The extreme rainfall that triggered devastating floods across Germany and Belgium in July was made “up to nine times more likely” due to climate change, a research study has noted, giving credence to findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report that warned of extreme weather events.

The study has also pointed out that human-made global warming has caused downpours in the region up to 20% heavier.

Germany and Belgium join a list of other countries that have been facing floods and extreme weather events. In the past one month, there were floods in China, extreme heatwaves in northwest America and forest fires in Russia, Greece, Turkey and the US.

The report, compiled by 39 scientists, used meteorological measurements, high-resolution computer models and peer-reviewed research methods. It compared the frequency of extreme rainfall that occurred in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in today’s heated climate with the frequency expected in a world where there had been no human-caused climate change.

It found the climate crisis has made extreme rainfall between 1.2 and nine times more likely to happen and that such downpours in the region are now 3% to 19% more intense.

“The huge human and economic costs of these floods are a stark reminder that countries around the world need to prepare for more extreme weather events and that we urgently need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid such risks from getting even further out of hand,” Prof Maarten van Aalst, who is one of the who conducted the research, told the Guardian.

Over 222 people were killed in flooding in Germany and Belgium.

On August 9, the IPCC came out with a damning assessment on global warming, saying that extreme heatwaves, droughts, and flooding, are going to be more pronounced in this decade.

The 3,000-plus-page report said global warming is already accelerating sea-level rise and worsening extremes such as heatwaves, droughts, floods and storms. Tropical cyclones are getting stronger and wetter, while Arctic sea ice is dwindling in the summer and permafrost is thawing.

All of these trends will get worse, the report said.

Climate change made deadly Europe floods up to nine times more likely: Study

Heavy rainfall activity is expected over north and east India during the next three-four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The low pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh has become less marked. However, the associated cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood persists.

Another cyclonic circulation lies over North Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around July 28.

Due to the influence of these two systems, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh till July 29 and its intensity will reduce thereafter.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on July 27 and 28 and over northwest Uttar Pradesh on July 27.

Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely to continue over east Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh till July 26 and reduce thereafter.

There will be an enhanced rainfall activity with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and isolated heavy to very heavy falls likely over east and adjoining central India including Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand from July 27.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls are very likely over Konkan, Goa, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra during the next three days and increase to isolated heavy to very heavy falls over the region from July 29.

Scores of lives have been lost due to landslides and floods in Maharashtra in the last two weeks.

Over 120 dead in western Europe after record rainfall wreaks havoc

In a new revelation, a study found that planting extra trees could help in contributing to rainfall in the UK. The study says that converting agricultural land to the forest would boost summer rains by 7.6 per cent on average.

Also, researchers found that adding trees changed rainfall patterns far downwind of the new forests. The authors believe that extra rain could partially offset the rise in dry conditions expected with climate change.

As per Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the UK is aiming to plant some 30 million new trees every year by 2025.

In this study, the authors used an observation-based statistical model to estimate how changes to forest cover would impact rainfall across the continent.

It was then concluded that there was a 20 per cent increase in the forest, uniformly across Europe. Also, this would boost local rainfall, especially in winter and with greater impacts felt in coastal regions.

However, in the case of local rain, the planting of new forests causes impacts downwind. It was found that rainfall in these locations was increased particularly in the summer months.

Ronny Meier from ETH Zurich deemed it as a 'significant finding'.

While speaking to BBC News, he said, "Probably the most threatening climate change signal that we expect in relation to percipitation, is this decrease in summer precipitation that is expected in the southern parts of Europe like the Mediterranean".

He further added, "And there, according to our study, forestation would lead to an increase in precipitation. So the forestation would probably be very beneficial in terms of adapting to the adverse effects of climate change".

IMD to issue long range forecast for south-west monsoon season rainfall today

Monsoon is expected to be normal in rainfall season, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday in its forecast.

"This year we will have a normal monsoon. Quantitatively the monsoon rainfall, during the monsoon season 2020, is expected to be 100% of its long period average with an error of +5 or -5% due to model error," said Madhavan Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).

India is reeling from COVID 19 pandemic and a bad monsoon could affect the agrarian supply chain. The Indian government has already relaxed rules for agrarian workers so that grains can be harvested.

