In the pair of early morning posts, the president again blasted mail-in ballots. Trump posted similar tweets about the ballot topic on Tuesday, which had moved Twitter to add a blue exclamation mark alert underneath those tweets to warn his claims were false and had been debunked by factcheckers.

The dramatic shift by the tech company, which has tightened its policies in recent years amid criticism that its hands-off approach has allowed misinformation to thrive, had prompted Trump to accuse it of interfering in the upcoming US presidential election.

Social media flooded with Coronavirus conspiracy theories, social media companies under pressure

Twitter will now notify its users before they tweet anything to deal with the rapid increase in harassment on its platform. The company on Tuesday said it's running a limited test on iOS that will show people a prompt if their reply to a tweet uses language that may be considered offensive.&nbsp;

In this new feature, the company is conducting tests where users will receive a notification, suggesting them to edit the tweet before they send.

This new update will probably reduce toxic replies on the platform that takes place in the heat of the moment or during other situations.

According to the social media giant, when IOS users hit send, they will receive a notification warning the user of the harmful content whether the tweet is a reasonable argument or abusive.

“When things get heated, you may say things you don't mean,” said Twitter, justifying the decision.&nbsp;

Last year, Instagram had introduced a similar test for its users that would warn them before they post anything offensive. The company had updated its efforts and said that the results have been positive. &nbsp;

Though the company’s hateful conduct policy comprises of a long list of harmful language, Twitter will not provide a list of harmful languages in the new update. The social media platform strictly condemns abuse against women, LGBTQ community, asexual individuals, marginalised and historically underrepresented communities.

Abuse can be anything from threat to violence to spreading fear and deep down to slurs, one’s figure and other content.

A direct threat to violence is a federal crime under section 18 of the U.S. Code. However, Twitter’s policy on slurs and tropes has been irrational and the company was heavily criticised for it.&nbsp;

The company had also been sued last year for $250 million for allegedly ‘shadow banning’ right-wingers. Alex Jones, the prominent right-wing figure was banned from Twitter recently but Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan was allowed to stay on Twitter after a tweet comparing Jews to “termites.” The tweet was pulled out last year.

The company was also accused of a concerted attack on women’s free speech last year after a feminist journalist was banned for addressing transgender women as “he.”&nbsp;

Twitter can take its stand in the stand in the debate and enforce its rules according to its feasibility. It has done this several times in the last few months, targeting accounts under its hateful conduct policies.

No one knows what will happen to those who do not follow Twitter’s reminder to polish their language. No indication has been given as to what actions will be taken against the violators of the platforms law.

Twitter to warn users about their 'harmful' language before they tweet

With an alarming increase in the traffic for child pornorgraphy from India, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)&nbsp;has issued a notice to social media platforms like Google, Twitter and WhatsApp highlighting its concern.

NCPCR started an independent investigation on&nbsp;Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), and based on the evidence procured from the investigation, the online platforms have been given till the end of April to respond back to the notice issued to them.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/with-1990-new-cases-india-witnesses-highest-coronavirus-cases-in-24-hour-period-294814">Also read:&nbsp;With 1,990 new cases, India witnesses highest coronavirus cases in 24-hour period</a>

The increase in traffic has taken place during the lockdown period, according to the report.

The report by India Child Protection Fund (ICPF) titled 'Child Sexual Abuse Material in India'. The research revealed demand of obscene content in over 100 cities in India, mainly&nbsp;New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Indore' New Delhi topped the list. The overall demand for child pornography was an average of 5 million per month in 100 cities on the public web during December 2019, which has now alarmingly spiked.

"ICPF has warned that this indicates millions of paedophiles, child rapists and child pornography addicts have migrated online, making the Internet extremely unsafe for children. Without stringent action, this could result in a drastic rise in sexual crimes against children," said&nbsp;ICPF.

In the notice sent to Twitter India, NCPCR said, "It is seen that as per your standard terms and conditions, a person of 13 years and above is eligible to open an account on Twitter. If you are allowing children at the age of 13 to open an account, the commission is of the view that you can't allow the other users to publish, propagate pornographic material, links etc. on Twitter. Another concern of the commission is that the accessibility of the pornographic material to the children through these links on Twitter."

In a similar notice to Google India, NCPCR wrote, "It is noticed during inquiry that pornographic material is accessible through the apps available on Google Play Store. By mere downloading these apps from the platform the user can access such material. This is enabling accessibility of the children to such material. There is also possibility that the CSAM is also available on these apps making it much grave issue."

