The scientists were left stunned when they found a rare vampire squid, the second known living species, inside the deep water off Hainan island, China. Vampire squid, also known as Vampyroteuthis infernalis, has a length of nearly 1 foot (0.3 metres). These squids are deep-sea scavengers, which are unlikely to harm anything aside from small invertebrates. They generally gravitate toward dead animals and faeces. The species is said to remain in temperate and tropical ocean environments in various areas of the world. This species was for the first time officially recognised in 1903 after a deep-sea expedition headed by German marine biologist Carl Chun. Also Read: Enormous 24-foot shark washes up on UK beach, officials use a forklift to remove the beast Later, a number of additional species were found which were actually the members of the same species. These newly discovered species were juvenile forms of V infernalis which had different physical characteristics. This kind of squid grows a second set of fins near its head while it matures and then its original fins disappear. Speaking to Live Science, a marine biologist at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology and study lead author Dajun Qiu said, "Ten synonymous species that had previously been described showed some morphological differences in their various life stages." Vampire species seen lurking in sea's twilight zone In a study, which appeared on May 2 in the preprint journal BioRxiv, the researchers said that they found the second species of the vampire squid to have exited on Earth in the South China Sea, near Hainan island, China in 2016, which they called as V pseudoinfernalis. It was seen swimming nearly 2,600 to 3,300 feet (800 to 1,000 metres) below the sea surface in the sea's twilight zone, where very little light penetrates from the surface. The biologists have observed some unique characteristics in this species which make it different from V infernalis. Qiu said that the genetic analysis further stated that V pseudoinfernalis is a distinct species. Watch: Rare bright bioluminescent squid filmed by scientists "We will analyse more specimens to ensure that observed morphological differences are consistent in the future. It seems likely that its diet is similar to its better-known relative, but research is ongoing," he said. According to the study, V. infernalis and the proposed V. pseudoinfernalis are part of the order Vampyromorphida, however, their various extinct relatives are present in the fossil record. In 2022, a new species was found in Luxembourg. It had a fish clasped in its tentacles and was preserved by scientists, as per a 2024 paper. (With inputs from agencies)

China’s hegemonic ambitions and brazen acts of aggression in the South China Sea (SCS) pose significant threats to regional stability and the sanctity of international maritime law. These activities, including the recent interception of a Philippine resupply airdrop to the BRP Sierra Madre on May 19, highlight the urgent need for a robust and collective response to uphold the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and ensure regional security. While the immediate act of barbarism and what amounts to ‘pirate-like’ behaviour has gotten extensive coverage in the media, the strategic perspective is what I would like to pen down.

Personal insights and experiences

Having served in the Indian Navy for almost four decades, I have gained firsthand insight into the evolving maritime dynamics of the Indo-Pacific region. My participation in numerous exercises and diplomatic engagements at various levels has provided me with a unique perspective on the strategic importance of the SCS and the formidable challenges posed by Beijing’s maritime assertiveness, disregard for rule-based order, and hegemonic ambitions.

Historical context of China’s claims

China’s expansive claims in the SCS, encapsulated by the nine-dash line, date back to the early 1950s. This line, stretching over 2,000 kilometres from the Chinese mainland, encompasses nearly the entire SCS, overlapping with the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of several Southeast Asian countries.

Despite the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s 2016 ruling rejecting the nine-dash line, Beijing continues to assert its claims brazenly and aggressively, in blatant disregard of international law and the sovereignty of its neighbours.

Key historical events:

● 2016 Permanent Court of Arbitration Ruling: The tribunal rejected China’s historical claims within the nine-dash line, affirming that they have no legal basis under UNCLOS.

● Scarborough Shoal Standoff (2012): China effectively seized control of this strategically vital area, harassing and denying access to Philippine fishing boats.

China’s aggressive actions in the SCS

The interception of the Philippine resupply airdrop to the BRP Sierra Madre exemplifies China’s aggressiveness. Armed Chinese personnel seized and discarded essential supplies, a continuation of a broader pattern of brazen aggression, intimidation and coercion.

Case studies:

● Spratly Islands: China has established a significant military presence, constructing artificial islands equipped with runways, radar systems, and missile installations.

● Paracel Islands: Under Chinese control since 1974, these islands are crucial for their proximity to major sea routes and potential underwater resources.

Violation of UNCLOS

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) establishes a comprehensive legal framework for maritime activities, crucial for maintaining order at sea. China’s actions, including the interception of resupply missions and the militarisation of disputed territories, blatantly violate UNCLOS principles, undermining peace, regional stability, and the rule of law.

