Harry asked to return to the UK to bid grandfather Prince Philip a final goodbye: Reports

Britain`s Prince Philip, the 99-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth, underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition on Wednesday, Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Thursday.

Philip was admitted to hospital on Feb. 16 after he felt unwell, to receive treatment for an unspecified, but not COVID-19-related, infection.

On Monday, he was transferred to a different hospital in central London, with the palace saying at the time that he would have heart tests and continue to be treated for the infection.

"The Duke of Edinburgh yesterday underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at St Bartholomew’s Hospital," the palace said, using Philip`s formal title.

"His Royal Highness will remain in hospital for treatment, rest and recuperation for a number of days," the statement said.

Since being admitted to hospital on Feb. 16, the duke has been publicly visited only by his son and heir Prince Charles.

The queen, 94, has remained at Windsor Castle west of London, where the couple have been staying during the coronavirus pandemic, and last week continued to carry out her official duties by video.

She and Philip have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose.

Greek-born Philip, who turns 100 in June, has required hospital treatment several times in the last decade for a recurrence of a bladder infection.

At Christmas in 2011 he had an operation to clear a blocked artery in his heart after being rushed to hospital with chest pains.

Britain's Prince Philip has successful heart procedure, palace says

Queen Elizabeth II's 99-year-old husband Prince Philip on Monday left the private London hospital where he had spent nearly two weeks to have heart tests and treatment at another hospital, Buckingham Palace said.

Royal officials said the Duke of Edinburgh, as he is formally known, was taken from King Edward VII's hospital to the state-run St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London.

Doctors there "will continue to treat him for an infection, as well as undertake testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition", they added.

"The Duke remains comfortable and is responding to treatment but is expected to remain in hospital until at least the end of the week."

Philip was admitted to King Edward VII's hospital on February 16 as a "precautionary measure" and on the advice of his doctor, after feeling unwell.

But the palace was quick to point out that his admission was not related to Covid-19, and later said he was being treated for an undisclosed infection.

He and the queen, 94, both had the first dose of a Covid vaccination on January 9 because of their age, which puts them in one of the most vulnerable categories.

An ambulance was seen leaving the King Edward VII's hospital late morning on Monday, driving off past banks of photographers and camera crews.

But a police van -- and tinted windows in the ambulance -- blocked sight of who was inside the vehicle, which left from a rear entrance.

Umbrellas were also held up to conceal the gap between the ambulance and the hospital doors.

He thanked members of the public for sending messages of support.

Last Monday, Philip's grandson, Prince William, said the duke was "OK" and being closely monitored by medical staff.

Two days earlier, William's father and Philip's eldest son, heir-to-throne Prince Charles, visited him in hospital but made no comment afterwards.

Philip was able to walk into the hospital unaided when he first was first admitted and arrived using private transport, rather than an ambulance, a source said at the time.

Queen Elizabeth receives COVID-19 vaccine

Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip marks his 99th birthday on Wednesday, with the royal couple still in lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The monarch, 94, and her husband of 72 years are maintaining social distancing rules at Windsor Castle, west of London, as their age puts them in a high-risk category for COVID-19.

Buckingham Palace released a new photograph of the couple, which was taken on June 1 in the quadrangle at the castle, to mark his birthday.

Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth, leaves hospital

Queen Elizabeth II's 97-year-old husband Prince Philip on Saturday surrendered his driving licence after causing a car crash that outraged the media and stirred a debate about old age and driving.

Buckingham Palace said Philip -- formally known as the Duke of Edinburgh -- took the decision on his own <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/uks-prince-philip-97-escapes-unhurt-from-car-crash-191090">after rolling over his Land Rover last month</a>.

"After careful consideration the Duke of Edinburgh has taken the decision to voluntarily surrender his driving licence," Buckingham Palace said in a brief statement.

Police in the eastern part of England where the accident happened outside a royal residence said they had passed Philip's file to prosecutors to determine whether anyone should be charged.

"Norfolk Police can confirm that the 97-year-old driver of the Land Rover involved in the collision at Sandringham ... voluntarily surrendered his licence to officers," said a police statement.

"The investigation file for the collision has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for their consideration."

A CPS spokesman said the service "will take this development into account" as it studies Philip's case.

Few royal watchers seriously expect the duke to be punished by the police.

