Russia-Ukraine War | Zelensky: War Dynamics in Favour of Ukraine Since Last Month

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (May 18) claimed that a Russian drone struck a Chinese cargo vessel in the Black Sea overnight. This comes a day before the Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Zelensky suggested that the Russians ought to have knowledge of the Chinese ship at sea. He also accused Moscow of causing destruction across eight regions, injuring dozens of people.“Drones struck Odesa ... and one of the UAVs hit a vessel owned by China. The Russians could not have been unaware of what vessel was at sea,” Zelensky said.A Ukrainian navy spokesman told AFP that none of the crew members, all Chinese nationals, were injured. He added that the vessel continued on its journey.“The ship was entering for loading. After it was hit at night by a Shahed, the crew coped with the consequences on their own. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the vessel continued on its way to its port of destination,” navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk said. The Ukrainian navy has identified the vessel as KSL Deyang. It also released an image showing part of the upper deck blackened after the apparent hit.Zelensky said that Russia used 524 attack drones and 22 missiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles, in the attack. He urged European nations to possess their own anti-ballistic capabilities to face such threats.“Russia relies on ballistic missiles to strike people, and that is precisely why we in Europe must do everything possible to ensure reliable protection against this. Europe must have its own anti-ballistic systems and be self-sufficient in the face of these threats. We repeat once again: we need our own anti-ballistic capabilities and stronger Ukrainian air defence right now. This week will be focused on working with our partners to strengthen the protection of lives. I thank everyone already working on this together with Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

Kaja Kallas on Monday (May 11) said Ukraine is now in a stronger position than it was a year ago as EU foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss the war, sanctions, and Europe’s broader security strategy. Speaking after the talks, Kallas said that “Ukraine is in a much better position than a year ago” as the dynamics of the war are changing due to the EU’s €90bn loan package, Russia’s record battlefield losses, and Ukraine’s expanding long-range strikes inside Russian territory. “But of course, there is no time for complacency,” she said. ‘We are getting closer’: Trump announces 3-day ceasefire between Russia, Ukraine to mark Victory Day

Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Moscow has issued a strong warning of retaliatory strikes if any attempts are made to disrupt Victory Day celebrations. The statement highlights rising tensions as both sides continue to exchange threats and military actions. Security has been tightened across key Russian cities ahead of the annual event, which remains a major symbol of national pride and wartime remembrance.

Russia-Ukraine War: Moscow Threatens Retaliatory Strikes if Victory Day is Disrupted

Ukraine has reportedly launched “Flamingo” missiles targeting a military-industrial facility deep inside Russia, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The strike highlights Kyiv’s growing long-range strike capability and its strategy to hit critical Russian defense infrastructure far from the frontlines. While damage assessments are still emerging, the attack underscores rising tensions and the expanding geographic scope of the conflict.

Russia announces unilateral Ukraine ceasefire for May 8–9 with threat of missile strikes on Kyiv, while Ukraine declares its own truce

Russia on Monday (May 4) announced a unilateral ceasefire with Ukraine set for May 8–9, coinciding with Moscow’s annual World War II Victory Day commemorations, while warning of a ‘massive missile strike’ on Kyiv if Ukraine violates the truce. The proposal was first raised by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent phone call with US President Donald Trump. Ukraine said it would seek clarification from Washington regarding the offer. "In accordance with a decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, a ceasefire has been declared from May 8–9, 2026 ... We hope that the Ukrainian side will follow suit," the Russian defence ministry said. It further warned that if Kyiv attempted to disrupt Victory Day celebrations, Russian forces would respond with a “retaliatory, massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv.” "We warn the civilian population of Kyiv and employees of foreign diplomatic missions of the need to leave the city promptly," the statement added. Tensions between Ukraine and Israel have escalated into a public war of words on Tuesday (April 28) after Kyiv accused Israel of purchasing grain it claims was “stolen” from Russian-occupied territories. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted sharply, calling the alleged trade illegitimate. “This is not, and cannot be, legitimate business,” he said on Tuesday, pointing to a vessel he claimed was preparing to unload such shipments at an Israeli port. He added that Israeli authorities could not be unaware of the origin of cargo arriving at their ports, in a post on X. Kyiv said it is preparing a sanctions package in coordination with European partners against entities allegedly involved in what it described as a “criminal scheme.” The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also summoned the Israeli ambassador and issued a formal note of protest.

