Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina Terms Yunus An 'Unaccountable Fascist'

Bangladesh caretaker government will hold general elections in late 2025 or early 2026, interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced on Monday (Dec 16).

Yunus, who heads the caretaker government, has been facing a lot of pressure to appoint the "chief advisor" for the country after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was toppled in a student-led uprising in August.

The 84-year-old leader has been heading a temporary administration, formed to tackle what he termed an "extremely tough" challenge to restoring democratic institutions in the South Asian nation.

Yunus was speaking in a televised address to mark Victory Day, the defeat of Pakistan in a war with India that led to the creation of Bangladesh in 1971.

“If political consensus dictates that we have to, and I repeat, ‘have to,’ complete the election with minimal reforms and an accurate voter list, it may be possible to hold the election by the end of 2025,”&nbsp;he said, as translated by Bloomberg news agency. Yunus spoke in Bangla language.

"Election dates could be fixed by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026," said Yunus.

Various commissions have been launched by Yunus to oversee the reforms and decide on an election date.

"Throughout, I have emphasised that reforms should take place first before the arrangements for an election. If the political parties agree to hold the election on an earlier date with minimum reforms, such as having a flawless voter list, the election could be held by the end of November," he said.

Yunus added that the elections will be delayed by a few months if the full list of electoral reforms is included.

“The task is more challenging this time because voters did not participate in the last three elections, and the voter list has not been verified for over 15 years," said Yunus, as reported by The Daily Star.

According to Yunus, the key reforms needed are an updated voter list which is a "complex" challenge that will require stripping of false names from lists.

Yunus said he dreamt of "ensuring 100 per cent voter turnout" in the elections.

"If this can be achieved, no government will ever dare to strip citizens of their voting rights again," he stated.

Bangladesh to go to polls in late 2025 or early 2026, announces Yunus on Victory Day

Dhaka, Bangladesh
An inquiry commission appointed by the Bangladesh interim government said on Saturday (Dec 14) that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina along with some high-ranking officials of her government were involved in the alleged incidents of enforced disappearances.
The five-member Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances submitted an interim report titled "Unfolding Truth" to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
In its report, the commission implicated Hasina's involvement in as many as 3,500 cases of enforced disappearances.
"The commission has found evidence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's involvement as the instructor in the incidents of enforced disappearances," the press wing of the office of Chief Adviser said in a statement.
It added that the deposed premier's defence adviser, Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre Major General Ziaul Ahsan, senior police officers Monirul Islam and Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, and several other senior officials were also found to be involved in those incidents.

The report presented evidence against the ousted Bangladesh PM, who fled the country during violent protests by the students in Dhaka.
The report further claimed that many high-ranking officials, including former military and police personnel believed to be involved, fled from the country after the fall of Hasina's Awami League party on August 5.
<h2>'Systematic design'</h2>
The commission told the interim government that the inquiries uncovered a "systematic design" that enabled incidents of enforced disappearances to occur unnoticed.
According to the statement, retired Supreme Court judge Mainul Islam Chowdhury, the chairman of the commission, told Yunus, "Individuals carrying out enforced disappearance or extrajudicial killing (even) lacked knowledge about victims."

It added that the police's elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which includes personnel from the army, navy, air force, and regular police, have also collaborated to detain, torture, and hold the victims in secret families. In light of this, the commission advised the abolishment of the RAB and called for either repealing or significantly amending the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.
According to the rights activist and commission member Sajjad Hossain, 1,676 complaints of enforced disappearances have been recorded so far, and 758 of them have been examined.
Moreover, out of these, 200 people, or 27 per cent of the victims, never returned.
Earlier at a press conference, the commission announced that they had found eight secret detention centres in the capital Dhaka and its outskirts.
<h2>'Need another year to complete inquiry'</h2>
The panel chairman told Yunus that they would share another interim report in March and would require at least another year to complete the scrutiny of all allegations they had received.
"You are doing a really very important job. We are ready to give you all kinds of support that you need," Yunus said, sharing support with the commission.
The report also called for creating a new law criminalising enforced disappearances.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh on Thursday ordered the authorities to ban the dissemination of all the “hate speeches” of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the media and on social networking platforms.

The order follows Hasina's recent speech, her first public address after fleeing Bangladesh four months ago, in which she mounted a stinging attack on the country's interim leader Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of perpetrating "genocide" and failing to protect minorities including Hindus.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported that a two-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder passed the order and directed the authorities to remove all the “hate speeches” of Hasina from social media and take necessary steps to stop their dissemination in future in all types of mass media.

