Reacting to the development, Navalnaya’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said the speed of the Rosfinmonitoring designation means the opposition figure is “doing everything right.”

Navalnaya had previously slammed the court warrant issued two days ago, saying Russian leader Vladimir Putin was a war criminal and he should be in prison.

"Vladimir Putin is a killer and a war criminal. He belongs in prison," she said.

Navalny's former chief of staff Leonid Volkov termed the warrant a recognition of Yulia's efforts.

"Quite a recognition of Yulia's determination to continue Alexei’s fight!" Volkov said.

Previously, Russia had outlawed Navalny's organisations, adding them to the infamous list of "extremists and terrorists."

But China's rising economic power and sprawling investment in the region has challenged Russian influence.

Alongside the forum's main sessions, the Kremlin said Putin planned to meet bilaterally with a number of leaders at the summit, probably to include Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

NATO member Turkey is positioning itself as a possible mediator in the Ukraine war.

Putin, Xi vie for influence at Central Asian summit

Donald Trump has repetitively claimed that he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine war in one day if re-elected as president. However, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations disagrees, stating that Trump&nbsp;cannot.

When asked to reply to the claims from Trump, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters on Monday (Jul&nbsp;1) that the Ukrainian crisis cannot be solved in a&nbsp;day.

“Russians and Ukrainians are dying and I want them to stop dying. I'll have that done in 24 hours," Trump stated.&nbsp;

He mentioned that this would happen after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He continued&nbsp;to repeat this claim on the campaign trail.

During last week’s debate with President Joe Biden, Trump claimed, “If we had a real president, a president that knew that was respected by Putin ... he would have never invaded Ukraine.”

While Nebenzia said the war could have ended in April 2022 in Istanbul when Russia and Ukraine were “very close” to an agreement. Moscow invaded its neighbour two months before, i.e. on Feb. 24, 2022, though Russia insists its “special military operation” began in 2014 after clashes in Ukraine’s east resulted in Moscow seizing the Crimea Peninsula.

The Russian ambassador further blamed Ukraine’s Western backers for blocking the April 2022 peace deal and telling Kyiv to keep fighting Russia.

“Zelensky is going around with his so-called peace plan which is not a peace plan but a gag,” Nebenzia said.

Nebenzia also highlighted Putin’s offer that was presented on June 14 to immediately order a cease-fire in Ukraine and start negotiations if Kyiv begins withdrawing troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and renounces plans to join NATO.

Zelensky, who has vowed not to give up any territory, rejected what he called an ultimatum by Putin to surrender more land.

In April, Israel said that it would begin retiring its eight Patriot batteries, which date back more than 30 years, and replace them with more advanced systems.

However, the batteries, being used in Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas, have not yet been discontinued due to concerns that tensions with the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group could erupt into a full-blown war.

The missile transfer would represent a&nbsp;change in Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. Ukraine currently has at least four Patriot systems, supplied by both the US and Germany.

Facing a barrage of Russian missiles, Ukraine has repeatedly pleaded with Western nations, especially the US, for advanced air defence systems. In response, the United States recently prioritised sending Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine, putting deliveries to other countries on hold.

Notably, Washington provides Israel with about $3.8bn annually in military support, and by April had released an additional $14bn in emergency funds for its ally since the war with Hamas broke out.

“It would be fortuitous if these older Patriot missiles were put to good use in another theatre before they aged out,” said Tom Karako, head of the missile defence project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think-tank in Washington.

NATO's 32 nations on Wednesday (June 26) appointed outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the alliance's new supremo.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday (June 25) said it has issued arrest warrants for Russia's former defence minister and military chief over alleged crimes during Russia's war against Ukraine.

The arrest warrants for the Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and former defence minister Sergei Shoigu were issued on Monday but were made public on Tuesday.

Both Shoigu and Gerasimov were accused of having committed war crimes for directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects and crimes against humanity over "inhumane acts" during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the ICC said in a&nbsp;statement.

At least 30 drones were destroyed over the Russian region of Bryansk, which borders Ukraine, said the regional governor.&nbsp;

Several drones were also destroyed over the Smolensk region, Vasily Anokhin, governor of the region in Russia’s west said.&nbsp;

As per preliminary information, there were no casualties or destruction in either region, the governors said.

The attack prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to call for more military aid for Kyiv to help deal with the growing threat of such weapons.