During the investigation, it was noticed that&nbsp;certain links are&nbsp;available to join 'encrypted WhatsApp groups' and the CSAM and pornographic material is easily present in these groups. These links were available on the internet, and anyone could join these encrypted WhatsApp groups and access CSAM content.

"The links to these groups were found to be propagated by various handles on Twitter. The commission is of the view that propagating links of these WhatsApp groups on Twitter handles is a serious matter,' NCPCR informed WhatsApp India in its notice.

According to the ICPF, there has been an increase in demand for phrases like 'child porn', 'sexy child', and 'teen sex videos', as noticed by online data monitoring websites.

Data from Pornhub also revealed&nbsp;that traffic from India has increased by 95 per cent between March 24 and March 26 2020, as compared to their average traffic, the ICPF claimed.

Addressing the media,&nbsp;Nivedita Ahuja, spokesperson for the ICPF said,&nbsp;"This is a blatant violation of the directions of the Honourable Supreme Court, and a violation of national policy. Pornographic websites are playing hide-and-seek with Indian law and judiciary by simply changing their website URLs."

NCPCR expressed its concern over the safety of minors in this lockdown period after the investigation revealed the chilling reality of CSAM content in the country.

Data from Pornhub also revealed that traffic from India has increased by 95 per cent between March 24 and March 26 2020, as compared to their average traffic, the ICPF claimed. Addressing the media, Nivedita Ahuja, spokesperson for the ICPF said, "This is a blatant violation of the directions of the Honourable Supreme Court, and a violation of national policy. Pornographic websites are playing hide-and-seek with Indian law and judiciary by simply changing their website URLs." NCPCR expressed its concern over the safety of minors in this lockdown period after the investigation revealed the chilling reality of CSAM content in the country.

Gravitas: Social Media is keeping the world busy amid lockdown

Kaspersky recently discovered two new Android malware modifications that are capable of stealing cookies that are stored by the internet browser and social media applications. Consequentially, the attacker can then control the victim's social media accounts without the user ever finding out.
&nbsp;
Websites use cookies to primarily deliver a personalised experience to users. This is achieved by tracking the user's activity online. However, if this information lands in the possession of a hacker, it automatically becomes a security risk.

The hackers, once they have the requisite information, can use the unique session ID which is generated by cookies to bypass the need to login into a portal.

If the user ID is compromised, attackers can easily assume the identity of the user and trick websites and applications. Through this, they can take control of the accounts. This is the model that allows sensitive information to be shared by hackers. The two new Trojans responsible for this can then leak any information.

The make-up of one of the Trojans allows it to acquire ''root rights'' which essentially allows the cookies to be transferred from Facebook or any other social media website to the servers of the hackers.

However, it's not that simple to gain control of someone's account, for some websites have measures in place that disallow suspicious log-in attempts.

This can be bypassed through the second Trojan, which runs as an app on the victim's device and circumvents security measures to gain access to personal data without the user finding out. In essence, the attacker then assumes the identity of the user and then may be able to use the personal accounts of people to post whatever they please.

There's no clarity on why attackers want access to the social media accounts of random users. However, as reported by TechRadar, these accounts may be used to launch spam and phishing attacks across social media.

Igor Golovin, a malware analyst at Kaspersky, suggested that this threat is expected to grow.

“By combining two attacks, the cookie thieves discovered a way to gain control over their victims’ accounts without arousing suspicions. While this is a relatively new threat, so far, only about 1000 individuals have been targeted, that number is growing and will most likely continue to do so, particularly since it’s so hard for websites to detect. Even though we typically don’t pay attention to cookies when we’re surfing the web, they’re still another means of processing our personal information, and anytime data about us is collected online, we need to pay attention”, Golovin said.

Earlier in January, Kaspersky had also reported the existence of a malware app called Shopper, which was primarily used to improve the ratings of shopping apps across platforms. The app was able to spread advertisements and install apps without requiring the consent of the user. This particular malware affected almost 15 per cent, Indian users.

Golovin highlighted the security gap embedded into the mechanism of cookies, and how it continues to leave millions of users and their data vulnerable.

The Data Security Council of India (DSCI) reported that India registers the second-highest cyberattacks in the world during the period between 2016-18.

PM Narendra Modi gives away all his social media accounts to women achievers

After Instagram and Facebook followed on the footsteps of Snapchat by introducing the post that appears for 24-hours only, another social media giant Twitter is also planning to introduce the same feature.

In an announcement on Thursday, Twitter said, "We are experimenting with a new way for you to 'think aloud' on Twitter, with no likes, retweets or public comments."
&nbsp;
"The name of this is Fleets. Want to know the best? They disappear after 24 hours," Twitter wrote in a message posted from its @TwitterBrasil account.

