The sisters of Spain's King Felipe were vaccinated against the coronavirus in Abu Dhabi last month while visiting their father, online newspaper El Confidencial reported on Wednesday, sparking outrage at home where most Spaniards are still awaiting shots.

Elena de Borbon and her sister Cristina visited former king Juan Carlos, who has been living in the United Arab Emirates since leaving Spain in August amid a cloud of scandal.

It was not clear how the two got their shots, as the UAE only provides free Covid-19 vaccinations to residents and citizens, and requires a valid identification card. According to statistics from World in Data, as many as 60% of the UAE's population have received a vaccine so far.

"It is very unpleasant, very ugly," Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz told Spanish state television TVE. "We, the people, who exercise some sort of representation, must lead by example."

She said it was not right for the royals to be vaccinated while in Spain many medics and vulnerable people are still waiting for immunisation against Covid-19.

Cristina's lawyer office did not answer a request for comment, while Fundacion Mapfre, the Madrid-based social and cultural branch of insurance company Mapfre where Elena de Borbon works, declined to comment.

Spain aims to have 70% of its 47 million population inoculated by summer, but only 1.3 million have been fully vaccinated so far, about 2.7% of the total.

Authorities are working through priority groups of the most vulnerable members of society, with over 80-year-olds and essential workers such as police officers and teachers currently receiving shots.

Elena de Borbon, 57, was supposed to wait a few weeks to get vaccinated in Spain, while her sister is officially a Swiss resident.

The outcry arose after many local politicians and high-ranking military officials were outed as having jumped the vaccination queue, triggering a wave of resignations.

A palace source said the king's sisters were not its concern as they were no longer technically part of the royal family since their father abdicated. The king, Queen Letizia and their daughters would get the shots when it was their turn.

The controversy will do nothing to defuse popular anger at Juan Carlos, who abdicated in 2014 amid several scandals. Supreme Court prosecutors have opened several investigations into his business dealings, including those linked to a multi-billion dollar, high-speed train contract in Saudi Arabia.

Spain's former King Juan Carlos, who left the country in August amid a cloud of scandals, has settled a back tax bill worth more than four million euros ($4.9 million), El Pais and El Mundo reported on Friday.

It was the second such payment by the former monarch in recent months.

The tax settlement of 4 million euros was based on eight million euros worth of goods and services he received, the newspapers said. According to El Pais, the payment was to compensate for private flights from which he benefited.

In December, he paid the tax authorities more than 678,000 euros including interest and fines, which, according to El Pais, sought to settle alleged illegal credit card transactions with the revenue service to avoid being charged in an investigation and to be able to return to Spain.

Juan Carlos' lawyer was not immediately available for comment, while a palace spokesman declined to comment. Through his lawyers, he has over the past months repeatedly declined to comment on corruption allegations.

Prosecutors at Spain's Supreme Court have opened several investigations into Juan Carlos' business dealings, including those linked to a high-speed train contract in Saudi Arabia.

His son, King Felipe, is the current head of state. Spanish monarchs have immunity during their reign but Juan Carlos' abdication in 2014 in favour of his son potentially leaves him vulnerable to prosecution.

Asked about Juan Carlos, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said the government cannot comment on any citizen relationship with the tax authorities, but added, "No one is allowed to break the law. This comment is even more relevant today."

Alberto Garzon, consumer rights minister and member of leftist party Unidas Podemos, was more blunt, saying on Twitter, "It is striking how many surprises we are faced with every month with the obscure - and also illegal - financial movements made by the institution that should be the most scrutinised in the whole of democracy, as it is the most protected and privileged: the monarchy."

Juan Carlos has been living in United Arab Emirates since he left Spain. He played a key role in guiding Spain to democracy when he came to the throne after the death of right-wing dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975, but his popularity waned amid a series of financial and family scandals, leading to him stepping down.

Morning news brief: NASA rover reaches Mars, Spain violence, and more

Protesters clashed with police for a third night over the jailing of a rapper for his controversial tweets. Angry demonstrations erupted after police detained Pablo Hasel (32) on Tuesday. Hasel was holed up in a university in Catalonia to avoid jail in a highly contentious free speech case. Dozens of people have been arrested since Tuesday night.

The violence has thrust the hard-left Podemos party -- the junior partner in Spain's leftwing coalition which has opposed Hasel's jailing and publicly supported the protesters -- into the firing line.

Police reported six arrests in Barcelona on Thursday after protesters set up barricades, prompting police to fire tear gas.

Burning rubbish bins and furniture was seen in the centre of the Catalan capital.

