As Congress leader Rahul Gandhi continues his offensive against the Central government over Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister RK Singh on Wednesday accused him of acting against the interests of the country.

"Rahul Gandhi does not understand what is going on and is acting against the interest of India and Kashmir. Article 370 disrupted the development of the region and gave leeway to Pakistan financed separatists to operate in the region," Singh told.

The Congress leader had earlier said that there was unrest in Jammu and Kashmir due to the media and communications blackout and heightened security.

"The Parliament has made several laws for the development of the country which was not implemented in the region due to Article 370. The situation was in fact worse before Article 370 was scrapped. People used to pelt stones and hoist ISIS flags," Singh said.

He added that curfews and communication bans were also implemented before the special status was scrapped.

Singh also hit out at Pakistan and said that if the neighbouring country gets aggressive, they will get a befitting response.

"I don`t think Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will choose a military approach with India. We have defeated the country time and time again. Pakistan is already in a crisis. We should not give heed to them," the union minister said.

He also said that the only thing left to do in Kashmir if free the (Pakistan) occupied Kashmir.

The Centre is also keen on early assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Sonia Gandhi is into her fifth term as Lok Sabha MP. She will be interim chief pending the election of a regular President by the AICC.

She commands respect, trust, and loyalty of party leaders workers across the generational divide and that is expected to help in taking any tough decisions.

Rahul Gandhi was on Saturday granted bail by a Patna court in connection with a defamation case filed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi over his 'all thieves have Modi surname'&nbsp;remark.

Gandhi was released on Rs 10,000 surety amount by Patna court.

Here, Gandhi was indirectly referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bank-fraud accused Nirav Modi and former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi.

The Congress on Friday termed the Budget 2019 as 'old wine in a new bottle', claiming that there was nothing new in the budget.

"This is old wine in new bottle. They have walked back on all their old promises. People's misery is only going to increase. There is nothing new in this budget," Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told the media in Parliament.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her first Budget in Lok Sabha today. 'Reform, perform is the mantra of NDA government,' the finance minister said in her opening remarks.

Before presenting her budget, Sitharaman bowed before her parents who were present in the House.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders congratulated the finance minister for her maiden budget. Opening his post-budget address, the prime minister said that the budget "has given hope to the country".

"It testifies that the path we are on is right and that we will reach our target," PM Modi said, adding that the budget will help facilitate the creation of 'New India'.&nbsp;

''I thought 40 were enough to take on BJP. Now we have 52 MPs. Our MPs will fight BJP every single day,'' said Congress president who was also present at the CPP meet.

''Maybe we will not get enough time in the House but even those two minutes would be enough to put down BJP,'' he added.

Rahul thanked the voters and addressed the Congress party workers, saying, "Every Congress member must remember that each one of you is fighting for the Constitution, for every person in India irrespective of the colour of his skin or belief", party spokesperson Surjewala said.

With this degree of performance, can Rahul Gandhi continue to successfully function as the leader of the biggest opposition party? Should he quit and make way for some other deserving candidate? Congress will also have to grapple with these issues intensely if it wants to remain relevant in the political process.

Congress will also have to grapple with BJP's gains in West Bengal, North East and Odisha where Congress has come third and BJP has occupied the space of the opposition party. Congress has lost states consistently since the 1960s and BJP, on the other hand, expanded into non-traditional areas like South and East India. Today BJP stands neck to neck with Mamta Banerjee in West Bengal which could not have been imagined when BJP's vote share increased in 2014 elections. Today Mamta is staring at an electoral rout in assembly elections. BJP also defeated the caste matrix in UP by defeating Mahagathbandhan, demonstrating that opportunistic alliances do not work.

There are many reasons why Congress failed. It looks like, Rafale, 'NYAY' and 'Chowkidar Chor Hai' campaign did not work at all. More than that, Congres in comparison with BJP-RSS combine lacked a clear ideological core. After 2009, BJP switched back to the idea of undivided Hindu vote. Congress, on the other hand, shifted from one issue to another.&nbsp;

It also under-estimated the power of positive feeling associated with the spirit of nationalism. But, is it fair to say that Congress is a dead party? I would say no.&nbsp;Congress still has a future but would definitely require a different leadership model. Maybe a different leader? But at present, Congress cannot function as it has in past if it wants to survive.