Prosecutor Advocate Abdullah Al Noman told the news agency that the tribunal asked secretaries of the ICT Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to execute the order.

The prosecution earlier filed the petition, pleading to remove and restrict all types of hate speech and incitement by the ousted prime minister, which may intimidate the witnesses or victims or hamper the investigation.

Earlier, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim briefed the media in this regard, saying not only in Bangladesh, making hate speech is a criminal offence in every law and every country around the world.

"Sheikh Hasina has made speeches, where she was heard saying she got the license to kill 227 people as the same number of cases were filed against her. She was even heard giving threats to the victims and witnesses of the cases against her, through these speeches," Tamim said.

In remarks delivered virtually to her supporters at an event in New York, Hasina, presently living in India, also claimed that there were plans to kill her and her sister Sheikh Rehana just like their father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975.

Describing Yunus as "power-hungry", Hasina alleged that the places of worship in Bangladesh are under attack and the current dispensation has totally failed to deal with the situation.

Hasina was speaking to supporters of her Awami League party at the event organised on Sunday to mark "Bijoy Dibos" or Victory Day that falls on December 16.

Though Hasina made several statements in the last few months, it was her first public address after taking shelter, said an expert closely tracking developments in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh court bans circulation of Sheikh Hasina's ‘hate speeches'

Bangladesh interim government’s head, chief adviser Muhammad Yunus, has held the regime of Sheikh Hasina responsible for the destruction of “everything” in the country.

Yunus also said that general elections will be conducted in the country only after bringing constitutional and judicial reforms.

"The country's governance structure has been completely destroyed during Hasina's 15-year rule, and a huge task has fallen on us to rebuild it by restoring democracy, economic stability, and public trust," said Yunus while speaking with Nikkei Asia, as reported by PTI.
&nbsp;
The 84-year-old Nobel laureate added that comprehensive reforms need to be introduced by Bangladesh in economy, governance, bureaucracy, and judiciary before conducting elections.

Yunus further said that he will appeal to India to extradite Hasina after her trial in the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh comes to an end.

"Once the trial concludes and a verdict is reached, we will formally request India to hand her over," said Yunus.

He added that, as per an international law signed by both countries, "India would be obligated to comply."

The chief adviser further said that the concern raised by the Indian government regarding the safety of Hindus is not fact-based.

On Tuesday (December 3), Bangladesh had summoned the Indian envoy to its Foreign Office after announcing the suspension of consular services at its mission in the Indian city of Agartala, one day after the protesters breached the premises.

The relations between the two nations have been strained since Sheikh Hasina was ousted as the prime minister in August and took shelter in India, after which New Delhi raised concerns regarding the welfare of minorities in its neighbouring country. "Implementing these reforms will take time, as we are essentially building a new Bangladesh from scratch," Yunus said. He further ruled himself out from contesting future elections.

"No, I'm not a politician. I've always stayed away from politics. "Under her rule, democratic principles were entirely disregarded. She orchestrated sham elections with no voter participation for three consecutive terms, declaring herself and her party the winners unopposed and operated as a fascist ruler," Yunus added.

He further ruled himself out from contesting future elections. "No, I'm not a politician. I've always stayed away from politics. The country's governance structure has been completely destroyed during Hasina's 15-year rule, and a huge task has fallen on us to rebuild it by restoring democracy, economic stability, and public trust," he said, in the interview. "Under her rule, democratic principles were entirely disregarded. She orchestrated sham elections with no voter participation for three consecutive terms, declaring herself and her party the winners unopposed and operated as a fascist ruler," Yunus added. Yunus says 'Hasina destroyed everything' in Bangladesh, polls to be held only after reforms

Indian-origin British MP Priti Patel has raised alarm over the instability in Bangladesh following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure in August. Denouncing the ongoing violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, in a conversation with IANS, labelled the attacks as "senseless" and "horrendous."&nbsp;

Patel, a Conservative MP, called for urgent measures to safeguard religious freedoms in the country. She urged the Bangladeshi interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, to ensure robust action to protect religious minorities. &nbsp;

"These senseless acts of violence and the instability in Bangladesh are deeply concerning, and my thoughts are with all of those affected," said Patel.

"The targeting of religious places of worship is horrendous, and I know many Hindus will be feeling frightened and fearful, especially given the impact of previous waves of violence."

"The Bangladeshi government must ensure robust action is taken to protect life, prevent violence, and safeguard religious freedoms. I have called on the UK government to do all it can to support that work," she added.

