<p>“Be in little question, I’m the underdog,” Sunak said in a speech in Grantham, central England, on Saturday according to Reuters.</p>

<p>Sunak led the leadership race in all five rounds and was able to hold his lead over the other contenders. The final vote to pick a successor for Boris Johnson will take place on September 5.</p>

<p>Sunak was one of the first major leaders to step down from their cabinet positions due to their differences with Johnson and that led to a party-wide revolt. It proved too much for Johnson as he was forced to step down from his position despite surviving a no-confidence vote.</p>

<p>What a rollercoaster ride British citizens have been on since Brexit, COVID-19 and now the fatal energy blow being delivered to hardworking families in this country. From April this year electricity and gas tariffs have gone up by over 50 per cent&nbsp;on average, thanks in part to the price cap being removed by Ofgem and a free for all in a capitalist energy market. The working poor, pensioners, benefit claimants and ordinary folks will have to make a serious choice of whether to feed themselves and their families or heat their homes to keep everyone warm and comfortable. A disgrace for the United Kingdom as it belongs to the G7 club of rich nations.</p>

<p>While rising energy prices will affect most households across the country, they are more likely to disproportionately affect those on the lowest incomes. In the financial year ending in 2020, the poorest 10 per cent&nbsp;of households spent more than half (54 per cent) of their average weekly expenditure (£298.90) on essentials such as housing (including electricity and gas), food and transport. Those in the richest 10 per cent, in comparison, spend 42 per cent&nbsp;of their average weekly spend of £1,073.20 on the same essentials. As usual, during any economic crisis, it’s the working class that suffers the most and are often blamed, even though it’s the fault of our elected politicians and their lobbyist friends and donors.</p>

<p>A perfect storm is brewing for many households in Scotland as a decrease in wages, increase in high food prices, and from April a massive energy price hike. Rishi Sunak, ex-chancellor and now an aspiring prime minister, has not extended the £20 Universal Credit last year as that would have help cushioned the impact a little. The current rate of pay and benefits don’t fit well with a rich nation like the UK. Prepayment meters will see the highest price rise and they are mostly used by the poor and most vulnerable in our society. It beggars’ belief that the citizenry can be so easily misled and benefit claimants scapegoated again and again for the deals made by politicians to rob the taxpayers via their friends and families' companies which are setup simply to steal money officially through various tax havens.</p>

<p>Overall, considering predicted energy price increases alongside a reduction in real wages and the planned increase in national insurance contributions, the Resolution Foundation feared a “living standards catastrophe” in 2022. It is estimated that taxes and energy bills would have risen by an average of £1,200 per household since April 2022 under current government plans.</p>

On the other hand, Truss said she was “not complacent at all”. She said: “What I believe is that lowering taxes, opening up opportunities, is going to help us deliver the economic growth that Britain needs. And it’s also going to help deliver us the next election.”&nbsp;<br />

While selecting the final name, the party members will also consider how both candidates would approach some of the key issues as Sunak wants to tackle surging inflation and Britain’s pandemic debts. <p>Since the beginning of his campaign, when he told the tale of his Indian family's 1960s emigration from East Africa, he has made an effort to find a balance between the personal and the professional.</p>

<p>Rishi was born in Southampton in 1980 and went to Winchester College, a prominent elite school. He worked part-time as a waiter at Southampton Curry House over the summer. Later, he went to Oxford University to study politics, philosophy, and economics.</p>

<p>After serving as a Conservative MP for Richmond in Yorkshire since 2015, he was appointed as a junior minister in Theresa May's administration. Johnson appointed him chief secretary to the Treasury in 2019 and gave him a promotion to chancellor in February 2020.</p>

<p>Rishi resigned this month despite always being an outspoken backer of Johnson's ideas, claiming that his own method of handling the economy was "fundamentally" different from that of the PM.</p>

<p>Additionally, Rishi has openly identified as a "proud Hindu." He has claimed that, despite referring to himself as "thoroughly British," his religious and cultural ancestry is "Indian," just like that of his wife, and that "he is upfront about being a Hindu."<br />

<p>With longshot candidate Kemi Badenoch trailing on 59 and therefore eliminated from the contest, Sunak garnered 118 votes.</p>

<p>In the second place was former defence minister Penny Mordaunt on 92 followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 86.</p>

<p>The UK will either get its third female leader or its first British Asian prime minister as a result of the vote.</p>

<p>The ministry in a statement stated that the minister will commit to, “repeal hundreds of pieces of retained EU law and replacing them with a coherent and agile approach to financial regulation that is right for us."</p>
