South China sea clash: China, Philippines ships ram into each other

China and the Philippines have traded accusations over an incident involving their ships in the disputed South China Sea on Saturday (August 31).

Philippines accuses China of intentional collision

According to Manila, a Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel intentionally rammed the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) ship, BRP Teresa Magbanua, three times on Saturday, at Escoda Shoal, also known as Sabina Shoal, located in the West Philippine Sea.

"The Philippine Coast Guard vessel did not provoke the Chinese vessel," said Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, during a news briefing.

He added that the collision caused damage to the Philippine ship. “It is important for us to take note that this ramming happened despite our unprovoked action and presence in Escoda Shoal,” Tarriela said.

China denies allegations and counters with its own

On the other hand, China's coastguard claimed that a Philippine ship, which they described as "illegally stranded" at Sabina Shoal, deliberately rammed into a Chinese vessel.

Liu Dejun, a spokesperson for China’s coastguard, asserted that Beijing would take necessary measures “to resolutely thwart all acts of provocation, nuisance and infringement and resolutely safeguard the country’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.”

He reiterated that “China exercises indisputable sovereignty” over the area.

There were no injuries reported from the collisions.

Sabina Shoal, the site of the incident, lies 140km (87 miles) west of the Philippine island of Palawan and approximately 1,200km (746 miles) from Hainan Island, the nearest Chinese territory.

The shoal is within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile (370 km) exclusive economic zone and serves as a key point for resupply missions to the Philippine garrison on the Second Thomas Shoal.

China lays claim to nearly the entire South China Sea, coinciding with the territorial claims of the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. This sea region is thought to contain valuable oil and natural gas reserves, along with rich fishing grounds, and is a vital trade route.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that China’s claims to the area had no legal standing, a decision that Beijing has refused to accept.

Watch | Philippine ship rammed by ‘unprovoked’ Chinese coastguard in South China Sea

China is in the middle of another conflict in the South China Sea this time with the Philippines after China told the Philippines to immediately withdraw its Coast Guard ship from the hotly contested Sabina Shoal. Watch in for more details!

China-Philippines ships face off in South China Sea

China's aggressive actions escalated tensions in the South China Sea as 40 Chinese vessels blocked Philippine supply ships from reaching a disputed shoal, hindering resupply efforts for Manila's largest coast guard ship, Philippine officials said Tuesday (Aug 27).

China-Philippines conflict in South China sea

The Philippines and China clashed in disputed waters of the South China Sea on Sunday. The incident overshadows efforts by both nations to rebuild trust and better manage disputes after months of confrontations.

China, Philippines clash in South China Sea despite diplomatic overtures

China warned the United States on Tuesday that it has "no right to intervene" in its maritime disputes with the Philippines after another clash near a disputed reef in the South China Sea.

China and the Philippines have had repeated confrontations in the waters over the past year, including around a warship, grounded in 1999 by Manila on the contested Second Thomas Shoal, which hosts a garrison.

Both countries said on Monday that their coast guard ships had collided near the disputed Sabina Shoal, located 140 kilometres (86 miles) west of the Philippine island of Palawan and about 1,200 kilometres from Hainan island, the closest Chinese landmass.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea despite an international tribunal ruling that its assertion has no legal basis.

The United States condemned the "dangerous actions" against "lawful Philippine maritime operations" on Monday after the latest clash.

"These actions are the latest examples of (China) using dangerous and escalatory measures to enforce its expansive and unlawful South China Sea maritime claims," State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said.

Asked about Patel's remarks on Tuesday, his Chinese counterpart Mao Ning defended Beijing's "legal measures to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests".

"The US is not a party in the South China Sea and has no right to intervene in maritime disputes between China and the Philippines," Mao told a regular briefing.

"The US should stop provoking confrontation in the South China Sea, not disrupt regional stability and not escalate tensions," Mao said.

Analysts have said Beijing's aim is to push eastwards from the Second Thomas Shoal towards the neighbouring Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands, encroaching on Manila's exclusive economic zone and normalising Chinese control of the area.

The confrontations have echoes of 2012 when Beijing took control of Scarborough Shoal, another strategic feature in the South China Sea closest to the Philippines.

South China sea tensions: Philippines slams 'dangerous' acts by China

The Philippine military on Saturday accused China's air force of "dangerous and provocative actions" against one of its planes patrolling over a disputed South China Sea reef.

Two China air force aircraft "executed a dangerous manoeuvre at around 9:00am and dropped flares in the path of our NC-212i," armed forces chief General Romeo Brawner said in a statement, recounting the alleged incident Thursday "over" Scarborough Shoal.

He said the Chinese action "endangered the lives of our personnel undertaking maritime security operations," adding that the pilot and crew were unharmed and "safely returned" to a northern Philippines air base.

China defended its operations on Saturday, saying it had "organised naval and air forces to lawfully... (drive) away" the Philippine plane, following "repeated warnings", according to a statement by the Southern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army.

The statement did not say what specific actions China took, describing its operations as "professional, standard, legitimate and legal".

"We sternly warn the Philippines to immediately stop its infringement, provocation, distortion and hype," the statement said, adding that "China has indisputable sovereignty over Huangyan Island (Scarborough Shoal) and adjacent waters".

