 people and wounding close to 150, officials said. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that initial indications point at Islamic State as being responsible for the attack.

&quot;According to assessments so far, 36 people have lost their lives and there were also many wounded,&quot; Yildirim told reporters at the site of the attack on Europe&#39;s third-busiest airport. The attack took place shortly before 10 pm local time when two gunmen opened fire at a security checkpoint at Ataturk airport, The New York Times quoted officials.

Police fired shots to try to stop two of the attackers just before they reached a security checkpoint at the arrivals hall at Ataturk airport, but they detonated their explosives, one of the officials said.

Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin said authorities believed there were three suicide bombers, an account corroborated by witnesses.

A Turkish official said the vast majority of those killed were Turkish nationals, but foreigners were also among the dead.

&quot;There was a huge explosion, extremely loud. The roof came down. Inside the airport it is terrible, you can&#39;t recognise it, the damage is big,&quot; said Ali Tekin, who was at the arrivals hall waiting for a guest when the attack took place.

A woman named Duygu, who was at passport control having just arrived from Germany, said she threw herself onto the floor with the sound of the explosion. Several witnesses also reported hearing gunfire shortly before the attacks.

&quot;Everyone started running away. Everywhere was covered with blood and body parts. I saw bullet holes on the doors,&quot; she said outside the airport.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest in a string of suicide bombings in Turkey this year, but the Dogan news agency said initial indications suggested Islamic State may have been responsible, citing police sources.

A Turkish official said it was too soon to assign blame.

The attack bore some similarities to a suicide bombing by Islamic State militants at Brussels airport in March which killed 16 people. A coordinated attack also targeted a rush-hour metro train, killing a further 16 people in the Belgian capital.

Paul Roos, 77, described seeing one of the attackers &quot;randomly shooting&quot; on the departures floor of the terminal.

&quot;He was just firing at anyone coming in front of him. He was wearing all black. His face was not masked. I was 50 metres (55 yards) away from him,&quot; said Roos, a South African on his way back to Cape Town with his wife after a holiday in southern Turkey.

&quot;We ducked behind a counter but I stood up and watched him. Two explosions went off shortly after one another. By that time he had stopped shooting,&quot; Roos told Reuters.

&quot;He turned around and started coming towards us. He was holding his gun inside his jacket. He looked around anxiously to see if anyone was going to stop him and then went down the escalator ... We heard some more gunfire and then another explosion, and then it was over.&quot;

&quot;Could have been anywhere&quot;

President Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

&quot;The attack, which took place during the holy month of Ramadan, shows that terrorism strikes with no regard for faith and values,&quot; he said in a statement.

&quot;The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world,&quot; he said, urging all governments to join forces against terrorism.

Speaking in Parliament earlier, Turkish justice minister Bekir Bozdag said initial reports suggested one attacker had initially opened fire with a Kalashnikov then detonated explosives.

Ataturk is Turkey&#39;s largest airport and a major transport hub for international travellers. Pictures posted on social media from the site showed wounded people lying on the ground inside and outside one of the terminal buildings.

A helicopter buzzed overhead as police evacuated the building. Dozens of passengers walked back down access roads with their luggage, trying to hail cabs. The US embassy urged US citizens to avoid the area.

Flights halted

Authorities halted the take-off of scheduled flights from the airport and passengers were transferred to hotels, a Turkish Airlines official said. Earlier an airport official said some flights to the airport had been diverted.

The airport will be closed for up to 48 hours, Turkey told one foreign government.

In the United States, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reacted to the explosions by putting armed, high-visibility patrols at the three main airports in the New York metropolitan region.

Turkey has suffered a spate of bombings this year, including two suicide attacks in tourist areas of Istanbul blamed on Islamic State, and two car bombings in the capital, Ankara, which were claimed by a Kurdish militant group.

In the most recent attack, a car bomb ripped through a police bus in central Istanbul during the morning rush hour, killing 11 people and wounding 36 near the main tourist district, a major university and the mayor&#39;s office.

Turkey, which is part of the US-led coalition against Islamic State, is also fighting Kurdish militants in its largely Kurdish southeast.

One person was killed on December 23, 2015, when an explosion hit Istanbul&#39;s second airport, Sabiha Gokcen, located on the Asian side of the city. That attack was claimed by a Kurdish militant group.

