Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said it was "within reach" for Sweden to join in time for the July 11-12 NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

"There are no guarantees but it's absolutely possible to reach a solution and enable the decision on full membership for Sweden by then," Stoltenberg told reporters in Oslo on the eve of a NATO foreign ministers' meeting to prepare for the summit.

Sweden and Finland changed their neutral stance last year after Russian invasion of Ukraine and applied to become members of NATO. However, the decision to induct a new member must be taken unanimously by existing members. Turkey allowed Finland to become NATO member in April but it is still blocking Sweden's bid.

Turkey has been raising the issue of Kurdish militants.

<h2>'Sweden is ready'</h2>

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that that the Swedish government has already addressed Turkey's concerns.

"There is no reason for any further time. Sweden is ready now," Blinken told a news conference with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in the northern Swedish city of Lulea.

"We urge both Turkey and Hungary -- which also has not yet ratified -- to ratify the accession as quickly as possible," he said.

The State Department said that Blinken raised Sweden's case with Turkey in a telephone call with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. The issue had also come up during phone conversation between US President Joe Biden and Turkish President Erdogan. Biden had called Erdogan to congratulate him on his election victory.

Blinken said the United States wants the process to be "completed in the weeks ahead" but stopped short of saying if he was certain it would be finished by the summit.

<h2>Turkey's unhappiness</h2>

Erdogan has in past expressed his displeasure against Sweden's generous asylum policies and has accused the country of giving shelter to 'terrorists' from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The PKK is outlawed in Turkey.

The topic came to the fore as late as Monday, when the pro-Kurdish Rojava Committee of Sweden posted an anti-Erdogan video on social media. The video showed a PKK flag being projected onto the Swedish parliament.

Stoltenberg said he was in "constant contact" with Turkish authorities to try to lift the final obstacles to Sweden's accession.

Turkey's main opposition party has filed complaints over suspected irregularities at thousands of ballot boxes in Sunday's landmark election, in which President Tayyip Erdogan performed better than expected.

“We don’t know yet whether the election will be over in the first round, but if people take us to a second round, we will respect that too," Erdogan told his supporters, adding that his ruling conservative alliance had won a “majority" in parliament.

While Erdogan took a conservative position, his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu rattled the cage once again and said the president had not received the result he was expecting.&nbsp;

"Despite all his smear campaigns and insults, Erdogan did not get the result he expected. Nobody should get excited about a fait accompli," said Kilicdaroglu.&nbsp;

"Elections are not won on the balcony (referring to Erdogan's speech). Election data still continues to come. If our nation decides on a runoff, with our pleasure. We will definitely win this election in the second round. Everyone will see it."

Sinan Ogan, the third presidential candidate who has allied with Erdogan, took to Twitter late on Sunday to cast aspersions over the overseas vote-counting process.

"We have heard that some manipulations were carried out in the overseas vote counting processes. Vote counting is not done in a healthy environment. I warn the YSK. Take the necessary measures immediately and ensure that the vote counting processes are carried out quickly," Ogan tweeted.&nbsp;

"In addition, we will not allow a fait accompli with a manipulation of foreign votes. Do not stress the environment. This is up to the second round."

Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas, who is running for the vice-president post as a candidate for the&nbsp;main opposition Nation Alliance bloc, stated that Anadolu’s results were unreliable. He said the opposition data showed&nbsp;Kilicdaroglu as being ahead of Erdogan.

Meanwhile, Turkey's High Election Board gave Erdogan 49.49 per cent with 91.93 per cent&nbsp;of ballot boxes counted.

The White House, on Monday, said that United States President&nbsp;Joe Biden is "looking forward to working with whoever"&nbsp;wins Turkey's&nbsp;knife-edge election as the NATO ally holds peaceful elections.

"We congratulate the Turkish people for expressing their desires at the ballot box in a peaceful way," said&nbsp;National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

The pivotal, crucial election could have significant consequences for the country's future, it could extend the current President's two-decade grip on power or put the mostly Muslim nation on a more secular course. As per preliminary results, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took an early lead.