The incident is the latest in an increasingly tense confrontation between Manila and Beijing, which claims most of the South China Sea and seized the shoal after a 2012 standoff with the Philippines.

Beijing has blamed the escalation on Manila and maintains its actions to protect its claims are legal and proportional.

Following the Second Thomas Shoal clash, the two countries agreed on a "provisional arrangement" for resupplying Filipino troops based on a decrepit warship grounded atop the reef, and also to increase the number of communication lines to resolve disputes in the waterway.

The Chinese air force action Thursday took place a day after China carried out a combat patrol near the flashpoint reef to test the "strike capabilities" of its troops.

Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, brushing off rival claims of several Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, and an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis.

Manila and Berlin are deepening military ties as tensions have flared in recent months between China and the Philippines, which have traded accusations over run-ins in disputed areas of the South China Sea, including charges China intentionally rammed Manila's navy boats seriously injuring a Filipino sailor.

China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, including areas claimed as exclusive economic zones by Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague said Beijing's claims had no legal basis. China has rejected that ruling.

Teodoro and Pistorius reaffirmed that the international tribunal's ruling on the South China Sea was "final and legally binding", according to the joint statement.

Germany on Friday joined the U.S.-led United Nations Command in South Korea, becoming the 18th nation in a group that helps police the heavily fortified border with North Korea and has committed to defend the South in the event of a war.

Pistorius said that move was evidence of Berlin's strong belief that European security is closely linked to security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The United States and its partners are expanding alliances and partnerships, including those that span the globe.

China has expressed concern about the growing ties between NATO members and Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

In another display of its heavy-handed tactics in the South China Sea, China anchored its “monster ship” in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) on Saturday (July 6). The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) was on alert when the gigantic Chinese vessel entered Manila’s 200-nautical mile EEZ.

The 165-metre China Coast Guard vessel named CCG-5901 was anchored near Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands, as per CNN.

Coast guard vessels are used for patrolling the coastline of a country, what makes this event unusual is not just the area in which patrolling was done but also the size of the Chinese patrolling vessel.

What is China’s ‘monster’ ship? What is so unusual about it?

All countries with coastal lines along seas have robust naval forces, comprising of a Navy and Coast Guards. The country’s Navy generally have the big toys of the game like frigates, nuclear submarines, warships and aircraft carriers. The Coast Guards, on the other hand, have comparatively small vessels used for patrolling the coastal borders.

These coastal patrolling vessels are usually small in size and have small displacement. For instance, the Indian Coast Guards have coastal ships of about 1,800-3,900 tonnes- which is considered an ideal size for a patrolling vessel worldwide.

×

However, when it comes to Chinese coastal vessel, CCG-5901, it has a displacement of 12,000 tonnes. It is said to be bigger than any regular Coast Guard ship in the world – barring a speciality US Coast Guard icebreaker – and even larger than some US Navy destroyers. This unusual size of a patrolling ship is a cue to the Chinese aggression in the South China Sea.

The CCG-5901 even has more firepower than its US counterparts. It has two main 76.2-millimetre guns compared to just one main 57-millimetre gun on the US vessels.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said the vessel, which entered the 200-nautical mile, was meant to intimidate its smaller neighbour.

PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela said that the Chinese vessel was warned that it was in the Philippines’ EEZ and asked about their intentions. The Chinese ship, which has also deployed a small boat, was anchored 800 yards away from the PCG’s vessel, Tarriela said.

The CCG-5901 is five times bigger than the PCG’s ship.

Is Beijing inching closer to a war?

Many believe that Beijing is apparently trying to intimidate its smaller Asian neighbour, while others anticipate that it is inching closer to a war in the South China Sea with such flexing of military muscle. The latter anticipation also comes from the recent trend of many high-net-worth people leaving China- not just millionaires, but Chinese billionaires are also looking to move their cash and themselves out of the country, a move seen as a major precursor to an upcoming war.

Ray Powell, a South China Sea expert and director of SeaLight at the Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation at Stanford University, told CNN that ‘the monster’ has been roaming the EEZ since a clash near Second Thomas Shoal in June.

The Philippines has soldiers living aboard a rusty, ageing warship at the Second Thomas Shoal, which was deliberately grounded by Manila in 1999 to reinforce its maritime claims.

“Immediately following the dramatic standoff at Second Thomas Shoal … The Monster toured nearly every Philippine outpost and a key feature in the South China Sea,” Powell said.

“Its massive size enables it to intimidate its neighbours while avoiding the escalatory implications of sending a gray-hulled military vessel,” Powell added.

× However, when it comes to Chinese coastal vessel, CCG-5901, it has a displacement of 12,000 tonnes. It is said to be bigger than any regular Coast Guard ship in the world – barring a speciality US Coast Guard icebreaker – and even larger than some US Navy destroyers. This unusual size of a patrolling ship is a cue to the Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. On June 17, Philippines and China clashed over the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, when some Filipino navy personnel were left injured as CCG personnel repeatedly rammed Philippine rubber boats to stop them from delivering food supplies, firearms and other necessities to BRP Sierra Madre. The Philippines military had also shared the video of the June 17 incident on its official X handle.