Newsroom of the newspaper El Periodico de Cataluna was attacked. Images of clashes in Valencia were shown on TVE television.

Hundreds of people gathered in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square calling for Hasel's release. The people hurled bottles at police who charged at them. The clashes lasted several hours as per AFP.

Police arrested 19 people, while the city's emergency services said 55 people were injured, among them 35 police officers.

In Barcelona and three other Catalan cities, demonstrators lobbed objects at police and set barricades ablaze on Wednesday, with police charging the protesters and in some places firing foam rounds. Some 50 people were arrested across the country.

The director of Catalonia's regional police force, Pere Ferrer, said officers faced a "highly complex scenario" because of the "high volume of public disorder" which included looting.

Spain: Hundreds protest for third night after rapper's jailing

Places of worship have emotions attached with them. These are the places where thousands spend prayerful time and attain peace. It is therefore understandable that public reaction is often strong when the authorities decide to make modifications to a particular monument. A similar situation has occured in case of the cathedral in Burgos in Spain. The cathedral is steeped in history. It was built 800 years ago.

The Archidiocessis of Burgos has decided to install bronze doors in place of current wooden ones. The wooden doors are showing effects time has had on them. This simple installation of bronze doors has led to a huge uproar. The door cost 1.2 million euros and have been designed by award-winning artist Antonio Lopez.

More than 31,000 people have signed petition against these doors. Some of them have alsp been quoted as regarding the doors an "eyesore". The bronze doors have been designed in contemporary art style.

Cathedral authorities are defending the bronze doors by apparently hinting at artistic value addition the doors with cause. As per the authorities, the cathedral has had structural additions over centuries that were done in different artistic styles reflective of what was considered aestetic in respective times.

The petition signed by thousands questions the spend of millions of euros for bronze door.

“Given the queues of hungry people we’re seeing, and the fact that the cathedral doesn’t even have central heating – which is no laughing matter in Burgos – why is the archbishopric spending €1.2m on this?” says the petition as per The Guardian. Even United Nations (UN) has advised against these doors.

Final decision on the doors will be taken by culture department of the government of Castilla y León, the Spanish region where Burgos is located.

Places of worship have emotions attached with them. These are the places where thousands spend prayerful time and attain peace. It is therefore understandable that public reaction is often strong when the authorities decide to make modifications to a particular monument.

Spanish police on Wednesday said they seized around four million counterfeit medical-grade face masks at a hotel during a raid on a gathering that violated virus restrictions.

Officers found the masks inside cardboard boxes on the ground floor and in the warehouse of the hotel in Leganes on Madrid's southern outskirts, police said in a statement.

The boxes were 'ready to be transported' and marked as containing high-protection KN95 and FFP2 face masks, it said.

In addition, police found a printer that was capable of printing masks with the so-called CE mark, reflecting conformity to European standards.

"The material, which was seized leads investigators to believe that non-approved masks were being put through a (CE-mark) printing process so they could be put on the market as certified masks," the statement said.

Police searched the hotel after being notified of a gathering of 48 youths that violated restrictions regarding the number of people allowed to meet up.

A Spaniard known as "the man with 2,000 tumours" who lied about having terminal cancer was handed a two-year jail term Monday for scamming donations from thousands, including celebrities.

Paco Sanz, 50, appeared regularly on television and social media between 2010 and 2017, claiming to have nearly 2,000 tumours as a result of Cowden syndrome.

Saying he had only months to live, he appealed for donations via his web page, through text messages and even a charity gala.

Although he did suffer from the syndrome, all his tumours were benign and posed no threat to his life.

Prosecutors say the former security guard collected just under 265,000 euros ($319,000) before being arrested in March 2017 in the eastern Valencia region.

Among those who sent him money were popular television presenter Jorge Javier Vazquez and Spanish footballer Alvaro Negredo.

Prosecutors accused Sanz of "taking advantage of his illness" to "obtain illegal funding".

They said he presented the disease as being "much more serious than it really was" and of falsely claiming he could only be saved if he got experimental treatment in the United States.

In reality, he travelled to the US to take part in a free clinical trial and "all his costs were covered" by the firm running it, prosecutors added.

In video obtained by Spanish media at the time of his arrest, Sanz could be seen joking with his girlfriend and family members about the lies he was telling.

As his trial opened in Madrid on Monday, Sanz pleaded guilty to fraud, receiving a two-year jail sentence, while his girlfriend was sentenced to a year and nine months for being his accomplice.

But they are not likely to serve time behind bars, as sentences below two years are usually suspended in Spain for first-time offenders convicted of non-violent crimes.

The trial will continue so the court can determine how much money the pair owe in damages.

