Bangladesh will take 'necessary steps' to secure the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India to try her on charges of mass killings, the newly appointed chief prosecutor of the country's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Mohammad Taijul, said on Sunday (Sep 8).

Hasina has sought refuge in the northern Indian city of Ghaziabad ever since fleeing Bangladesh as the demonstrators took over her official residence in the wake of the students' protest last month.

“Necessary steps will be taken to bring former prime minister Hasina back under the extradition treaty with India to try her on charges of mass killings during the student-led protests in July and August,” Taijul was quoted as saying by The Daily Star newspaper.

"We will file an application with the International Crimes Tribunal, when it resumes functions, to issue arrest warrants against all the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the cases filed for mass killing and crimes against humanity," he added.

Last month, Bangladesh's ICT launched an investigation against Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that took place between July and August during the peak of the students' protest against the 'unjust' quota system.

Taijul added that information, documents and evidence against the accused persons will be collected from across the country and compiled, examined and placed properly before the tribunal.

'Necessary steps will be taken': New Bangladesh government seeks extradition of ex-PM Sheikh Hasina from India

#Gravitas | In an interview from his official residence in Dhaka, Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim Bangladesh government criticized former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for making political statements while in India. In an interview with news agency PTI from Dhaka, Yunus said that Hasina’s remarks coming from India is an "unfriendly gesture." 'If India wants to keep Hasina she has to keep quiet': Yunus "If India wants to keep her until the time Bangladesh (government) wants her back, the condition would be that she has to keep quiet," Yunus said on Thursday (Sep 5). He added, "No one is comfortable with her stance there in India because we want her back to try her. She is there in India and at times she is talking, which is problematic. Had she been quiet, we would have forgotten it; people would have also forgotten it as she would have been in her own world. But sitting in India, she is speaking and giving instructions. No one likes it. It is not good for us or for India. There is discomfort regarding it." On August 13, Hasina issued a statement saying that those responsible for "killings and vandalism" during anti-government protests must be "identified and punished." Need to improve India-Bangladesh ties Yunus also emphasised the need for India and Bangladesh to work together to improve their relationship, "which is now at a low". He said that while Dhaka values its ties with New Delhi, it is important for India to shift away from the perception that frames all political parties other than the Awami League as Islamist. "The way forward is for India to come out of the narrative. The narrative is that everybody is Islamist, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is Islamist, and everyone else is Islamist and will make this country into Afghanistan. And Bangladesh is in safe hands with Sheikh Hasina at the helm only," Yunus said. Need to reassess Adani's electricity deal Looking ahead to relations with India, Yunus pointed out that there is a call to reassess certain deals, including those related to transit and the Adani electricity deal. "Everybody is saying that it is needed. We will see what is on paper and, second, what is actually happening on the ground. I can't answer it specifically. If there is any need to review, we will then raise questions about it," he said. India-Bangladesh ties after Sheikh Hasina: BNP leader wants all agreements signed under Hasina cancelled

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has had nine more cases filed against her, increasing the total number of cases to 31. Watch in for more details!

Bangladesh: Nine new cases registered against ousted PM Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh's interim government revoked the diplomatic passport of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina on Thursday, after she fled to India earlier this month following a student-led uprising.

The move to cancel Hasina's documents leaves the former autocratic leader in potential limbo, and comes on the same day that a United Nations team arrived in Dhaka to assess whether to investigate alleged human rights violations.

More than 450 people were killed -- many by police fire -- during the weeks leading up to Hasina's ouster, as crowds stormed her official residence in Dhaka and ended her iron-fisted 15-year rule.

The interior ministry said in a statement that Hasina's passport and those belonging to former government ministers and ex-lawmakers no longer in their posts "have to be revoked".

It also poses a diplomatic dilemma for Hasina's current host, regional powerhouse India.

Disproportionate force

Hasina, who fled to an airbase near India's capital, New Delhi, had been a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose government preferred her over her rivals from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which it saw as closer to conservative Islamist groups.

While India is hosting Hasina, Modi has also offered his support to the new Bangladeshi leader, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is heading the caretaker administration.

"The former prime minister, her advisers, the former cabinet and all members of the dissolved national assembly were eligible for diplomatic passports by virtue of the positions they held," Dhaka's home ministry said in a statement.

