Spain coach Luis Enrique believes Tuesday's Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy could hinge on who dominates possession.

Spain broke a tournament record for possession in their opening game against Sweden but had little to show for it as the game finished 0-0.

However, he said his team, rather like this new-look Italy side that have captured neutrals' hearts, were most comfortable with the ball at their feet.

"That's one of the first questions to settle. We are leaders in ball possession but they can also make use of it and enjoy the ball, that'll be the first battle we need to conquer," Luis Enrique told a news conference on Monday.

"They can adapt to not having the ball, they've done that in the tournament in certain stages but they're more comfortable with the ball and stronger with it.

"Our objective is clear, we want the ball, we need it, if we have to do something different we will adapt but we prefer to have possession of the ball."

Italy has played a big role in Luis Enrique's career as he got his first major coaching job with AS Roma a decade ago before going on to take charge of Celta Vigo, Barcelona, and the Spanish national side.

He has vivid memories of facing Italy as a player too, in particular when Mauro Tassotti broke his nose in a 1994 World Cup quarter-final defeat with a flying elbow that went unpunished on the day, although led to the striker being served an eight-game ban.

The coach laughed when the infamous moment was raised but said he had moved on from it.

"It's been so many years, and my nose is all the better for it. I've spoken to Tassotti since and he's an honest, good guy. It's formed part of our history, although I'm sure both of us would have preferred that moment to go differently," he said.

"I have a great memory of my time in Italy and the people so it's not relevant. This a great semi-final game where Spain and Italy have the chance to reach the final and the rest is just history."

Forward Pablo Sarabia is Spain's only absentee while Italy are likely to bring in Emerson at left-back for Leonardo Spinazzola, who tore his Achilles tendon in the quarter-final win over Belgium.

There will be few Italian or Spanish supporters at the match at Wembley due to England's coronavirus restrictions on visitors. Luis Enrique conceded it would be "strange" to have so few fans from the two teams in the crowd but said he would not "waste energy on things I can't control".

Putting an end to the fight for consent, Spain's cabinet has approved a draft bill that lays down strict rules&nbsp;against rape under false pretence and fake consent.

The new law states that only a direct 'yes' can be justified as consent for sexual intercourse. The absence of consent and a 'no' will not be ruled as 'justifications' in rape cases.

This bill has been introduced after the tragic gang-rape case of an 18-year-old woman. The victim was raped by five men at a bull-running festival in northern Spain who called themselves the "wolf pack".

Scientists are concerned that a highly contagious new COVID-19 strain devastating Peru might be immune to vaccinations.&nbsp;

The C.37 strain, known as the Lambda variant, was first found in Peru in December 2020, accounting for fewer than 1% of all new cases.

According to a study published in the Financial Times, it currently accounts for approximately 80% of new infections in Peru and has spread to about 27 nations in the last month.&nbsp;

Euro 2020: Italy, Spain both unbeaten teams lock horns in a semi-final clash

Spain suffered more penalty jitters but squeezed past Switzerland 3-1 in an error-strewn shootout to reach the Euro 2020 semi-finals on Friday after their battling opponents clung to a 1-1 draw despite going down to ten men.

The three-times European champions' keeper Unai Simon saved from Switzerland's Manuel Akanji and Fabian Schar while Ruben Vargas hammered his shot over the bar.

Spain's Sergio Busquets and Rodri squandered their kicks but Gerard Moreno and Dani Olmo converted, leaving it for Mikel Oyarzabal to strike the decisive spot-kick in St Petersburg.

That helped erase the memory of defeat on penalties to hosts Russia in Moscow at the 2018 World Cup, and came after a terrible run from the spot which had seen Spain miss their last five penalties, including two earlier in the tournament.

In normal time, Spain took an eighth-minute lead when a Jordi Alba strike took a heavy deflection off Daniel Zakaria and went into the net. It was the 10th own goal of the tournament - more than at all the other Euros combined.

Hoping to win their first of four quarter-final appearances in major tournaments, Switzerland deservedly levelled in the 68th minute when Xherdan Shaqiri cashed in on a mix-up in the Spain defense.

The Swiss cause was complicated by Remo Freuler being shown a straight red card in the 77th minute, yet they held on to force the extra period and somehow survived a Spain onslaught to make it to spot-kicks.

Despite beating France 5-4 on penalties in the last 16 by scoring all their kicks, only Mario Gavranovic could beat Simon and the Swiss were left heartbroken.

Spain, though, are rewarded with a trip to London's Wembley Stadium to face either Belgium or Italy and are dreaming of a first major final since winning Euro 2012.