Spain on Friday set a maximum age limit to receive Astrazeneca's coronavirus vaccine. Now the vaccine will only be administered to those aged 55 and below. Spain has joined the growing list of countries who are restricting the vaccine's use. European Medicines Agency has allowed use of the vaccine for all adults.

"The public health commission, at a meeting on Friday and following scientific evidence, has approved setting as 55 the maximum age for people to get the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19," Spanish health ministry said in a statement.

Spain will receive its first shipment of AstraZeneca vaccines this weekend, it added.

Last week, Germany's vaccine authority advised against use of Astrazeneca COVID vaccine for people more than 65 years old. It said that enough data on its effectiveness in the age group was not available.

France followed suit on Tuesday and Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands and Sweden have taken similar steps, while Switzerland has called for "additional studies" and although Italy approved the jab, it recommended using an alternative vaccine for the over-55s.

The Dutch Health Council said Thursday that the vaccine's efficacy in people aged over 55 was unclear because only a small number of that age took part in clinical trials.

The age controversy compounds a row over a shortfall in deliveries from AstraZeneca that has forced the EU to recalibrate its vaccination strategy.

Spain has so far vaccinated just under two million people and plans to have covered 70 per cent of its population by the summer's end, a goal reaffirmed on Wednesday by the government despite shortages and delays in vaccine supplies.

Also on Wednesday, Health Minister Carolina Darias said Spain was "open" to the idea of using Russia's Sputnik V vaccine as long as it was approved by European regulators.

Originally thought to mainly affect the respiratory system, researchers now know that the symptoms of Covid-19 are numerous and varied.

Severe cases of Covid-19 might impact the quality of a man's sperm, thus possibly impacting his fertility, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Reproduction.

"These findings provide the first direct experimental evidence that the male reproductive system could be targeted and damaged by Covid-19," the authors concluded.

Experts commenting on the research, however, said the capacity of the virus to compromise fertility in men remains unproven.

Covid-19 causes respiratory illness, especially in older people and those with underlying medical problems.

The world has seen more than 100 million confirmed cases since the disease emerged in central China at the end of 2019.

Transmitted through respiratory droplets, the disease attacks the lungs, kidneys, intestines and heart.

It can also infect male reproductive organs, impairing sperm cell development and disrupting reproductive hormones, earlier studies have shown. The same receptors the virus uses to access lung tissue are also found in the testicles.

But the effects of the virus on the ability of men to reproduce remained unclear.

Behzad Hajizadeh Maleki and Bakhtyar Tartibian from Justus-Liebig-University in Germany searched for biological markers that might indicate a negative impact on fertility.

Analysis done at 10-day intervals for 60 days in 84 men with Covid-19 was compared to data for 105 healthy men.

In the Covid-19 patients, sperm cells showed a significant increase in markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, a chemical imbalance that can damage DNA and proteins in the body.

'Strong note of caution'

"These effects on sperm cells are associated with lower sperm quality and reduced fertility potential," said Maleki in a statement.

"Although these effects tended to improve over time, they remained significantly and abnormally higher in Covid-19 patients."

The more severe the disease, the bigger the changes, he added.

The male reproductive system "should be considered a vulnerable route of Covid-19 infection and declared a high-risk organ by the World Health Organisation," Maleki said.

Experts not involved in the study welcomed the research but cautioned that more was needed before drawing hard and fast conclusions.

"Men should not be unduly alarmed," noted Alison Campbell, director of the embryology of the CARE Fertility Group in Britain.

"There is currently no definitive evidence of long-lasting damage caused by Covid-19, to sperm or male reproductive potential," she told the London-based Science Media Centre.

The results could have been skewed, she added, by the fact that men recovering from Covid were treated with corticosteroids and antiviral therapies, while the control group was not.

Allan Pacey, a specialist in male reproductive medicine at the University of Sheffield, raised a "stong note of caution" on how the data was interpreted.

Some of the indicators of decreased sperm quality could be due to factors besides Covid-19, he said, noting that more men in the Covid-19 group were overweight.

The simple fact that only one group was very sick -- no matter the cause -- also needed to be taken into account, he added.

"We already know that a febrile illness can impact on sperm production, regardless of what caused it."

Coronavirus may damage sperm quality, reduce male fertility: Study

In a sign that it expects increased influx of migrants, Spain is launching a new migration policy in the Canary Islands. Spain largely refuses to transfer migrants from Canary Islands to the mainland. A huge jump in arrivals from Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa occurred last year and it created tensions in the archipelago. Authorities have started moving some migrants to tents in two camps on Gran Canaria.