This election has drawn a difference between Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi.&nbsp;If people invested faith in Modi they also chose to reject Rahul as the Prime Ministerial candidate. He was not taken seriously by the electorate. It should worry Congress as indifference in any relationship kills and this is politics. The election has punctured the myth of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's political acumen as well.

The defeat has also put the government of Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh in danger. These are the developments of tomorrow but one can say for sure that Congress under Rahul Gandhi has failed once again.&nbsp;

Losing to Smriti Irani in Amethi has dealt a major blow to the credibility of Rahul Gandhi. For long he would be considered a non-performing MP. His massive lead in Wayanad would never ever compensate for the loss in Amethi. 
 
To put it neatly, Narendra Modi has defeated Rahul Gandhi with a resounding mandate both in India and in their family bastion.

The victory has proven that BJP's support base is both urban and rural. It has become truly a pan Indian party, removing Congress from its hegemonic position. This change will have a profound impact on Indian politics. For the millennials, it would represent a departure from Congress dominated India to BJP dominated India.

In this election, Congress has failed to touch triple digit which shows that revamp programme was an utter failure.

This mandate allows Modi, a great playing field in diplomacy and economy. A lot of reforms were expected after 2014 but they did not happen. One can only hope that this time he reforms the system so that the animal spirit of the economy can be unleashed.

Aviation regulator DGCA has initiated a probe into the incident of the plane carrying Congress President Rahul Gandhi suffering engine trouble, a senior official said.

The plane on way to Patna was forced to return to Delhi on Friday after experiencing "engine trouble".

The senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official said the Hawker 850 XP aircraft VT-KNB returned back to Delhi after take-off due to a technical snag.

"DGCA has initiated investigation as per the laid down procedure," he told PTI.

The aircraft landed safely in Delhi at 1020 hours. There were ten people on board including two crew members, the official said.

On Twitter, Gandhi posted a video of the flight which shows him, the pilot and the co-pilot in the plane.

"Engine trouble on our flight to Patna today! We've been forced to return to Delhi," he tweeted.&nbsp;

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said opposition leaders seeking proof of the Balakot airstrike should have been strapped to rockets so that they could have "seen with their own eyes.

State BJP minister Pankaja Munde had also made a similar remark recently about sending Congress president Rahul Gandhi to another country with a bomb strapped to him.

"We should have strapped some of the sceptical opposition leaders to the rocket, so that they could have seen with their own eyes," Fadnavis said at a poll rally at Virar in adjoining Palghar district Monday.

The opposition keeps doubting this government's performance and even raises question mark over the armed forces and their courage, he said.

"What can we say about the opposition 'mahakhichadi' (grand mixture). They did not acknowledge the courage of our air force and raised doubts on Balakot air strike.

"Had there been an inkling about doubts from the opposition, we could have strapped their leaders to the rockets which were sent to Balakot to see the attack with their own eyes," Fadnavis said.

Munde, minister for women and child development, at a poll rally in Jalna district last week made similar comments against Gandhi.

"Whoever is raising such doubts on effectiveness of the air strike, I would like to say, Rahul Gandhi should be tied to a bomb and dropped to another country. I think only then they (opposition) will understand what we have done."&nbsp;

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said opposition leaders seeking proof of the Balakot airstrike should have been strapped to rockets so that they could have "seen with their own eyes. "What can we say about the opposition 'mahakhichadi' (grand mixture). They did not acknowledge the courage of our air force and raised doubts on Balakot air strike. "Had there been an inkling about doubts from the opposition, we could have strapped their leaders to the rockets which were sent to Balakot to see the attack with their own eyes," Fadnavis said. The Congress chief said the prime minister should have the guts to face the media and asked why Modi was "hiding".

He asked the gathering, "Did you like demonetisation?"

When the audience answered, "No", he said, "I think it's pretty clear the damage demonetisation did. PM should have taken your advice." 
Gandhi, who asked the students to challenge him and "make him uncomfortable", also questioned whether the prime minister could stand in a large audience and answer people's questions.

"So I thought that at least from my side, I should show him some affection."

When Rahul said, "I genuinely feel love for the Prime Minister," the students broke into laughter and raised their voices, to which he repeated "I genuinely do (love him)."

