US President-elect Donald Trump demanded that Republican lawmakers allow him to appoint key officials without a Senate confirmation vote. Watch this report for more details!

Donald Trump Eyes Bypass of Senate Confirmation Vote

US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (Nov 10) demanded that Republican senators allow him to bypass the Senate confirmation process for key appointments. This, as per reports, aims to sidestep Democratic opposition and maintain momentum for his administration.

Trump made the demand on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), stressing that any Republican senator vying for leadership must support the use of recess appointments to confirm his nominations without a Senate vote.

What is the usual process?

Under the US Constitution, the Senate typically holds the power to approve presidential appointments for senior positions, such as cabinet roles and judicial appointments. However, a provision allows presidents to bypass this process if the Senate is in an extended recess.

Historically, the Senate has used various tactics to avoid prolonged recesses to protect its influence over such nominations, reports AFP.

Trump, referring to the delays during his first term, stated that the Senate must avoid lengthy confirmation processes that could take years. He argued that “Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the United States Senate must agree to Recess Appointments (in the Senate!), without which we will not be able to get people confirmed in a timely manner.”

The Pakistan Senate has approved the 26th constitution amendment bill in favor with two- third of the majority, four members voted against it. The motion was carried with a two-third majority. Watch to know more on this.

Pakistan's Senate Passes Constitutional Amendment Bill

Kenya's senate voted to dismiss Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office by impeachment on five out of 11 charges levelled against him on Thursday, in an unprecedented move that risks pushing the country towards a political crisis.

The National Assembly voted last week to impeach Gachagua, who helped President William Ruto win an election two years ago but has been assailed by allies of the president over alleged disloyalty and a series of provocative public comments.

Fifty-four out of 67 senators voted to dismiss Gachagua on the first count of "gross violation of the constitution", more than the two-thirds majority required under the law, making him the first Kenyan president or deputy president forced from office by impeachment.

"Accordingly, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua... ceases to hold office," said Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

The process, however, is unlikely to stop there. Gachagua has filed several petitions challenging the push to oust him, and the chief justice has appointed a panel of three judges to examine them.

Gachagua, who has denied the allegations, had been due to defend himself against the charges in the Senate on Thursday afternoon ahead of the vote.

When he failed to show up, his lawyer Paul Muite said the deputy president had been hospitalised with intense chest pains, urging the Senate to pause proceedings for a couple of days.

But the senate declined to do so, prompting Gachagua's legal team to leave the chambers in protest.

Dan Gikonyo, a doctor treating Gachagua, told reporters the deputy president was admitted to a Nairobi hospital with heart trouble on Thursday afternoon, but was now stable and would likely have to remain in hospital for 24-72 hours.

Some senators questioned the decision to proceed with the vote, despite Gachagua's absence.

"We are to try a man in hospital because the only crime that Rigathi Gachagua has committed is a political crime, so he has to be removed out of the way, whatever it will take," said Senator John Methu.

But Senator Moses Otieno Kajwang defended the move to impeach Gachagua, saying, "we must drain the swamp".

RISKS FOR RUTO

Ruto, who has fallen out with Gachagua in recent months, has not commented on the proceedings, but could face a public backlash following the impeachment, political analysts said.

Many Kenyans view the impeachment process as politically motivated, and a distraction from the aftermath of the deadly anti-tax protests in June and July that exposed deep discontent with government policies and alleged corruption.

The hearings, which have involved in-depth scrutiny of Gachagua's finances, could boomerang back at Ruto, said Karuti Kanyinga, a professor at the University of Nairobi's Institute for Development Studies.

"We are going to hear people demanding that the same thing that has been done on Gachagua be done to the president," Kanyinga said.

Gachagua, who has previously called the impeachment process a political lynching based on falsehoods, had been due to respond to a litany of accusations laid out on Wednesday by lawmaker Mwengi Mutuse, who accused him of inciting ethnic hatred.

Mutuse also accused Gachagua of acquiring properties worth over $40 million since becoming deputy president, despite reporting a net worth of only around $6 million before entering office.

Elisha Ongoya, a member of Gachagua's legal team, said the allegations lacked evidence and were based on speculation.

Columbia University's President Nemat Minouche Shafik has come under scrutiny over her handling of recent protests on campus, especially the controversy stemmed from her decision to involve the New York police in dismantling a protest encampment.

The resolution was passed by 62 votes in favour, 14 votes against, and 3 abstentions. Shafik's move sparked outrage among students, faculty, and observers after 100 were arrested and the tents from the campus lawn were removed.

The resolution calls on the University to address issues of endangerment of academic freedom, breaches of student and faculty privacy, and violations of shared governance principles. It suggests that the Senate establish a task force, overseen by the Executive Committee and investigate and deliver recommendations for subsequent senate measures.

However, protesters swiftly reassembled the encampment and limited the university's options for quelling the demonstrations. Similar protests have erupted across the country, from California to Boston, with students demanding divestment from companies linked to Israel's military.

The US Senate on Wednesday (April 17) quickly dismissed two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, calling them "unconstitutional."

The trial brought to an end a months-long plan to take action against the secretary for the way he is handling the southern border.

