On May 17, Russia's defence ministry confirmed the launch carried a spacecraft but did not provide details about its purpose.

US Space Command said the launch was a likely a counterspace weapon capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit.

According to the Interfax news agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying, "I don't think we should respond to any fake news from Washington.”

"The Americans can say whatever they want but our policy does not change from this," said Ryabkov, adding that Moscow had "always consistently opposed the deployment of strike weapons in low-Earth orbit."

While the US Space Command said the May launch included COSMOS 2576, a type of Russian military "inspector" spacecraft that US officials have long said exhibits reckless space behaviour.

According to a US official familiar with the intelligence, US intelligence agencies had anticipated the launch of COSMOS 2576 and informed allies of their assessment before the satellite was deployed. The launch also included civilian satellites placed into different orbits.&nbsp;

As of Tuesday, COSMOS 2576 has not approached any US satellites, but space analysts have observed it in the same orbital ring as USA 314, a bus-sized NRO satellite launched in April 2021.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Saturday (May 18) said that his country would invest over 2.3 billion euros ($2.5 billion) to strengthen its eastern border, the EU's eastern flank, against potential foes.

"We have taken the decision to invest 10 billion zlotys for our security and above all to secure our eastern border," he said, calling the project an "eastern shield".&nbsp;

Poland's eastern border comprises Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

While another drone attack caused a fire at a gas station in Bessonovka village, but the flames were quickly put out, according to the governor.

The Russian-controlled port of Sevastopol on the annexed Crimean peninsula experienced a "partial blackout" after debris from downed drones struck an electrical substation, according to the city's Russian-appointed governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev.

"During the ongoing restoration work, the city will face an energy shortage, leading to isolated blackouts," he cautioned, adding that schools would cancel classes.

It is worth mentioning that Russia had intercepted or destroyed more than 100 Ukrainian drones in the south of the country and over annexed Crimea and the Black Sea overnight.

Fifty-one drones were destroyed over Crimea, 44 over the Krasnodar region, six over the Belgorod region, six over the Black Sea and one over the Kursk region, according to the defence ministry statement.

The head of personnel at Russia's Defence Ministry has been arrested on suspicion of bribery after more than $1 million in cash and valuables were discovered at his properties, investigators said on Tuesday.

The arrest of Yuri Kuznetsov signals a widening of the biggest government corruption scandal in years, two days after President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly removed Sergei Shoigu from the post of defence minister.

The state Investigative Committee said Kuznetsov was suspected of "receiving a bribe on an especially large scale".

Kuznetsov could not be reached for comment. The charges against him and Ivanov, the former deputy minister, carry a jail term of up to 15 years.

Ivanov denies accusations that he received bribes worth $11 million in the form of property services from a construction company in return for contracts.

Even as questions remain why the US continued with this trade in spite of public pronouncements against Russia over Ukraine war, a waiver system could make this law practically dead on arrival.

A report earlier by S&amp;P Global had said that as per the waiver system, "companies with enriched uranium contracts with Russia can seek to continue to receive their material by demonstrating they do not have viable alternate sources of fuel or that continued deliveries are in the national interest."

A Reuters report seemed to suggest that under the waivers, if implemented by the Energy Department, Russian uranium imports to the US could continue normally through 2027.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia's ambassador to the United States, said that Washington's decision surprising in global economic relations, but will not bring any results.

"The balance between exporters and importers of uranium products is being disrupted," the Russian embassy in Washington cited Antonov as saying in a post on its Telegram messaging channel.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti has said that the United States had encouraged India to purchase Russian oil to stabilise global commodity prices. Speaking at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations last week, Ambassador Garcetti stated, "They brought Russian Oil because we wanted somebody to buy Russian oil at a price cap, that was not a violation. Both Moscow and Kyiv have denied that they target civilians, but the United Nations agency OHCHR, earlier this year, reported a total of 30,457 civilian casualties since the beginning of the&nbsp;war.&nbsp;

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, as per Reuters, said that the strike was a targeted attack on civilians which showed the criminality of both Ukraine and its allies in Europe and the United States.&nbsp;

On Sunday, Russia claimed that it captured four more villages – Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets, Oliinykove – in the Kharkiv region in Ukraine.

This comes a day after the Russian defence ministry said that its troops “liberated” five villages – Borisivka, Ogirtseve, Pletenivka, Pylna and Strilecha – in the Kharkiv region near the border with Russia “as a result of offensive actions”.

Moscow also claimed that the village of Keramik in the Donetsk region was also now under Russian control.

Russia launched an armoured incursion early on Friday (May 10), an attack on a new front which may lead to a broader push into the Kharkiv region.&nbsp;

In an update on the ongoing war, on Saturday (May 11), the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) highlighted what it called Russia’s “continued inability to successfully employ their munitions on intended targets.”