According to the report, even before the latest mobilisation push thousands of Ukrainian men fled the country, including some who swam across the river separating Ukraine and Romania.&nbsp;

The report noted that while the number of men trying to avoid being drafted is unclear, tens of thousands of men are part of social media groups which alert other members about the movements of draft officers.&nbsp;

NYT citing military analysts said that Kyiv is having a difficult time holding its lines because the Ukrainian troops often lack proper and enough training as Ukraine is quick to send personnel to the battleground to replace losses.&nbsp;

However, Colonel Volodymyr Novosiadlyi, an official responsible for conscription in Kyiv told the newspaper that those drafted are trained for at least a month and that the military is also trying to treat draftees with fairness and empathy.&nbsp;

He added, “Every citizen should understand the need to fulfill their duties” in defending their country.

The mobilisation law passed in April made it compulsory for all draft-age men to register their details on a government website based on which the draftees would be chosen. Failure to register by July 16 will be a criminal offence.&nbsp;

More than 2,750 convicts have been released from Ukrainian prisons since the law was adopted in May, according to a report by the Washington Post.&nbsp;

“Children shot at. Hospitals bombed. Heavy artillery launched on entire communities. All along with hateful, divisive, and dehumanising rhetoric,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;

The data, collected by the OHCHR, “horrifyingly” also indicates “that the proportion of women killed in 2023 doubled and that of children tripled, compared to the year prior,” Turk said.&nbsp;

Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are suffering a drastically worsening human rights environment, alongside “unconscionable death and suffering” in Gaza, the UN rights chief said.&nbsp;

Turk also said he was “appalled by the disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law by parties to the conflict” amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

According to the UN data, over 120,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, have been killed or injured because of Israel’s military operation in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

The recent wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure has destroyed 68 per cent of the war-torn country’s electricity production capacity, “bringing the system to a dangerous tipping point, especially ahead of winter,” said the UN rights chief.&nbsp;

According to Turk, as of the end of May this year the gap between the humanitarian funding requirements and available resources stood at $40.8 billion, which left appeals funded just 16.1 per cent on average.

The recent slew of exemptions that India has received relates to Countering American Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) and International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA). With sanctions imposed over China and Turkey under CAATSA, and Saudi Arabia, Russia, Pakistan, Myanmar, China, Turkey facing sanctions under IRFA, New Delhi’s exclusion shows India’s ascent in the USA’s scheme of things.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, these exceptions have come amidst New Delhi opting for Russia-manufactured S-400 systems and the US Commission on International Religious Freedom’s recommendations to put India on the list of ‘countries of particular concern’.&nbsp;

In the meantime, France senses a great opportunity to keep its defence manufacturing buoyed majorly by Indian imports.&nbsp;

With the Russia-Ukraine crisis testing the alliances and ties between nations, Indo-French relations have&nbsp;withstood the test of time and continue to tread their respective paths to national interest without being intrusive in each other’s affairs. As reported by The Hindu, the Indo-France relations are based on philosophies and are much more than defence purchases, military exercises, the Republic and Bastille Day celebrations, and these are mere manifestations of those philosophies.&nbsp;

France, a major defence manufacturer and a country seeking to pursue strategic autonomy in the background of deals getting aborted with the formation of groups like AUKUS, craves reinvigorated relations with India.&nbsp;

Concisely, noteworthy is the fact that India and its diplomats have never been loudmouths. Indian diplomacy means business and the instances mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg. The foreign policy of a country that maintains cordial relations with Russia for continental stability in Asia and does not shy away from siding with the US to ensure tranquillity in the Indo-Pacific is to be seriously reckoned with.&nbsp;

With both Moscow and Washington balanced, the diplomacy that India has pursued by virtue of its unbudgeable autonomy, glitters as a case study for watchers of geopolitics. These diplomatic feats epitomise India’s proactive foreign policy that believes in results rather than rhetoric.

