Iran President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday (October 16) accused US President Joe Biden of 'inciting chaos' in Iran. Raisi's statement came after Biden expressed support for nationwide protests in Iran that erupted after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

"The remarks of the American president, who is inciting chaos, terror and the destruction of another country, serve as a reminder of the eternal words of the founder of the Islamic republic, who called America the Great Satan," Raisi said, referring to the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenei.

"The enemy's plot must be countered by effective measures to resolve people's problems," Raisi added, according to a presidency statement.

"It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don't think will be quieted for a long, long time," said the US president.

Iran experienced its largest demonstrations in years after Mahsa Amini passed away in the hospital on September 16, three days after her arrest.

Human rights organisations claim that in standoffs with the security forces that have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, young women and girls have stubbornly taken off their Islamic headscarves, or hijabs.

A timeline of the events is provided below:

13 September - Arrest

Amini is imprisoned by the Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrols), the police division that enforces stringent dress codes for women, including the requirement to wear a headscarf, while she is on a family vacation in Tehran.

According to her brother Kiaresh, while he was waiting for her outside the police station, an ambulance passed by and rushed her to the hospital.

Another officer comes up behind the woman and places his left hand on her bottom as she is being dragged toward one of the bikes.

Later, as more officers encircle her, the woman stoops to the ground. Behind the camera, a female voice can be heard stating, "They're ripping her hair."

As a form of protest in scenarios similar to those that have occurred in recent days across the nation, drivers in cars close to the action begin honking.&nbsp;

The woman is then seen getting up and fleeing the area while it appears she is not wearing a hijab, or headscarf.

"Look at him [the security force officer], he is laughing," the same voice from earlier in the footage is heard saying at this point.

The incident is being looked into, according to the police public relations office in Tehran, said state news agency Irna.

The police statement does not give details of what happened, but says that "enemies using psychological warfare tried to cause public anxiety and incite violence".

Kwok described the alleged inciting as a severe crime, but instead of sending the defendants to prison because of their "age and immaturity," he sentenced them to a training centre or juvenile detention facility.&nbsp;

The three-year maximum stay is left up to the discretion of the penitentiary authorities.

Only one of the five was given bail, and four of the five had already been kept in detention for more than a year.&nbsp;

The police had raided an industrial building, where they had found flags, flyers, air rifles, ammo, and extendable batons, according to the prosecution.&nbsp;

At least 22 individuals connected to the organisation were detained in 2017. According to the security law, many people are facing different charges of planning to conduct terrorism.

After widespread anti-government and pro-democracy rallies in 2019, Beijing and Hong Kong officials claim the security law has brought calm back to the world's financial centre.&nbsp;

However, human rights experts on the UN Human Rights Committee advocated for the law's repeal in a report released in July due to worries that it is being exploited to restrict basic freedoms.
