Saudi Arabia has decided to lower the major Crude prices for consumers in all regions, including its primary market in asia, for the month of February. This is due to the ongoing market downturn. Meanwhile, robust global supply, driven by the US, is increasing the possibility of a glut. This will compel the OPEC+ group, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, to continue cutting output into this year.

2023 was a year when world football witnessed a tectonic shift in power scales. European football, long touted as the fairytale destination for players had its sheen taken off by the rise of Saudi Arabia as potentially, the next powerhouse.

A mass exodus of players took place and some of the biggest names in world football packed their bags to secure a bag in the kingdom. Portuguese superstar and five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo was the first to move the needle when he left Europe to join Al-Nassr in March, earlier this year.

With the precedent set, what followed was one of the most eventful summer transfer histories in modern football. The big splurging clubs of Saudi Arabia came calling and footballers playing in the big-five leagues of Europe could not say no to the proposition.

The likes of Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, N'golo Kante and Aymeric Laporte among others bid adieu to their European adventures and settled for a fat paycheck in the Saudi Pro-League.

While initially the Saudi league only came for the veterans who seemingly had reached the end of their playing peaks, it soon turned into a major headache for the European clubs as young players, still in their early 20s, decided to take the flight to Saudi.

Allan Saint-Maximin, Franck Kessie, Merih Derimal, Jota, Gabri Veiga, and Ruben Neves were a few of the many youngsters to have joined Saudi clubs when the majority believed that they would stay in Europe and pursue their dreams of winning the Champions League.

Iran said on Thursday (Dec 14) that it was lifting visa requirements for 33 countries, including India and Saudi Arabia. According to the ISNA news agency, the Iranian Ministry of Tourism believed that an open-door policy would showcase Iran's determination to engage with different countries of the world. The decision would increase to 45 the number of countries or territories whose citizens can visit Iran without needing to obtain a visa, ISNA said. Which countries will be allowed to travel visa-free? As per the news agency, Iran's visa requirement has been lifted for 33 countries including Lebanon, Tunisia, India, Saudi Arabia, and several Central Asian, African, and Muslim countries. Only one Western-allied European nation was on the list, Croatia, a small member of the European Union and NATO. Tehran's decision is another step towards thawing relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, in particular after years of tension between the two oil-producing Gulf rivals. The news agency further reported that nationals of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar were included in the decision to waive visa requirements, in addition to Bahrain, with whom Tehran has not yet re-established full ties. "Russians will only profit from this visa exemption if they are visiting the country in groups," the news agency said. Omani nationals had been able to travel to Iran visa-free before this announcement. (With inputs from agencies)

For the first time in over eight years, Iranian pilgrims will visit Islam's holiest sites in Saudi Arabia from December 19, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday (Dec 13). The development is the latest sign of thawing ties between the Shia and Saudi powerhouses of West Asia.

Flights will take off from 10 airports around Iran carrying Iranians travelling on the year-round Umrah pilgrimage to the Islamic holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the semi-official Fars news agency said.

The first dispatch of Iranian Umrah pilgrims will occur from Dec. 19, Fars added.

Fars said up to 70,000 Iranian pilgrims were expected to travel to Saudi Arabia by the end of February 2024.

Since 2016, the Iranian pilgrims have only been able to complete the hajj pilgrimage, a religious duty deemed compulsory for Muslims who aim to carry it out once in their lifetime and which is subject to strict annual quotas and timings.

But Iranians are now able to complete the Umrah as well, deemed a "lesser pilgrimage" that can be taken at any time of the year and is not compulsory in Islam unlike Hajj.

The currently ongoing negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia also aim to re-establish non-religious tourism between the two countries, with flights linking Riyadh and Tehran.

With China at the centre of the geopolitical picture in March 2023, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore diplomatic ties after their seven years of bilateral estrangement.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has already conceded that the country's much-anticipated summer counteroffensive aimed to regain territories gained by Russia since February 2022, has not yielded expected results.

Besides, Russia has been able to withstand the impact of the economic sanctions by the US and European Union through straightforward oil exports to the countries such as India. While the European countries have been clandestinely buying Russian oil, and thus, are partly neutralising the impact of the sanctions.

With a wartime economy boosted by Russia's indigenous military-industry complex, the country recently proposed its biggest-ever defence budget.

The United States reportedly forced a Saudi-backed fund to disinvest from a major Artificial Intelligence (AI) chip startup backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman.

Rain Neuromorphics, a startup designing chips had raised $25 million last year from a Saudi Aramco-backed venture capital firm Prosperity7.

The startup aims to design chips that mirror how the brain works and serve companies that employ AI-powered tools.

The move to compel Prosperity7 to exit the US AI firm came after an intervention by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

Move taken on national security grounds

According to Bloomberg, the Saudi fund was informed last year about the Committee’s decision, a move which came in the backdrop of concerns regarding national security.