Grey zone warfare: Beyond the visible

China employs grey zone warfare tactics, which operate in the nebulous space between peace and open conflict. These tactics include economic manipulation, influence operations, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns to achieve strategic objectives without triggering full-scale war.

China’s grey zone tactics in the maritime domain

China leverages its Maritime Militia, Coast Guard, and dual-use research vessels to blur the lines between civilian and military operations, pursuing territorial ambitions with minimal risk of direct military confrontation.

The Dark Triad: China's three-pronged maritime strategy

1. Maritime Militia: Known as the People’s Armed Forces Maritime Militia (PAFMM), these ostensibly civilian vessels conduct aggressive operations, such as surveillance, enforcing blockades, and harassing foreign ships.

2. Dual-Use Research Vessels: While conducting scientific research, these ships gather extensive oceanographic data to support the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and enhance maritime surveillance.

3. Coast Guard: The Chinese Coast Guard engages in overt acts of aggression and intimidation, as seen in the harassment of Philippine fishing boats at Scarborough Shoal.

Impact on regional security

China’s actions threaten the sovereignty and security of Southeast Asian nations, disrupting regional maritime security and international trade routes. The militarisation of disputed territories, coupled with aggressive grey zone tactics, escalates tensions and undermines regional stability.

Responses from affected nations

Southeast Asian countries have responded through diplomatic, legal, and military means. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia have condemned China’s actions, sought legal recourse through international mechanisms, and increased their military readiness. Joint exercises with allies and public information campaigns have also effectively countered Chinese aggression.

International involvement and support

External powers and like-minded nations such as the United States, Japan, and Australia (also members of QUAD) play a crucial role in balancing China’s ambitions. Their naval presence and joint maritime exercises enhance regional security and support Southeast Asian nations in defending their sovereignty.

Strategies for countering China’s hegemony

Enhancing maritime security cooperation among Southeast Asian nations is essential to counter China’s hegemonic ambitions. Joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and increased defence investments are necessary to build regional resilience. Public information campaigns highlighting Chinese aggression can garner international support and pressure Beijing to adhere to international norms.

Rethinking the South China Sea in Indian Maritime Security Strategy

India’s strategic and economic interests in the SCS are growing, driven by significant trade routes and joint hydrocarbon exploration projects. The Indian Navy has increased its presence in the region, reflecting India’s commitment to regional peace, stability, rules-based order, and freedom of navigation.

Challenges:

● Intra-ASEAN Divisions: Diverse interests among ASEAN members complicate a unified stance against China.

● China’s Economic Influence: China’s significant economic footprint in the region hinders efforts to counter its dominance.

Policy recommendations and future projections

Given the complexities of the SCS, a multi-faceted approach is required.

Policy Recommendations:

1. Strengthen Regional Alliances: Foster stronger ties with ASEAN nations through regional naval exercises, capacity building, intelligence sharing, and defence cooperation.

2. Enhance Maritime Domain Awareness: Invest in advanced maritime surveillance technologies and collaborate with international partners.

3. Increase Economic Engagement: Deepen economic ties with Southeast Asian nations through trade agreements and joint ventures.

4. Promote Rule of Law: Advocate for adherence to international maritime law and support legal actions challenging China's claims.

Future Projections:

● Persistent Aggression: China’s aggressive posture in the SCS will likely continue, driven by strategic and economic interests.

● International Pressure: Regional and international pressure and strengthened alliances can mitigate risks and promote stability.

● Strategic Partnerships: Ongoing diplomatic efforts and strategic partnerships will be crucial in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Upholding the rule of law

A rules-based international order is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the SCS. Regional and international stakeholders must unite against China’s coercive tactics and uphold the principles of UNCLOS. Vigilance, solidarity, and persistent engagement are crucial to ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.

China’s brazen acts of aggression and grey zone tactics in the SCS involving its Navy, Coast Guard, Maritime Militia, and dual-use research vessels, pose significant threats to regional stability and international maritime law.

By understanding and countering China’s grey zone warfare, the international community can uphold the sovereignty of nations and maintain a rules-based order in the maritime domain. The time to act is now, for the region’s peace, stability and the integrity of international law depend on our collective resolve and action.

South China Sea tensions: China and Philippines spar at sea again

The Philippine military, on Wednesday (Jun 19) said that the Chinese coast guard rammed and boarded Filipino navy boats and seized guns from their personnel during the latest confrontation between Manila and Beijing in the disputed South China Sea. This comes a day after Manila said one of its navy officers sustained a “severe injury” due to the alteration.