'Strong-willed'
A witness told British media that Philip had emerged unharmed but "shocked and shaken" from the collision with the much smaller Kia hatchback.

Police said a nine-month-old baby in the back seat of Kia was uninjured. One woman in the vehicle broke her wrist and the other cut her knee.

The duke was forced to follow standard police procedure and take a breath test.

Police said the results "provided negative readings" for both drivers.

Philip came under days of media criticism for failing to quickly and publicly apologise for causing the crash.

The same witness said Philip had told police he was "blinded by the sun" when he turned onto the road without seeing the oncoming car.

Two days after that accident, the duke was photographed driving a replacement Range Rover without a seatbelt, which is illegal in Britain.

James Brookes, of the Royal Central news site, said Philip was a "strong-willed" individual who was probably not swayed by the public backlash when deciding to hang up his key.

"He wants to enjoy his retirement but he was very shaken by the crash," Brookes told the BBC.

But Brookes conceded that Philip would have "obviously" been aware of the bad press.

Philip's behaviour also raised questions about why he was still driving instead of being chauffeured around by his entourage.

"There will be some surprise that the duke still drives himself on public roads," BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond wrote last month.

Dymond also called Philip a "fiercely independent" person who "would have resisted any suggestion that he be denied the right to drive himself".

Philip retired from public life in 2017 and underwent a hip replacement operation last April.

He is famous in Britain for his forthright manner and his love of speed.

The royal family website says the duke learned to fly all types of aircraft after passing a Royal Air Force test in 1953.

Queen Elizabeth II's 97-year-old husband Prince Philip on Saturday surrendered his driving licence after causing a car crash that outraged the media and stirred a debate about old age and driving. Buckingham Palace said Philip -- formally known as the Duke of Edinburgh -- took the decision on his own after rolling over his Land Rover last month. "The investigation file for the collision has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for their consideration." Britain's Prince Philip, 97, gives up licence after car crash

Britain's Prince Philip has said he is "deeply sorry" about the injury suffered by a woman in a car crash he was involved in over a week ago, according to a report in the Sunday Mirror.

The newspaper published a copy of a letter written by the 97-year-old royal to Emma Fairweather, who broke her wrist when the Kia she was in collided with the prince's Land Rover.

"I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident... I can only imagine that I failed to see the car coming, and I am very contrite about the consequences," said the letter, signed by Philip in blue pen.

The crash, which left the prince's vehicle on its side, happened as he pulled out of a side road onto a busy main road near the royal country residence in Norfolk, eastern England.

Philip was uninjured in the January 17 accident, while the driver of the Kia sustained cuts to the knee.

Fairweather, a passenger in the Kia, had complained to the Sunday Mirror last weekend that she had not received an apology from the prince.

"I was somewhat shaken after the accident, but I was greatly relieved that none of you were seriously injured," said Philip in the letter dated January 21, according to this Sunday's report.

"I have since learned that you suffered a broken arm. I am deeply sorry about this injury."

Philip, known for his forthright manner and off-colour jokes, retired from public life in 2017 and underwent a hip replacement operation last April.

The accident stirred up what The Sun described as Britain's "age-old debate" about whether and when the elderly should give up driving.

Images published the weekend following the crash appeared to show the prince behind the wheel of a replacement Land Rover Freelander on his wife Queen Elizabeth II's private Sandringham estate.

Britain's Prince Philip back to driving after car crash — without seatbelt

Queen Elizabeth's 97-year-old husband <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/the-man-who-would-be-king-eventually-prince-charles-turns-70-175799">Prince</a> Philip escaped uninjured from a car crash while driving on Thursday near the Sandringham estate in eastern England.

Police said two people in a car that collided with that of the prince, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, were both taken to hospital for minor injuries but later discharged.

Pictures from the scene showed a Land Rover overturned on the side of the road. The accident occurred when Philip was pulling out of a driveway onto the main road, the BBC reported, quoting a witness saying he was very shaken.

Philip drove former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to lunch during their state visit to Britain in 2016.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Thursday's accident.

"The Duke was not injured," it added in a statement.

A palace spokeswoman later confirmed Philip was at the wheel and was checked by a doctor afterwards. He did not go to hospital and was now back at Sandringham, the private country residence owned by Queen Elizabeth in the county of Norfolk.