Twitter product lead Kayvon Beykpour said the new format could encourage people to share thoughts they might not have expressed in a permanent tweet.

"This is a substantial change to Twitter, so we're excited to learn by testing it (starting with the rollout today in Brazil) and seeing how our customers use it," Beykpour said on the micro-blogging site.

The feature is currently being tested in Brazil, according to the statement by Twitter.

A user can create a "fleet" by tapping on a plus button which appears on a new home row of ephemeral posts on top of the home timeline.

From there, the user can type up to 280 characters of text or add media including images, GIFs or any video.&nbsp;

Once published the posted fleet would appear in a side-scrolling row of posts.

These "fleet" posts can be liked, retweeted.

However, another user can respond with text but it will open up a DM with the person you're messaging.

After Instagram and Facebook followed on the footsteps of Snapchat by introducing the post that appears for 24-hours only, another social media giant Twitter is also planning to introduce the same feature.

Facebook's Chief Operating Officer expressed worries about the threat posed by TikTok, the short-form video app which is very popular among the younger generation. Sandberg said that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/tiktok-accused-in-california-lawsuit-of-sending-user-data-to-china-265867">TikTok is growing</a> "very fast" and it has received more numbers than the social media giant Facebook ever did.

During an interview with an American news channel, Sandberg talked about intense competition for user engagement among social media companies.&nbsp;

"In the world of tech, we compete for every minute of your attention. Every day you pick up your phone, I mean my kids pick up the phone and they're on TikTok," Sanberg said in the podcast form of the interview.

The interviewer then asked Sandberg if she worries about TikTok to which she responded saying, &nbsp;"Sure.. they're huge, they're growing really quickly, they've gotten to bigger numbers faster than we ever did."&nbsp;

"Of course we worry about it, we have to be worried about all the innovation," Sandberg also said.

In November last year, TikTok hit 1.5 billion downloads and became the third most-downloaded non-gaming app of 2019, outperforming both Facebook and the photo-sharing platform Instagram. Instagram is also owned by Facebook.

Meanwhile, owned by China-based ByteDance Technology Co, TikTok is facing a probe launched by US government national security over concerns about data storage and possible censorship of politically sensitive content.

Sweeping new regulations, restricting social media in Pakistan, put freedom of expression and the media at the heart of the struggle to counter both civilisational and authoritarian aspects of emerging new world order.

The regulations, adopted without public debate, position US social media companies like Facebook and Twitter at the forefront of the struggle and raise the spectre of China’s walled-off Internet with its own state-controlled social media platforms becoming the model for a host of illiberal, authoritarians and autocrats.&nbsp;

The regulations, that take effect immediately, embrace aspects of a civilizational state that defines its legal reach, if not its borders, in terms of a civilization rather than a nation-state with clearly outlined, internationally recognised borders that determine the reach of its law and that is defined by its population and language.

The regulations could force social media companies to globally suppress criticism of the more onerous aspects of Pakistani law, including constitutionally enshrined discrimination of some minorities like Ahmadis, a sect widely viewed as a heretic by mainstream Islam, and the imposition of a mandatory death sentence for blasphemy.

The new rules force social media companies to “Remove, suspend or disable access” to content posted in Pakistan or by Pakistani nationals abroad that the government deems as failing to “Take due cognizance of the religious, cultural, ethnic and national security sensitivities of Pakistan.” The government can also demand the removal of encryption.

Social media companies are required to establish offices in Pakistan in the next three months and install data servers by February 2021.

The government justified the rules with the need to combat hate speech, blasphemy, alleged fake news and online harassment of women.

The Asia Internet Coalition, a technology and internet industry association that includes, Facebook and Twitter, warned that the regulations “jeopardise the personal safety and privacy of citizens and undermine free expression” and would be “detrimental to Pakistan's ambitions for a digital economy."

The introduction of the regulations reflects frustration in government, as well as, Pakistan’s powerful military with social media companies’ frequent refusal to honour requests to take down content. Pakistan ranked among the top countries requesting Facebook and Twitter to remove postings.

On the assumption that Facebook, Twitter and others, which are already banned in China, will risk being debarred in Pakistan by refusing to comply with the new regulations, Pakistan could become a prime country that adopts not only aspects of China’s 21st century, Orwellian surveillance state but also its tightly controlled media.

The basis for potential Pakistani adoption of the Chinese system was created in 2017 in plans for the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a $60 billion-plus crown jewel of the Belt and Road initiative, an infrastructure, telecommunications and energy-driven initiative to tie Eurasia to China.

