Russia and Ukraine conduct third prisoner exchange in recent months

The Russian authorities in the republic of Karelia, a region in the country's&nbsp;northwest, have announced a childbirth incentivisation policy for its female college students. Regional lawmakers have announced that females from local universities or colleges, under the age of 25, will be paid 100,000 rubles ($1,100) for giving birth to a healthy baby. The law, which comes into effect from January 1 next year, aims at shoring up the sinking fertility rate in Russia.

<h2>Efforts to boost birth rates</h2>

This is in line with several steps taken by the Russian government and other&nbsp;regions in Russia&nbsp;to boost birth rates, especially against the backdrop of the reported&nbsp;high casualties in the Ukraine war and the young workforce abandoning the country fearing forced mobilisation.

As per a report in Moscow Times, the Russian government is also exploring imposing a ban on contraceptives such as condoms. This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin has already urged people to consider a family of three or more children as the "norm".

<h2>Putin's appeal to Russian women</h2>

In December last year, Putin reportedly urged Russian women to give birth to as many as eight children and make it a “norm” to create large families.

"Many of our ethnic groups have preserved the tradition of having strong multigenerational families with four, five, or even more children. <h2>Concerns about the law</h2>

Many believe the law may do little to boost the country’s flagging birth rates due to a lack of economic security for women and protection.

Russia has designated the Moscow Times as an 'undesirable' organization, prohibiting its operations within Russia and subjecting anyone cooperating with it to potential prosecution.

The Kremlin has started a movement against independent media and reporting since Russia launched a military offensive on Ukraine in February 2022.

An investigation has revealed that Russia's fleet of alleged spy ships operating in the North Sea has increased to about 200 civilian ships.

According to a joint investigation by the Belgian newspaper De Tijd and the Follow the Money platform, which was published on Thursday (June 20), Russia has increased the number of its cargo ships, fishing boats, research vessels, oil tankers, and pleasure yachts that are suspected of gathering information about the locations of vital infrastructure and pipelines in the North Sea to sabotage or disrupt them.

According to the study, the vessels, most of which are docked in Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands, are accused of having participated in around 1,000 instances of espionage in the North Sea.

Since 2014, Russian ships have been accused of spying on infrastructure in the North Sea. In a previous inquiry, public broadcasters in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway discovered that during NATO training exercises, at least fifty Russian ships, supposedly civilian and fishing vessels, had lingered close to oil and gas fields, power stations, and military training grounds.

According to the investigation published on Thursday, Russian-flagged ships are regularly involved in suspicious loitering activities. They have also been used to scout out the locations and weak points of the vital infrastructure in the North Sea, instead of carrying out research, moving cargo, or fishing.

"Russian ships are suspicious in themselves, even if they maintain a very normal sailing pattern. Because every Russian ship, even if it works for a private company, works for the Russian government anyway," Thomas De Spiegelaere, spokesman for the Maritime Security Cell of the Belgian Federal Public Service of Mobility and Transport, said in a statement.

"Russia could use about 200 civilian vessels for espionage in the North Sea. This has not happened since the Cold War," Agentstvo, an independent Russian investigative site commented on the report on Friday.

Ewa Skoog Haslum, the chief of Sweden's navy, also expressed worry about Russian ships that were present in the Baltic Sea in April.

A US soldier Gordon Black, being held in Russia’s Vladivostok city, has pleaded guilty to theft charges and is cooperating with investigators, Russia's RIA state news agencies reported on Thursday (May 16).

"The US soldier is cooperating with the investigation, he admitted guilt," RIA quoted a representative of the local interior ministry as saying.

Gordon Black, a US staff sergeant, was arrested on May 2 by police in the Russian city of Vladivostok on suspicion of theft from a woman he was in a relationship with.&nbsp;

US soldier detained in Russia pleads guilty, state media reports

The United States on Wednesday (May 1) accused Russia of having used "the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces" in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The statement from the US State Department further alleged that Moscow has also been using "riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC."

The statement also details US sanctions against more than 280 individuals and entities "to impose additional costs on Russia for both its foreign aggression and internal repression."

Furthermore, it adds that among these are more than 80 entities and individuals, "including those engaged in the development of Russia’s future energy, metals, and mining production and export capacity; sanctions evasion and circumvention; and furthering Russia's ability to wage its war against Ukraine."

<h2>'Not an isolated incident'</h2>

The statement asserts that the use of such chemical weapons is far from an "isolated incident" and "is probably driven by Russian forces' desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield."