The Ukraine-Russia war was the first domino to fall, starting a cascade, such as escalating geopolitical tensions and bringing forth an economic crisis. The war has been ongoing for over two years and Ukraine saw a depletion of its military strength. To combat that, Ukraine has introduced a law that allows the recruitment of convicts into its military. Global defence organisations are also hiring at unprecedented rates to meet the ever-rising demand. Ukraine's Military Recruitment of Convicts As Ukraine continues to fight to defend itself against Russian attacks, the country faces a military personnel deficit. Last month, the Ukrainian government enacted a conscription law that allows physically fit and motivated prisoners convicted under certain charges to serve in the Armed Forces. This allows for the voluntary mobilisation of inmates. Convicts who enlist are promised integration into regular battalions rather than distinct penal units, however, this strategy is being debated by military leaders. According to the Ministry of Justice, Ukraine now has 26,000 prisoners in jail. The government reports that since the law went into force, 5,000 male convicts have applied to join the military. The courts have already freed roughly 2,000 individuals from prison and into the military after passing their medical exams. The first group of prisoner recruits is currently undergoing basic training. "Ukraine's decision to recruit convicts into their military amidst personnel shortages is a controversial approach. While it may provide short-term solutions, it raises concerns about military discipline and cohesion, training and integration challenges, potential human rights violations and long-term effectiveness and reliability," defence expert and war veteran, Col (Dr) Divakaran Padma Kumar Pillay told WION. For example, Russia recruited convicts and mercenaries, raising concerns about human rights and accountability, " said Pillay, who is a recipient of Shaurya Chakra, one of India's biggest military honours. "The US military has previously hired soldiers with criminal backgrounds, but only after thorough screening and rehabilitation programmes. India's Rehabilitation Policy allows former insurgents to be rehabilitated into paramilitary forces, with a focus on reintegration and repentance," added the PhD Research Fellow. "While recruiting convicts may address short-term personnel shortages, it is crucial to consider the long-term implications and potential consequences on military effectiveness, discipline, and human rights. A balanced approach, incorporating alternative solutions and rehabilitation programmes, may yield more sustainable results," Pillay continued. Global defence companies' hiring boom The hiring boom is not limited to Ukraine. In parallel, defence companies around the world are undergoing the most intense recruitment drive since the end of the Cold War in 1991, according to Financial Times. According to an FT survey of 20 major and medium-sized US and European defence and aerospace companies, they want to bring on tens of thousands of extra workers this year to handle the spike in orders brought on by the crisis in Ukraine and increased geopolitical instability across the world. In all, 10 surveyed organisations plan to increase their workforce by over 37,000 positions, representing a nearly 10% increase. This boom in hiring drive includes positions such as engineers, software developers, cyber-security analysts, welders, and mechanics. There's a demand for both freshers and seasoned experts in these positions. Companies like Rheinmetall and Nammo who are focusing on increasing their manufacture of ammunition are at the forefront of these hiring drives. Nammo has raised its personnel by 15% in the last two years and plans to double its workforce by 2030. Data at a glance Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and General Dynamics jointly have over 6,000 job openings. Ten businesses polled plan to add about 37,000 jobs, or nearly 10% of their entire workforce. Nammo's headcount rose by 15%, from 2,700 in 2021 to 3,100 in 2023. Over the last three years, Thales has hired 9,000 workers, accounting for 11% of its current 81,000-strong workforce. In a letter published by North Korean state media, the Russian president pledged his unwavering support for North Korea.&nbsp;

Putin&nbsp;landed on Wednesday&nbsp;morning for his two-day visit to the isolated nation in 24 years amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine as well as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/multiple-north-korean-soldiers-injured-after-they-cross-the-dmz-732724">confrontation between North and South Korean troops</a> on their shared border.&nbsp;

The Russian president also highlighted that the two nations have developed good relations and partnerships over the past seven decades based on equality, mutual respect and trust.

He also thanked North Korea for supporting what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine despite “U.S. pressure, blackmail and military threats”.&nbsp;

“We highly appreciate that the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is firmly supporting the special military operations of Russia being conducted in Ukraine,” Putin wrote in the article, referring to North Korea by its official name.&nbsp;

He added that Russia and the North are “now actively developing the many-sided partnership”.&nbsp;

<h2>Putin vows trade, security&nbsp;</h2>

Ahead of Putin’s visit, Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said Moscow and Pyongyang may sign a partnership agreement which would include security issues.