Turkish state news agency Anadolu showed the incumbent president picking up more than 51 per cent of the vote, while his main challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu trailed&nbsp;with around 43 per cent.

Anadolu's figures, as per AFP, were based on 60 per cent of the ballots. However, Kilicdaroglu, in a tweet, claimed that his party's own vote count showed him winning.

"We are leading," he wrote.

A count by the pro-opposition Anka news site showed that the two leaders were tied, falling just short of the 50-per cent threshold needed to avoid a May 28 runoff.&nbsp;

Both Anka and Anadolu show third-party candidate Sinan Ogan was picking up five per cent of the vote.

"We are seeing a positive picture, according to our data," opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) spokesman Faik Oztrak told the press.&nbsp;

He added that they would not release any numbers until the number of opened ballot boxes reach a meaningful level.

"We will start to give the numbers when the number of opened ballot boxes reaches a meaningful level."

Kilicdaroglu, the 74-year-old opposition leader, had a slight advantage over Erdogan in most pre-election polls.&nbsp;

Pre-poll predictions also indicated that the former civil servant will win the youth vote, which counts for nearly 10 per cent of the electorate by a two-to-one margin.

As per Reuters, based on partial results, sources from both camps suggest neither of the main contenders will reach the 50 per cent threshold required for an outright win and that Turkish presidential elections will probably head for a runoff vote on May 28th.

The outcome of the presidential vote in Turkey will determine more than just the country's leader. Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was the star guest of Kilicdaroglu's rally. Imamoglu was presidential hopeful until a court effectively barred him from higher office in a case stemming from his 2019 victory.&nbsp;

The general election in Turkey would be held on May 14. This election is the toughest test for President Erdogan's 20-year rule.&nbsp;

As quoted by the news agencies, Robert Holden, who is WHO's earthquake response incident manager, said that the focus was on saving lives but insisted it was "imperative to make sure that those who survived the initial disaster... continue to survive".&nbsp;

Ibrahim Kalin, the foreign policy advisor of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters, "Turkey is willing to push for local ceasefires and small localised de-escalations. Neither party is in a position to win the war militarily, on the ground," a report by news agency AFP said. Kalin conceded it seemed unlikely that Moscow and Kyiv were ready to strike an "overarching peace deal" in the coming months.

However, the advisor pointed out that the brutal cost of fighting might soon see the warring sides reconsider and accept localised truces in specific parts of the war zone.

Akar said on December 27 last year that the war will not end easily despite Turkey's efforts to arrange peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.&nbsp;

The war in Ukraine will soon enter its 12th month with President Volodymyr Zelensky wanting to visit the United Nations and address a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the eve of the first anniversary of Russia's offensive.

The White House said on Tuesday (November 15) that United States President Joe Biden and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the international efforts focused on the export of Ukrainian grain.&nbsp;

The leaders met on the sidelines of a G20 summit, which is underway in Bali, Indonesia and talked about bilateral relations, including trade and security issues.&nbsp;

Regarding the grain talks, Biden-Erdogan's meeting discussed the deal to ship Ukrainian grain exports safely out across the Black Sea for world markets.&nbsp;

Amasra – situated on the northern coast of the Black Sea – is a hot spot for such incidents and on Saturday, a build-up of flammable gases in the mine ultimately resulted in an explosion.&nbsp;

The authorities were deployed to bring the situation under control and even Erdogan rushed to the spot to take note of the situation along with a three-man investigation team. However, the suggestion from the president that the incident was a result of “fate” did not go down with the people of Turkiye.&nbsp;

His talks with Zelensky and visiting UN chief Antonio Guterres—both men's first since Russia's February invasion—came with global alarm rising about fighting that has raged around Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

The Russian-held facility has been experiencing days of shelling.

"We are worried. We do not want another Chernobyl," said the Turkish leader.

Erdogan only mentioned Putin once in his comments to reporters.

"We discussed the exchange of prisoners of war and our initiatives in this regard," Erdogan said.

"We will continue to talk about that with Putin."