The 2017 plan identifies as risks to CPEC “Pakistani politics, such as competing parties, religion, tribes, terrorists, and Western intervention”, as well as, security. The plan appears to question the vibrancy of a system in which competition between parties and interest groups is the name of the game.

It envisions a full system of monitoring and surveillance to ensure law and order in Pakistani cities. The system would involve the deployment of explosive detectors and scanners to “Cover major roads, case-prone areas and crowded places in urban areas to conduct real-time monitoring and 24-hour video recording.”

A national fibre optic backbone would be built for Internet traffic, as well as, the terrestrial distribution of broadcast media that would cooperate with their Chinese counterparts in the 'dissemination of Chinese culture.' The plan described the backbone as a 'cultural transmission carrier' that would serve to 'further enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples and the traditional friendship between the two countries.'

Critics in China and elsewhere assert that repression of freedom of expression contributed to China’s delayed response to the Coronavirus. China rejects the criticism with President Xi Jinping calling for even greater control.

Pakistan’s newly promulgated regulations echo Xi’s assertion during the Communist party’s January 7 Politburo Standing Committee meeting that “We must strengthen public opinion tracking and judgment, take the initiative to voice, provide positive guidance, strengthen integration, communication and interaction so that positive energy will always fill the Internet space. We must control the overall public opinion and strive to create a good public opinion environment. It is necessary to strengthen the management and control of online media.”

By regulating social media, Pakistan puts freedom of expression at the core of struggle

Pakistan's government has approved new rules for regulating cyberspace which opponents say could be used to stifle dissent and free speech.

Under regulations that were approved by the cabinet late last month but were not immediately made public, social media companies will be obliged to help law enforcement agencies access data and to remove online content deemed unlawful.

Companies that do not comply with the rules risk being blocked online, according to a copy of the regulations seen by Reuters.

The approval of the new rules follows accusations by opposition parties that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government has sought to intimidate and silence its opponents and allegations of media censorship. Pakistan's military has also faced accusations of cracking down on media and free speech.

But Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqi, the top official at the ministry of information technology that authored the regulations, said the new rules would help "identify and weed out unwanted and slanderous online content."

"We needed to do it to uphold the integrity, decency and respect of individuals and sanctity of institutions," he said.

The new rules on social media are described by the authors as intended to prevent live streaming of online content relating to "terrorism, extremism, hate speech, defamation, fake news, incitement to violence and national security."

Social media companies will be obliged within 24 hours to respond to a request to remove "unlawful" material, or six hours in emergency cases. They will have three months to register with authorities in Pakistan and must have a physical presence in Pakistan.

When required, the companies will be required to provide subscriber information, traffic data, content data and any other information or data that is sought, the regulations stipulate.

The rules also state that interpretations of the regulations by the authorities in Pakistan "shall take precedence over any community standards or rules or community guidelines or policies or any other instruments devised by a social media company."

'Overreach'

Nighat Dad, who runs the not-for-profit Digital Rights Foundation in Pakistan, says the new rules will give the authorities unflinching powers to stifle social media.

"The worrying part for me is that the definition around extremism, religion or culture is so wide and ambiguous and that means they have these unfettered power to call any online content illegal or extremist or anti-state," she told Reuters.

"I do fear that this will be used against dissent, free speech and for political gains."

Farieha Aziz, founder of Bolo Bhi, a digital rights advocacy group, also voiced concern.

"This is the kind of overreach we were worried about," she said. "They're trying to go beyond the ambit of the law, trying to go above and beyond what the law allows them to do."

The Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police that a special branch should be appointed within two months, in every police station, to identify those who spread objectionable and defamatory content against those holding Constitutional posts, high offices and their families.&nbsp;

This comes after the High Court had earlier taken up the bail plea of Marudhachalam, a Chennai resident who was arrested for having posted defamatory, objectionable content about a sitting Judge. However, Marudhachalam was granted bail for having tendered an unconditional apology, besides having agreed to remove the objectionable, defamatory social media post.&nbsp;

Justice Dhandapani had earlier said that it had become a common, rampant practice for social media users to share defamatory content without any evidence against senior officials, those holding constitutional posts and their family members. He had ordered the cybercrime division to explore options, procedures to track and identify those posting such defamatory posts.

The judge had ordered the DGP to file a report on the action taken against such individuals who have been responsible for posting objectionable content against those hosting high offices.