<h2>UK monitoring the situation</h2>

The British government is closely monitoring escalating tensions in Bangladesh following recent attacks on the Hindu community and the arrest of religious leaders, Foreign Office Minister Catherine West told the House of Commons on Monday (Dec 2) during an urgent parliamentary session initiated by Labour MP Barry Gardiner. &nbsp;

West, the Minister for the Indo-Pacific, said she had received assurances from Bangladesh's interim government during a recent visit that minority communities, including Hindus, would be protected. She emphasised that the UK was one of the first countries with ministerial support to arrive in Bangladesh's Dhaka to speak with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. &nbsp;

"We are aware of the statement of concern from the Indian government following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a well-known Hindu leader, on sedition charges. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) desk is closely monitoring those developments," she said.

"The UK government will continue to monitor the situation, including making representations from this House, and will engage with the interim government in Bangladesh on the importance of freedom of religion or belief specifically as it affects the Hindu community," West added. &nbsp;

<h2>Rising tensions&nbsp;</h2>

Tensions in Bangladesh intensified after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5. Violence further escalated last week with the arrest of Hindu Priest Chinmoy Krishna Das. The Hindu community in the country has faced attacks on individuals, temples, and properties during the ongoing protests against Hasina's Awami League-led government. &nbsp;

Muhammad Yunus, who assumed leadership as Chief Adviser on August 8, has been unable to quell the unrest.

<h2>UK MPs voice concerns &nbsp;</h2>

Labour MP Gardiner, representing Brent North—a constituency with a significant Hindu population—described the situation as "clearly on a knife edge." He raised the concerns of the "large diaspora populations in the UK and large Hindu communities with strong links to the community in Bangladesh".&nbsp;

Conservative MP Bob Blackman, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for British Hindus, described the attacks as "ethnic cleansing of Hindus" and highlighted reports of priests being arrested, homes destroyed, and businesses looted. &nbsp;

"Priests have been arrested, and I understand that two more were arrested over the weekend, and 63 monks have been denied access to the country. The clear issue is an attempt at the ethnic cleansing of Hindus from Bangladesh… We want to hear not just words of piety, but absolute condemnation of what is going on."

‘He's involved in mass killings,’ Hasina blames Yunus for attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

The findings by interim leader Muhammad Yunus' caretaker government in Bangladesh claim that an average of $16 billion was allegedly embezzled from the country every year during former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's tenure.

"It will show us the economy we inherited after the July-August mass uprising," said Yunus as he received the report by Debapriya Bhattacharya, the chairman of the committee, he set up to find the status of Bangladesh's economy.

"Our blood curdles to know how they plundered the economy," Yunus said in a statement.&nbsp;

"The sad part is they looted the economy openly. And most of us could not summon courage to confront it," he added.

The Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime was toppled in the middle of a mass uprising, which started from the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement's quota reform campaign.

After three days, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took the office of the interim government's head as the chief adviser.

The students-led protests soon turned into a nationwide uprising, because of which Hasina was compelled to flee the country in secrecy and seek refuge in neighbouring India.

Under the committee's scanner were large projects, focusing on seven that had individual expenditure outlays exceeding $836 million, according to a Bloomberg report.&nbsp;

"The problem is deeper than what we have thought," Bhattacharya said, adding that the 400-page white paper will show "how crony capitalism gave birth to the oligarchs, who controlled the policy framing."&nbsp;

<h2>Bangladesh will seek extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India, says Yunus</h2>

In November, Yunus, in a televised speech, said that the country will soon seek former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's extradition from India, where she has been living since her Awami League government was ousted in August 2024.

"We will ensure justice for every killing during the July-August revolution. Efforts to prosecute those responsible are progressing well, and we will demand Hasina’s return from India to hold her accountable," Yunus said.

The leader said that the interim government would conduct a trial of those responsible for the deaths of students during the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, which ended Hasina's 15-year rule.

Bangladesh claims $16 billion siphoned every year during Sheikh Hasina's tenure: Report

Strongly condemning the "tortures" inflicted on common people by the interim government in Bangladesh that is headed by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, country's former prime inister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday called for immediate release of Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sanatan Jagaran Mancha and head of Pundarik Dham, who has been jailed in Chittagong.

"A top leader of the Sanatan religious community has been unjustly arrested, he must be released immediately," Hasina, who was forced to leave the country after the so-called 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement' in August, said in a statement.

