Additionally, everyone will undergo a mandatory 14 day period of quarantine, which is true for everyone entering the country. Taiwan is a democracy, unlike the neighbouring China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.

Taiwan has been lauded as one of the earliest success stories of containing COVID-19. In fact, the country never underwent a lockdown, which is not true for the rest of the world, where containing the virus has been very hard.

The death of another Black man by a police officer in the United States, Rayshard Brooks, in Atlanta has triggered a fresh wave of protests in the country against police brutality and racism.

Brooks was shot at by an officer, who succumbed to gun shot wounds in the back.

The Fulton country medical examiner’s office has ruled it as homicide, while protests continue to rage for the fourth straight week in the country.

Brooks, 27, died from blood loss and organ injuries caused by the gunshot wounds, the autopsy revealed.

The statement from the medical examiner’s office referred to the manner of death as “homicide”.

The Democratic National Committee's council on climate change irked party leadership when it published policy recommendations this month that ventured beyond presidential candidate Joe Biden's plan, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The party tension shows the tricky nature of climate politics as Biden seeks to court young and more progressive voters without turning off voters in energy-producing swing states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, where a boom in shale gas drilling had created blue-collar jobs.

Members of the DNC Environment and Climate Crisis Council,&nbsp;formed last year, published proposals for the party's four-year platform on June 4 in a press release, calling for up to $16 trillion in spending to shift the U.S. economy away from fossil fuels while banning hydraulic fracturing and oil and gas exports.

The council's proposals far exceed Biden's current climate plan, which bans new oil and gas permits on public lands and dedicates $1.7 trillion to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, but allows continued fracking and exports in the meantime.

Biden's campaign is updating its climate plan as it prepares for the Nov. 3 election contest against Republican President Donald Trump, a fervent advocate of fossil fuel drilling and mining who has downplayed climate change risks and unwound hundreds of environmental regulations.&nbsp;

Biden is being advised by a panel led by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has called for a vast government-run effort to move away from fossil fuels, and John Kerry, who helped negotiate the Paris climate agreement as President Barack Obama's Secretary of State.

One senior Democrat familiar with the DNC's workings said climate council members overstepped by putting out recommendations ahead of the convention that are unlikely to be adopted in the party's platform, which will be drafted by a DNC committee by its August convention.

"It's a nonstarter," said the Democrat, who requested anonymity to discuss the matter. "Nobody takes them seriously. Joe Biden will be writing the platform for our national convention."

Two people close to the DNC said the council blindsided the party by publicly releasing the 14-page document.

"They acted like insurgents within the party trying to stake out a left flank before the convention," one of the sources said.

DNC and Biden campaign officials declined to comment.

The DNC agreed to create the council last year after angering environmental activists and progressives for declining to hold a standalone climate debate among competitors for the party's presidential nomination.

Council Chair Michelle Deatrick said the council has been in touch with both Biden's climate advisory panel and the campaign but published the recommendations ahead of the convention to help galvanize support for an aggressive plan.

"We are advocating to ensure these recommendations are adopted in the Democratic Party platform. We have strong support, and are building a coalition of environmental groups, Democratic Party groups and more," she said.

Deatrick was a campaign surrogate of Biden rival Bernie Sanders, who had released a $16 trillion climate plan last year before dropping his bid for the party nomination. Other council members include representatives and activists from conservation and environmental justice groups.

Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mineworkers Union, said the recommendations would have "political consequences."

"I can assure you that the mere issuing of this report has already cost Democrats potential votes in places like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan," he said.

Just on Friday, another Black man Rayshard Brooks was shot by the police in Atlanta, which spurred protests across the country again.

One of the most-widely used dictionaries, Merriam-Webster is set to change the definition of “racism” after a young black woman suggested the word should reflect the oppressive realities faced by many people of colour.

A graduate from Drake University in Iowa, Kennedy Mitchum contacted the dictionary makers to improve its definition of racism.

"I basically told them that they need to include that there's a systematic oppression upon a group of people," she told a local news outlet. "It's not just, 'Oh, I don't like someone.'"

