The Indian Armed Forces launched a series of high-precision strikes under Operation Sindoor on Wednesday (May 7), targeting nine terror camps and launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The action was a direct response to the recent deadly assault in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were brutally killed by terrorists.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the strikes were “focused, measured and non-escalatory.”

Rafale fighter jets: These two-seat fighters can fly long distances (about 1,850 km on a strike mission) and carry more than 9 tonnes of weapons. This “heavy lift” capability lets a Rafale carry multiple missiles and bombs. They are also equipped with advanced sensors and radar, allowing pilots to find and track targets with high precision even at night or in bad weather.

SCALP cruise missiles: SCALP (Storm Shadow) is an air-to-ground cruise missile. Weighing about 1,300 kg with its 450 kg warhead, it flies at subsonic speed on a programmed route. It can travel around 250 km to strike a target deep inside enemy territory. The missile uses GPS and terrain mapping to navigate. It also uses a high-resolution infrared camera for final accuracy.
HAMMER guided bombs: HAMMER (AASM) is a kit that attaches to a standard 250 kg bomb, adding a rocket booster, wings and guidance. This turns an unguided bomb into a smart bomb with a range of over 70 km. It can be guided by GPS or by an infrared/laser seeker for pinpoint accuracy.

India bolsters military might: India signs $7.4 billion deal to buy 26 Rafale fighter jets

India's military might just got a thunderous upgrade. India has inked a deal to buy 26 marine variants of Rafale fighter jets from France as tensions with Pakistan reach fever pitch after the Pahalgam attack. Watch in for more details!

How 26 new Rafales will give Indian military a lethal edge

India on Monday (April 28) officially signed a deal with France to purchase 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets, valued at around ₹64,000 crore ($7.41 billion), for the Indian Navy.
The agreement comes after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the government-to-government contract earlier this month. Deliveries of the new jets are expected to start in about three and a half years and should be completed within six and a half years.

Under the deal, India will receive 22 single-seat Rafale Marine jets designed for combat missions and four twin-seat trainers to help pilots prepare for operations at sea. Built by French aerospace company Dassault Aviation, these advanced fighters are set to be deployed on INS Vikrant, India's first indigenous aircraft carrier.
The new Rafale jets will work alongside the Navy’s current fleet of Russian-made MiG-29K fighters, which are based on both INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, an older aircraft carrier also of Russian origin. The MiG-29Ks, bought between 2004 and 2010, have faced reliability issues over the years, with only 15% to 47% of them reported as operational at times, according to a 2016 report.

A strategic upgrade for the Navy and Air Force

The addition of the Rafale Marine jets It will not just replace ageing aircraft but will significantly modernise India’s naval air power.
The agreement is also expected to benefit the Indian Air Force (IAF). The new jets will support the IAF’s “buddy-buddy” mid-air refuelling system, allowing up to 10 Rafale aircraft to refuel each other during missions, which will extend their operational range.
The IAF already flies 36 Rafale fighter jets, which were purchased under a ₹60,000 crore deal signed with France in 2016. The first Rafale jets for the IAF arrived in Ambala in 2020, marking a major leap in India’s air strength.

Why did India order exactly 26 jets?

The decision to buy exactly 26 Rafale Marine fighters is closely tied to the design of INS Vikrant. Launched in 2022, the carrier has the capacity to hold 26 aircraft.
The Navy’s order includes 22 single-seaters for combat missions and four twin-seaters for pilot training, making full use of the carrier’s available space.
Choosing 25 or 27 jets would have either left a spot empty or exceeded the ship’s carrying capacity. Though no official explanation has been given, it is clear that ordering 26 jets matches the operational needs of the carrier perfectly.

India, France ink ₹63,000 crore deal to buy 26 Rafale fighter jets: Why did New Delhi order 26 jets, and not 25 or 27?

India and France are set to sign a Rs 63,000 crore deal for 26 Rafale Marine combat aircraft on Monday in Delhi, defence officials said.
Officials from the Indian Defence Ministry and the French Ambassador to India will represent the two sides at the signing event. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh is likely to represent the Indian side, while the French and Indian defence ministers are expected to attend remotely, sources said.
Earlier, the French Defence Minister was scheduled to attend the signing in person but had to cancel his visit due to personal reasons.
The Cabinet Committee on Security had cleared the deal earlier this month.
The 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets are urgently required for deployment on Indian aircraft carriers, particularly INS Vikrant, which is now in service. The existing fleet of MiG-29K fighters has reportedly underperformed due to maintenance-related issues.
The Rafale M jets will be customised to meet Indian requirements and will be integrated into INS Vikrant. These carrier-borne fighters are being acquired as a stopgap solution until the development of an indigenous carrier-borne fighter jet is completed.

Sources said the signing event is likely to be held outside the Defence Ministry headquarters at South Block.
The French Minister is expected to arrive in India on Sunday evening and depart on Monday late evening, the sources added.
India had cleared its largest-ever defence deal for 26 Rafale Marine combat aircraft earlier this month on April 9 during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The government-to-government contract includes 22 single-seater and four twin-seater jets, along with a comprehensive package for fleet maintenance, logistical support, personnel training, and indigenous component manufacturing.
The Rafale M jets will operate from INS Vikrant and support the existing MiG-29K fleet. The Indian Air Force already operates a fleet of 36 Rafale aircraft acquired under a separate deal signed in 2016. These aircraft are based at Ambala and Hasimara.
The new deal will raise the total number of Rafale jets in India to 62, significantly boosting the country's fleet of 4.5-generation fighter aircraft.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Indian government had approved plans to buy 26 more Rafale jets and another three Scorpene-class submarines. But there was no mention of either of the deals in the joint statement issued last week post the bilateral talks.