Slamming Moscow, the statement further states, "Russia's ongoing disregard for its obligations to the CWC comes from the same playbook as its operations to poison Aleksey Navalny and Sergei and Yulia Skripal with Novichok nerve agents."

Determining the illegal use of chemical weapons and riot weapons, America said it was imposing sanctions on three Russian state entities linked to Moscow's development of chemical and biological weapons. One of the entities is a specialised military unit that reportedly facilitated the use of chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops.

Furthermore, four Russian companies that support the three entities were also sanctioned.

Separately, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on three entities and two individuals who were involved in buying items for Russian military institutes linked to the country's chemical and biological weapons programmes.

These sanctions freeze any US-based assets belonging to the sanctioned entities and generally prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

<h2>What is Chloropicrin?</h2>

Chloropicrin is classified as a banned choking agent by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Hague-based organisation as per Reuters, was established to enforce and oversee compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) of 1993.

One of the earliest instances of the use of this banned chemical weapon was during World War I when German forces fired it against Allied troops.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday (Apr 29) expressed optimism that it was "not too late" for Ukraine to win its ongoing conflict with Russia, despite the significant challenges the war-torn nation faces.

Ukrainian forces, as per AFP, have been struggling in the face of Russian advances for months. The nation dependent on foreign military aid had to wait for stalled weapons deliveries from allies even as Russian troops steadily inched forward along the frontline.

<h2>Outgunned, 'but not too late'</h2>

During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the NATO chief said, "Ukraine has been outgunned for months, forced to ration its ammunition… But it's not too late for Ukraine to prevail."

He acknowledged that the months-long delays in US military aid to Kyiv had "serious consequences on the battlefield" but insisted that "more support is on the way".

"Our allies are looking into what more they can do, and I expect new announcements soon. So we are working hard to meet Ukraine's urgent needs," he added.

The urgency for increased support was echoed by President Zelensky, who said, "The Russian army is now trying to take advantage of the situation when we are expecting supplies from our partner."&nbsp;

"That is why promptness in supply literally means stabilisation of the front line," he stressed, adding, "Together, we must disrupt the Russian offensive."

The Ukrainian leader also mentioned that "some things" in the long-awaited aid "have started to arrive" because of recent approval by US President Joe Biden, but declined to "go into details".

<h2>Russian advances</h2>

This comes as Ukrainian forces face a relentless Russian offensive that has seen gradual territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, including the recent capture of two villages near the strategic town of Avdiivka.&nbsp;

Russia on Wednesday (Apr 24) announced a deal with Ukraine to exchange almost 50 children displaced by Moscow's 'special military invasion' on neighbour Kyiv.

This comes as Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that 16 Ukrainian children who had been "forcibly deported to Russia" were "in Qatar for medical, mental, and social recovery".&nbsp;

"All of them had previously been forcibly deported to Russia, but thanks to our friendly Qatar's mediation efforts, they have been released," said Zelensky. However, he did not address Russian claims about 48 children being exchanged.

Ukraine refuses to confirm Russia claims of exchange of 48 children

A Russian court on Wednesday ordered one of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu's deputies to be kept in custody on suspicion of taking bribes, the highest-profile corruption case since President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in 2022.

Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov was detained on Tuesday at work by the Federal Security Service (FSB), the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, for accepting large bribes.

Moscow's Basmanny District Court ordered Ivanov to be kept in custody until June 23. Ivanov, 48, was shown in uniform standing in a glass cage in court, frowning slightly, footage released by the court service showed.

"The investigation believes that Ivanov entered into a criminal conspiracy with third parties, teamed up with them in advance to commit an organised crime by an organised group," the court service said.

It said the conspiracy was to receive "property and services on a particularly large scale during contract and sub-contract work for the ministry of defence."

Ivanov, who said he was innocent, faces 15 years in jail if convicted. State media gave the case full coverage.

The sudden arrest of an ally of Shoigu, whom Putin tasked with fighting the war in Ukraine, triggered speculation about a battle within the elite and of a public crackdown on the corruption that has plagued Russia's post-Soviet armed forces.

Some Russian bloggers, who have accused senior generals of incompetence, rejoiced at the apparent fall of a top military official long linked to the ostentatious opulence which Putin has made clear he does not want to see displayed in wartime.