It added, “Such errors have destructive and lethal consequences for the Russian population.” Between March and April, Russia accidentally dropped around 20 munitions in Belgorod alone.&nbsp;

According to the report, a Russian fighter jet accidentally dropped a FAB-500 bomb on the border city. At least five people were left injured and around 30 houses were damaged as a result.&nbsp;

“This is not an isolated incident. On February 18, a FAB-250 was reportedly released on Soloti in the Belgorod area which led to the evacuation of 150 residents,” said the MoD.&nbsp;

A similar incident took place in January after what the Russian defence ministry had described at the time as an “abnormal discharge of aircraft ammunition” over the village of Petropavlovka in the southern region of Voronezh. The incident left four people injured and damaged some nine houses.&nbsp;

“As a result of a direct strike on the Paradise restaurant in Donetsk’s Kirov district, three civilians were killed: a woman who worked at the restaurant and two diners,” said Pushilin, adding that “сurrently we know of eight injured”.&nbsp;

Cameron on Thursday&nbsp;pledged over 3 billion pounds ($3.7 billion) of annual military aid for Ukraine, stating that the UK had no objection if Kyiv wanted to use British weapons against its targets in Russia.

"Ukraine has that right. Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it's defending itself," Cameron told news agency Reuters during a visit to Kyiv.

US and majority of EU nations to skip Putin's inauguration ceremony

An American soldier has been arrested in Russia charged with stealing, according to two US officials.

The soldier, identified as&nbsp;Staff Sgt Gordon Black, will be detained until July, a court in Vladivostok said on Tuesday (May 7).&nbsp;

Black was previously positioned in South Korea.

He was en route back to Fort Cavazos in Texas, his home base.

However, authorities reported that he made an unexpected detour to Russia.

Cynthia Smith, an army spokesperson, confirmed that on Thursday (May 2), a serviceman was taken into custody in Vladivostok, a significant commercial and military hub on the Pacific coast, due to allegations of unlawful behaviour.

The Russian authorities informed the United States, and the military subsequently reached out to the soldier's relatives.

Russia is currently holding a number of Americans in its jails, including corporate security executive Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

The US government has designated both as wrongfully detained and has been trying to negotiate their release.

It further said that the announcement made by Moscow was "evidence of the desperation of the Russian state machine and propaganda, which can think of no other way to attract attention".

Poland on Saturday (May 4) denounced Russia for its alleged cyberattacks reported by Germany and the Czech Republic stating that it was too targeted by the hackers.

Expressing solidarity with Germany and the Czech Republic, Poland's foreign ministry released a statement condemning the "harmful activities" carried out in cyberspace by Russian entities.

However, Warsaw did not provide any details regarding the attack in the statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated that he did not dismiss sending military troops to Ukraine, stating that the matter would "legitimately" come up if Russia barged through Ukrainian front lines and Kyiv called for such a move.

Macron made these remarks after he delivered a keynote speech last week where he said that Europe is "mortal" and could "die" partly due to the existential threat from Russian aggression.

"I'm not ruling anything out, because we are facing someone who is not ruling anything out," said Macron on being asked if he stood by his remarks earlier this year of not excluding the probability of&nbsp;sending&nbsp;Western troops to Ukraine.

Macron stated "if Russia decided to go further, we will in any case all have to ask ourselves this question" of sending military forces, describing his refusal to rule out such a move as a "strategic wake-up call for my counterparts".

He described Russia as "a power of regional destabilisation" and "a threat to Europeans' security".

"I have a clear strategic objective: Russia cannot win in Ukraine," Macron said.

"If Russia wins in Ukraine, there will be no security in Europe.&nbsp;

"Who can pretend that Russia will stop there? What security will there be for the other neighbouring countries, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania and the others?" he asked.

"Over the next decade... there is an immense risk of (Europe) being weakened or even relegated," he added, also pointing to the risk of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.&nbsp;

Macron said the risk is that Europe will experience a decline and that despite all the efforts "we are already starting to see this".

He said he stood by his comments, which he said were a policy of "strategic ambiguity".

"Do we have limits in ensuring the security of Europeans? No," he added.

The French president called on Europe to be more self-reliant saying that it should bring about a change as in the past, the continent was over-dependent on Moscow for energy and Washington for security.

He said the required "sine qua non" for European security was "that Russia does not win the war of aggression in Ukraine".

"We need to build this strategic concept of a credible European defence for ourselves," Macron said, adding Europe could not be "a vassal" of the United States.&nbsp;

Taking aim at Moscow's efforts to evade Western sanctions, including those imposed through China, the United States on Wednesday imposed hundreds of new restrictions on the Russian Federation in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, the US Treasury Department, along with&nbsp;the State Department, has imposed sanctions on several entities, including close to 200 targets, with over 80 designations specifically targeting Chinese companies.<o:p></o:p>

This marks one of the biggest actions against Chinese companies in the context of US sanctions against Russia. <o:p></o:p>

These measures come while tensions continue to escalate between Washington and Beijing over their respective stances on Russia's military operations.