Now, the Indian government sources have clarified to WION that the reason why it wasn’t mentioned in the joint statement is because “contracts aren’t put in vision statements”.

The sources on Tuesday (July 18) said that India and France would soon begin negotiations in many areas like price and date of delivery.

“India has made it clear that it wants Rafale fighter jets for the Navy and negotiations in this regard will take place to finalise it,” sources told WION.

The sources said that Rafale wasn’t included in the roadmap because it was for the next 25 years.

Since the Rafale contract would be completed long before 25 years, hence both countries felt that it didn't have to be mentioned in the statement, the sources said.

On the Scorpene deal, the sources said the agreement wasn’t finalised as key aspects of the deal still need to be discussed.

The Pakistani government has confirmed the purchase of at least 25 Chinese J-10C fighter jets for the Pakistan Air Force.

Sheikh Rashid, Pakistan's interior minister, told reporters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday that a squadron of 25 Chinese-made jets would do a flyover on March 23.

While rumours of Pakistan getting Chinese jets have been circulating for some time, there is still a large question mark over the Chinese jets' ability to compete with the modern French Rafale.

Although China has been utilising the J-10C multirole fighter aircraft to replace the People's Liberation Army Air Force's (PLAAF) brigades' considerably outdated J-7E fighters, it has relied on its much more sophisticated J-20 stealth jets to monitor the Taiwan Strait and the East China Sea.

Last year, the J-10C aircraft took part in a joint Pakistan-China exercise, where Pakistani experts got a detailed look at the fighter jets.

The joint drills began on December 7 and lasted roughly 20 days in Pakistan, with China sending J-10C and J-11B fighter jets, as well as KJ-500 early warning aircraft and Y-8 electronic warfare aircraft, and Pakistan sending JF-17 and Mirage III fighter jets.

The order, which follows the 2015 purchase of 24 Rafale jets, will be financed through a 10-year loan, the military said in a statement late Monday.

Investigative site Disclose had reported earlier Monday that the order was part of a secret mega-defence deal worth almost four billion euros ($4.8 billion).

Egypt is the world's third-biggest arms importer after Saudi Arabia and India, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Its arms purchases grew by 136 percent over the last decade and it has diversified its sourcing beyond the United States, buying military equipment from France, Germany and Russia, the institute said in a report released earlier this year.

The new Rafale deal "reinforces the strategic and military partnership between France and Egypt," French Defence Minister Florence Parly said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This contract illustrates the strategic nature of the partnership that France maintains with Egypt, while our two countries are resolutely committed to the fight against terrorism and are working for stability in their regional environment," the statement added.

Cairo has positioned itself as a bulwark of stability in the region as the conflict in its western neighbour Libya grinds on.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and French counterpart Emmanuel Macron enjoy a close relationship built on mutual security interests.

At a joint press conference with Sisi in Paris in December, Macron said: "I will not condition defence and economic cooperation matters on these disagreements (over human rights)."

The aircraft had started joining the Air Force fleet in the July-August timeframe last year and were quickly operationalised by the Air Force in the shortest possible time.

The aircraft had also been deployed for patrolling along the China front in eastern Ladakh and other fronts during the height of the China confrontation.

The planes equipped with the Hammer missiles have enhanced their capability to carry out air to ground strikes like the one in Balakot.

The Ambassador was in Kochi and boarded Tonnerre ship which will be making a port call.

Two French Navy ships, the Tonnerre and the Surcouf will make a port call in Kochi from March 30 to April 1. Following the port call, the two warships will sail to the Bay of Bengal to take part in the France-led joint naval exercise, La Perouse, which will bring together the navies from India, Australia, Japan, and the United States from April 5-7.

The Tonnerre, an amphibious assault helicopter carrier, is a versatile ship that can deploy assets for amphibious and air assault, conduct troop transport, as well as command a maritime task force and hospital ship. The Surcouf, a La Fayette-class frigate, is designed for high stealth and reduced acoustic signature, and can act as escort to capital ships like the Tonnerre.

The Tonnerre and the Surcouf, together, form the battlegroup Jeanne d'Arc which set sail from France in February 2021 for a five-month-long deployment in the Indo-Pacific region with the aim of providing training for the new cohort of 148 on-board French naval officer cadets, demonstrating France's capacity to deploy assets in strategic areas and strengthening interoperability with major partners in the Indo-Pacific, particularly India, France's foremost strategic partner in Asia.

After this joint exercise, the Tonnerre and the Surcouf will continue their deployment through the Indo-Pacific region, all the way to Japan, before sailing back to France to reach their home port on 14th July, France's National Day. During their voyage, the ships will sail through the South China Sea twice.

In the coming weeks, in addition to the La Perouse exercise, France and India will hold a large-scale Varuna bilateral exercise in the Western Arabian Sea which will involve the French aircraft carrier, battle group.