A Russian source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Ivanov was a close ally of Shoigu and that his arrest was a sharp blow to the defence minister. Shoigu, a Putin ally and one of Russia's most powerful men, is widely expected to keep his position in a coming government reshuffle.

Ivanov, who has served as deputy minister since 2016, was in charge of property management, housing, construction and mortgages at the defence ministry, whose spending has spiralled since the war began.

The TASS state news agency said the investigation into Ivanov has been underway for some time and that the FSB's military counter-intelligence department was involved.

The Kremlin dismissed a Russian report that Ivanov may be suspected of treason as pure speculation.

Ivanov had long been the subject of journalistic investigations. Russia's Anti-Corruption Foundation, headed by the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, had alleged that Ivanov and his family lived a life of luxury including yachts, helicopters, visits to the French Riviera, purchases of diamonds, and a 19th Century mansion in Moscow.

Forbes magazine listed Ivanov as one of the wealthiest men in Russia's security structures. Other investigations alleged corruption in Russia's reconstruction of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol now controlled by Russian forces.

Ivanov was unable to comment as he was in detention. Putin last month ordered the FSB to root out corruption in state defence procurement.

Ivanov, who graduated with from Moscow State University with a mathematics degree, rose through the ranks of Russia's state atomic energy sector before becoming deputy head of the Moscow region government under Shoigu, who was then governor.

Some Russian military bloggers have long accused top generals of corruption, especially after the army's hurried withdrawal from parts of Ukraine after over-extending itself during the first days of the invasion.

"It is clear that this is a tectonic shift," said Yuri Podolyaka, a popular pro-Russian military blogger. "And this is not about Ivanov... I hope this is only the beginning."

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has accused Russia of orchestrating a migrant crisis on its border while pleading with the European Union for assistance.

He levelled the allegation while speaking alongside the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday (Apr 19) during a visit to the Russia-Finland border.

Ukraine has warned that there will be a "third world war" if it loses the conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

Speaking to BBC on Wednesday (Apr 18) in Washington, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal voiced the warning while urging the United States Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill.

<h2>'Careful optimism'</h2>

Shmyhal, as per BBC, expressed "careful optimism" that the US lawmakers would pass the measure that has $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine.

"We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today," said the Ukrainian leader about the much-awaited US assistance.

"If we will not protect… Ukraine will fall," he added. "So the global, the global system of security will be destroyed… and all the world will need to find… a new system of security," he further said.

"Or, there will be many conflicts, many such kinds of wars, and in the end of the day, it could lead to the Third World War," warned Shmyhal.

Earlier, too, Ukraine has voiced similar alarming warnings about the possible consequences its defeat in the battle with Russia will bring. Just last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that after Ukraine, Russia would move on to invade Poland, triggering World War III.

<h2>Much-needed help for Ukraine</h2>

The US House of Representatives will vote on the aid package on Saturday (Apr 20). It also includes billions in funding for Israel as well as Taiwan.

It&nbsp;could finally get&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;the much-needed help to continue the battle against&nbsp;Russia.

Authorities in the Russian city of Orenburg called on thousands of residents to evacuate immediately on Friday due to rapidly rising flood waters after major rivers burst their banks due to a historic deluge of melting snow.

Water was also rising sharply in another Russian region - Kurgan - and in neighbouring Kazakhstan the authorities said 100,000 people had been evacuated so far, as rapidly warming temperatures melted heavy snow and ice.

The deluge of melt water has forced over 120,000 people from their homes in Russia's Ural Mountains, Siberia and Kazakhstan as major rivers such as the Ural, which flows through Kazakhstan into the Caspian, overwhelmed embankments.

Regional authorities called for the mass evacuation of parts of Orenburg, a city of over half a million people about 1,200 km (750 miles) east of Moscow.

"There's a siren going off in the city. This is not a drill. There's a mass evacuation in progress!," Sergei Salmin, the city's mayor, said on the Telegram messenger app.

Emergency workers said water levels in the Ural river were more than 2 metres (6.5 ft) above what they regarded as a dangerous level. Water lapped at the windows of brick and timber houses in the city, and pet dogs perched on rooftops.

Salmin called on residents to gather their documents, medicine and essential items and to abandon their homes.

People living in flooded homes lamented the loss of their belongings.

"Judging by the water levels, all the furniture, some household appliances and interior decorating materials are ruined," local resident Vyacheslav told Reuters as he sat in an idling motorboat and gazed over his shoulder at his two-storey brick home, partially submerged in muddy water.