"If they have been removed or retired from their posts, their and their spouses' diplomatic passports have to be revoked."

Dhaka's new authorities said that Hasina, and other former top officials during her tenure, could apply for a standard passport, but that those documents were contingent on approval.

Disproportionate force Hasina, who fled to an airbase near India's capital, New Delhi, had been a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose government preferred her over her rivals from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which it saw as closer to conservative Islamist groups. "If they have been removed or retired from their posts, their and their spouses' diplomatic passports have to be revoked." Dhaka's new authorities said that Hasina, and other former top officials during her tenure, could apply for a standard passport, but that those documents were contingent on approval. "When the aforementioned people apply afresh for ordinary passports, two security agencies have to clear their application for their passports to be issued," the ministry added. Hasina's government was accused of widespread abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killing of political opponents. A three square kilometre stretch of land, St Martin's Island in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, has emerged as the point of focus in the ongoing Bangladesh crisis that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government earlier this week.

The ousted former Bangladeshi prime minister claimed that she could have remained in power had she given away St Martin's to the United States.

"I could have remained in power if I had left St. Martin and the Bay of Bengal to America," she said in a message conveyed to her Awami League supporters.

This is not the first time that Hasina has claimed that she could stay in power by allowing Bangladesh to give up St. Martin's Island to the United States.

Ahead of the elections in Bangladesh in January this year, Hasina had claimed that "a white man" had offered her a smooth return to power in exchange for an airbase.

Last year, while addressing a press conference in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina said, "I don’t want to return to power by leasing out St Martin’s Island."

For several years, the rumours of Washington wanting to control the island have been doing the rounds in and beyond Dhaka's corridors of power.

Notably, it is claimed that the US intends to build an air base on the small island, located just eight kilometres from Myanmar.

Potential US airbase at St Martin's Island: What would it mean?

The biggest advantage for a country with a military base at St. Martin's would be a strategic oversight in and around the Strait of Malacca.

The Chinese use this maritime region mainly for their transportation.

Notably, the Chinese are building a port at Bangladesh's Cox Bazaar. For any country other than China with a post at St. Martin's, this would mean keeping an eye over Chinese investments in the Bay of Bengal, a former Indian ambassador with a deep understanding of the affairs of the Indian subcontinent told WION.

"Also you can surveil the trade in the region. That potential surveillance can be focused not just about what Chinese are doing but also on others in the region," the ambassador said.

‘India not fulfilling commitment…,’ BNP wants Hasina extradited, new case filed against ex-PM

Bangladesh's interim government chief Muhammad Yunus on Sunday (August 18) did not provide any timeline for the promised "free and fair elections" in the South Asian nation and instead emphasised that he has the "mandate" of carrying out "vital reforms" in the country.

The Nobel laureate accused deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of destroying every institution of the country in her efforts to stay in power. He repeated the promise of holding a free, fair, and participatory election but did not give any timeline for the same.

Deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned to power in January elections widely denounced by the Opposition for its alleged lack of participatory nature alongside purported high-handedness of government functionaries from Hasina's Awami League party.

Hasina, 76, resigned and fled to India on August 5 following a massive protest by students against a controversial quota system in government jobs.

After Hasina's ouster, 84-year-old Yunus took oath as the Chief Adviser of the interim government on August 8.

The chief adviser said elections were rigged blatantly and generations of young people grew up without exercising their voting rights.

“Banks were robbed with full political patronisation. And the State coffer was plundered by abusing power,” Yunus said, adding that they will also make sincere efforts to promote national reconciliation.

"In their efforts to stay in power, Sheikh Hasina's dictatorship destroyed every institution of the country. The judiciary was broken. Democratic rights were suppressed through a brutal decade-and-a-half long crackdown," United News of Bangladesh quoted Yunus as saying through his Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Yunus also briefed diplomats stationed in Dhaka for the first time since the interim government's inception.

Yunus said he took over a country that was in many ways a complete mess. He added that the top priority of the interim government would be to bring the law and order situation under control.

"We will be close to normalcy within a short period, with the unwavering support of our people and patriotic armed forces," Yunus said.

He sought the international community’s support to rebuild Bangladesh. On the Rohingya issue, he said the interim government will continue to support the million-plus Rohingya people sheltered in Bangladesh.