The trial against top border security official Mayorkas, who has been a target of Republican criticism over the way he is handling southern border and immigration policy, continued for only three hours after senators were sworn in as jurors.

In the Senate, a 51-member Democratic majority voted to dismiss the two charges as unconstitutional, rejecting Republican members' objections.

In the Senate, 51 people voted to reject the impeachment charges, as Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted “present.” After this, the Senate then voted to end the trial "sine die," which means for good in, less than 3 1/2 hours after it started.

"Once and for all, the Senate has rightly voted down this baseless impeachment that even conservative legal scholars said was unconstitutional," said Ian Sams, a White House spokesperson.

It's a race against time for the Democrats in the US Senate as they need to pass a $1.2 trillion- funding bill before 400 am GMT or 9:30 am Indian Standard Time today. Earlier the Republican held US House of Representatives passed the bill 286 against 134.

US: Funding bill seeks senate nod

The United States Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, on Wednesday (Mar 6) said he would support his party’s frontrunner Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election. This comes more than three years after the Senator for the US state of Kentucky blamed the former president for the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

‘He will have my support’

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” said McConnell in a statement.

He added, “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.” The Senate minority leader also highlighted the “great things” he and Trump had accomplished during his presidency, including picking three conservative justices for the Supreme Court.

“I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defence against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offence geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people,” said McConnell.

The Senate minority leader’s endorsement reportedly came minutes after Nikki Haley, the last remaining rival for the Republican nomination against Trump, announced that she was ending her campaign.

Over the past few months, when asked if he would back Trump, McConnell had dodged the question saying that he would endorse the party’s eventual nominee.

On Super Tuesday (Mar 5), 15 states held their primaries which account for more than a third of the overall GOP primary delegate count. The former US president won in 14 of the 15 states, including California and Texas, which have the most delegates.

Why now?

It is worth noting that even before the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol, relations between McConnell and Trump were not smooth, but they became worse after.

The Senate minority leader and the former president have not reportedly spoken since December 2020. The endorsement came after “lengthy discussions” over the past few months between Chris LaCivita from the Trump campaign and longtime McConnell confidant Josh Holmes, according to a report by CNN.

“There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it,” McConnell had said during a speech on the Senate floor after Trump was acquitted in the Senate impeachment trial.

He added, “The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president.”

Last month, McConnell announced that he would step down as leader of the Republican Party in the Senate in November. The 82-year-old is the longest-serving Senate leader in history.

WATCH | Nikki Haley quits US presidential race, paving way for Trump-Biden rematch “I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defence against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offence geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people,” said McConnell. It is worth noting that even before the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol, relations between McConnell and Trump were not smooth, but they became worse after. In that year, a coalition of Democrats in southern US states opted to front-load the presidential primary process following Republican President Ronald Reagan's decisive victory four years prior against Democratic candidate Walter Mondale. Their strategy involved holding simultaneous primaries early in the election cycle, aiming to exert greater influence on their party's selection and ensure the nominee's viability in the American South.

Despite the unsuccessful outcome of the 1988 initiative, Super Tuesday persists as the day when a majority of US states conduct their primary elections.

What is the significance of Super Tuesday?

The significance of Super Tuesday lies in the allocation of approximately a third of each party's delegates, crucial in determining their respective presidential nominees.

A robust performance on this day can inject vitality into a presidential campaign, attracting increased financial support and building momentum. Conversely, a lacklustre outcome can halt a campaign's progress abruptly.

Caitlin Jewitt, an associate professor of political science at Virginia Tech, highlighted the importance of robust funding, organisation and name recognition for candidates to fare well across the diverse states participating on Super Tuesday. The simultaneous nature of the contests intensifies the need for candidates to exhibit strength on multiple fronts.

In the 2020 Democratic race, for instance, Joe Biden's impressive showing on Super Tuesday, securing victories in 10 states, propelled him into a two-man competition with Senator Bernie Sanders.

This demonstrates the potential for candidates to gain significant momentum from a successful performance on Super Tuesday.

What anticipations can be made for this year's presidential primary contests?

A lackluster performance in the Super Tuesday contests could spell the end of Haley's 2024 Republican nomination campaign, as polls consistently indicate her trailing behind Trump in all Republican competitions on that crucial day. Caitlin Jewitt remarked that the races might not be as "super" this year due to their one-sided nature.

Despite its diminished importance in this election cycle, Super Tuesday remains significant for Haley, possibly marking her last opportunity to make an impact.

Overall, expectations are relatively clear, with Joe Biden and Donald Trump anticipated securing their respective nominations, minimizing the likelihood of surprises on Super Tuesday.

Haley, who has faced substantial defeats against Trump in earlier state contests, has expressed her intent to persist in the race at least until Super Tuesday. However, her plans beyond that point remain uncertain, stating, "I'm not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden" after a primary loss in South Carolina on February 24.

When can we expect the results for Super Tuesday?

The results will begin to trickle in once polls close in each state and territory. Typically, that is around 7pm local time or later.