Famous for verbal gaffes but generally regarded with wry affection by Britons, Philip married Elizabeth in 1947 and has been by his wife's side throughout her long reign.

Since retiring from official solo duties in 2017, he has appeared in public alongside the Queen and other members of the royal family at events and church services.

He had successful hip replacement surgery last year.

The former naval officer did not accompany the Queen to a church service on Christmas Day last month though a royal source said he was in good health.

Kate Williams, a royal historian, said it would be a blow to Philip if the incident ended his driving days. "He really loves driving and takes great pleasure in it and were he not allowed to drive he would find that quite painful," she said.

There is no legal age in Britain to stop driving, but after 70 people must renew their licence every three years.

Outspoken yet intensely private, Philip developed a reputation for brusque comments and often headline-grabbing remarks during ceremonial events.

A stray comment about "slitty eyes" during a visit to China in the 1980s became symbolic of his gruff and often unguarded manner. Even into his 90s, his off-the-cuff comments could still get him into trouble, such as when he exasperatedly swore at a photographer during an event in 2015.

A nine-month-old baby who was in the back seat of the Kia hatchback involved was uninjured, while one of the two women inside hurt her wrist, local police said.

"We are aware of the public interest, in this case, however, as with any other investigation it would be inappropriate to speculate on the causes of the collision until an investigation is carried out," the police said in a statement.

Images published by UK media showed a dark Land Rover standing on its side by the curb, driver's side down, its windscreen smashed, glass and metal debris scattered across a road running by a leafy park.

"I was driving home and I saw a car, a black (Land) Rover come out from a side road and it rolled," witness Roy Warne told BBC Radio on Friday.

"There was a huge collision with another car. I went to the other car and there was a baby in the back" in a harness.

Warne said one of the two other women in the Kia "was the mother of the child and she was quite upset".

Philip and the other driver were given breath tests, which is standard police procedure. No alcohol was detected.

The accident created banner headlines in most British papers, which cover the royals' every move, and a robust media debate about the wisdom of driving at Philip's age.

"MY LEGS! MY LEGS!" The Sun tabloid splashed on its front page — reportedly the phrase Prince Philip "yelled" as he was pulled from the wreckage.

It quoted him as saying: "I was blinded by the sun."

Love for speed

Philip, known for his forthright manner and off-colour jokes, retired from public life in 2017 and underwent a hip replacement operation last April.

Tall, slim and built like a retired soldier, the former air force pilot spends most of his time driving, gardening and enjoying family life at royal estates, according to Buckingham Palace.

He was last seen in public with the queen at Princess Eugenie's wedding in October.

But he missed the royal family's annual Christmas Day church service gathering.

Known as the Duke of Edinburgh in Britain, Philip is also famous for his love for speed.

The royal family website says the duke "learned to fly all type of aircraft", passing a Royal Air Force test in 1953.

In 2016, alongside the queen, he drove former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle around Windsor Castle after they landed nearby in the presidential helicopter.

'Age-old debate'

The accident stirred up what The Sun described as Britain's "age-old debate" about whether and when the elderly should give up driving.

The issue is especially sensitive in the case of the royals, with the Daily Mail noting: "There's only one person who can tell him to stop driving. But will she dare?"

The queen was reportedly at the duke's side when he checked in for a brief hospital visit, but has issued no public comment.

Official figures cited by UK media show more than 100,000 drivers in the UK over the age of 90.

In Britain, licenses expire when a person turns 70 and are renewed through a simple self-assessment test.

"There will be some surprise that the duke still drives himself on public roads," BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond wrote in a commentary.

"But he has always been fiercely independent, and would have resisted any suggestion that he be denied the right to drive himself."

The Daily Mail asked whether the duke would now "sacrifice one of his last indulgences".

The BBC's Dymond suggested that he might.

"It might be that the duke is about to be persuaded to give up the wheel."

It quoted him as saying: "I was blinded by the sun." Love for speed Philip, known for his forthright manner and off-colour jokes, retired from public life in 2017 and underwent a hip replacement operation last April. 'Age-old debate' The accident stirred up what The Sun described as Britain's "age-old debate" about whether and when the elderly should give up driving. The issue is especially sensitive in the case of the royals, with the Daily Mail noting: "There's only one person who can tell him to stop driving. But will she dare?" The queen was reportedly at the duke's side when he checked in for a brief hospital visit, but has issued no public comment. "But he has always been fiercely independent, and would have resisted any suggestion that he be denied the right to drive himself." The Daily Mail asked whether the duke would now "sacrifice one of his last indulgences". The BBC's Dymond suggested that he might. "It might be that the duke is about to be persuaded to give up the wheel."

