Elaborating on the current situation he told how the hospitals are currently seeing accident victims and cancer patients who need blood immediately. "We’re doing everything we can to increase blood donations to ensure every patient can receive medical treatments without delay, but we cannot do it without more donors. We need the help of the American people," he said.&nbsp;

The organisation has asked the country to help in every possible way.&nbsp;

Amid the ongoing pandemic, the Red Cross has experienced a decline of 10 per cent in the number of donors. There has also been a dip of 62 per cent in blood donation campaigns at schools and universities.&nbsp;

On her recent visit, she was told that the hospital had no blood to match her blood type. “The hospital came to me and they apologised, and they said, ‘We’re so sorry, our blood bank is depleted to the point where we don’t have anyone that matches with you,” said Kristen.&nbsp;

She further added, “It’s very scary, especially if you don’t know if the blood is coming because this is something that you need to live.”

Apart from blood donors, the Red Cross is also looking for volunteers to support critical blood collections. The volunteers have been in shortage too since the Delta variant hit the US.&nbsp;

American Airlines has had to cancel hundreds of flights this weekend due to staffing shortages triggered by weather-related disruptions, according to Flight Aware data on Saturday.

However, about 60 coal mines in China's largest coal-mining province, Shanxi, have been closed and several railway lines disrupted since Friday after heavy rain caused flooding. The Shanxi government has not disclosed how much production capacity those closed mines represent.

Meanwhile, high coal costs continue to pressure utilities. China's thermal coal futures rose 8 per cent&nbsp; to hit a daily upper trading limit shortly after trade started on Monday.

More than 70 per cent&nbsp; of China's coal-fired power plants are loss-making because of high coal costs, Citi analysts said in a note on Friday.

A shortage of foreign currency caused by a pandemic recession has unleashed the shortages of food, medicines and other essential items for the island nation of 21 million people.

The government declared a state of emergency over the food shortages on August 31 and imposed rationing.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka allows sharp rise in food prices to ease shortages

A new survey has revealed that staff shortages can now be seen in every sector, including farming and hospitality, in the UK. This is putting &nbsp;“severe pressure” on medium-sized businesses.

More than a quarter of the 500 firms said that the lack of staff was putting pressure on their operations. This contributed to the reduction of stock thus disrupting the supply chain.

Some firms have considered cutting production, while others have planned to raise prices.&nbsp;

As per the report, &nbsp;the knock-on effects for consumers could be “significant." The report has been released by accountancy and advisory firm BDO.

"In the event of no-deal disruption, if the government wants the food supply chain to work together to tackle likely shortages - to decide where to prioritise shipments - they will have to provide cast-iron written reassurances that competition law will not be strictly applied to those discussions," Rycroft said.

The reports, often produced in conjunction with the North Korean government, may not be able to focus on markets given the political sensitivity of inherently capitalist activity in a state which still outwardly professes to maintain a Soviet-style command economy, experts say.

&quot;Many people rely completely on the markets and off-the-books private farming for their food,&quot; said Sokeel Park of Liberty in North Korea, an organisation which aids defectors.

&quot;Corrupt officials will also siphon off government supplies and sell them for profit,&quot; said Park. &quot;This means international agencies&#39; regurgitation of Pyongyang&#39;s official food data should be taken with a pinch of salt&quot;.

In the years since the famine, farmers have also been granted increasing autonomy at local levels to proactively change crops, staving off the risk of food shortages, and reducing the reliance on imports.

North Korea&#39;s grain imports totalled $26.5 million in 2016, down from $139.2 million in 2012, according to the state-run Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency. January to June imports this year were just $10.6 million, albeit up sharply on the $3 million over the same period a year go.
