One of the freed people who returned to India said: "It wouldn't have been possible for us to stand here without the intervention of PM Modi. And it also happened due to the continuous efforts of the Government of India."

Another added:&nbsp;"We waited almost for 18 months to be back in India. We are extremely grateful to the PM. It wouldn't have been possible without his personal intervention and his equation with Qatar. We are grateful to the Government of India from the bottom of our hearts for every effort that has been made and this day wouldn't have been possible without those efforts."

<h2>Why were the Indian nationals detained?</h2>

The Indian men were arrested by Qatari authorities in August 2022 and kept in detention without specifying the crimes committed by them. Months later, they faced charges filed on March 25, 2023, and underwent legal proceedings according to Qatari law.&nbsp;

In November, the eight Indian sailors who worked for Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services were handed a death penalty. At the time, New Delhi expressed shock over the verdict and vowed to explore all legal options to secure the release of its citizens.&nbsp;

In December, a Qatar court decided to reduce the death sentences handed to the eight Indian nationals who were convicted in connection with an alleged espionage case. The decision came after the acceptance of an appeal by the Indian government.&nbsp;

The then-MEA spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, had said in December last year that New Delhi was&nbsp;concentrating its efforts on repatriating the eight nationals.

He also stressed India’s commitment to addressing the issue, adding that the government was actively working to bring its citizens back home as soon as possible.

Notably, very few details about the case have been provided by the Indian and Qatari sides since the men were detained in August 2022.

In the latest development from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, Qatar on Thursday (Feb 1) revealed that the Palestinian militant group has given "initial positive confirmation" to a proposal for the cessation of fighting in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.

"The meeting in Paris succeeded in consolidating the proposals...," Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said of talks Qatari, US, Israeli and Egyptian officials had on Sunday.

"That proposal has been approved by the Israeli side and now we have an initial positive confirmation from the Hamas&nbsp;side."

Ansari stated that there were hopes of "good news" about a new pause in the fighting "in the next couple of weeks".

However, the Hamas group stated that there was no consensus yet on the proposed plan.

"There is no agreement on the framework of the agreement yet, the factions have important observations, and the Qatari statement is rushed and not true," the news agency AFP quoted a source close to Hamas as saying.

The Qatari foreign ministry spokesman said there was "still a very tough road in front of us".

"We are optimistic because both sides now agreed to the premise that would lead to a next pause," said Ansari.

"We're hopeful that in the next couple of weeks, we'll be able to share good news about that," he added.

On Sunday, mediators from the United States, Egypt and Qatar met with Israeli intelligence officials in Paris where they proposed a six-week pause in the Gaza war and a hostage-prisoner exchange for Hamas to review.

Qatar has played a pivotal role in the negotiations, having previously brokered a hostage release deal in November.&nbsp;

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The militants also seized around 250 hostages, with Israel reporting that about 132 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 28 deceased captives.

The ensuing Israeli military offensive, in response to the attacks, has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with at least 26,422 killed in Gaza, as per the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.&nbsp;

The negotiations in Paris signify a critical step towards a potential ceasefire and resolution of the ongoing conflict.

"This is a moment of profound tension in the region. This is a conflict that could easily metastasise, causing even more insecurity and even more suffering," Blinken told a news conference in Qatar during a regional tour aimed at de-escalating the conflict.

He further denounced the "tragedy" of civilian casualties and alerted that the upsurge in violence imperilled the wider region.

The top US diplomat said that Israel must make more efforts towards safeguarding civilians in Gaza, further adding that Palestinians displaced by the ongoing war must "return home".

"Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow. They cannot, they must not be pressed to leave Gaza," Blinken said on the latest leg of his fourth Middle East tour since the war broke out.

According to the health ministry and medics, Mustafa Thuria, a video stringer for AFP news agency, and Hamza Wael Dahdouh, a journalist with Al Jazeera television network, were killed while they were travelling in a car.

The Indian government on Thursday (Jan 4) expressed concerns over reports that some Indians residing in Canada were receiving "extortion calls".

"People getting extortion calls, especially Indian nationals, is a matter of serious concern," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said answering queries at the regular media briefing.

"We (India and Canada) have several issues to discuss. There was an issue about a temple which was attacked. The Canadian police then thereafter went into the investigation of the temple premises, and the person who had intruded it later turned out, and they issued a statement that the person was of unsound mind. So there are these issues that keep happening...," Jaiswal said.

As per local media reports, law enforcement officials in Canada have established a task force designated to investigate reports of extortion targeting some businesses run by the Indo-Canadian community.

The reports citing police in Canada said that at least nine incidents were being probed.&nbsp;

<h2>India 'closely monitoring' situation in Red Sea region, says Jaiswal</h2>

During the briefing, Jaiswal also touched upon the Red Sea issue stating that New Delhi was closely monitoring the 'unfolding situation' there with Indian Navy ships actively patrolling the region amid concerns around suspected drone attacks on merchant vessels in the region.

"In on what's happening, the situation in the Red Sea...we had made it very clear that we attach 
very high importance to freedom of navigation, free movement of commercial shipping," Jaiswal said.

"We are looking at the situation. It's an evolving situation, and we are looking at all aspects of it. As you know, we have Indian Navy ships patrolling the area. They're also keeping a watch on Indian ships there," he added.

He then clarified that India was not a part of any multilateral initiative or project in the Read Sea region, however, the government was closely monitoring the situation.

"So far, we are not part of any multilateral initiative or project in the area. But we are looking at the unfolding situation very closely," he added.

<h2>Have 60 days to appeal to highest Qatar court, says MEA&nbsp;</h2>

After a Qatari court commuted the death sentence of eight Indian nationals last week, India's External Affairs Ministry said that a 60-day window had opened to appeal the case in the highest court in Qatar.

The MEA spokesperson further said that the legal team of the MEA has obtained the court order and that the document is confidential.

"As far as the issue is concerned, there is a time of 60 days when this issue can be appealed in the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court in Qatar," Jaiswal stated emphasising on the temporal significance of the period.

"We issued a press release in which we informed you that the death sentence, which was originally a death penalty, has been changed to imprisonment sentences. Now our legal team has that court order, and I can confirm that all of them have received sentences of different durations, and the death penalty has been abolished," Jaiswal said.

He further added that the MEA was exploring the next steps with the family members of the eight Indian nationals and the legal team.