UK's Prince Philip 'shocked and shaken' after car crash

In an interesting development on the front of The Crown <a href="http://cmsuat.wionews.com/world/entertainment-claire-foy-from-the-crown-was-paid-less-than-her-prince-revealed-makers-of-the-show-35743">gender pay gap controversy,</a> lead actress Claire Foy who played the role of Queen Elizabeth in the first two seasons, the current monarch to the British throne -- will now receive back pay for her performance after show producers admitted she was paid less than co-star Matt Smith, who portrayed Prince Philip.

According to a report published in a leading UK-based daily, Claire would get about $274,000 (£200,000) in back pay. Both the producers on the show, Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries, brought up the topic of wage gap during a conference in Jerusalem earlier this year. The duo claimed that Matt earned more money because of his stint on the BBC series Doctor Who.

When this was revealed, Claire who went on to win a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role on the show commented: “I’m surprised because I’m at the centre of it, and anything that I’m at the centre of like that is very, very odd, and feels very, very out of ordinary. “But I’m not [surprised about the interest in the story] in the sense that it was a female-led drama. I’m not surprised that people saw the story and went, ‘Oh that’s a bit odd’. But I know that Matt feels the same that I do, that it’s odd to find yourself at the centre [of a story] that you didn’t particularly ask for.”

Meanwhile, Matt told a website that he totally believed in him and Claire being paid equally. He said, “Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly and there should be equality for all. I support her completely, and I’m pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because of that what’s needed to happen.”

He added, “ Going forward, I think we should all bear in mind that we need to strive to make this better and a more even playing field for everyone involved – but not just in our industry, in all industries.”

The Crown’s production company, Left Bank Pictures has now confirmed that it will pay Olivia Colman, who will take over the role of The Queen in the third season of the show, the same wage as the show’s new Prince Philip, <a href="http://cmsuat.wionews.com/world/entertainment-actor-tobias-menzies-roped-in-to-play-prince-philip-in-netflixs-the-crown--126995">Tobias Menzies</a>.

The company also issued a statement of apology to both Matt and Claire. It read: “We want to apologise to both Claire Foy and to Matt Smith, brilliant actors and friends, who have found themselves at the centre of a media storm this week through no fault of their own.”

It was earlier revealed that the lead actress who plays the role of Queen Elizabeth, around whom the story revolves around was paid lesser than her on-screen husband who plays the role of Prince Philip.

Actor Tobias Menzies roped in to play Prince Philip in Netflix's 'The Crown'

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth&#39;s&nbsp;face is on our money and she has a place in our heart. Today&#39;s&nbsp;Canada originated as a British colony, but the Queen doesn&rsquo;t do very much for Ottawa&nbsp;today. Her function can be reduced to this.

Years ago I worked in a downtown Toronto music store that sometimes sold music, but mostly peddled trite action figures of rock stars like Kurt Cobain and also of Queen Elizabeth II. Kurt&rsquo;s plastic arms could be manipulated to play a plastic guitar, while the Queen waved her hand. The royal wave was automated, a mini solar panel ensuring she kept waving. It very well could still be waving this second. The twee Cobain toy was an insult to the angsty grunge rocker, but the Queen&rsquo;s didn&#39;t just&nbsp;capture&nbsp;the essence of a royal&rsquo;s entire function, it&nbsp;also performed it.

Yet it&rsquo;s not true that a life-sized version of this toy&nbsp;could replace Queen Elizabeth in the flesh. I&rsquo;ve never met Queen Elizabeth, but she seems so lovely! For six decades has carried herself and represented Britain with dignity, tact, and even surprising humour in performing what could otherwise easily be a stiff ceremonial role.&nbsp;

Is this enough to merit Canada keeping an ongoing symbolic connection to Britain&rsquo;s Royal family, then?

Nope.