"I knew I couldn't miss and luckily the ball went in. On the way to the spot many things went through my head but I knew exactly what to do," said Spain forward Oyarzabal.

BRAVE SWITZERLAND

While Spain prevailed, this was an extraordinary effort from Switzerland, who ended the game without their three best midfielders as Granit Xhaka was suspended, Freuler had been sent off and then Shaqiri hobbled off injured.

Swiss keeper Yann Sommer then produced more heroics to add to his superhuman efforts against France, making save after save as Spain overwhelmed their opponents in extra time but failed to score.

"I’m so proud of the team, what we’ve achieved here with the whole country behind us," said Sommer.

Both sides had overcome important psychological barriers in the last round, Spain beating Croatia 5-3 in an epic encounter to earn their first win in a major tournament knockout tie since lifting Euro 2012.

Switzerland's shootout success over France, meanwhile, which came after scoring two late goals to draw 3-3, was their first triumph in a knockout match since 1938.

But the teams seemed drained from their efforts and there was little drama in the opening hour as Switzerland nullified Spain's passing game with a relentless high press and Luis Enrique's side could only find a breakthrough with the own goal.

Switzerland became more ambitious in the second half and nearly leveled when Zakaria landed a header inches wide post. Moments later, Simon thwarted Steven Zuber at the near post.

They finally equalized when Spain defenders Aymeric Laporte and Pau Torres collided and Freuler laid the loose ball into the path of Shaqiri, who coolly slotted into the bottom corner.

But Vladimir Petkovic's side were on the back foot again when Freuler landed a high tackle on Moreno and was sent off.

Spain were utterly dominant in extra time and Moreno missed three clear efforts. Sommer made fine saves to keep out efforts from Alba and Oyarzabal while defender Ricardo Rodriguez made a brave block to thwart Marcos Llorente.

Spain brushed aside their frustration though to win the battle of nerves from the spot, keeper Simon coming out on top to wipe the memory of his disastrous gaffe in the previous game against Croatia.

"Football&nbsp;has been fair to us as we are the deserved winners," added Simon.

Euro 2020: Spain conquer penalty demons to reach semis against gallant Swiss

Swiss manager Vladimir Petkovic said his team could leave the European Championship with their heads high after being eliminated by Spain on penalty kicks in the quarter-finals on Friday in St. Petersburg.

An equalizer by captain Xherdan Shaqiri in the second half cancelled an early own goal and sent the teams to overtime, but two of the Swiss penalty kicks were stopped and one missed the target. Switzerland beat France on penalties in the round of 16.

"All these players were the heroes of the night. They would have deserved to go to the semi-finals," Petkovic told a news conference. "I cannot complain and I take my hat off to the team."

Petkovic said he could not blame Ruben Vargas for hitting his penalty over the bar in the shootout, saying instead that his player had demonstrated mental strength by even taking a spot-kick after such a long and grueling match.

Manuel Akanji's and Fabian Schar's penalty kicks were both stopped by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon.

"We had to spend all our power and energy, and our energy ran out a little," said Petkovic.

"Penalty kicks are a lottery and we lost it."

Petkovic said he had not properly seen the tackle in the 77th minute that led to the red card against Remo Freuler - who had an assist for the Switzerland equaliser - but thought it had looked more like a minor foul.

Freuler slid to win the ball back but caught Gerard Moreno in the process.

"I question it a little bit, to be honest," Petkovic said. "He (Freuler) maybe touched him a little."

Spain will face the winner of the quarter-final between Belgium and Italy in London on July 6.

"I cannot complain and I take my hat off to the team." Petkovic said he could not blame Ruben Vargas for hitting his penalty over the bar in the shootout, saying instead that his player had demonstrated mental strength by even taking a spot-kick after such a long and grueling match. Euro 2020: Quarter-finals swing into action as Spain takes on Switzerland

Spain keeper Unai Simon said he has gone through a torturous process trying to comprehend his tremendous error against Croatia at Euro 2020 but showed gratitude to his teammates, including fellow keeper David de Gea, for lifting his spirits.

Simon, who replaced De Gea as Spain's number one keeper last year, let a Pedri backpass from around the halfway line bobble past him into the net to give Croatia a 1-0 lead in the epic last-16 game, which Spain went on to win 5-3 after extra time.

"It has tortured me a little. Sincerely, I've seen it six or seven times and I can't find an explanation, I just controlled it badly," Simon told a news conference.

"People asked if the sun was in my eyes but it wasn't, I had lots of space to control the ball, I wanted to play out from the back but my feet stopped dead.

"I don't know how many times I've tried to control the ball in my life and the ball had never gone in before. It's an accident but something that can be redeemed very easily."