The Congress leader, participating in his first such interaction during his one-day tour of Tamil Nadu, said people who do not have affection towards others are the ones who are not loved. "... And that was why he (Modi) generates anger," he claimed.

Asserting that the party is not helpless for power, the editorial said there are several questions - like why did it ally with the BJP despite differences in 2014, will the Ram Temple be constructed, will there be Sena's chief minister - and their answers are "positive".

Instead of replying to questions on the alliance, it is better that the "arrangement" made for the benefit of Maharashtra is taken ahead, it said.

The Marathi daily said BJP president Amit Shah himself came to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's suburban residence 'Matoshree'. Thackeray told him what he had to and it was finally decided to give the alliance another chance.

Maintaining that there was no enmity between the Sena and the BJP, it said if (Bihar chief minister and JD-U head) Nitish Kumar could join the NDA despite differences of opinion with Modi and if the Congress could forge a "mahagathbandhan" (grand alliance), then the Sena has always been a part of the BJP-led coalition.

The Sena said there was resentment in 2014 against the Congress and its allies and there was a "wave" in favour of Modi.

No talks of Rafale with Rahul Gandhi: Manohar Parrikar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not taken a day’s leave during his tenure so far, Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma claimed as he took a swipe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his mother and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for their vacation in Goa.&nbsp;

The Gandhis’ trip, described as a “private visit” by the party, came into the public domain when Rachna Fernandes, a local resident, posted a photo of herself with Rahul Gandhi and said she was “awed by his charm and modesty”.&nbsp;

In response to a question by reporters on the trip. Sharma said, “Our Prime Minister has not taken leave even for one day during his four-and-a-half-year tenure.

(Whereas) it is a matter of research where these people go when they are on vacation.”&nbsp;

Accusing the Congress of double standards, Sharma said the party wants to portray itself as a national party, but it essentially remains a “mother-son party”.&nbsp;

“On one hand they say they want to remove corruption and on the other hand have become icons of corruption. On one hand, they talk of security of women and on the other behave in this manner,” Sharma said, referring to an incident in which former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah was caught on video involved in a verbal spat with a woman during a public interaction in Mysuru. In the video which has gone viral, the Congress leader is seen snatching the microphone from her and in the process, taking off her dupatta.

The Union minister further alleged that the Congress President was “immature” and that “no one takes him seriously” and said that the opposition party does not want strong governments to be formed in states. “It is because of this that when these people who talk of gathbandhan (alliance) and mahagathbandhan (grand-alliance), even their so-called allies are not ready to stand with them,” said Sharma. “For them the betterment of the family, their party and personal gains are more important than the betterment of the country,” he said.

No impact of Priyanka Gandhi on Lok Sabha polls, says BJP

Rahul Gandhi wishes Jaitley 'speedy recovery'

Congress president Rahul Gandhi Saturday asked the party unit in West Bengal to strengthen its organisation and prepare to fight "on its own" in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

He gave the mantra to the party unit at a meeting with PCC chief Somen Mitra and in-charge of Bengal, Gaurav Gogoi in New Delhi after discussing various organisational aspects pertaining the state unit.

"We have been asked to strengthen our party organisation in the state and prepare ourselves to fight on our strength in Bengal in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls," Mitra said in a statement after the meeting with the party chief.

West Bengal has a total of 42 Lok Sabha seats out of which Congress has four.

According to the West Bengal Congress president, Gandhi asked the party to start mass movements across the state against both BJP and TMC in order to protect the secular fabric of the state.

According to the state party sources, Mitra informed Gandhi about the "misrule" of the TMC and the "threat" of the BJP in the state.

The state Congress unit has also decided to hold a massive rally here in February next year.

"He (Rahul Gandhi) has also been informed about how the TMC is trying to undermine the achievement of Congress and Rahul Gandhi in the victory of the three Hindi heartland states," said a senior Congress leader.

The West Bengal Congress is of the opinion that the party's national president Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi should refrain from attending the proposed opposition rally to be held here by the TMC in January.

The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal has called a rally of opposition parties on January 19 at the Brigade Parade grounds in Kolkata. All opposition parties, including the Congress, have been invited to it.