"It's a colossal amount of money."

Alexei Kudinov, Orenburg's deputy mayor, had said earlier that over 360 houses and nearly 1,000 plots of land had been flooded overnight. He said the deluge was expected to reach its peak on Friday and start subsiding in two days' time.

Orenburg Governor Denis Pasler told President Vladimir Putin on Thursday that 11,972 homes had been flooded and if waters rose further 19,412 more people would be in danger.

The village of Kaminskoye in the Kurgan region was also being evacuated on Friday morning after the water level there rose 1.4 metres overnight, Kurgan's regional governor Vadim Shumkov said on the Telegram messaging app.

Kaminskoye is a settlement along the Tobol river which also flows through the regional centre Kurgan, a city of 300,000 people. Shumkov said a deluge could reach Kurgan in the coming days.

"We can only hope the floodplain stretches wide and the ground absorbs as much water as possible in its way," he said, adding that a dam was being reinforced in Kurgan.

Kurgan is home to a key part of Russia's military-industrial complex - a giant factory that produces infantry fighting vehicles for the army which are in high demand in Ukraine where the Russian military is on the offensive in some areas.

There were no reports that the factory, Kurganmashzavod, had so far been affected.

Rising water levels are also threatening southern parts of Western Siberia, the largest hydrocarbon basin in the world, and in areas near the Volga, Europe's biggest river.

Water levels in some other Russian regions are expected to peak within the next two weeks.

A team of vigilante hackers known as One Fist has been recognised by Ukraine's military for their cyber-attacks against Russia. The group that has been involved in stealing data from Russian military firms and hacking cameras to spy on troops has reportedly been sent awards of gratitude for its efforts.

While many nations have official award systems for ethical hacking, this is believed to be the first time a country has awarded hackers for such actions.

<h2>Gratitude for hacking</h2>

As per a BBC report, the certificates of gratitude were sent to the hackers from eight different countries, including the UK, the US, and Poland, for their "significant contribution to the development and maintenance of vital activities of the military".

'Voltage' said he has devoted himself to hacking for Ukraine, even at the cost of losing his job and spending all his life's savings.

"I've lost my job doing this and spent all my life savings in pursuit of a victory for Ukraine," he said, adding, "This award is a real morale-booster."

<h2>Concerns around rewarding hacking</h2>

Previously, in October, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned against the use and encouragement of civilian hackers. Emphasising the need to uphold the rules of war, it even published guidelines to reinforce them.

Ukraine hands out awards to vigilante hackers for cyber-attacks against Russia

Russia has demanded that Ukraine hand over its head of the SBU Security Service. On Sunday (Mar 31), the Russian foreign ministry demanded that Kyiv must surrender all individuals linked to terrorist activities carried out in Russia, including Vasyl Maliuk, the security service chief.

Dismissing the demand as "pointless," the SBU, as per a Reuters report, reminded the Russian ministry that the nation's President Vladimir Putin has an international arrest warrant pending against him.

<h2>Russia's extradition demand</h2>

The Russian Foreign Ministry in its statement highlighted the violent incidents in Russia since its forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022. These incidents include bombings that killed the daughter of a prominent nationalist and a war blogger; and an incident in which a writer was seriously injured.&nbsp;

"The traces of these crimes lead to Ukraine," claimed the Russian ministry.

"Russia has turned over to Ukrainian authorities its demands … for the immediate arrest and extradition of all those connected to the terrorist acts in question," said the statement.

The Russian statement demanded that Ukraine cease all support for terrorist activities, extradite the guilty parties, and compensate the victims for damages.&nbsp;

It also warned that "Ukraine's violation of its obligations under anti-terrorist conventions will result in it being held to account in international legal terms."&nbsp;

Among those listed for extradition is SBU head Vasyl Maliuk, who has previously admitted that his service was behind attacks on the bridge linking Crimea to the Russian mainland since the 2022 invasion.&nbsp;

<h2>SBU's response</h2>

The SBU responded by calling the Russian demands "cynical."

Describing Russia as a "terrorist state" it said that the demands "sound particularly cynical coming from the terrorist state itself."

"Therefore, any words from the Russian Foreign Ministry are pointless," it remarked.

Referring to the arrest warrant against Putin issued by the International Criminal Court in connection with the alleged war crimes of illegally transferring Ukrainian children to Russia, it stated that "the tribunal in The Hague is waiting for him."