In his letter, Putin said Russia and North Korea will develop trade and payment systems “that are not controlled by the West”.&nbsp;

The two countries, the Russian president wrote, will also jointly oppose sanctions which he described as “unilateral and illegal restrictive measures” against their nations.&nbsp;

Russia has been grappling with thousands of sanctions imposed against it by the West after it invaded Ukraine in late February 2022.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, North Korea, for years now, has been under heavy United Nations Security Council (UNSC) economic sanctions over its nuclear weapons and missile programs.&nbsp;

While Moscow and Pyongyang have been allies since North Korea’s founding after World War II, with Putin being isolated from the international stage due to the Ukraine war, the two nations have become even closer.&nbsp;

The United States and its allies in the West have repeatedly accused North Korea of sending Russia some much-needed weapons, including ballistic missiles to support Moscow amid the war. However, both nations have denied arms transfers.&nbsp;

The visit also comes at a critical time, with tensions on the Korean Peninsula at their highest point in years with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s weapons tests and the US and South Korea holding military drills in response.&nbsp;

The data also revealed that Nike products imported to Russia plunged 81 per cent to $21 million in 2021 but rebounded to at least $74 million in 2023.

Global brands come back to Russia via parallel imports

The UK, US and Canada have jointly called out Russia for plotting to influence Moldova's upcoming presidential election and referendum on European Union membership later this year.

The three governments in a joint statement issued on the first day of the G7 summit, accused Russian actors of “spreading lies” and being engaged in a long-running campaign of political interference aimed at weakening Moldova's democratic institutions.

The three countries said Moscow was trying to undermine Moldova’s pro-western president, Maia Sandu, before the next presidential election and referendum on EU membership. Both votes are due on 20 October.

The former Soviet nation bordering Ukraine has long feared Russian meddling in its internal affairs, particularly in the Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Transnistria and the autonomous southern region of Gagauzia. Sandu's administration has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow.

According to the UK, US and Canadian governments, Russian actors were seeking to foment negative public view of Sandu, western governments and the prospect of Moldovan membership of the EU.&nbsp;

The three countries further said that if Sandu were re-elected, “there is reason to believe Moscow will work to provoke protests”.&nbsp;

UK, US, and Canada accuse Russia of interfering in Moldovan elections

Russian prosecutors said on Thursday they had sent the case of detained U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich to court after concluding he had been collecting information for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency about a Russian tank factory.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested on March 29, 2023, in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage that carry up to 20 years in prison after the FSB, the main successor agency to the KGB, said it had caught him "red-handed" trying to obtain military secrets.

He denies any wrongdoing and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, said in a statement on Thursday after the latest Russian move that he was facing "a false and baseless charge" based on what it called "calculated and transparent lies." President Joe Biden has called his detention "totally illegal".

The Journal spoke out after the office of Russia's General Prosecutor said in a statement it had approved Gershkovich's criminal indictment and that his case would be heard by a court in Yekaterinburg.

It did not say when the case would be heard or whether the trial would be closed to the public as is common in such cases.

"The investigation has established and confirmed with documentary evidence that Gershkovich, an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal, on the instructions of the CIA, collected secret information in the Sverdlovsk region in March 2023 about the activities of the defence plant NPK Uralvagonzavod JSC on the production and repair of military equipment," the prosecutors' statement said.

"Gershkovich carried out the illegal actions using painstaking conspiratorial methods," it added.

Prosecutors did not release any documentary evidence to back the charge.

PRE-TRIAL DETENTION

A joint statement from Almar Latour, his newspaper's publisher, and its editor in chief, Emma Tucker, demanded Gershkovich's immediate release.

"Russia’s latest move toward a sham trial is, while expected, deeply disappointing and still no less outrageous," the statement said.

"Evan has spent 441 days wrongfully detained in a Russian prison for simply doing his job. Evan is a journalist. The Russian regime’s smearing of Evan is repugnant, disgusting and based on calculated and transparent lies."

Latour and Tucker said they now expected the U.S. government to redouble efforts to secure his release.

The first U.S. journalist arrested on spying charges in Russia since the Cold War, Gershkovich is currently being held in pre-trial detention in Moscow and had been the subject of prisoner exchange talks between Moscow and Washington.

The Uralvagonzavod factory, about which he is accused of gathering secret data, has been sanctioned by the West. Based in the city of Nizhny Tagil in the Sverdlovsk region, it plays a crucial role in supplying tanks for Moscow's war in Ukraine, according to the Russian defence ministry.

The factory, which is run by a state conglomerate controlled by one of President Vladimir Putin's allies, has publicly spoken of producing T-90M battle tanks and modernising T-72B3M tanks.

The number of tanks which Russia has lost in battle in Ukraine is a military secret in Russia, which says it has ramped up tank production.

The London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies said in February that Russia had lost more than 3,000 tanks - the equivalent of its entire pre-war active inventory - but had enough lower-quality armoured vehicles in storage for years of replacements.
