<p>Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi student representatives expressed gratitude to China in the meeting, noting that&nbsp;Beijing sent an emergency medical rescue team to help treat those injured during the protests.</p>

<h2><strong>The unrest in Bangladesh that led to Sheikh Hasina's ouster</strong></h2>

<p>More than 1,000 people were killed in clashes that began as a student movement against public-sector job quotas in July but escalated into a wider anti-government uprising - the bloodiest period in Bangladesh's independent history.</p>

<p>The unrest led to Sheikh Hasina resigning from the post of prime minister and fleeing the country in early August. Following Hasina's ouster, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh which is being led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two student protesters-&nbsp;Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, were appointed in August to serve in the interim government.</p>

<p>The SCMP report said that neither Islam nor Mahmud appeared in photos from Thursday’s meeting published by the Chinese embassy, though the former met Yao earlier this month.</p>

<p>Bangladesh will take 'necessary steps' to secure the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India to try her on charges of mass killings, the newly appointed&nbsp;chief prosecutor of the country's&nbsp;International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Mohammad Taijul, said on Sunday (Sep 8).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hasina has sought refuge in the northern Indian city of Ghaziabad ever since fleeing Bangladesh as the demonstrators&nbsp;took over her official residence in the wake of the students' protest last month.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Necessary steps will be taken to bring former prime minister Hasina back under the extradition treaty with India to try her on charges of mass killings during the student-led protests in July and August,”&nbsp;Taijul was quoted as saying by The Daily Star newspaper.</p>

<p>"We will file an application with the International Crimes Tribunal, when it resumes functions, to issue arrest warrants against all the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the cases filed for mass killing and crimes against humanity," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month,&nbsp;Bangladesh's ICT launched an investigation against Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that took place between July and August during the peak of the students' protest against the 'unjust' quota system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taijul added that information, documents and evidence against the accused persons will be collected from across the country and compiled, examined and placed properly before the tribunal.&nbsp;</p>

Yunus said Hasina "should keep quiet"&nbsp;and asked New Delhi to move beyond the “narrative” that every political party other than Hasina’s Awami League is “Islamist”.</p>

<p>Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, objected to&nbsp;former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's political comments made while in India. In an interview with news agency PTI from Dhaka, Yunus said that Hasina’s remarks coming from India is an "unfriendly gesture."</p>

<h2>'If India wants to keep Hasina she has to keep quiet': Yunus</h2>

<p>"If India wants to keep her until the time Bangladesh (government) wants her back, the condition would be that she has to keep quiet," Yunus said on Thursday (Sep 5).</p>

<p>He added, "No one is comfortable with her stance there in India because we want her back to try her. She is there in India and at times she is talking, which is problematic. Had she been quiet, we would have forgotten it; people would have also forgotten it as she would have been in her own world. But sitting in India, she is speaking and giving instructions. No one likes it. It is not good for us or for India. There is discomfort regarding it."</p>

<p>On August 13, Hasina issued a statement saying that those responsible for "killings and vandalism" during anti-government protests must be "identified and punished."</p>

<h2>Need to improve India-Bangladesh ties</h2>

<p>Yunus also emphasised the need for India and Bangladesh to work together to improve their relationship, "which is now at a low".</p>

<p>He said that while Dhaka&nbsp;values its ties with New Delhi, it is important for India to shift away from the perception that frames all political parties other than the Awami League as Islamist.</p>

<p>"The way forward is for India to come out of the narrative. The narrative is that everybody is Islamist, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is Islamist, and everyone else is Islamist and will make this country into Afghanistan. And Bangladesh is in safe hands with Sheikh Hasina at the helm only," Yunus said.</p>

<h2>Need to reassess Adani's electricity deal</h2>

<p>Looking ahead to relations with India, Yunus pointed out that there is a call to reassess certain deals, including those related to transit and the Adani electricity deal.</p>

<p>"Everybody is saying that it is needed. We will see what is on paper and, second, what is actually happening on the ground. I can't answer it specifically. If there is any need to review, we will then raise questions about it," he said.</p>