These incidents include bombings that killed the daughter of a prominent nationalist and a war blogger; and an incident in which a writer was seriously injured. "The traces of these crimes lead to Ukraine," claimed the Russian ministry. Also read | Russia-Ukraine war: Putin signs decree to summon 150,000 Russian conscripts "Russia has turned over to Ukrainian authorities its demands … for the immediate arrest and extradition of all those connected to the terrorist acts in question," said the statement. The Russian statement demanded that Ukraine cease all support for terrorist activities, extradite the guilty parties, and compensate the victims for damages. It also warned that "Ukraine's violation of its obligations under anti-terrorist conventions will result in it being held to account in international legal terms." Among those listed for extradition is SBU head Vasyl Maliuk, who has previously admitted that his service was behind attacks on the bridge linking Crimea to the Russian mainland since the 2022 invasion. SBU's response The SBU responded by calling the Russian demands "cynical." Describing Russia as a "terrorist state" it said that the demands "sound particularly cynical coming from the terrorist state itself." "Therefore, any words from the Russian Foreign Ministry are pointless," it remarked. Referring to the arrest warrant against Putin issued by the International Criminal Court in connection with the alleged war crimes of illegally transferring Ukrainian children to Russia, it stated that "the tribunal in The Hague is waiting for him." Putin's participation in upcoming G20 meet subject to bloc's consensus, says French President Macron

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday urged voters, including those in annexed parts of Ukraine, to cast their votes in Russia's upcoming presidential election, where he is expected to secure a victory.&nbsp;

This comes as Moldova accused Russia of violating its laws by printing ballot papers in the separatist region of Transdniestria for the Russian presidential election.

<h2>Exercise your right to vote: Putin</h2>

In a video address, Putin told citizens, "It is vital to underscore our cohesion and resolve and move forward together. Every vote you cast is valued and meaningful."

"I therefore ask you in the coming three days to exercise your right to vote," he added.

Putin's address highlighted the voters' desire for a strong, prosperous, and free Russia, "in order to raise living standards and the quality of life."&nbsp;

"And that is how it will be," he said, emphasising that voting was a "demonstration of patriotic feeling," particularly in areas of eastern and southern Ukraine now under Russian control.

Putin, who faces three challengers, none of whom have criticised him, enjoys strong support, with recent polls showing him standing at 75 per cent approval.&nbsp;

However, two candidates who were seeking to end the conflict in Ukraine have been disqualified.

<h2>Moldova's allegations&nbsp;against Russia</h2>

Meanwhile, ex-Soviet Moldova has accused Russia of breaking laws by printing ballot papers in Transdniestria ahead of the Russian presidential election.&nbsp;

"These ballots were more than likely printed right there (in Transdniestria) to avoid taking them through a border crossing," said the nation's Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian before a government meeting.

"It is hard to say how they would have been brought over a border. Moldova's borders are controlled and there is no way of legally bringing them in or taking them out."

The country's pro-European authorities also summoned the Russian ambassador to protest Russia's decision to open six polling stations in Transdniestria, arguing it breached an agreement allowing voting only at the Russian embassy in Chisinau.

Transdniestria, which split from Moldova as the Soviet Union collapsed, remains unrecognised internationally and heavily reliant on Russian support. The region's printing of ballots in defiance of Moldovan laws is seen as a challenge to Moldova's authority.

However, the Russian ambassador called the complaint unfounded and said that Moscow was simply enabling around 250,000 Russian nationals in Moldova to vote.

Russia election 2024: Putin urges citizens to vote even as Moldova accuses Moscow of breaking laws

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that he had approved the candidacy of former army chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi as ambassador to Britain.

Zaluzhnyi, widely seen as a national hero for overseeing Ukraine's war effort throughout Russia's full-scale invasion, was replaced last month by ground forces commander Oleksandr Syrskyi.

"Today, I approved the candidacy of our country's ambassador to the United Kingdom, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi," Zelensky said in his nightly video address. "General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi spoke to me specifically about pursuing that direction -- a diplomatic direction."

Zelensky said Ukraine's Foreign Ministry had sent the request for approval and that "our alliance with Britain is set to strengthen further".

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told national television that the president "had long sought" a suitable candidate "and one of the key requirements was an understanding of the military context.

"Britain is one of the leaders in military help for Ukraine. It is a country which has a vision of military strategy. The new ambassador therefore had to have a deep military background," Kuleba said.

