Apart from former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the other hopefuls are Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt, UK foreign secretary Liz Truss, Chairman of foreign affairs committee Tom Tugendhat and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch.

In the first round, Sunak secured 88 votes followed by Trade minister Penny Mordaunt at 67. Meanwhile, in the second round, Sunak maintained the lead with 101 votes followed by Mordaunt at 83 votes.

Sunak who is the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy is widely expected to make it to the final two candidates to be put to the party membership.

However despite the numbers on Sunak’s side, a snap YouGov poll of the Tory party has found that Trade minister Penny Mordaunt has a higher chance of winning the race than Sunak. Polls further suggest how Mordaunt is the bookie's favourite to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom. Betting odds claim that Mordaunt has a 50 per cent&nbsp;chance of winning the election compared to Sunak at 34.7 per cent.

Until the past few months, Sunak was seen as the frontrunner to succeed Johnson but his popularity has taken a hit after he introduced several policies like national insurance rise which went down with the Tory MPs. Apart from this, the revelation that his wife the multimillionaire Akshata Murthy held non-domicile status which helped her evade paying UK tax was also brought to the table. However, this particular issue was raised by Sunak in the second round of televised debate where he asserted how he was proud of Murthy’s family and all that they have achieved.

So far there have been two rounds of voting and two televised debates out of which Sunak and Truss have emerged as front runners with Penny Mordaunt placed at third. The last televised debate saw some of the fiercest clashes between Sunak and Truss whose divisions on the economy and ways and means to combat inflation were laid bare.

Meanwhile, there have also been reports that have emerged on how Boris Johnson has privately told Tories to back anyone but Rishi Sunak for the country’s top post.

Despite mud-slinging and backbiting, the United Kingdom will have its new prime minister on September 5.

Before the third round of voting by Tory MPs on Monday to further limit the field and get to the final two candidates, an instant opinion poll by Opinium indicated that Sunak was the undisputed winner of the discussion on Sunday.

At least one of the candidates with the fewest votes would be eliminated, and another round is anticipated on Tuesday. The former chancellor had the highest rating from the 1,001 participants in the Opinium survey—about 24%—followed by Tom Tugendhat, chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, with 19%. Penny Mordaunt, the minister of trade, came in third with 17%, followed by Liz Truss, the secretary of state, with 15%. The viewer poll placed former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch in last place with 12% of the votes.

However, a Conservative Home website poll of the party's grassroots members that was released on Sunday night indicates that Badenoch may be gaining in favour as she has emerged as their top choice, followed by Mordaunt.According to that poll, if Badenoch and Mordaunt made it to the final two, Badenoch would win in a head-to-head matchup 59 to 31 percent of the time. According to The Times newspaper, Johnson, who resigned as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7 after many of his cabinet ministers quit, has asked the failed candidates to make sure that Sunak does not become the prime minister.

Moreover, Johnson reportedly told the contenders that he would neither endorse anyone nor intervene in the contest.

According to the newspaper, this secret meeting is part of the “anyone but Rishi” hidden campaign that is being run by Johnson and his supporters.

The newspaper further reported that Johnson feels betrayed by Sunak, whose resignation triggered his exit even as he lost the support of his own party members.

However, Johnson felt that Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who has been endorsed by his fiercest cabinet allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries are able candidates to take the mantle of leadership of Conservative party, a source who had direct access to one of the conversations told the newspaper.

Johnson also reportedly indicated that he is open to Penny Mordaunt, the junior trade minister, succeeding him if it meant that Sunak is kept out of the race.

"The whole No.10 [Downing Street] team hates Rishi. It's personal. It's vitriolic. They don't blame Saj [Sajid Javid] for bringing him down. They blame Rishi. They think he was planning this for months," the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

How long does Boris Johnson stay?

The Conservative Party’s new leader who will succeed Boris Johnson as the new British PM will be announced on September 5. As the party has a majority in the UK Parliament, the winner of the party leadership vote would automatically become the PM.&nbsp;

Who gets to vote?&nbsp;

First of all, this is not a general election. This is an internal voting that would take place within the Conservative party that holds a majority in the UK Parliament.&nbsp;

The party would choose its leader through a two-stage selection process.&nbsp;

First would be a series of secret ballots where 358 Tory (colloquial term for conservative party members) MPs would vote in the first round.&nbsp;

As of now, former Chancellor Rishi Sunak has won the second round&nbsp;with 101 votes, followed by Penny Mordaunt,&nbsp;with 83 votes, and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss with 64 votes.&nbsp;

He also won the first round of voting with 88 votes, followed by trade minister Penny Mordaunt with 67 votes and foreign secretary Liz Truss with 50 votes.&nbsp;

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi,&nbsp;former health secretary Jeremy Hunt and&nbsp;Suella Braverman, the attorney general&nbsp;have been eliminated from the race.

Further ballots will take place in the following week, with the bottom-ranked candidate getting eliminated in each round.&nbsp;

The final round of voting happens with two candidates in a face-off. &nbsp;Around 1,60,000 Tory members would select their leader through postal ballot (voting through post or any electronic mode) as the next party leader and PM. 
The result will be announced on 5 September.