A good monsoon can buffer inflation and ensure availability of grain in rural areas. It also ensures that farmers retain purchasing power which has got seriously affected because of a nationwide lockdown.

The year 2019 witnessed a normal monsoon season while in 2018, the monsoon registered a 9% deficit.

However, residents of Kashmir Valley got respite from intense cold wave conditions, with the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording a minimum temperature of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius as against the previous night's minus 3 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley in south Kashmir, settled at a low of minus 0.7 degrees Celsius, an increase of nearly six notches from the previous night's minus 6.4 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Pahalgam settled at a low of minus 3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature in Kokernag was 2 degrees Celsius. The Valley might witness light rains or snow over the next three days.

A thick blanket of fog enveloped several places in Punjab and Haryana over which numbing cold maintained its grip, with Chandigarh, the joint capital of the two states, recording a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius.

Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in both the states as it registered its low at 2.3 degrees Celsius.

Both Amritsar and Ludhiana shivered at 5.1 degrees Celsius while Patiala recorded a low of 5.5 degrees Celsius. Pathankot, Halwara, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur registered minimum temperatures at 6.5 degrees Celsius, 3.2 degrees Celsius, 3.6 degrees Celsius, 4.6 degrees Celsius and 7.3 degrees Celsius.

In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal recorded cold weather conditions at 5.2 degrees Celsius, 4.8 degrees Celsius and 5.4 degrees Celsius respectively, up to three degrees below normal.

Dense fog was also witnessed in parts of Uttar Pradesh where Bahraich was the coldest place with the mercury dipping to 4.4 degrees Celsius.

Lucknow recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 21 degrees Celsius. The meteorological department has forecast rains and thundershowers at many places in the state on Monday and Tuesday.

Rajasthan's Sikar shivered at 4.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Sriganganagar 6.5 degrees Celsius and Churu 6.8 degrees Celsius. The weatherman has predicted light rainfall in Jaipur and Bikaner divisions till tomorrow.

A cyclonic circulation over parts of Rajasthan and south Gujarat may cause light, unseasonal rains in Saurashtra region and in Vadodara district which may lead to rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees, followed by a gradual fall in minimum temperatures over another two days.

Naliya in Kutch district recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Gujarat at 10 degrees Celsius while Gandhinagar registered a low of 11 degrees Celsius, Keshod 11.6 degrees Celsius, Deesa 11.4 degrees Celsius and Ahmedabad 12.9 degrees Celsius.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will receive widespread rains in the next two days owing to a depression that lay off the Comorin area of the Indian Ocean. There is a possibility of it turning into a deep depression and form as a Cyclone, said Balachandran, South Zone Head of the Indian Meteorological Department in Chennai.

The depression brewing in the Comorin area of the Indian Ocean coincides with extremely severe cyclonic storm Kyarr in the Arabian Sea that is to turn into a very severe cyclonic storm by Wednesday night and a severe cyclonic storm by Thursday night, thus causing rough sea conditions in the region.

Over the last 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall has occurred across 80 places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Tiruttani in Tiruvallur district received the maximum of 19cm rainfall. Wednesday was declared as a rain holiday for schools and colleges in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Theni, Virudhunagar, Vellore and Ramanathapuram.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have recorded 20 centimetres rainfall for October which is 14 per cent higher than the usual 17 centimetres for the period. While the ideal date for the onset of monsoon is generally October 20, this year it has made the onset 4 days in advance on the October 16.

“Currently the depression lay 220 kilometres South West of Thiruvananthapuram and over the next 24 hours it is expected to intensify into a deep depression and it could move North westwards towards Lakshadweep. If this depression gains strength and intensifies into a cyclone, it will be called ‘Maha’, as named by Oman,” Balachandran added.

Heavy rain is expected to lash 21 districts in Tamil Nadu including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Trichy, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, besides delta district and those adjoining the Western Ghats.

Though the Southwest monsoon, that typically starts by June, caters to the needs of a large part of the country. The Northeast monsoon is crucial for Tamil Nadu as over 60 per cent of the coastal districts’ rainfall is brought in by the Northeast monsoon, while it brings around 40-50 per cent of the rainfall for the state’s interior districts.