Ukraine has not had an ambassador in Britain since Zelensky dismissed former envoy Vadym Prystaiko in July 2023 after he publicly criticised the president.

Zaluzhnyi's dismissal as army chief was the focal point of a shakeup of senior positions in Ukraine's armed forces. It followed weeks of tension and speculation about possible disagreements between the president and his top commander.

Zaluzhnyi had written in a published article last November that the now-two-year-old war against Russia had entered a stage of attrition, and he called for technological advances.

Zelensky&nbsp;did not respond directly to the comments, but denied any suggestion that the war had entered a stalemate.

Zelensky&nbsp;on Thursday met British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps in Kyiv and said he had expressed gratitude for Britain's "tangible leadership" in providing support for Ukraine and working together to counter Russian actions.

A British government statement said Shapps announced a 325 million pound ($417 million) package of military aid for Ukraine, including delivery of more than 10,000 drones. A British aid package in January also provided for drones and was valued at 200 million pounds.

In his remarks, Zelensky said priority areas of cooperation were boosting air defences, long-range weapons, and artillery and joint production of weapons, and bringing Russia to account.

"We have already reached a historically unprecedented level of cooperation with Britain," Zelensky&nbsp;said, referring to Britain as the first of several countries to sign an accord extending security guarantees to Ukraine.

A senior Ukrainian military commander, on Wednesday, said that the Ukrainian military is working to stabilise the battlefield situation and intends to form units for counter-offensive actions against Russia later this year.

<h2>Stabilisation&nbsp;</h2>

"We will stabilise the situation shortly," said Oleksandr Pavliuk, Ukraine's newly appointed ground force commander, in televised remarks.&nbsp;

They will "do everything possible to prepare the troops for more active actions, and to seize the initiative," he said.

As per a Reuters report, Pavliuk explained that the current focus is on withdrawing military units that have lost their potential and rebuilding them to create a force for counter-offensive actions later this year.

<h2>Ukraine's setbacks</h2>

Just last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia would try to launch a new offensive in the spring or summer. However, he emphasised that Ukraine has its own battlefield plan.

According to Ukrainian military spokesperson Dmytro Lykhoviy, Russian forces were unable to make further advances near Avdiivka. During remarks on national television on Wednesday, he noted that Russian troops are concentrating their efforts on an area to the south, near the village of Novomykhailivka.

Maksym Zhorin, a Ukrainian commander in the region, also confirmed that Russian forces are facing challenges in advancing since the capture of Avdiivka and several neighbouring villages. He mentioned that their latest target is the village of Orlivka.

"They are constantly attempting to advance and make progress wherever possible," Zhorin wrote on Telegram. "Despite significant losses, they persist in launching assaults, both day and night."

This comes as the Ukrainian forces faced a setback after nine months of relatively stable front lines when the eastern city of Avdiivka fell to Russian forces earlier in February after enduring months of devastating attacks. Ukraine was compelled to pull back its troops from several neighbouring areas due to Russia's continuous offensive and dwindling ammunition supplies. To replenish these supplies, Ukraine urgently requires a vital aid package from the US, which has been delayed by Republicans in Congress.

Ukrainian&nbsp;President Volodymyr Zelensky sounded a warning on Sunday, expressing concern over the potential decrease in aid from the United States to Kyiv and emphasised&nbsp;the decision would send a negative message.

Zelensky, in an interview with German national broadcaster ARD, also sounded an alarm about the looming threat of the Ukraine conflict spiralling into World War Three.

<h2>A bad signal &nbsp;</h2>

Amid US President Joe Biden grapplling&nbsp;with a Republican obstruction on additional support to Ukraine, Zelensky urged Germany to leverage its economic influence to encourage EU partners to enhance their contributions to Kyiv's battle against Russia.

Urging nations from Germany to the United States to stand by Ukraine in these critical times, he articulated the gravity of the situation. Zelensky, as per Reuters, asserted that a potential Russian strike on a NATO country could serve as the ominous start to the Third World War.

"It seems to me that the Chancellor (Olaf Scholz) is aware of this risk," he said.&nbsp;

The ongoing political dynamics in the United States, particularly the Republican opposition, have posed challenges to the continuation of aid to Ukraine. Biden's administration has prioritised supporting Ukraine, and US assistance has been crucial in helping the country resist a significant Russian force. However, the opposition Republicans have sought to halt these efforts, linking budget approvals to demands for stringent measures against illegal migration.