Racism is defined as "a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles," and "a political or social system founded on racism” in the current edition.

In the video that went viral after Floyd’s death, the officer was seen kneeling on the man for almost nine minutes, even when he was repeatedly telling the officer about his inability to breathe. It was only when the ambulance arrived that the officer retracted his knee from the neck. An hour later, Floyd was dead.

Bail raised to $1.25 million for officer charged with murdering George Floyd

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam warned on Tuesday the city could not afford further "chaos" as it marked the first anniversary of the start of rolling mass pro-democracy protests.

A man who recently drove his car through a score of protesters in the US state of Virginia is a “leader of the Ku Klux Klan”.

Henrico Country Commonwealth’s Attorney recently told CNN that the man, Harry Rogers, is “an admitted leader of the KKK” and that he is also a “propagandist for Confederate ideology”.

The 36-year-old has been officially charged with attempt to wounding, vandalism, and assault and battery. According to media reports, he is being held without a bond. The man appeared in court on Monday, and will next appear on August 18.

The police were seen tossing tear gas and flash grenades at the protesters who set off fireworks.

New York City remained relatively calm after a night of intensive looting, which hit even luxury stores in the city. After this, over 200 arrests were made by the police, which they claimed were for violating the curfew.

Situation relatively calm after protesters defy curfew for eighth consecutive day in US

China hit out at Britain’s plans to change immigration laws for Hong Kongers seeking relief amid the ongoing protests against China’s imposition of security laws in the formerly British territory.

The laws introduce provisions of sedition and essentially make criticism of the Chinese Communist Party a crime in the city which enjoys democratic freedoms not available to people in mainland China.

UK&nbsp;joins the US in condemning the Chinese plans for Hong Kong, with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also showing interest in extending citizenship to the people of Hong Kong if they aren’t “comfortable” in the city.

Against the backdrop, a handful of global firms are eyeing a move of some of their corporate treasury operations to countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, four senior bankers with knowledge of the matter said.&nbsp;

"Companies' treasury operations follow trade flow and now there are many questions around Hong Kong's status as a trade hub," said a Hong Kong-based banker with a leading global trade finance bank.

Trade flows could be hit if the end of Hong Kong's special relationship with the United States sees the city's goods subject to the same - higher - rates paid by companies in mainland China, which has been fighting a trade war with the United States. Hong Kong's zero tariff rates on U.S. imports could also be at risk.&nbsp;

"Some (multinational corporations) are considering shifting a part of their treasury operations (out of Hong Kong) to start with and then gradually scale it up," the banker said.

A leading U.S. retail chain, which operates hundreds of stores around Asia, is already in early talks with its banks to move some cash management related operations to Singapore from Hong Kong, the banker said.

The bankers, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, help companies set up the treasury centres and manage them. They are in talks with the companies about their likely relocation plans but said there was no strict timeline.

If it happens, the development would deal another blow to Hong Kong's status as a major financial hub, following widespread pro-democracy protests last year.

Already there are signs rich Chinese are seeking to park fewer funds in Hong Kong.

But the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the city's de-facto central bank, told Reuters via e-mail that interests from corporates in setting up treasury operations in Hong Kong remained strong.

"There is no noticeable sign of fund outflow from either the Hong Kong dollar or banking system," it said.

Singapore Edge

The end of the preferential treatment could hurt Hong Kong's hard-fought progress in competing with Singapore for treasury operations centres - which manage risk, borrowing, lending and raise capital for companies - in Asia.

At around 8:08 pm, two police officers arrive at the scene, and Floyd is seen sitting with two others in a parked car. One officer, Thomas Lane, aims his gun at at Floyd and then restrains him. To this, Floyd resists while being handcuffed.

The officer then attempts to force Floyd into a squad car. At 8.14 PM, Floyd falls to the ground and pleads to the officers. After this, officer Derek Chauvin arrives with others&nbsp;and further attempts to put him in the police car.

8:19 PM

At 8:19 pm Chauvin is seen pulling Floyd out of the passenger side, after which he falls to the ground, face down,&nbsp; and still in handcuffs. At this point, witnesses starts filming the incident.