Simon managed to redeem himself by making two decisive saves later in the game as Spain overcame the shock of Croatia scoring twice late on by proving the stronger side in extra time and reaching the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland.

Manchester United's De Gea is no stranger to being criticized for his performances in a Spain shirt and at halftime, he went over to comfort Simon, who also thanked the rest of the squad for rallying behind him.

"He calmed me down a lot, the fact he came over to support and encourage me helped a lot. When a goalkeeper like that comes over to you and says that to you all you can do is improve and go again," Simon added.

"The great groups are forged in adversity and I'm proud to form part of this team because the way they supported me on the pitch and in the dressing room says a lot about the type of group we are."

Euro 2020: Unai Simon 'tortured' by error but appreciates team mates' solidarity

Spain coach Luis Enrique hailed his players' character as the three-time European champions recovered from a nightmare start then let slip a two-goal lead before finally beating Croatia 5-3 in extra time to reach the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

"It was a very intense game today that really had everything. Everyone saw our true team spirit today," Luis Enrique told a news conference.

"When the word ego disappears and the word team appears, of course, it's fantastic to be part of a group like that."

Spain had taken a 3-1 lead after an incredible error from keeper Unai Simon saw them fall behind.

"They didn't really create any chance, yet we conceded a goal. So when that happened, it felt very unfair and of course, it can lead to a bit of shock for a few minutes," Luis Enrique said.

'ENJOY&nbsp;FOOTBALL'

Croatia staged an astonishing comeback with goals in the 85th minute and in added time, but Spain went on to score two goals in extra time.

"I am pleased we got a second chance. That doesn't usually happen," the coach added. "It went crazy really after the 80th minute when we could have scored a fourth goal and put it to bed. Those final 10 minutes are something we have to learn from.

"We don't have that much international experience within the squad, and perhaps those kinds of mistakes are inevitable."

Luis Enrique was moved by the fans' appreciation of the pulsating game in Copenhagen.

"What really struck me was the final five minutes of extra time, when the fans stood up and applauded and paid tribute to the great effort and commitment of all of the players who had competed," he said.

"That was a lovely gesture from the fans, it was about recognizing the spectacle that both teams put on today. The headline tonight is: enjoy&nbsp;football."

Euro 2020: Spain coach hails team spirit after crazy 5-3 win over Croatia

Spain striker Alvaro Morata answered vicious criticism by helping fire his side to a 5-3 win over Croatia after extra time on Monday to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 in a breathless match laced with storylines.

In the best game of the tournament so far, Spain fell behind in the first half to a Pedri own goal from near the halfway line after keeper Unai Simon let a backpass bobble past him.

But the three-time European champions recovered their poise and looked en route to a comfortable victory with goals from Pablo Sarabia, Cesar Azpilicueta and Ferran Torres.

Showing the spirit that took them to the last World Cup final, Croatia staged an astonishing comeback with goals from Mislav Orsic in the 85th minute and a Mario Pasalic header in added time to force the extra period.

Luis Enrique's side showed tremendous character though and prevailed with Morata's superb strike in the 100th minute and a goal from Mikel Oyarzabal in the 103rd.

Spain celebrated a first knockout win in a major tournament since winning Euro 2012 to set up a quarter-final against France or Switzerland in St Petersburg on Friday.

"It was an epic game," said Luis Enrique.

"I've experienced many intense games in my career but this was one of the best. An infinite number of things happened to us but we knew how to turn things around. Everyone saw our true team spirit today."

Goalscorer Azpilicueta added: "We suffered so much, it has been such a long time since we have won a knockout match and we managed to finally do it against the World Cup runners-up."

SOLIDARITY FOR SIMON

Captain Sergio Busquets also praised his side's mentality and defended Simon, who compensated for his first-half calamity with a superb save to thwart Andrej Kramaric and stop Croatia from taking the lead early in extra-time.

"Unai knows he's got our total confidence. The goal was bad luck but he has a cool head on him and is ambitious and he showed that today. He was ultra-secure after the goal and made some top saves," Busquets said.

"When Croatia changed their system, they flooded the pitch high up and we didn't adjust quickly enough. But overall I'm so happy with the result, how we handled the extra time, and the fact that we are in the quarter-finals."

Croatia heads home with their heads held high but are still waiting to win a knockout game at the Euros.

"At the start of extra-time we had them on the ropes but we failed to score from two good chances. Then the game turned around and we didn’t have the strength to come back," said midfielder Luka Modric.

Coach Zlatko Dalic added: "We did everything we could, brought it back to 3-3, had some chances, but we couldn't win it in the end."

Morata has been the centre of attention of Spain's campaign amid inconsistent performances and criticism from his own supporters, which took an ugly turn during last week's 5-0 win over Slovakia.