Current standing: Biden, Trump and Haley

As of Monday (March 4), Joe Biden is leading the Democratic primary with 206 delegates. While Donald Trump is leading the GOP primaries with 273 delegates, while Nikki Haley is trailing in the second place with 43 delegates.

Haley recently notched her first primary win in Washington DC.

Trump, who was earlier excluded from Colorado's ballot under a constitutional provision involving insurrection for inciting and supporting the 2021 Capitol Hill riots, has been reinstated by the US Supreme Court.

"We conclude that states may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But states have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the presidency," stated the court in an unsigned opinion.

The vote took place before sunrise after eight hardline Republican opponents of sending more aid to Ukraine held an overnight marathon of speeches which went on for more than six hours. Notably, 22 Republican Senators voted in favour of the bill.

The bill also comes after President Joe Biden has been urging Congress for months now to pass the critical foreign aid bill, the lion’s share of which will help Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.

“It's certainly been years, perhaps decades, since the Senate has passed a bill that so greatly impacts not just our national security, not just the security of our allies, but the security of western democracy,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The legislation includes around $60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel in its war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas and nearly $5 billion to support US partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and deter aggression by China.

The bill also includes a little over $9 billion in humanitarian assistance to civilians in Ukraine, Gaza and the West Bank, and other conflict zones across the world.

Why would the bill fail in the House?

The bill requires the approval of both chambers of Congress before Biden can sign it into law. However, it is unclear whether Johnson would even hold a vote on the measure given that most House Republicans are opposed to further aid to Ukraine.

On Monday (Feb 12), as the $95 billion foreign aid package was still being formulated in the Senate, Johnson indicated that the Republican-led chamber would not take it up as it does not include provisions to address the record flow of migrants across the US-Mexico border.

“In the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters,” said Johnson, in a statement late Monday.

It added, “America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo.” This Speaker has previously suggested that the House could split the legislation into separate bills.

Less than a week ago, the $118 billion bipartisan bill that combined an overhaul of the country’s immigration policy and security measures at its border with Mexico with a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, was rejected by the members of Johnson’s own party in the Senate.

Senate Republicans were expected to block the bill amid opposition and pressure from former US President Donald Trump and members of their own party in the House of Representatives.

US Senate advances $95 billion aid package, Republican-led house to take it up next

A $95.34 billion bill that includes aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan advanced in the US Senate on Thursday after Republicans blocked compromise legislation that included a long-sought overhaul of immigration policy.

Senators backed a procedural motion by 67-32, exceeding the 60-vote threshold to advance the bill. Seventeen Republicans voted in favour, in a surprising shift after they blocked the broader bill on Wednesday.

"This is a good first step. This bill is essential for our national security, for the security of our friends in Ukraine, in Israel, for humanitarian aid for innocent civilians in Gaza, and for Taiwan," Schumer said in the Senate after the vote.

There was no immediate word on when the 100-member chamber would consider final passage, as some senators said they expected to remain in session during the weekend if necessary.

"We are going to keep working on this bill until the job is done," Schumer said.

The Democratic-led Senate took up the security aid bill after Republicans on Wednesday blocked a broader measure that also included reforms of border security and immigration policy that a bipartisan group of senators had negotiated for months.

The security aid bill includes $61 billion for Ukraine as it battles a Russian invasion, $14 billion for Israel in its war against Hamas and $4.83 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and deter aggression by China.

It also would provide $9.15 billion in humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, Ukraine and other populations in conflict zones around the globe.

The Senate is expected to take days to agree on a final version of the security aid package, with some Republicans continuing to push for amendments. Supporters of Ukraine have been struggling for much of the past year to find a way to send more money to help Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's government.

Even if the aid bill eventually passes the Senate, it faces uncertainty in the House of Representatives. Dozens of Republican House members, particularly those most closely allied with former President Donald Trump, have voted against Ukraine aid, including Speaker Mike Johnson.

While lawmakers have approved more than $110 billion for Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, Congress has not passed any major aid for Kyiv since Republicans took control of the House in January 2023.

GLOBAL MESSAGE

Supporters of Ukraine aid say Washington and its partners must send a unified message to Russia as well as globally.

U.S. allies agree. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on social media that Republican senators should be ashamed for blocking the Ukraine aid package, saying former President Ronald Reagan would be "turning in his grave."

The Kremlin said Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone on Thursday and both rejected what they called U.S. interference in the affairs of other countries.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, one of the three negotiators on the border deal, told Reuters the biggest potential risk to the Ukraine bill would be opposition by Trump.

"Once he got loud on the immigration bill, the thing fell apart ... if he turns his flamethrower on Ukraine, I wonder how it survives," Murphy said in an interview on Wednesday.

Trump, who leads in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, has called for de-escalation in Ukraine and said he would have the conflict resolved in 24 hours if he were reelected. He also has said he would ask Europe to reimburse the U.S. for money sent to Ukraine.

Trump also pressed his fellow Republicans to reject any compromise on immigration. Tight control of the border is a feature of his campaign to try to defeat Democratic President Joe Biden in November.

Social media giants accused of not safeguarding children on platform

In a significant US Senate hearing, executives from leading social media companies, including Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Discord, faced rigorous questioning about their efforts to combat online child sexual exploitation.