What exactly are hustings?&nbsp;

To put it in simple terms, the final two candidates will campaign for the second round of voting through the summer months. ‘Hustings’ is another term for these campaign events.&nbsp;

The ballot papers would be sent through post to Tory MPs in August.&nbsp;

As per age-old traditions, the outgoing PM appears before the House of Commons for the last time and then outside 10 Downing Street, before visiting Buckingham palace.&nbsp;

The outgoing PM places the resignation letter before the queen, after which a statement is released by the palace saying that the queen is “pleased to accept” the prime minister’s resignation.

After this, the departing PM’s car exits the palace and the one carrying the new PM will visit the queen. The new leader will seek permission from the Queen to form a new government. Once the queen accepts, the UK will have a new PM.&nbsp;

When further queried, he said that the Indian-born former chancellor was someone of "formidable ability who has been thinking about the right thing to do for our economy, for families up and down the country, very hard over the last two years".

The former minister remained hopeful of the current race saying that it produced an "excellent list of candidates" which proved that the Conservative Party was "modern and outward-looking".

"In a period when we need to rebuild trust with the electorate that shows we are in tune with modern Britain," he said.

Sunak won the first round of voting by MPs to choose the next Conservative leader and prime minister. He got 88 votes.

Trade minister Penny Mordaunt came second (&nbsp;67) and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was palced third (50).

Other rounds of voting are expected to take in the next few days with the remaining candidates Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and Suella Braverman.

The final two will then be elected through a ballot of Conservative Party members. The result is expected on September 5.

The race for next leadership comes after Johnson announced his resignation last week, months after receiving criticism over lockdown parties in Downing Street and other issues.

The next British leader faces a daunting in-tray while support for the Conservatives is also falling, polls show.

Britain's economy is facing rocketing inflation, high debt, and low growth as people grapple with the tightest squeeze on their finances in decades. All of this is set against a backdrop of an energy crunch exacerbated by the war in&nbsp;Ukraine which has sent fuel prices soaring.

As the contest intensifies, rival campaigns stepped up private criticism of each other and pointed to either financial or other questions hanging over their opponents.

Sunak kicked off his campaign by portraying himself as the serious candidate, promising "grown-up" honesty "not fairy tales", seeking to contrast himself with the extensive tax&nbsp;cuts pledged by most of the other&nbsp;candidates.

"It is not credible to promise lots more spending and lower taxes," Sunak said, saying tax&nbsp;cuts could only come after soaring inflation was tackled.

As finance minister, Sunak set Britain on course to have its biggest tax burden since the 1950s after he oversaw a huge rise in government spending during the coronavirus pandemic, and most of the other hopefuls have turned their fire on him by saying they would oversee&nbsp;cuts immediately.

Dirty tricks

Sunak has the widest support among colleagues who have publicly expressed their view.

Penny Mordaunt, a junior trade minister who is also heavily tipped, topped a poll of Conservative party members and she too has tried to strike a more measured tone on tax, saying that now is not the time to&nbsp;cut&nbsp;government spending.

"The others will obviously try to secure votes, they will try to put up flares for particular caucuses," she told LBC radio. "This is not the time to be making radical tax policies and promises."

Attorney General Suella Braverman; the former health and foreign minister Jeremy Hunt; Tom Tugendhat, chair of parliament's foreign affairs committee; and Kemi Badenoch, a former junior minister who is scooping up support on the right wing of the party, are the other&nbsp;candidates&nbsp;to enter the first round of the contest.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps earlier became the first candidate to end his bid, throwing his support behind Sunak, while Home Secretary (interior minister) Priti Patel announced she would not be standing.

Foreign Secretary Truss received the backing of two ministers closest to&nbsp;Johnson&nbsp;- Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg - who have both been critical of Sunak.

Dorries accused Sunak of using "dirty tricks" to manipulate the leadership contest, with votes being loaned to Hunt's campaign because they view him as easier to beat.

Sunak's team did not respond to a request for comment.

The 1922 Committee of Conservative members of parliament which is organising the contest says the field will soon be whittled down with repeated votes in the next few weeks, with the final two then selected by the fewer than 200,000 party members by July 21.

The winner, and Britain's new prime minister, will be announced on Sept. 5.

Meanwhile, the opposition Labour Party said the government was "running scared" after it blocked an attempt to call a confidence vote in&nbsp;Johnson&nbsp;on Wednesday to force him from office immediately.

The government said Labour was trying to "play politics" and it would allow Labour to call a confidence vote if the wording of the motion was changed to remove reference to&nbsp;Johnson.

Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservatives' influential 1922 Committee, told reporters: "We do need to make sure there is a decent amount of time before the result is announced on 5th September."&nbsp;

Brady revealed details of the party leadership election timetable. He also said that that the nominations would open and close on Tuesday with the first votes on Wednesday and Thursday. He further mentioned that all candidates will need 20 backers to be included in the first round of voting.&nbsp;

After a slew of scandals, Johnson announced last Thursday (July 7) that he would quit as prime minister, but stay in the post until his successor was chosen.&nbsp;

Johnson said he was "sure the outcome will be good" and "whoever takes over" would inherit "a great agenda to be continued."