As the shocking development continues to invite severe backlash from Hindus all over the world, Hasina spotlighted several incidents of persecution of members of minority communities that have been reported from across 52 districts in Bangladesh since her resignation on August 5, this year.

"A temple has been burnt in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and houses of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked, vandalized and looted and set on fire. Religious freedom and security of life and property of people of all communities should be ensured," she stated.

The Bangladesh Awami League (AL) president and daughter of the 'Father of the Nation' Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also mentioned in her statement about the death of a 32-year-old lawyer, Saiful Islam, in Chittagong court on Tuesday during the violence that took place after the arrest and jailing of Chinmoy Krishna Das.

"A lawyer has been killed in Chittagong, I strongly protest this killing, and those involved in this murder should be found and punished quickly. "Whoever they are, must be punished. If the Yunus government, which has seized power unconstitutionally, fails to punish these terrorists, it will also face punishment for human rights violations," said Hasina.

Ex-Bangladesh PM Hasina condemns Hindu monk's arrest, calls for immediate release

Iskcon, or International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is in sharp focus in Bangladesh after the arrest of one of its monks and a petition in the Dhaka High Court on banning it.

The court on Thursday (Nov. 28) rejected the plea to ban, filed by a&nbsp;lawyer who claimed that Iskcon is banned in several countries.

The ban was sought after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, an Iskcon priest who reportedly led rallies against attacks on Hindus in the country since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister. Hasina fled to India in August after being ousted in a student-led popular uprising against her regime.

Just hours into the Dhaka court's verdict, Iskcon Bangladesh dissociated itself from Chinmoy Krishna Das, saying he was recently expelled from the organisation.

Charu Chandra Das, the Iskcon Bangladesh general secretary, told reporters in Dhaka that it will not take any responsibility for the words or actions of Chinmoy Krishna Das.

<h2>What is Iskcon, the Hare Krishna movement?</h2>

Iskcon is a group devoted to the Hindu god Lord Krishna.

It was founded by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

According to Iskcon lore, Swami Prabhupada travelled in a cargo ship to New York at the ripe old age of 69 without a penny in his pocket, and spread the word on Krishna consciousness. In 1966, he founded Iskcon in the American megapolis, along with his students.

Often called the 'Hare Krishna' movement due to its main chants, Iskcon grew into a massive international organisation engaged in charitable and religious-spiritual activities.

In the heydays of 1970s counterculture in the US, several so-called hippies found their spiritual solace in organisations like Iskcon.

It expanded activities into several cities across the world and built temples in them.

Iskcon has a vast following in the western world, particularly in the US.

Iskcon is no stranger to controversy. It has been described in media accounts as a spiritual group and a cult, depending on the lens used to observe it.

To quote an article in Iskconnews.org, Iskcon "is banned in Singapore, cherished in South Africa, tolerated in the USA, allowed in Indonesia, secretive in China, loved in India, underground in the Middle East, registered in Pakistan, valued in Brazil, present in Bangladesh, esteemed in Guyana, new in Korea, accepted in Canada, recognised in Malaysia, valued in Australia, established in Russia, permitted in Japan, honoured in Nigeria, treasured in Italy, heard in Germany, and appreciated in the UK."

Iskcon followers, also called 'Hare Krishnas', are conspicuous with their tonsured heads&nbsp;and simple Indian-style dressing, often in white or saffron colours, chanting, beads and garlands, and sandalwood paste 'tilaks'.

They chant, sing, play instruments and dance to Krishna devotional songs, engage in charitable activities, besides selling Krishna-linked books and other merchandise like the Hindu text Bhagawat Gita.

In 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted the charitable work of Iskcon, including the help it did during the Covid pandemic that hit in 2020.

He was speaking after releasing a special commemorative coin of ₹125 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Swami Prabhupada

"When there was an earthquake in Kutch in 2001...Iskon had stepped forward to serve the people. Whenever the country experienced any calamity, whether it is the tragedy of Uttarakhand or the devastation of cyclones in Odisha and Bengal, Iskcon has worked as a support for the society," Modi said at the occasion.

As Modi recalled, Iskcon served food to vulnerable populations during Covid at their homes under its Food for Life initiative.

<h2>Why is Iskcon facing trouble in Bangladesh?</h2>

It is being accused of disruptive activities in Bangaldesh after Iskcon monk Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested.

Das had led rallies for Hindu rights in Chattogram and Rangpur to protest the recent attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh.