His wife and children were threatened by supporters in Seville and he complained of facing death threats before the game, prompting coach Luis Enrique to urge police action.

The striker has long struggled for consistency in front of goal in a career that has taken him to Real Madrid, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus, while he has been accused by former coaches and teammates of having a fragile disposition.

But here he showed steel when Spain's confidence was on the floor, controlling a Dani Olmo cross with one foot before blasting into the roof of the net to put Spain back in front.

Substitute Oyarzabal struck moments later from another Olmo cross to increase Spain's lead and this time Croatia had no response.

The result made them the first side in a Euros to score five or more goals in consecutive matches, with Morata joining Fernando Torres as his nation's joint-highest scorer in the competition on five goals.

Pedri earned an unwanted record: his own goal from 49 yards was the longest own goal in Euros and the tournament's first-ever from outside the box.

Euro 2020: Spain and Croatia make two changes each for last 16 clash

Recently, Spanish striker Alvaro Morata revealed that he has received vicious abuse on social media during Euro 2020 and that his wife and children have been shouted at on the streets of Seville. The Spanish forward was subject to criticism after missing big opportunities to score in Euro 2020.&nbsp;

The Spaniard also missed a penalty in Spain's 5-0 win over Slovakia on Wednesday.

"I would like people to put themselves in my shoes and think what it's like to get threats towards my family, people saying 'I hope your children die'. I've had to leave my phone outside my room," Morata told a Spanish radio station, Cadena Cope.

"My wife and children have come to the stadium in Seville with Morata on the back of their shirts and people have been shouting at them. It's complicated. I understand people booing me for missing chances but there's a limit."

Now, Luis Enrique has urged the police for a "robust response" over the matter. "I think it's a police matter really," Luis Enrique said Sunday ahead of Spain's game against Croatia in the Round of 16.

"Because when it comes to death threats, particularly in regard to family and kids, that's a serious offense. … I think it's a matter for the authorities, so that it can be met with a robust response."

Morata has scored just one goal in the Euro 2020 campaign. Several teammates, including his captain Koke Resurreccion, condemned the threats.&nbsp;

"I really cannot imagine who would make that kind of comment on social media because it can be really damaging, not just to the player but also to the family and to the kids," Spain captain Koke Resurreccion said.

"That's a step too far and it really has to be condemned."

Morata has scored just one goal in the Euro 2020 campaign. Several teammates, including his captain Koke Resurreccion, condemned the threats. "I really cannot imagine who would make that kind of comment on social media because it can be really damaging, not just to the player but also to the family and to the kids," Spain captain Koke Resurreccion said. "That's a step too far and it really has to be condemned."

Nicaragua's government on Saturday launched a blistering attack on Spain and Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya, accusing Madrid of interference in its affairs and imperial attitudes towards the Central American nation.

Nicaragua's foreign ministry, in a four-page letter addressed to Gonzalez Laya, accused her of making 'offensive statements' about Nicaragua and President Daniel Ortega, and 'showing daring ignorance and ferocity improper for diplomacy'.

The letter does not specify which remarks by the Spanish foreign minister offended Nicaragua's leftist government.

Over the past few weeks, the Spanish government had urged Nicaragua to release prominent opposition leaders, who had been detained in a widespread crackdown by the Ortega's government ahead of presidential elections in November.

Spain's embassy in Nicaragua did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the crackdown, Ortega's government has arrested about 20 political opponents, including five presidential hopefuls, ahead of the presidential vote in which the long-ruling leader will run for a fourth consecutive term.

Nicaragua's clash with Spain represents a sharp reversal of the cordial relations in recent years between Nicaragua and Spain, which is ruled by the socialist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Perez-Castejon.

The United States and many Western powers have criticised the crackdown, warning that democracy was under threat by Ortega's authoritarian move to arrest all his political opponents.

In the letter, Nicaragua also singled out Spain's ambassador in Nicaragua, Maria del Mar Fernandez-Palacios Carmona, for criticism.

Fernandez-Palacios was "just a pale reflection of an interfering, intrusive, badly educated, spoiled, capricious, devitalised and servile policy" that was submissive to the United States, the letter stated.

The letter also highlighted crimes committed by colonial administrations when Spain controlled the area from the 16th century until Nicaragua's independence in 1821, and to the indigenous people of Latin America.

While Ortega often brings up imperialism in stump speeches, it is usually directed at the United States.

Nicaragua lambastes Spanish foreign minister in furious broadside

Spain striker Alvaro Morata said he has received vicious abuse on social media during Euro 2020 and that his wife and children have been shouted at on the streets of Seville.

