Five-time world champions Brazil arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday evening under tight security, beginning their stay ahead of Saturday's much-anticipated friendly against India. The Brazilian contingent landed at around 8:45pm and left through the VIP gate in two buses painted in the Selecao's trademark yellow and green. Two pilot cars led the convoy to the team's hotel on EM Bypass near Science City, while six private vehicles carried other officials. With security arrangements at their highest level, police prevented fans from gathering near the airport or lining the roads along the team's route. Only a small number of supporters managed to catch a glimpse of the Brazilian players. The touring contingent, comprising around 90 people, had an 11-minute window to exit the airport. Police had also planned an eight-minute window for the convoy to reach the hotel. Security was subsequently tightened around the team hotel, with people not associated with the Brazilian delegation kept away from the premises.
Vini gets biggest cheers
Despite the restrictions, the excitement surrounding Brazil's arrival was evident inside the hotel. Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, wearing a yellow hat, received the loudest cheers as chants of ‘Vini, Vini’ rang out through the lobby. The players were seen wearing olive-green hoodies, shorts and yellow caps as they entered the hotel. Brazil, however, arrived without Barcelona forward Raphinha. The winger suffered a right-thigh niggle during Brazil's 4-2 victory over Australia and has returned to Spain for treatment. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti and one player will attend the pre-match press conference at the team hotel on Friday morning. The team will then train at Salt Lake Stadium from 4pm as preparations for the India game continue. Also Read: Fifty years after Pelé, Kolkata hosts Brazil.
Brazil bring special food arrangements
The Selecao have also brought their own chef and hygiene manager to Kolkata, with extensive arrangements made to meet the team's dietary requirements. Meat, cheese and even water have been brought in for the squad, while the hotel has made special provisions for food preparation and storage. "They have a 30-minute window to prepare and consume the food. We will use only Bhetki fish for them. The rest of the meat products, mainly turkey, chicken and lamb, are all imported," a hotel official said. The arrangements highlight the detailed planning involved in hosting one of the world's biggest football teams, with Brazil's staff overseeing everything from food and hygiene to training and preparations.
India's World Cup-level test
The India-Brazil friendly is part of the Blue Tigers' series of matches against World Cup heavyweights. A political storm has erupted in West Bengal after the disastrous turn of events during Argentine football legend Lionel Messi’s visit to Kolkata for his GOAT tour. The incident, which occurred at the Vivekananda Yuvabharati Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday (December 13), led to a wave of protests and vandalism by disappointed fans. While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her regret and shock over the chaos, the BJP quickly launched a blistering attack, accusing her of "crocodile tears" and labeling the situation as an affront to both the state and the sport of football. The BJP, alongside the Congress, blamed the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led government for the debacle. However, the ruling party sought to distance itself from the mess, claiming the event had been organised by a private agency. The controversy intensified when Messi, after appearing on the field for just 10 minutes, was hurriedly whisked away due to what organisers described as "mismanagement." Fans, who had paid hefty prices to see the football superstar, were left furious as chaos ensued in the stadium. Also Read: Watch: Lionel Messi arrives in Hyderabad for GOAT Tour as fans cheer wildly amid high security BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya seized the opportunity to attack Mamata Banerjee's government, accusing them of endemic corruption and mismanagement. He described the incident as a blow to Bengal’s reputation and demanded immediate action. Malviya called for the resignation of key officials, including Sports Minister Arup Biswas and Sujit Bose, and insisted that an FIR be filed against them. He also demanded full refunds for fans who had paid exorbitant ticket prices ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. The event, which was hyped as a major spectacle for football fans, turned into a fiasco as Messi was forced to exit the event early, triggering widespread outrage. Eyewitnesses reported that frustrated fans resorted to throwing bottles and damaging hoardings, prompting security forces to intervene. The situation further deteriorated when videos of the unrest circulated on social media.
See Mamata Banerjee's post on X

I am deeply disturbed and shocked by the mismanagement witnessed today at Salt Lake Stadium. Malviya condemned the entire affair as a "major embarrassment" for Kolkata, accusing the Trinamool Congress of turning Messi’s visit into a political spectacle. He claimed the visit had been strategically orchestrated for political gain, especially after a 70-foot statue of the footballer was unveiled, and alleged that fans had been misled into buying expensive tickets.
See BJP's response to Mamata here

Stop shedding crocodile tears. This mismanagement and corruption are endemic to everything your government does. The BJP also took aim at the state's handling of the event, accusing the Trinamool government of damaging Bengal’s cultural image. They claimed that the government’s failure to manage such a high-profile event tarnished Bengal’s standing on the global stage. The Bengal Congress also criticised the administration, saying that the mismanagement during Messi’s visit had severely hurt the state's reputation. In response, Trinamool spokesperson Tauseef Rehman denied any involvement of the party in organising the event, insisting that it had been the responsibility of a private company.

I-League: Mohun Bagan beat East Bengal in Kolkata derby

Distraught Brazil players blamed poor finishing for the heart-breaking semifinal loss to England which ended their dreams of lifting the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the first time in 14 years.

England produced a masterclass performance to beat Brazil 3-1 in front of a shell-shocked crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium here last night to set up a first-ever all-European summit clash on October 28 at the same venue.

Three-time champions Brazil last won the title in 2003. They have gone without a title in the subsequent seven editions, including this one in India. They finished runners- up in 2005 and were fourth in 2011.

It was an emotional scene at the Salt Lake Stadium last night as several spectators among the 63,000-odd who turned up to watch the match cried after Brazil lost the match. Some players, including striker Lincoln, also broke down on the pitch.

Lincoln, another striker Paulinho and midfield maestro Alan Souza blamed the loss to lack of finishing touches in front of England goal.

"We played a great game but we missed scoring opportunities. England could score from their opportunities and that is why they won. That was the difference in the match," Alan, the fulcrum of most of the Brazil attacks, said.

"Our dream was to be the champion. We tried our best and we know we have reached our limits. We are sad but we have to now focus on the third-place match (against Mali) and try to win another game of football," said the pocket dynamo wonderkid, who is reported to have signed a deal to move to Real Madrid B team from his current side Palmeiras next season.

Asked if he was satisfied with his performance, he said, "It was a good competition but I would have preferred to be perfect not just good and that could have happened if we would have won the title."

Star striker Paulinho agreed with Alan that shyness in front of England goal led to their loss in the semifinals.

"We had our strategies for the match but we made mistakes mostly in front of goal. We did not score and also conceded goals. This was our mistake. Now we have to raise our heads up and think about the third-place match (against Mali on October 28)," he said.
"

We feel happy about the support we got from the fans here. But we are sad because we could not give them back by winning the title," said the Vasco da Gama player who has scored three goals from six matches.

Lincoln said England were the better team and they deserved to reach their maiden final.

"Me, Paulinho and the others could not score and that was why we lost. If you don't score you will lose. We were prepared for all situations but England were better than us," said the Flamengo player, who has scored three goals from six matches.

Asked why he cried after the match, Lincoln said, "After the German match (quarterfinals) I was very excited but after the final whistle (against England) I cried because I was very upset."