“There is no set procedure to deal with the offenders posting objectionable and defamatory content on social media. If this is not dealt with an iron fist, it would cause serious problems in the coming times,” Justice Dhandapani said.&nbsp;

Months of political and economic turmoil in Sudan has severely damaged the health of the lions faced with shortages of food and medicine. Lions, victims of the political upheaval in Sudan, are starving.&nbsp;

Last week, WION did a special report to show how weak and wasted, malnourished the king of the jungle looks in Sudan.&nbsp;

After the special coverage by Wion and some online campaigns, there's new hope for the big cats at Al-Qurashi park zoo in Khartoum.

The online campaign with the hashtag #sudananimalrescue , was launched by Sudanese activist Osman Salih.&nbsp;

The images of the feeble cats created a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/social-media-in-uproar-after-emaciated-african-lion-images-go-viral-275561">stir on social media</a>. Following which a global welfare organisation - Four Paws, arrived to assess the condition of the lions. However, it was too late for one of the lions who recently died due to dehydration and lack of food.

According to a report published in British media, social networking giant Facebook has been dragged to the court by its employees for allegedly timing their breaks, even the time they take to go the toilet.&nbsp;

The news comes from Facebook's European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland wherein scores of former employees, working as content moderators, have alleged working in a strict environment with senior managers timing their toilet breaks and requiring them to log in and out every time they step away from their desks.

The employees in question worked as content moderators and looked for sensitive, illegal, pornographic or child abuse content.&nbsp;

In defence, a company spokesperson rubbished the news and said that no employee has any quota of work or any restriction on the breaks that they take. The official added that the system which is in place is to help plan "staffing schedules" and ensure that the employees get time for their training and "well-being breaks".&nbsp;

Chinese social media firm <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/founder-of-chinas-smartphone-maker-smartisan-barred-from-planes-trains-259693">ByteDance</a> has no plans to sell part or all of its TikTok app, the short video platform's head said on Tuesday, denying a media report which said the company was currently weighing options to do so due to US&nbsp;concerns.

Bloomberg reported on Monday that the company was considering a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/social-media-app-tiktok-removes-islamic-state-propaganda-videos-257458">TikTok</a> stake sale.

"From time to time you may read stories in the media that are not true. Today there is an inaccurate report claiming that ByteDance has considered selling part or all of TikTok," Alex Zhu said in an internal company note seen by Reuters.

"We went on the record saying it was not true, but they decided to publish it anyway. I want to assure you that we have had no discussions with potential buyers of TikTok, nor do we have any intention to."

A ByteDance spokeswoman declined to comment on the internal note but reiterated that there had "been no discussions about any partial or full sale of TikTok".

"These rumours are completely meritless," she added.

ByteDance has been seeking to ringfence TikTok, popular with teenagers in the United States, from much of its Chinese operations to assure US&nbsp;regulatory officials that personal data held by the app is stored securely in America and will not be compromised by Chinese authorities.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which reviews deals by foreign acquirers for potential national security risks, is looking into ByteDance's $1 billion purchase of social media app <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/tiktok-app-fined-in-us-for-illegally-gathering-childrens-data-200266">Musical.ly</a> in 2017 that laid the foundations for TikTok's rapid growth, Reuters has reported.

"We are looking into this issue, but believe this is likely information obtained before changes we made in the past few years to better protect people's information," a Facebook spokesperson said.

Comparitech said that security researcher Bob Diachenko spotted the database, which was openly accessible and contained Facebook users' names, user IDs and phone numbers.

The discovery was reported and the database was no longer available by Thursday, according to Comparitech.

The revelation of the exposed data comes as the social network strives to rebuild trust and alleviate concerns over the protection of people's information.

US regulators earlier this month said that British consultancy Cambridge Analytica -- at the centre of a massive scandal involving Facebook data hijacking &nbsp;-- deceived the social network's users about how it collected and handled their personal information.

The Federal Trade Commission said its investigation launched in March 2018 concluded that the now-defunct political consulting firm "engaged in deceptive practices to harvest personal information from tens of millions of Facebook users for voter profiling and targeting."

The FTC said the British firm, which worked on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, made "false and misleading" claims when it offered Facebook users a "personality quiz" -- stating it would not download names or any personally identifiable information.

The case created a firestorm over data protection when it was disclosed that Cambridge Analytica was able to create psychological profiles using data from millions of Facebook users.

Facebook's own investigation found that some data from 87 million users in the United States and elsewhere had been compromised by the firm, and claimed the practices violated the social network's terms of service.

Facebook paid a record $5 billion penalty early this year in a settlement with the regulator over mishandling users' private data.