Morata has been the center of attention since before the tournament began after being booed by Spain fans in a friendly with Portugal and then missing big opportunities in the 0-0 draw with Sweden and 1-1 draw with Poland.

He also missed a penalty in Spain's 5-0 win over Slovakia on Wednesday.

Morata said he had a sleepless night after missing the penalty against Slovakia, which set up a last-16 tie with Croatia but does not regret taking the spot-kick.

He said that despite the abuse and criticism he has faced he feels a huge level of support from his teammates, adding former Spain great Iker Casillas had called him to lift his spirits.

"I'm proud of the fact I picked up the ball (to take the penalty) after people booed me in the warm-up. A few years ago I would have been devastated but I'm really motivated. Whoever thinks the opposite doesn't know me," he said.

"It's hard to find a group like this, especially in the difficult times. After a week like this, I've been aware of how everyone looks at me but I look in their eyes and see they are supporting me."

The COVID-19 Delta variant, first identified in India, now accounts for more than 20 per cent of coronavirus infections in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

"The Delta variant is currently the greatest threat in the US to our attempt to eliminate COVID-19," Dr Anthony Fauci, the country`s top infectious disease expert, warned at a White House briefing. "Good news: Our vaccines are effective against the Delta variant."

The variant makes up more than 50 per cent of new infections in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.

With the Delta variant spreading rapidly among younger populations, Biden`s White House is urging 18 to 26-year-olds to get vaccinated. Fauci lists under-vaccinated regions as the country`s main "obstacles" to crushing the virus.

"If you look at the growing threat of what we`re all concerned about: the Delta variant. What do we know about that variant? The transmissibility is unquestionably greater than the wild-type SARS-CoV-2, as well as the Alpha variant. It is associated with increased disease severity, as reflected by hospitalisation risk, compared to Alpha," Fauci said.

Fauci pointed to an Imperial College study of over 100,000 homes which found that youth were driving the UK surge. The results showed a fivefold higher positivity among children 5 to 12 and young adults 18 to 24, versus people older than 65 years old.

He then went on to list the "good news": vaccine effectiveness. "Two weeks after the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech -- was 88 per cent effective against the Delta and 93 per cent effective against the Alpha when you`re dealing with symptomatic disease," Fauci said.

Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca shots have shown between 92 and 96 per cent effectiveness against hospitalisations.

"We have the tools, so let`s use them and crush the outbreak," Fauci said.

At this time, the US is just short of vaccinating 70 per cent of all American adults with at least one shot by Independence Day - July 4. More than 150 million are fully vaccinated, as of Monday. Among those aged 30 and above, 70 per cent have at least one shot. For those over 40 years, 75 per cent have received at least one shot. Biden`s COVID-19 response team thinks the country will hit the 70 per cent target for ages 27 and over once the data for the July 4th weekend is in.

US COVID-19 caseloads and deaths are at their lowest levels since the pandemic exploded here last year. The country is now averaging about 11,000 new infections and less than 300 deaths per day. The virus has so far killed more than 602,000 people in the US alone.

The Wuhan laboratory in China, which is suspected of leaking COVID-19, has been nominated for China's top science award.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences has nominated the Wuhan Institute of Virology for its Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize in 2021, according to reports.

Shi Zhengli, head of Wuhan Institute of Virology, dubbed as batwoman, also received a special mention from the academy.

According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the controversial lab has been nominated for the award for conducting "the most comprehensive and systematic identification research on the aetiology of COVID-19."

In medical context, aetiology refers to the investigation or attribution of the cause, set of causes, or manner of causation of a disease or condition.

"The project's results have laid an important foundation and platform for the follow-up research on the origin, epidemiology, and pathogenic mechanism of the COVID-19 virus," said the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology's research also contributed to the containment of the coronavirus pandemic and the development of COVID-19 vaccinations, according to the academy.

Dr Zhengli, the lab's director, has been accused of conducting "gain-of-function" (GOF) experiments, in which scientists boost the strength of a virus to better analyse its effects on hosts.

Many scientists think the coronavirus slipped out of Dr Zhengli's lab.

Dr Zhengli, on the other hand, refuted all accusations regarding the virus breach from the lab, adding, "How on earth can I bring up evidence for something where there is no evidence?"&nbsp;

Spain on Tuesday pardoned nine jailed Catalan separatists behind a failed 2017 independence bid as it aimed to break the deadlock over the political crisis in the wealthy northeastern region.&nbsp;

In announcing the decision, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he hoped the move would draw a line under past confrontations with Catalonia's separatist-led regional government and open the way for talks.&nbsp;

"With this act, we want to open a new stage of dialogue and reconciliation and close once and for all the division and confrontation," he said.&nbsp;

The decision to grant clemency to nine separatist leaders who were serving long prison sentences was taken in order to "re-establish coexistence and harmony within Catalan society and Spanish society as a whole," he said.