"CFIUS is committed to taking all necessary actions within its authority to safeguard U.S. national security. Consistent with law and practice, CFIUS does not publicly comment on transactions that it may or may not be reviewing," the US watchdog said in a statement.

CFIUS is an inter-agency committee which reviews foreign investments in US businesses and real estate that implicate national security concerns, Reuters reported.

USA aims to regulate global AI

The move to cut off Rain AI’s links to Saudi Arabia highlights the USA’s intentions to regulate and shape the global spread and development of advanced technologies, to maintain an edge over rivals like China.

Given this, the US expanded restrictions on the export of advanced AI chips, products of companies like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices, to include certain West Asian countries.

China accessing USA’s tech through West Asia

The United States reportedly forced a Saudi-backed fund to disinvest from a major Artificial Intelligence (AI) chip startup backed by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman. Rain Neuromorphics, a startup designing chips had raised $25 million last year from a Saudi Aramco-backed venture capital firm Prosperity7. The startup aims to design chips that mirror how the brain works and serve companies that employ AI-powered tools. The move to compel Prosperity7 to exit the US AI firm came after an intervention by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. Move taken on national security grounds According to Bloomberg, the Saudi fund was informed last year about the Committee’s decision, a move which came in the backdrop of concerns regarding national security. USA aims to regulate global AI The move to cut off Rain AI’s links to Saudi Arabia highlights the USA’s intentions to regulate and shape the global spread and development of advanced technologies, to maintain an edge over rivals like China. Iran is now looking to capitalise on its restored ties with longtime rival, the Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia, as well as neighbouring Arab states at a time when Washington-Tehran ties are facing testing times.

Saudi Arabia is prepared to host the 2034 World Cup in summer or winter, its football chief told AFP, as the conservative oil giant was anointed the tournament's host just weeks after announcing a bid. The quickfire crowning of the alcohol-free desert monarchy, which first allowed non-religious foreign tourists in 2019, comes less than a year after neighbouring Qatar held the first winter World Cup, and the first in the Middle East.

Despite summer temperatures touching 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) in the major cities, Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser al-Misehal did not rule out playing the tournament in the hottest months. "Of course, we are ready for all possibilities," Misehal said late on Tuesday at the Asian Football Confederation awards in Doha, when asked about the tournament's timing.

"Today there are many new technologies that help you with cooling or adding air conditioners in stadiums, in addition to the fact that there are many cities in the kingdom that enjoy a very wonderful atmosphere in the summer," he said. Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter which is undergoing dizzying economic reforms, threw its hat in the ring on October 4, just 27 days before a truncated bidding process for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups ended on Tuesday.

With the 2026 tournament set for the US, Canada and Mexico, and 2030 destined for Spain, Morocco and Portugal with South American involvement, only candidates from the Asian and Oceanian confederations were eligible for 2034, due to FIFA's continental rotation policy.

After Australia, the only other potential bidder, dropped out on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia was the sole candidate. Its successful bid was confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Instagram.

Human rights

The World Cup is just the latest in a string of Saudi sporting acquisitions under its 38-year-old de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including Formula One, heavyweight boxing, Newcastle United and LIV Golf.Saudi clubs backed by the Public Investment Fund sovereign wealth vehicle have signed off hundreds of millions of dollars on star footballers this year, hiring the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema in an unprecedented binge.

However, serious human rights concerns continue to plague Saudi Arabia, including the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, laws against homosexuality, gender inequality, freedom of speech and frequent use of the death penalty. Awarding the World Cup to Saudi Arabia "despite its appalling human rights record and closed door to any monitoring exposes FIFA's commitments to human rights as a sham", said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch.

However, SAFF said hosting the tournament is an "honour and privilege", in a statement posted on social media late on Tuesday. "Driven by a huge passion for the game by our young nation, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation is fully committed to meeting and exceeding the bid's requirements," it said.

Going it alone

Misehal also indicated that Saudi Arabia intends to push ahead and host the tournament alone, without asking its neighbours to hold any games. That would make Saudi the first country to organise the newly expanded, 48-team World Cup on its own, after the joint hostings in 2026 and 2030.

"Saudi Arabia will submit a separate bid," Misehal said, when asked if another country would hold any matches. Summers in the desert kingdom can touch 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit), temperatures that would be considered dangerous for football and likely too hot for fans to be outside.

Some cities enjoy temperate weather in the summer, including Abha, Taif and Al-Baha, which hosted the Arab Club Champions Cup in July and August. However, none of those cities has international-level stadiums, and the bigger Saudi venues are clustered in the major cities of Riyadh and Jeddah.

Despite questions over the bidding process and human rights, residents of the capital Riyadh hailed the news that Saudi Arabia will host the World Cup. "Saudi Arabia hosting World Cup 2034 is great news and it didn't come from nowhere," said 62-year-old Saud al-Oreifi, pointing to the country's growing portfolio of sports events.