The Dhaka High Court had asked the country's attorney general to report the government’s actions concerning Iskcon.

On Thursday, the attorney general’s office submitted before the court that 33 people were arrested, three cases registered regarding the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif and Iskcon's activities.

Saiful Islam was allegedly killed on Tuesday in Chittagong city during protests over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das.

Bangladesh, where Hindus are a minority, has seen a charged political atmosphere since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.

The arrest of Sharma and others is the latest in this series of events. In the past few days, there have been protests in several parts of Bangladesh over the arrest of Krishna Das, and the targeting of Iskcon and other Hindu temples.

In his earlier submission to the court, Bangladesh Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman called Iskcon a 'religious fundamentalist organisation' that the government is already scrutinising.

Iskcon vice president Radha Raman Das expressed shock at being called a radical organisation by the Bangladesh attorney general.

"Even in Bangladesh, during floods, we served so many people. We were questioned why we did so, yet we did it. Eight billion people have been fed by Iskcon worldwide. And we are being called a radical terrorist organisation?," he was quoted as saying by India Today website.

While urging world leaders to speak on the issue, Raman Das said the situation is 'out of hand' in Bangladesh and hoped things would improve when Donald Trump takes charge as US president.

Iskcon, or International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is in sharp focus in Bangladesh after the arrest of one of its monks and a petition in the Dhaka High Court on banning it.

Iskcon, or International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is in sharp focus in Bangladesh after the arrest of one of its monks and a petition in the Dhaka High Court on banning it. The court on Thursday (Nov. 28) rejected the plea to ban, filed by a lawyer who claimed that Iskcon is banned in several countries. WATCH: Bangladesh High Court Rejects ISKCON Ban Plea Amid Priest’s Arrest | World DNA | WION × Just hours into the Dhaka court's verdict, Iskcon Bangladesh dissociated itself from Chinmoy Krishna Das, saying he was recently expelled from the organisation. Charu Chandra Das, the Iskcon Bangladesh general secretary, told reporters in Dhaka that it will not take any responsibility for the words or actions of Chinmoy Krishna Das. What is Iskcon, the Hare Krishna movement? Iskcon is a group devoted to the Hindu god Lord Krishna. It was founded by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. According to Iskcon lore, Swami Prabhupada travelled in a cargo ship to New York at the ripe old age of 69 without a penny in his pocket, and spread the word on Krishna consciousness. In 1966, he founded Iskcon in the American megapolis, along with his students. Iskcon followers, also called 'Hare Krishnas', are conspicuous with their tonsured heads and simple Indian-style dressing, often in white or saffron colours, chanting, beads and garlands, and sandalwood paste 'tilaks'. He was speaking after releasing a special commemorative coin of ₹125 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Swami Prabhupada "When there was an earthquake in Kutch in 2001...Iskon had stepped forward to serve the people. Why is Iskcon facing trouble in Bangladesh? It is being accused of disruptive activities in Bangaldesh after Iskcon monk Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested. Das had led rallies for Hindu rights in Chattogram and Rangpur to protest the recent attacks against Hindus in Bangladesh. The Dhaka High Court had asked the country's attorney general to report the government’s actions concerning Iskcon. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s letter to former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked significant controversy, drawing political debate and scrutiny over its contents and implications.

Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's coalition, Jatiya Party, central office in Dhaka, has been set on fire after clashes on Thursday night. The office was partly damaged, the witnesses said. The Jatiya Party, founded by late President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, was a part of the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance and participated previous three general elections despite the major party BNP boycotted the elections. Protesters against Sheikh Hasina were angered when the Jatiya Party announced that it would hold a rally in Dhaka on Saturday. Clashes erupted when protesters carrying the Chhatra Sramik Janata banner marched with a torch procession in front of the Jatiya Party's central office in the Kakrail area, the heart of the capital Dhaka. Also read: Blast in Pak's Balochistan: Death toll rises to seven, CM condemns explosion The fire service went to the spot and extinguished the fire. When a large number of protestors went in front of the Jatiya Party left the office. Protesters vandalized Jatiya Party offices, pulled down signboards and smeared ink on party founder Ershad's picture on the wall, the witnesses said. Police and Army were deployed in front of the Jatiya Party office. "We were passing in front of the Jatiya Party office with a torch procession. At that time, terrorists of the Jatiya Party threw bricks at our procession from the roof of the Jatiya Party office", said Shakiluzzaman, a leader of Gono Audhikar Parishad, a political party that actively participated in the movement against Sheikh Hasina. "Jatiya Party terrorists themselves set fire to their office and escaped. Jatya Party acted as a proxy of the fascist Awami League in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections", Shakiluzzaman said. "We the students, workers and citizens have declared that we will not allow Jatiya Party to hold any rally", he further said. No comment was immediately found from the Jatiya Party but they are likely to express their reaction officially later on Friday. Two months ago, s student-led movement ousted Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, after weeks of protests and clashes that killed over 600. Hasina, 76, fled to India on August 5 and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed. Bangladesh's Interim Government To Turn Former PM's Palace To Museum