Somalia Islamist group al Shabaab launch suicide bomb attack before storming inside Mogadishu hotel

A 44-year old Indian-origin hedge fund portfolio manager, who was charged last week with insider trading, has committed suicide in his apartment here.

Sanjay Valvani, had faced securities fraud and wire fraud charges after he had used confidential information obtained from a former official at the Food and Drug Administration to trade in the securities of two pharmaceutical companies and earned about USD 25 million in trading profits.

A New York Police Department spokesperson confirmed to PTI that Valvani had committed suicide.

The spokesperson said Valvani left &quot;a note&quot; and had a &quot;slash wound&quot; to his neck and wrist. A knife was found by the body.

The police had got a 911 call from Valvani&#39;s wife at about 6 pm on Monday and he was pronounced dead by medical personal at 6:30 pm.

The police spokesperson said Valvani&#39;s body was on the floor of the bedroom in his Brooklyn home and by the time the medical team reached the scene he was dead.

Valvani&#39;s attorneys Barry Berke and Eric Tirschwell termed his death as a &quot;horrible tragedy that is difficult to comprehend&quot;.

They said he was a &quot;loving father, husband, son and brother and committed friend, colleague and mentor&quot;.

&quot;We hope for the sake of his family and his memory that it will not be forgotten that the charges against him were only unproven accusations and he had always maintained his innocence,&quot; they said in a statement.

US Attorney Preet Bharara&#39;s office, which had brought the charges on June 15, declined to comment on the development.

Former portfolio manager Stefan Lumiere was also charged along with Valvani in Manhattan federal court.

A political intelligence consultant and former senior official at the Food and Drug Administration Gordon Johnston and former hedge fund portfolio manager Christopher Plaford had pled guilty and were cooperating with the government.

The charges had alleged that between 2005 through January 2011, Valvani unlawfully obtained from Johnston highly confidential and material nonpublic information with the FDA about the agency&#39;s approval of pending generic drug applications.

Valvani was also charged with passing certain highly confidential and material nonpublic information to Plaford, who also executed trades based on the information.

Two bomb explosions rocked Afghanistan Monday morning. In the first, a&nbsp;suicide bomber killed at least 14 and wounded eight in an attack on a minibus carrying Nepalese security contractors in the Afghan capital, Kabul, officials said.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
A Reuters witness saw several apparently dead victims and at least two wounded being carried out of the yellow bus, while police and emergency service vehicles surrounded the scene in the Banae district of the city.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on Twitter that 14 people had been killed and eight wounded. Police were working to identify the victims, he said.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The casualties appeared to include both Afghans and Nepalese security contractors, Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
He said the suicide bomber had waited near the compound housing the security contractors and struck as the vehicle moved through early morning traffic. As well as the bus passengers, several people in an adjacent market were also wounded.&nbsp;

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on the minibus that was carrying Nepalese security guards in Kabul. He said India will provide all assistance to Nepal government in this hour of tragedy.&nbsp;

&quot;We strongly condemn the horrible tragedy in Kabul. Our deep condolences to the people and governments of Afghanistan and Nepal on the loss of innocent lives,&quot; he said in a tweet.&nbsp;

It underlined how serious the security threat facing Afghanistan remains since the death of former Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour in a US drone strike last month.&nbsp;

Also Monday morning, at least eight people were killed and 18 injured in a seprate attack Monday morning, when a motorcycle bomb exploded in a crowded market in Afghanistan&#39;s northeastern Badakhshan province, local authorities said.

&quot;Our initial information is eight people were martyred, and 18 others were wounded, all the victims are civilians,&quot; the Badakhshan provincial governor&#39;s spokesman Naweed Froutan told AFP, adding that the death toll is set to rise.

The district governor of Keshim, where the attack took place, gave a higher toll of at least 10 killed and 30 wounded.

&quot;It was a motorcycle bomb explosion inside a main market in Keshim district of Badakhshan province,&quot; Abdul Salam Paiman told AFP, adding that some of the wounded were in critical condition and all had been taken to hospital.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the blast in the remote, mountainous province.

Reuters reports that the attack was the latest in a recent surge of violence that highlights the challenges faced by the Afghan government in Kabul and its Western backers as Washington slowly draws down its remaining troops despite a persistent insurgency. &nbsp;

Suicide attack and so far unclaimed motorcycle bomb devastate country as insurgency persists despite Taliban leader's recent death