The Treasury Department's sanctions include20 companies based in China and Hong Kong, a move that follows repeated warnings from Washington regarding China's alleged support for Russia's military endeavours, including during recent diplomatic visits by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to China. <o:p></o:p>

China, in response, has vehemently opposed what it terms as "illegal unilateral sanctions" by the US, with a spokesperson from China's embassy in Washington highlighting the country's adherence to relevant laws and regulations governing exports of dual-use articles. <o:p></o:p>

Treasury's actions on Wednesday targeted nearly 60 entities across various countries, including China, Russia, Turkey, and others, which were accused of enabling Russia's acquisition of essential technology and equipment. <o:p></o:p>

Among the sanctioned entities were a China-based company alleged to have exported components for drone production to Russia, further aggravating concerns over China's role in strengthening Russia's military capabilities.<o:p></o:p>

Moreover, the State Department's sanctions targeted several China-based companies for their purported support to Russia's defence industrial base, alongside entities from Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Malaysia implicated in shipping critical items to Russia. <o:p></o:p>

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, a senior State Department official noted that China's support in providing critical components to Russia's defence industry significantly fuels Moscow's ability to sustain its military operations.<o:p></o:p>

In addition to addressing Russia's military endeavours, the US has also expanded its sanctions to impede Russia's energy exports, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG).<o:p></o:p>

The State Department designated vessel operators involved in transporting equipment for Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project, further constraining Russia's capacity to advance its energy interests. <o:p></o:p>

US unleashes wave of sanctions, targets Russian circumvention via Chinese companies

Jareh Sebastian Dalke, a 32-year-old who briefly worked for the National Security Agency (NSA), was sentenced to over 21 years in prison on Monday (Apr 29) for trying to spy for Russia, the Justice Department said.

While being employed at the NSA for a short period, Dalke reportedly acquired classified documents. After leaving the agency, he allegedly attempted to sell them for $85,000 to someone he believed was a Russian agent, according to court documents.

In a statement on Sunday, Ukraine’s Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi addressed the worsening situation of Kyiv’s forces on the country’s eastern front and also expressed hope that it can stabilise it once the United States delivers more weapons as a part of its $61 billion aid package approved this week.

In a possibly concerning development, Syrskiy also said that the Ukrainian forces are also closely monitoring a build-up of Russian troops near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.&nbsp;

Ukraine’s top commander in his statement did not respond to Russia’s claims about Novobakhmutivka, another village near Berdychi, which the Russian defence ministry on Sunday, said its forces have captured.

Ukrainian forces pull back from 3 villages on eastern front; Zelensky issues fresh plea

Gabov and Karelin face a minimum of two years in prison and a maximum of six years for alleged “participation in an extremist organization,” according to the Russian courts.&nbsp;

Gabov will be held in pre-trial detention until June 27, while the details about Karelin’s detention are yet to be made public.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia’s crackdown on journalists</h2>

Both Gabov and Karelin have previously worked for DW and other international news organisations.&nbsp;

Karelin, 41, was working for DW as a cameraman until the German broadcaster was banned from operating in Russia. He has also worked for the AP.&nbsp;

“The Associated Press is very concerned by the detention of Russian video journalist Sergey Karelin,” said the news agency in a statement, adding that it is “seeking additional information.”

Meanwhile, Gabov is a freelance producer and has also worked for several organisations including Reuters, said the Russian court press service.&nbsp;

However, Reuters later released a statement saying that&nbsp;Gabov had previously "occasionally contributed to the Reuters news file," but "does not do any work for Reuters at this time."

He was DW’s correspondent in Moscow in 2019 and 2020. Gabov reportedly also worked for the Russian broadcasters Moskva 24 and MIR, and Belarusian news agency Belsat.&nbsp;

In recent years, Russia has ramped up its crackdown on dissent aimed at independent media, journalists, activists, and opposition figures.&nbsp;

Several journalists have been arrested for their coverage of Navalny, who died in an Arctic penal colony in February, including photographer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-stepping-up-persecution-of-last-independent-journalists-and-media-alleges-reporters-without-borders-706723">Antonina Favorskaya</a>.&nbsp;

Russia has intensified its aggression in Ukraine by sending more troops to the eastern town of Ocheretyne.

However, Kyiv's forces, which hold most part of the village, expect the arms delivery by the United States to help them win the battle, said the Ukrainian military on Saturday (Apr 27).

Russian armed forces have so far gradually progressed towards the eastern front in over half a dozen villages after seizing the bastion town of Avdiivka in the month of February.

Fighting erupted in Ocheretyne on Saturday, however, Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the eastern command, said that the Ukrainian forces had the situation under control and hold&nbsp;two-thirds of the village.

He said that the Ukrainian armed forces were able to bombard the part of the village captured by Russian forces and that "the enemy is blocked and measures are being taken to kick them out."

Towards the north, on the eastern front, the Russian forces were attempting to seize the town of Chasiv Yar, though they had not entered the town, he said.

Amid Russian advances, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday called for additional air defence systems to be sent to Kyiv in its fight against Moscow.&nbsp;

At the start of a virtual meeting led by the United States on helping arm Ukraine, Zelensky said, "This year, Russian jets (have) already used more than 9,000 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine and we need the ability to shoot down the air combat aircraft so that they do not approach our positions and borders."&nbsp;

"While we were waiting for a decision on the American support, the Russian army managed to seize the initiative on the battlefield," Zelensky said.

"We can still now, not only stabilize the front but also move forward achieving our Ukrainian goals in the war," he added.&nbsp;