A writ petition filed in a high court in Bangladesh seeking a ban on ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League and several other parties was withdrawn on Tuesday (Oct 29).

Leaders of the anti-discrimination students' movement, which led to the ouster of Hasina's 15-year regime on August 5, on Monday in a petition in Dhaka High Court sought the court's directions to prevent the Awami League and 10 other parties from conducting political activities in the country.

Court officials and lawyers said three top leaders or coordinators of the movement – Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah and Hasibul Islam – decided not to proceed with the petition that also questioned the past three general elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024 which installed the Hasina-led Awami League to power

The elections were staged amid allegations of massive vote manipulation or boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia and several other parties.

The movement leaders, however, preferred not to proceed with the second writ either that questioned the legitimacy of these three parliamentary elections.

The two writs, listed by a two-member high court bench for hearing on Tuesday, were withdrawn as the proceedings began in the morning.

The petitioners' lawyers informed the bench that their clients would not proceed with the writs.

The bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Shikdar Mahmudur Raji subsequently ordered the writs be removed from the list.

Alongside Awami League, the writ petition was filed against Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party (Manju), Ganatantri Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist-Leninist) (Barua), and Workers Party of Bangladesh.

In response to their inclusion in the petition, the LDP demanded an apology from the petitioners.

The CPB said they might have been mentioned out of a misunderstanding, and the Jatiya Party (Ershad) said they would address the matter through legal means.

The right-wing LDP and left-wing CPB were harsh critics of the Awami League regime and did not take part in the elections.

The BNP, which has appeared as the major political force in Bangladesh politics following Hasina's ouster, however, said they opposed a ban on any political party for inclusiveness in elections. Meanwhile, the interim government on Monday evening said it had yet not decided upon banning any political party.

A writ petition filed in a high court in Bangladesh seeking a ban on ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League and several other parties was withdrawn on Tuesday (Oct 29).

Court officials and lawyers said three top leaders or coordinators of the movement – Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah and Hasibul Islam – decided not to proceed with the petition that also questioned the past three general elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024 which installed the Hasina-led Awami League to power The elections were staged amid allegations of massive vote manipulation or boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia and several other parties. Also Read | Who is Sheikh Naim Qassem, Hezbollah’s new white-turbaned chief? Bangladesh Bans Student Wing Of Former PM Sheikh Hasina's Party

Bangladesh’s interim government led by Muhammad Yunus said on Wednesday (Oct 23) that it has imposed a ban on the student wing of Bangladesh Awami League, the party of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The country’s interior ministry issued a gazette notification earlier, saying the Chhatra League will be declared a terror organisation under Clause 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009.

The government said the move has been taken in view of the organisation’s alleged involvement in the killings and destructive and terrorist activities, both directly and through incitement, during the July riots.

Several organisations, seen as opponents of Hasina, had called on the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, to impose&nbsp;a ban on the student wing. One such organisation was the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which accused the Chhatra League of committing atrocities during riots that eventually led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. Anti-Discrimination Student Movement even issued an ultimatum to the government, which was supposed to end on Thursday (Oct 24).

<h2>Allegations against Chhatra League</h2>

The student wing has been accused of committing serious crimes, including murder, rape, attack and extortion, during the rule of Awami League.

There are allegations that they even set up so-called torture-rooms at different halls of public universities. Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, had also been lobbying to ban the Chhatra League for quite some time now.

The erstwhile Awami League government led by Hasina had imposed a ban on Jamaat on August 1, 2024, accusing the Islamist party as a “militant and terrorist” organisation. The government had then blamed Jamaat's student wing for inciting chaos over a quota system for government jobs.

The Jamaat had opposed Bangladesh's 1971 independence from Pakistan and sided with the Pakistani troops during the Liberation War.

The Jamaat, founded in 1941 in undivided India, was first banned in 1972, the year Bangladesh framed its Constitution, which disbanded the functioning of any association, union or political party based on religion.