Four more will be opened in mid-February on Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura islands for up to 7,000 migrants.

They mostly comprise outdoor tents in unused military facilities where people can enter and leave freely, and are meant to house migrants pending extradition or having their international protection requests processed, officials said. The tents will be later replaced by permanent facilities.

Spanish government says that it does not want to transfer migrants to mainland because it can encourage more migrants to come to Europe. Migrants from north or west Africa come to Canary Islands in rickety boats often in hopes of reaching mainland Spain.

Txema Santana, spokesman of refugees non-profit CEAR, criticised this, saying: "Accumulating people in a reception territory like the Canaries will generate nothing positive for the local population or the migrants because it complicates their access to rights."

The government, he said, was acting too late, not coordinating with local authorities and not providing good enough living conditions in the camps.

The Migrations Ministry, responsible for the camps, declined to comment.

The government has repeatedly defended its policy while insisting the Canaries would not be similar to Greece's Lesbos island where a massive overcrowded migrant camp suffered a fire in September.

Around 23,000 migrants arrived in the Canaries last year, up from 2,687 in 2019.

Often seeking to flee from the coronavirus' ravaging economic impact on their home countries, they travel mainly from Morocco along a dangerous route in the Atlantic as smugglers avoid journeys from the better-policed Mediterranean coast, a Spanish Interior Ministry source and police source said.

Can people come back from the dead? In purely scientific terms, the answer is no. But for a woman in Spain, it's difficult to answer.

An 85-year-old woman, who was thought to be ''dead'' by her family suddenly reappeared, surprising all.

She was reported dead from COVID-19, and her family was told that she was buried. But nine days later, in flesh and bone, she appeared. Turns out, there was a mix-up over names, and the family of Rogelia Blanco was informed that she had passed away on January 13.

Owing to protocols in place for the prevention of COVID-19, the family was not allowed to attend the funeral.

On Saturday, she showed up at her care home in Xove in Spain. Upon seeing her, Ramon Blanco, her husband was overwhelmed, as reported by local media.

"I could not believe it. I was crying, after the death of my wife," reports quoted him as saying.

Turns out, the woman who shared her room with Blanco had passed away.

According to local reports, the error occurred after a few residents, including Blanco, who had tested positive for the virus were sent to a different care home on December 29 for treatment.

A local court has also been informed to retract the error over her death.

Spanish woman who 'died' of coronavirus returns home after 10 days

Spain's tennis federation (RFET) on Saturday apologised to Tennis Australia (TA) after complaining about the treatment of two Spanish players in quarantine before next month's Australian Open.

More than 70 players have been confined to their rooms after some passengers on three charter flights that brought them to Australia tested positive for the new coronavirus. Other players are able to train for up to five hours a day.

"We apologise to TA if our statement has at any time been interpreted as a criticism of their working methods, nothing is further from our intention," RFET said in a statement.

The federation had said on Thursday said two players - Mario Vilella and Carlos Alcaraz - had not been informed they would be strictly confined if they were on a flight with someone who tested positive "regardless of the physical proximity".

In the earlier statement, it said it was clear the duo would not be able to compete on "equal terms" at the major and the confinement could result in physical and psychological harm.

On Saturday RFET said its intention had been "to request the Australian Open, with the utmost respect for their skills, the possibility of exploring safe training options for Spanish players affected by isolation for 14 days."

"This initiative is based on good faith and in no way calls into question the actions of the Australian Government or the Australian Open."

On Saturday, there were three new cases recorded among international arrivals in hotel quarantine in Victoria. It was not made clear whether the new cases were linked to the Australian Open.

Spain's Paula Badosa on Thursday became the first player who had entered for the Grand Slam to confirm a positive test.

"The RFET thanks TA for the effort to organise, in these difficult moments due to the pandemic, the first Grand Slam of the season, something vital for our players who are going to compete again and generate resources," RFET added.

Four people died in Spain as Storm Filomena caused travel chaos across the country, but those who were more fortunate in the Spanish capital Madrid put on their skis and snowshoes to enjoy the city's biggest snowfall in decades. Advice from emergency services was to stay home, but people were seen skiing and sledding down the slope across Madrid's Prado Museum on Saturday (January 9).

Spain will continue to carry out its vaccination program as it was predicted despite the heavy snowfall. Rescue teams are delivering the COVID-19 vaccine and also food to areas that have been cut off by the snowstorm.

Snowstorm hit Spain goes ahead with vaccination drive

Authorities in Spain are sending out convoys with coronavirus vaccines and food supplies to areas that have been cut off by Storm Filomena.
