Qatar receives ‘positive’ response from Hamas on hostage deal; militant group calls for ‘permanent ceasefire’

Qatar's prime minister said on Tuesday Hamas had reacted positively to the latest plan for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages.

Israel-Hamas war | US Secretary of state to discuss Hamas' response with Israel

In the latest development from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, Qatar on Thursday (Feb 1) revealed that the Palestinian militant group has given "initial positive confirmation" to a proposal for the cessation of fighting in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.

"The meeting in Paris succeeded in consolidating the proposals...," Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said of talks Qatari, US, Israeli and Egyptian officials had on Sunday.

"That proposal has been approved by the Israeli side and now we have an initial positive confirmation from the Hamas&nbsp;side."

Ansari stated that there were hopes of "good news" about a new pause in the fighting "in the next couple of weeks".

However, the Hamas group stated that there was no consensus yet on the proposed plan.

"There is no agreement on the framework of the agreement yet, the factions have important observations, and the Qatari statement is rushed and not true," the news agency AFP quoted a source close to Hamas as saying.

The Qatari foreign ministry spokesman said there was "still a very tough road in front of us".

"We are optimistic because both sides now agreed to the premise that would lead to a next pause," said Ansari.

"We're hopeful that in the next couple of weeks, we'll be able to share good news about that," he added.

On Sunday, mediators from the United States, Egypt and Qatar met with Israeli intelligence officials in Paris where they proposed a six-week pause in the Gaza war and a hostage-prisoner exchange for Hamas to review.

Qatar has played a pivotal role in the negotiations, having previously brokered a hostage release deal in November.&nbsp;

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The militants also seized around 250 hostages, with Israel reporting that about 132 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 28 deceased captives.

The ensuing Israeli military offensive, in response to the attacks, has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with at least 26,422 killed in Gaza, as per the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.&nbsp;

The negotiations in Paris signify a critical step towards a potential ceasefire and resolution of the ongoing conflict.

Hamas gives 'initial positive confirmation' on truce plan, says Qatar

Qatar said it was “appalled” by leaked remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in which he criticized the country’s mediation efforts with Hamas, complicating already arduous negotiations meant to halt the hostilities in exchange for a hostage release.

Qatar lashes out at Netanyahu over critical remarks

Qatar: Netanyahu's reported criticism undermines Gaza mediation

Qatar on Wednesday said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was obstructing mediation efforts in the Gaza war after a leaked recording allegedly captured him calling the Gulf state "problematic".

"We are appalled by the alleged remarks attributed to the Israeli Prime Minister in various media reports about Qatar's mediation role," Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, said on social media platform X.

"If the reported remarks are found to be true, the Israeli PM would only be obstructing and undermining the mediation process, for reasons that appear to serve his political career instead of prioritizing saving innocent lives, including Israeli hostages," he wrote.

In a leaked recording from a meeting with hostage families that aired on Israel's Channel 12 news on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Qatar "problematic."

"You haven't seen me thank Qatar, have you noticed? I haven't thanked Qatar. Why? Because Qatar, to me, is no different in essence from the U.N., from the Red Cross and in a way it's even more problematic. However, I'm willing to use any mediator now who can help me bring them (the hostages) home."

Asked to comment on Qatar's statement and whether the leaked recording was authentic, an Israeli government spokesperson said Israel "cannot go into details regarding the efforts and steps taken to release the hostages."

In response Al Ansari's statement, Israel's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, accused Doha of "supporting and funding terrorism."

Smotrich said on X that Qatar was "largely responsible" for the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on southern Israeli communities and called on Western countries to apply more pressure on it to bring an immediate release of the hostages.

In November, Qatar helped secure a seven-day pause in fighting, during which 110 Israeli and foreign hostages were released from Gaza in return for 240 Palestinians released from Israeli captivity.

In the recording, Netanyahu went on to say that Qatar has leverage over Hamas because it funds the movement. He told the hostage families that he recently "got very angry with the Americans" for renewing a deal to extend U.S. military presence at a base in Qatar.

The Qatari spokesman said in his statement: "Instead of concerning himself with Qatar's strategic relations with the United States, we hope Netanyahu decides to operate in good faith and concentrate on the release of the hostages."

"You haven't seen me thank Qatar, have you noticed? I haven't thanked Qatar. Why? Because Qatar, to me, is no different in essence from the U.N., from the Red Cross and in a way it's even more problematic. However, I'm willing to use any mediator now who can help me bring them (the hostages) home." Asked to comment on Qatar's statement and whether the leaked recording was authentic, an Israeli government spokesperson said Israel "cannot go into details regarding the efforts and steps taken to release the hostages." In response Al Ansari's statement, Israel's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, accused Doha of "supporting and funding terrorism." Israel, Qatar ink pact to allow medicine delivery to Hamas-held hostages

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a warning on Sunday (Jan 7) that the war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip may "metastasise" and endanger regional stability.

"This is a moment of profound tension in the region. This is a conflict that could easily metastasise, causing even more insecurity and even more suffering," Blinken told a news conference in Qatar during a regional tour aimed at de-escalating the conflict.

He further denounced the "tragedy" of civilian casualties and alerted that the upsurge in violence imperilled the wider region.

The top US diplomat said that Israel must make more efforts towards safeguarding civilians in Gaza, further adding that Palestinians displaced by the ongoing war must "return home".

"Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow. They cannot, they must not be pressed to leave Gaza," Blinken said on the latest leg of his fourth Middle East tour since the war broke out.

<h2>Death of journalists in Gaza 'unimaginable tragedy'</h2>

During the press briefing, Blinken said that the death of two journalists in a strike in Gaza was an "unimaginable tragedy".

"This is an unimaginable tragedy. And that's also been the case for... far too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children," he said.

The health ministry in the Gaza Strip said on Sunday (Jan 7) that two journalists were killed in an Israeli air strike in the war-torn region.

According to the health ministry and medics, Mustafa Thuria, a video stringer for AFP news agency, and Hamza Wael Dahdouh, a journalist with Al Jazeera television network, were killed while they were travelling in a car.
&nbsp;&nbsp;
Hamza's father Wael al-Dahdouh is Al Jazeera's bureau chief in the Gaza Strip and was also recently wounded in a strike, AFP reported. He was wounded after his wife and two children were killed by a separate Israeli strike in the initial weeks of the war which started on Oct 7 last year. Thuria, meanwhile, joined AFP in 2019.

In a statement, Hamas' media office condemned the killings. "We condemn this heinous crime committed by the Israeli occupation army in a bid to intimidate and prevent media coverage," it said.