Ukrainian officials have reportedly proposed to rename a part of the Donbas region, which is coveted by Russia, to “Donnyland” as a nod to US President Donald Trump’s efforts against Moscow. The moniker is a reference to “Donbas” and “Donald”. According to a report, officials in Kyiv have repeatedly brought up the idea of Donnyland to the US. This comes as the war in Ukraine continues for more than four years, with Russia capturing the vast majority of Donbas and continuing to seek control of Donetsk.According to a New York Times report, citing people familiar with the negotiations, the renaming of Donbas was a part of an effort to convince the Trump administration to put more pressure on Russia’s territorial demands. Although there has been no official document suggesting the move. Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to continue fighting until Russian forces seize a key administrative boundary on the edge of the Donbas, the industrial region in eastern Ukraine where Russia first began waging war in 2014.The report added that the proposed “Donnyland” would cover an area of about 50 miles long and 40 miles wide in northeastern Donetsk, where Ukrainian forces have maintained a strong defensive belt despite sustained Russian offensives. Kyiv envisions the zone as a fortified buffer, reducing the risk of deeper incursions while buying time for longer-term security arrangements. The proposal for Donnyland even went as far as a negotiator creating its flag, coloured green and gold, and a national anthem using ChatGPT, the report added. It is not clear whether the US side saw these symbols.Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have also explored a “Monaco model” for the region, referencing the Mediterranean city-state, in which a semi-autonomous entity with economic incentives is designed to stabilise the area while keeping it aligned with Ukraine.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly stressed the importance of US support, saying that the only man who can end the war in Ukraine is Trump. “I trust President Trump because he’s the president of the United States, because your people, your people voted for him, and I respect their choice, and I will work with President Trump,” Zelensky told NBC’s “Meet the Press” earlier this year. However, broader negotiations over the future of Donbas have stalled in recent months, since the US waged war on Iran.

The ministry attributed the breakdown not to negligence but to the brutal physical realities of resupply in active combat zones. "This should not happen," acknowledged the ministry, adding "but the situation in different directions of the front is quite critical."Reports suggest that on certain sections of the front line, even delivering food and water has become a life-threatening mission. Supplies are often carried on foot or transported by small drones, both of which are vulnerable to Russian artillery and first-person view drones that hunt anything moving behind Ukrainian lines. As front lines shift, routes that were passable one day can become kill zones the next. Not only that, amid battlefield pressure, commanders are often forced to choose ammunition over food and water. This is not because commanders are indifferent to their troops hunger, but because the calculus of survival on an active front line is brutally straightforward: weapons take precedence.

How bad are conditions on Ukraine’s front lines right now? Viral images showing emaciated troops from a frontline unit have sparked outrage and forced a response from Kyiv. Here's what Ukraine said.

Photographs of visibly emaciated Ukrainian frontline soldiers went viral on social media on Thursday (Apr 3). The images posted by an account named 'i.petrovna' on Meta's Threads show three Ukrainian soldiers who are quite literally all skin and bones, with their ribs showing. The shocking pictures come as the Russia-Ukraine war continues unabated for over four years and two months. After the heart-wrenching pictures went viral with over 29K likes and 2.8k reshares in under 24 hours, Ukraine's Ministry of Defence issued an emergency response acknowledging what it called an "extreme situation". Replying to the Threads post, the Ukrainian ministry cited "complicated logistics," even as netizens slammed the "nightmare," asking "Where the f**k is our f**king power?!". Here's what Ukraine has to say about starving soldiers on the frontline. Also read | US to use nuclear weapons against Tehran? The images, posted by an anonymous account on Threads, showed four soldiers from the 2nd Mechanised Battalion of Ukraine's 14th Separate Mechanised Brigade appearing gaunt, hollow-eyed and severely weakened. The accompanying post was stark: "The guys are on the positions without food or water. Command isn't responding. The fighters are losing consciousness from hunger, drinking rainwater. There are also problems with communication."

'Extreme situation': Images of starving Ukrainian soldiers go viral, Kyiv says 'logistics are complicated'

Russia is expected to halt oil shipments from ‌Kazakhstan to Germany through the Druzhba pipeline starting from May 1, according to three industry sources. Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, the sources confirmed that a revised export schedule has been shared with both countries. The suspension of Kazakh supplies would add more uncertainty to Germany's energy outlook, as disruptions linked to the Iran war continue to impact shipments from the Middle East, only a few years after Berlin's long-standing energy relationship with Russia was shaken by the Ukraine war. Kazakhstan exported about 2.146 million metric tons of oil to Germany via the Druzhba pipeline in 2025, around 43,000 barrels per day, marking a 44 per cent increase from 2024, with 730,000 tons delivered in the first quarter of 2026. Full blockage would omit nearly 17 per cent of the up to 12 million metric tons of oil processed by Germany's PCK refinery in a year. Situated in the northeastern town of Schwedt, it is marked as one of the country's largest hubs for fuel, from which powers 9 out of 10 cars in the Berlin and Brandenburg region.
Ukraine conflict prompts strain in ties between Russia & Germany
The energy ministry of Russia did not immediately respond to ‌a request for comment. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that he was not aware of a decision to stop the oil exports. "We will try to check it," Peskov told reporters on a daily conference call. Additionally, Kazakhstan's energy ministry and the German government did not immediately react to requests for comment. Political and economic ties between Russia and Germany have been strained by the Ukraine conflict. Russian oil deliveries were halted after the war began, and in 2022, Berlin placed the German subsidiaries of Rosneft under trusteeship. Since 2023, Kazakhstan has been supplying oil to the PCK refinery through the northern branch of the Druzhba pipeline via Poland, though shipments have been repeatedly disrupted by Ukrainian drone strikes on the Russian section. A spokesperson for Poland’s pipeline operator PERN told Reuters that the firm is prepared to transport oil for non-Russian stakeholders of PCK through the port of Gdansk if required. The Schwedt refinery is partly owned by Rosneft, Shell, and Eni. Also read: ‘Violated ceasefire numerous times’: Trump accuses Iran ahead of Islamabad talks