"It came as a result of efforts and successes achieved in the past." Kuwaiti visitor Thamer al-Choiebi was similarly enthusiastic, saying: "I am proud in front of the whole world that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia will honour not only the Saudis but the whole Arab region."

As rich countries transition to green energy and abandon West Asia’s treasure trove, Saudi Arabia is allegedly working on a plan to artificially boost oil demand in poorer nations, especially those in Africa, an undercover investigation has revealed.

The investigation has been carried out by the Centre for Climate Reporting and Channel 4 News, a British TV channel.

It revealed that Riyadh aspires to drive up the use of fossil fuel-powered cars, buses and planes in Africa and elsewhere, under its so-called oil demand sustainability programme (ODSP).

What is Saudi Arabia’s ODSP?

The biggest aim of ODSP is to “artificially stimulate demand in some key markets,” according to Saudi officials cited by an undercover Channel 4 News reporter.

To achieve this goal, Saudi Arabia plans to boost the development of supersonic air travel, which will use three times more fuel than conventional planes. It also plans to join hands with carmakers to produce cheap engines en masse to make cars more affordable, thus making fossil fuel more lucrative for the poor.

“The rest of the world is weaning itself off dirty and polluting fossil fuels and Saudi Arabia is getting desperate for more customers and is turning its sights on Africa. It’s repulsive,” he added.

ODSP’s official version

The Saudi government sells ODSP as a scheme to “remove barriers” to energy and transport in poorer countries and “increase sustainability”, for example by providing gas cooking stoves to replace wood burning.

Its stated objective, according to an Arabic site, is to “sustain and develop the demand for hydrocarbons as a competitive source of energy, by raising its economic and environmental efficiency, while ensuring that the transition in the energy mix [is] sustainable for the kingdom of Saudi Arabia”.

Nigeria is gearing up for an "immediate" influx of multi-billion-dollar investments from Saudi Arabia following the signing of a landmark agreement.

Bloomberg reported that the agreement creates a corporate council that opens the door for Saudi Arabia to finance a number of Nigerian industries, including technology, telecommunications, energy, oil and gas, and agriculture.

Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Nigeria's Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, told Bloomberg, "We expect to see significant investment flow immediately" after a productive business round-table between Saudi and Nigerian officials.

The reestablishment of the Nigeria-Saudi Arabia Business Council, initially proposed in 2019 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, signals a new chapter in economic cooperation between the two nations.

Bagudu said that Saudi Arabia wants to make a successful investment, which might cost several billion dollars in Nigeria by means of this council, similar to how it did in India, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

Although precise numbers were not revealed, Bagudu emphasised undertakings from businesses such as the Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Co., who are looking to sign agreements in Nigeria before the year ends. The Saudi counterpart and executives from Salic met with the Nigerian Minister of Agriculture to reinforce collaborations.

Last week marked a milestone in Nigeria-Saudi Arabia relations, with the two nations sealing various investment and cooperation deals. Notably, Saudi Arabia pledged to invest in the overhaul of Nigeria's oil refineries and provide financial support for the government's foreign-exchange reforms.

The momentum continues as Saudi Arabia is set to unveil detailed investment plans within a week, with officials planning to close several deals during their visit to Nigeria by the end of December. The agreement to take action was reaffirmed at the business roundtable by Saudi Arabia's Minister of Trade and Investment, Kahlid El-Falih. "We are coming for implementation, it’s an action visit. It will be to sign and begin delivery on all agreements,” Bloomberg quoted him as saying.

Saudi Arabia, other Arab nations block proposal to cut all ties with Israel: Report

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who on Saturday (Nov 11) landed in Saudi Arabia to attend a summit on the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, said that now was the time to take decisive action rather than mere talks.

"Gaza is not an arena for words. It should be for action," Raisi said at Tehran airport before departing for the summit of Arab and Islamic nations in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.

"Today, the unity of the Islamic countries is very important," he added.

This marks the first visit by an Iranian head of state to Saudi Arabia since both Tehran and Riyadh called off decades-long hostility under a China-brokered deal in March.

"The summit will send a strong message to warmongers in the region and result in the cessation of war crimes in Palestine," Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who is accompanying Raisi, was quoted as saying by the Padolat government website.

"America says it doesn't want an expansion of the war and has sent messages to Iran and several countries [to this effect]. But these statements are not consistent with America's actions," Raisi said in the televised comments at Tehran airport.

"The war machine in Gaza is in the hands of America, which is preventing a ceasefire in Gaza and expanding the war. The world must see the true face of America," Raisi said.

Iran voices support for Hamas

Though Iran has denied involvement in the surprise assault by Hamas on Israel but has voiced support for the militant group.

In his first televised speech since the attack, Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had said, "We defend Palestine, we defend the struggles."

“We kiss the foreheads and arms of the resourceful and intelligent designers [of the operation] and the Palestinian youth,” he added.

He also urged "the whole Islamic world" to support the Palestinians.