About the latest confrontation

In what might be a major escalation in the confrontations between Chinese and Philippine ships in the South China Sea, Manila has accused Beijing’s personnel of “illegally” boarding their vessels and seizing guns.

“The Chinese Coast Guard personnel illegally embarked on our RHIBS (rigid-hulled inflatable boats),” said Rear Admiral Alfonso Torres in the first official Filipino account of the confrontation on Monday (Jun 17).

He also said that the Chinese personnel took some guns which had been stored in the boats crewed by Filipino sailors, who were under orders not to display their weapons during the confrontation.

The Chinese coast guard later “deliberately punctured” the Filipino boats, said Torres.

Philippine military chief General Romeo Brawner alleged the Chinese personnel who boarded the ship were armed.

“This is the first time that we saw the Chinese coast guard carry bolos, spears, and knives. Our troops had none of those,” said Brawner.

The guns seized were for Filipino troops on board the BRP Sierra Madre warship on the Second Thomas Shoal, said the military chief.

“We fought back with our bare hands,” said Brawner, adding that Filipino sailors were “outnumbered” against the Chinese coast guard who had deployed eight boats.

He also said that the latest confrontation began when Filipino boats were “illegally rammed” at “high speed” by a Chinese coast guard boat.

Brawner also flew to Palawan to meet the navy sailor who he said lost a thumb when the Chinese vessel landed on top of the bow.

‘Illegal and aggressive actions’

On Wednesday, the Philippine foreign ministry denounced China’s “illegal and aggressive actions” during the routine resupply mission on Monday.

In line with Manila’s “commitment to pursue peace” their department is making efforts to rebuild a conducive environment for dialogue with Beijing on the South China Sea, said the ministry.

It added, “This cannot be achieved if China’s words do not match their actions on the waters.”

China defends actions

Beijing, on Wednesday, defended what it called “professional and restrained” measures by the China Coast Guard.

“Law enforcement measures taken by the China Coast Guard at the site were professional and restrained,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian, adding that “no direct measures were taken against personnel of the Philippines.”

On Monday, China claimed a Philippine supply ship dangerously approached a Chinese vessel and slightly collided with Beijing’s ship after it illegally intruded into waters near Second Thomas Shoal.

The United States, Canada and the United Kingdom have condemned China’s actions.

The rules add that detention is allowed up to 60 days in "complicated cases." "Foreign ships that have illegally entered China's territorial waters and the adjacent waters may be detained," they further state. The Philippines Navy has been damaging Chinese fishing nets in the South China Sea and removing them completely near the Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, Chinese media has reported. Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday (Jun 4) that Philippines military personnel tore down fishing nets laid by Chinese fishermen in the surrounding waters. Some videos showing the troops aboard rubber boats cutting the nets have also appeared on social media.

As per an estimate by Chinese media, the Philippine military has so far damaged 2,000 metres of fishing net and taken more than 100 metres since May 15. Chinese coast guard later helped Chinese fishermen gather their destroyed nets from the area.

The latest incident is all set to further ratchet up tensions between the two nations as Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration in the Philippines takes a more assertive stance and forges closer military ties with the US.

According to analysts, such acts by Manila were totally legal and understandable as Chinese fishermen don't have the right to operate in the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone. The Second Thomas Shoal lies within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer EEZ, some 194 km off Palawan province.

“If they see illegal acts, they can initiate the dismantling of intrusive objects since they are the prime protector of our sovereign state and the people,” Security analyst Chester Cabalza was quoted as saying by Inquirer.net.

“China will always try to twist the story to advance their national interest,” he added, saying, “The placement of nets near Ayungin Shoal is a provocation.”

China has built the world's first dedicated drone carrier, but the circumstances surrounding it remain a mystery. According to a report by Naval News on Wednesday (May 15), the drone carrier is hidden on the Yangtze. The report said that the ship was launched in December 2022 but the news of it had not been reported until now. China currently has three carriers, and this drone carrier would be the country's fourth. Drones are increasingly becoming a part of naval warfare, and the navies of some countries- notably Iran and Turkey, are working on plans for drone carriers. A design smaller than regular aircraft carriers The Naval News report said that the design of China's drone carrier is smaller than the regular aircraft carriers, with a flight deck approximately one-third the length and half the width of a US Navy or Chinese Navy supercarrier. Also read | China allows visa-free entry for foreign tour groups via cruise ships It is slightly shorter but wider than a World War Two escort carrier, the report said. The report pointed out that it would be possible to operate a fixed-wing aircraft from the carrier, but its straight deck arrangement would be anachronistic, not allowing aircraft to take off and land at the same time. There also doesn't seem to be space for a typical aircraft hangar, so the number of aircraft would be limited.