Although the date of their release remains unclear, media reports suggested it could happen very quickly.&nbsp;

The separatists were convicted over a banned referendum in October 2017 that was marred by police violence and followed by a short-lived declaration of independence, sparking Spain's worst political crisis in decades.

Several fled abroad but 12 others were tried and convicted, with three-quarters of them handed prison terms of nine to 13 years.&nbsp;

Sanchez said they were partial pardons, that all nine would be banned from holding public office and that the pardons would be conditional on them not committing "a serious crime" for a set period of time.&nbsp;

"The Spanish government has taken this decision because it is the best for Catalonia and for Spain," Sanchez said.&nbsp;

But the decision has been attacked by Spain's right-wing opposition as well as by many in the pro-independence camp who want a full amnesty that would allow those who fled abroad to return home.&nbsp;

Analysts have also warned it was a risky political gamble that may help calm tensions but won't solve the years-long turmoil over the separatist crisis, which has left Catalonia sharply divided.

A divisive measure

When the separatists were sentenced in October 2019 by Spain's Supreme Court, the ruling triggered an outcry across Catalonia, with thousands hitting the streets in protests that sometimes turned violent.&nbsp;

Sanchez said although the move to grant clemency would directly affect the lives of the nine prisoners, it would also affect "the hundreds of thousands of Catalans who feel solidarity with them" and also many others across Spain "who didn't support their actions but believe they've served enough time".&nbsp;

Although 53 percent of Spaniards oppose the pardons, more than two-thirds -- 68 percent -- of Catalans are in favour, an Ipsos poll found.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court has also opposed the pardons, as have Spain's right-wing opposition parties who accuse Sanchez of playing politics as his minority government relies in part on Catalan separatists for support in the national parliament.

It remains to be seen though if the pardons will drive forward dialogue between Madrid and the Catalan regional government, headed by Pere Aragones, a recently elected moderate separatist from the leftist ERC party.&nbsp;

In the coming weeks, Sanchez will meet for the first time with Aragones, who is far more open to negotiating than his hardline predecessor, Quim Torra.&nbsp;

Even so, the independence movement is unlikely to give up on its desire for an amnesty and to hold a referendum on self-determination -- this time with Madrid's approval.

Both options have been firmly ruled out by Sanchez's government.&nbsp;

"Catalonia without Spain would not be European, nor prosperous, nor plural," Sanchez said on Tuesday.&nbsp;

"Spain without Catalonia simply would not be Spain, just as Catalonia without the rest of Spain would not be Catalonia."

Due to the expected appearance of new respiratory viruses, British scientists have predicted a "pretty miserable winter" for the country, with future lockdowns a possibility.

Children and the elderly, according to Professor Calum Semple of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), a British government advisory group, will be particularly vulnerable to endemic viruses by the end of the year.&nbsp;

Describing it as the "fourth wave winter," he told Times Radio "there`s a sting in the tail after every pandemic" because social distancing will have reduced people`s exposure to usual endemic respiratory viruses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

"I suspect we`ll have a pretty miserable winter because the other respiratory viruses are going to come back and bite us quite hard," he said. "But after that, I think we`ll be seeing business as normal next year."

Meanwhile, Susan Hopkins, Public Health England`s director for COVID-19, warned "we may have to do further lockdowns this winter" depending on whether hospitals start to become overwhelmed.

"I think we will have alternative ways to manage this, through vaccination, through anti-virals, through drugs, through testing that we didn`t have last winter," she told the BBC.

Scientists have indicated that the third wave of coronavirus infections is probably started&nbsp;in England due to the rapid spread of the Delta variety initially found in India, despite the fact that hospital admissions are unlikely to be as high as they were in January.&nbsp;

The recent data published by Public Health England showed the AstraZeneca vaccine is 92 per cent effective against hospitalization from the Delta variant after two doses, and the Pfizer vaccine, 96 per cent effective.

According to the most recent official numbers, more than 42.6 million people have received the first dosage of the coronavirus vaccination, with more than 31 million receiving a second dose.

Experts have warned that coronavirus could mutate for years and that current vaccines could eventually fail to protect against transmission, illness, and perhaps death.&nbsp;

‘Pretty miserable winter' ahead due to new respiratory viruses: UK scientists

A top British virologist has warned that the aim to vaccinate all adults over the age of 18 in the UK could lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases among schoolchildren.

