Task force spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said that "this is the most serious incident yet" as he accused China of "deliberately stirring up trouble" and "maliciously inciting hype". It involves conflicting island and maritime claims in the region by several sovereign states, namely Brunei, China Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. China claims most of the South China Sea as its own, despite an international arbitration panel concluding that the position had no basis under international law. Philippines Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro alleged that China's assertions are unfounded. He also described China's activities this week as "patently illegal and downright uncivilised". "This claim is, simply put, one that no right-thinking state in the world agrees with and which many outright condemn. (Its) vain attempt to manufacture and sell this story falters in the face of real, incontrovertible facts," Teodoro said in a statement. (With inputs from agencies)

China's military will conduct routine patrols with its naval and air forces in the South China Sea from Wednesday to Thursday, the military's Southern Theater Command said, as ongoing tensions simmer in the region over disputed territories. China's military did not say where exactly the patrols would be held but they were announced as the Philippines and the United States were carrying out a two-day joint patrol in the highly strategic waterway, a move that likely irked Beijing. The maritime exercises between Manila and Washington which began on Wednesday (Jan 3) are the second in less than two months and follow Beijing's warning to the Philippines that any miscalculation in their escalating dispute in the South China Sea would bring a resolute response.
