Severe turbulence on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha, bound for Ireland, injured 12 people aboard on Sunday (May 26), said Dublin Airport.

The wounded included six cabin crew and six passengers. However, the airport authorities said the plane landed safely as per how it was scheduled.

Flight QR017, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, landed shortly before 1 pm Dublin time (1200 GMT), said the airport.

"Upon landing, the aircraft was met by emergency services, including airport police and our fire and rescue department, due to six passengers and six crew [12 total] on board reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey," Dublin Airport said in a statement.

"The Dublin Airport team continues to provide full assistance on the ground to passengers and airline staff," it added.

The incident, as per the passengers onboard the flight, lasted for less than 20 seconds and occurred when the drinks and food were served, reported Irish broadcaster RTE.

Following the episode, Qatar Airways released a statement saying that a "small number" of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries and that they were receiving medical attention.

It further said that an internal probe would be initiated into the matter.

Singapore flight turbulence

The incident occurred just a few days after a Singapore Airlines flight, that took off from London, was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok due to severe turbulence.

This claimed the life of a 73-year-old British man and wounded 100 others, with a few of them still receiving medical treatment.

The head of a Bangkok hospital said that some of the passengers aboard the flight suffered skull, brain and spinal injuries.

It was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew from London to Singapore.

"The number of patients in ICU remains the same," Adinun Kittiratanapaibool, Director of Bangkok's Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital told reporters, referring to the medical facility's intensive care unit.

He further added that the "meaning of those in ICU are those that need close attention". He mentioned that currently there were no life-threatening cases.

Kittiratanapaibool said that his staff were treating six people for skull and brain injuries, 22 for spinal injuries, and 13 for bone, muscle and other injuries.

"We have never treated people with these kinds of injuries caused by turbulence," he told reporters, further adding that the injuries at the hospital range from two to 83 in age.

Biden appealed to the leaders "to exert all efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas as this is now the only obstacle to an immediate ceasefire and relief for the people of Gaza," stated the White House. Egypt's presidency stated that al-Sisi also discussed the dangers of a military escalation in Rafah with President Biden. The call focused on the plan of exchanging Israeli hostages with Palestinian prisoners. "President al-Sisi stressed the necessity of full and adequate access to humanitarian aid, reviewing the intensive Egyptian efforts in this regard," said the Egyptian presidency, in a statement. According to officials and local media, Israel's war cabinet decided on Saturday to send negotiators to Qatar to carry on negotiations toward achieving a ceasefire in the conflict with Hamas and the release of hostages detained in Gaza.

Israel-hamas war: Israeli negotiators sent to Qatar for more Hamas hostage talks

Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group said that it estimates of losing about 6,000 of its fighters, according to news agency Reuters.

A Hamas official based in Qatar told Reuters that despite this, the group can continue fighting and is prepared for a protracted conflict in both Rafah and Gaza.

"Netanyahu's options are difficult and ours are too. He can occupy Gaza but Hamas is still standing and fighting. He hasn't achieved his goals to kill the Hamas leadership or annihilate Hamas," he added.

The figure stated by Hamas is about half as reported by the Israeli army, which states 12,000 fighters from Gaza's ruling group have already been killed in the conflict.

The claims by the militant group are a rare acknowledgement of enduring significant losses in the Gaza fighting.

Return hostages by Ramadan or face Rafah ground offensive, Israel warns

Meanwhile, Israel's war cabinet issued a warning on Sunday (Feb 18) stating that the Israeli military would launch its ground offensive in the Gaza Strip's Rafah by March 10 if hostages held by Hamas in the besieged Palestinian territory are not freed within the next few weeks.

According to a report by The Times of Israel, war cabinet member Benny Gantz said, "The world must know, and Hamas leaders must know, if by Ramadan our hostages are not home, the fighting will continue everywhere, including the Rafah area."

Gantz further said that Israel would carry out the offensive in a coordinated manner, facilitating the evacuation of civilians in dialogue with the United States and Egypt to minimise civilian casualties.

Palestinians hope international community can pressure Israel against entering Rafah

Palestinians in the Rafah tent camps on Sunday voiced concerns about the nearing Israeli offensive.

“We hope that the international community pressures (Israel) not to enter Rafah, because the number of people that are in Rafah, is big. Even if you want to displace them, how will you do it for such a number? 1.3 million or 1.4 million people need to be displaced. Where will they go?” Hassan Al-Yakobi, retired teacher from Gaza City, told the news agency Reuters.

"We have young children and our stuff, these are the things every displaced anywhere is suffering. Other than this, what can we say? We are suffering. We walked from Khan Younis to Kaf Miraj (area between Khan Younis and Rafah) while holding our things, it’s all very tiring,” he added.

According to a report by The Times of Israel, war cabinet member Benny Gantz said, "The world must know, and Hamas leaders must know, if by Ramadan our hostages are not home, the fighting will continue everywhere, including the Rafah area." Gantz further said that Israel would carry out the offensive in a coordinated manner, facilitating the evacuation of civilians in dialogue with the United States and Egypt to minimise civilian casualties. Palestinians hope international community can pressure Israel against entering Rafah Palestinians in the Rafah tent camps on Sunday voiced concerns about the nearing Israeli offensive. At the Munich Security Conference, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said efforts for a ceasefire had been complicated by the insistence of "a lot of countries" that any new truce involve further releases of hostages. "The pattern in the last few days is not really very promising," Prime Minister Al-Thani added. His remarks came as Hamas threatened to suspend its involvement in talks unless relief supplies were brought into the north of Gaza. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a senior source from Hamas said, "Negotiations cannot be held while hunger is ravaging the Palestinian people." UN likely to vote on ceasefire soon In other latest news from the war, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is likely to vote on Tuesday on an Algerian push for the 15-member body to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict. Algeria put forward an initial draft resolution more than two weeks ago. However, the US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield quickly said the text could jeopardize "sensitive negotiations" aimed at brokering a pause in the war. To be adopted, the UNSC resolution needs at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the US, the United Kingdom (UK), France, China, or Russia.