According to Julian Tang of Leicester University, under-18s would then become reservoirs in which new virus strains could emerge.&nbsp;

“As a result, the virus will concentrate in school-age populations, which will eventually become a reservoir and driver of any ensuing Delta variant epidemic, as well as being a hotspot in which new mutations may arise”, Tang was quoted saying by the British weekly.&nbsp;

Tang has said that move to vaccinate people over the age of 18 could lead to an increase in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections among schoolchildren.&nbsp;

A top British virologist has warned that the aim to vaccinate all adults over the age of 18 in the UK could lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases among schoolchildren. According to Julian Tang of Leicester University, under-18s would then become reservoirs in which new virus strains could emerge. “As a result, the virus will concentrate in school-age populations, which will eventually become a reservoir and driver of any ensuing Delta variant epidemic, as well as being a hotspot in which new mutations may arise”, Tang was quoted saying by the British weekly. Tang has said that move to vaccinate people over the age of 18 could lead to an increase in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections among schoolchildren. "We kept on trying until the end but were against a really tough opponent and we lacked a bit of luck."

Morata added: "It's another&nbsp;game&nbsp;that has escaped from our grasp and our next&nbsp;game&nbsp;will be like a&nbsp;final&nbsp;to get through."

Poland&nbsp;felt a huge sense of redemption after losing their opener 2-1 to Slovakia.

SPAIN&nbsp;DIRECT

Spain&nbsp;played less fluid football than against Sweden but were more direct, while&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;showed far more ambition than the Swedes had and came close to taking an early lead when Mateusz Klich let fly from long range and struck the top of the bar.

But it was&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;who went in front when Moreno cut in from the right wing to cross with his stronger left foot and Morata diverted the ball into the net.

The striker was initially flagged offside but a VAR review gave him the goal and he ran to the sideline to embrace coach Luis Enrique, who has shown so much faith in him in the last two weeks after Morata was booed twice by&nbsp;Spain's supporters.

Spain&nbsp;nearly doubled their lead when Moreno flashed a free kick wide but&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;came within inches of equalising when Karol Swiderski's shot skidded off the post and into the path of Lewandowski, who was thwarted by a fine save from Unai Simon.

Spain&nbsp;should have struck again at the end of the first half when Moreno hit the side netting from close range.

Poland&nbsp;kept testing the Spanish defence and deservedly found a way through when Lewandowski soared to head Kamil Jozwiak's cross into the bottom corner.

Spain&nbsp;got an unexpected chance to restore their lead when Moreno was caught by Jakub Moder but Moreno, who scored all 13 penalties he took last season for Villarreal, hammered his spot kick against the post and Morata could not keep his composure either when the ball bounced towards him.

Luis Enrique's side kept looking for a winner but had none of their customary cool and resorted to long balls into the box.

They were not far from finding another goal though, substitute Ferran Torres heading wide and&nbsp;Poland&nbsp;keeper Wojciech Szczesny making two brave saves to thwart Ferran and Morata from point-blank range.

Euro 2020: Wasteful Spain held by Poland, face crunch final group game

Spain coach Luis Enrique said he is not worried about his side's chances of reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2020 following a 1-1 draw with Poland on Saturday, and backed the team to get the job done with a win over Slovakia in their final Group E game.

Alvaro Morata put Spain ahead in the 25th minute but Poland equalised through Robert Lewandowski. Luis Enrique's side were awarded a penalty soon after but Gerard Moreno hit the post.

It was another frustrating night for Spain, who drew their opener against Sweden 0-0, but Luis Enrique said he would only take the positives into Wednesday's clash with Slovakia.

"I feel a lot of hope heading into that game," Luis Enrique told reporters. "We obviously wanted to play better and give our fans something to cheer about... It was a tough game against a good opponent.

"You have to recognise how good Poland were and the great defensive work they did. They closed down a lot of the avenues we usually use to get forward, stopped our transitions and pressed high up the pitch all game.

"... The third game will be crucial, we need to win it if we want to get through to the next round. All four teams in this group have their future in their own hands."

Luis Enrique acknowledged that Spain often struggle against defensive teams.

"Anyone that watches football can see that attacking against a team camped in their own penalty box is the hardest thing to do," the 51-year-old said.

"I don't think it was that kind of game (against Poland). There were moments where they held back, but they looked to press us whenever we had the ball.

"Of course it's something we struggle with. But it's something France struggle with, Barcelona, Brazil, Manchester City, Real Madrid... any team that hangs back in numbers is going to cause problems to any team looking to attack."

A report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has stated that the sperm count and quality don't decrease in healthy young men after taking the first or second dosage of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The study examined sperm samples from 45 males aged 25 to 31 who had been pre-screened to ensure they didn't have any reproductive difficulties.

Samples were obtained before the first dose of an mRNA vaccine and again 70 days afterwards.

The volume, concentration, motility, and total sperm count of the sperm were then measured in the sperm.&nbsp;

There were no significant decreases in any sperm parameter among this group of healthy men.

"We found no changes in sperm parameters in the young healthy men that we studied who received both doses of mRNA vaccine," said study author Dr Ranjith Ramasamy, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at the University of Miami Health System.

Despite the vaccine's great efficacy and low side effects in clinical studies, just 56% of people in the United States said they wanted it.

The risk for vaccination-induced infertility is one of the grounds for vaccine hesitancy.&nbsp;

However, some experts believe&nbsp;that additional larger studies with men of different ages are needed to affirm the study's results.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the existence of a new COVID-19 "variant of interest" known as 'Lambda.'&nbsp;

It was initially detected in Peru in August 2020, and it has since been reported in 29 nations around the world, mostly in Latin America, including Argentina and Chile.&nbsp;

"The Lambda lineage was first detected in Peru and was categorised as a worldwide Variant of Interest on Monday because of an "elevated prevalence" in South America, according to the WHO's weekly bulletin.&nbsp;

The variants are divided into two categories: The difference between the two is that those of concern can cause epidemiological problems and the others do not yet have that capacity.

According to the organisation, after closely monitoring this variant, they discovered a rise in transmissibility and resistance to neutralising antibodies.
The Brazilian and British variants are circulating at gamma and alpha levels.&nbsp;

The Delta variation is the most recent example. It was first discovered in India and was classified as a Variant of Interest until May 11, 2021.

While the people of Trinidad and Tobago (T&amp;T) welcomed the arrival of a batch of 200,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine made by China's Sinopharm on Monday, the US Embassy faced a barrage of criticism and mockery after announcing the donation of 80 vials of vaccine to the nation of 1.4 million people.

The US embassy in Port of Spain, the country's capital, announced the contribution in a tweet sent late Sunday local time, stating that "every vaccine matters."

"The government of the United States of America has made a donation of COVID-19 vaccines to the government of Trinidad and Tobago. The donation includes 80 vials of Pfizer vaccines. The United States is committed to assisting the Government of Trinidad and Tobago with its vaccination efforts. We believe that every vaccine counts," the tweet read.

US donates 80 vials of COVID-19 vaccine to a nation of 1.4 million, trolled for online post

The demonstration on Sunday was organized by a civil society group to promote a united Spain and took place at a central square that has become a symbol for far-right political rallies.

Thousands in Spain protest plans to pardon Catalan separatist leaders

Tens of thousands of Spaniards protested in Madrid on Sunday against government plans to pardon 12 Catalan politicians who were convicted over the region's failed independence bid in 2017, a move the demonstrators see as a threat to national unity.

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo gave the clearest indication yet that the pardons of the Catalan separatists were "close" in an interview published on Sunday with La Vanguardia newspaper, but the issue has bitterly divided Spaniards.

Around 63 per cent&nbsp;of Spaniards oppose granting the pardons while some 25&nbsp;per cent backed it and about 6&nbsp; per cent were indifferent, according to a poll published on Sunday for niusdiario.es, an online newspaper.

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/eu-parliament-lifts-ex-catalan-leaders-immunity-369252/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

"We should stop this now because for a pardon you must show contrition, and the separatists will not show that," Carlos Bandecha, 47, a businessman, said at the rally, where many protesters waved red and yellow national flags.

Opposition lawmakers from the conservative People's Party (PP), the far-right Vox party and the centrist Ciudadanos joined the rally in Madrid's central Plaza Colon.

Asked when Spain's centre-left government might approve the pardons, Calvo told Vanguardia: "Soon, they are close. After the Supreme Court report arrives, we will immediately follow up on them. They should arrive soon at the cabinet."

Madrid's Municipal Police force estimated 126,000 people took part while the National Police put the figure at 25,000.

Spain's Supreme Court said in a non-binding report last month that it opposes potential government pardons for the Catalan separatist leaders.

It sentenced nine Catalan separatist leaders in October 2019 to between nine and 13 years in jail on sedition charges for organising an unauthorised referendum on independence and issuing a short-lived unilateral declaration of independence.

Three others were convicted of disobedience but not jailed.

Around 63 per cent of Spaniards oppose granting the pardons while some 25 per cent backed it and about 6 per cent were indifferent, according to a poll published on Sunday for niusdiario.es, an online newspaper. They should arrive soon at the cabinet." Madrid's Municipal Police force estimated 126,000 people took part while the National Police put the figure at 25,000.