We take for granted that our link&nbsp;to the&nbsp;royals is&nbsp;great because Elizabeth is, and has been seemingly forever. But imagine if overseeing it all was a royal like&nbsp;Philip, a&nbsp;royal doofus. (He retired from royal engagements&nbsp;in May, 2017.)&nbsp;The Queen excels in her job, which is to be presentable in public in exchange for unlimited money. Philip seemed&nbsp;intent on reminding the public of&nbsp;what little merit he has.

The internet has chronological listicles of Philip&rsquo;s best catastrophes, things said seemingly to undo Queen Elizabeth&rsquo;s reputation.

First, a topical example. While on a tour of Canada in 1976: &ldquo; We don&rsquo;t come here for our health. We can think of other ways of enjoying ourselves.&rdquo; This is a stupid, needless thing to say for a Royal visiting any country, let alone a former colony. But this is for him highly inoffensive.

Think of the Queen&rsquo;s dignity, then consider Philip&rsquo;s 1965 doozy while seeing an exhibition of &ldquo;primitive&rdquo; Ethiopian art: &ldquo;It looks like the kind of thing my daughter would bring back from her school lessons.&rdquo;

Two years later, &ldquo;British women can&rsquo;t cook&rdquo;.&nbsp; To be fair, from what I understand of British cuisine of the era this&nbsp;was true of its&nbsp;men too.

Immune to maturing,&nbsp;a 65-year-old in 1986&nbsp;told a World Wildlife Fund meeting &ldquo;if it has got four legs and is not a chair, if it has got two wings and flies but is not an aeroplane and if it swims and is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it.&rdquo; Prince Philip has spent his career, his life, trying unsuccessfully to get fired from being unemployed.

Can any Canadian imagine this man on our money? Commanding the respect of not just one person, but Canada? We&rsquo;ve been spoiled by Elizabeth. Today, it&rsquo;s all too clear that society&rsquo;s highest public offices and institutions are not automatically treated with dignity because they should be.

As Canada moves forward, rather than look back at British history it should look forward at improving life for its own&nbsp;Indigenous people. It&rsquo;s not impossible to do both, but the fact that British royals who live overseas are officially venerated while Canada&rsquo;s Indigenous communities are unofficially marginalised is revealing and telling. Colonialism is at the root of this.

With respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, there&rsquo;s no reason to symbolically worship&nbsp;another Brit for being&nbsp;simply born onto a throne when Canada has already produced Neil Young.

Happy 150th birthday, Canada!

Canada turns 150: Should Canada keep its symbolic connection to Britain?s royal family?

Days after her husband Prince Philip announced his retirement, Britain&#39;s Queen Elizabeth was spotted behind the wheel of her Jaguar car on her way back from Sunday morning service at the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor Park.

Her favourite car though is her Range Rover, in which she often takes her family for drives.

The Queen is likely to be spotted more often than the 95-year-old Prince Phillip who announced he will retire from public engagements later this year. Experts say she considers the vow unbreakable.

Sneak Peek: 91-year-old Queen Elizabeth II drives herself back from church

Britain&#39;s Prince&nbsp;Philip, the 95-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will retire from public engagements later this year, Buckingham Palace said Thursday.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who turns 96 on June 10, is the longest-serving consort in British history, and is still in good health.

But he has been reducing his workload in recent years, and said in 2011 that &quot;I reckon I&#39;ve done my bit, so I want to enjoy myself a bit now&quot;.

Philip&nbsp;conducted 219 royal engagements last year, and was in good form when he opened a new stand at Lord&#39;s cricket ground in London on Wednesday.

&quot;You&#39;re about to see the world&#39;s most experienced plaque-unveiler,&quot; he quipped just before pulling the cord to part a small curtain.

The former naval officer&#39;s no-nonsense approach combined with his infamous and often politically incorrect off-the-cuff remarks has not made it easy for people to warm to his style.

But his unwavering, forthright style and devotion to duty and the queen has endeared him to the nation.

Prime Minister Theresa May offered him the whole country&#39;s &quot;deepest gratitude and good wishes&quot;.

&quot; His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn of this year,&quot; the palace said in a statement.

&quot;In taking this decision, the duke has the full support of the queen.&quot;

It said he would attend previously scheduled engagements until August, and would not accept any new invitations thereafter.

However, &quot;he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time&quot;, it said.

No fuss, no nonsense&nbsp;

Philip&nbsp;has been ever-present at his wife&#39;s side since she took the throne in 1952.&nbsp;

They married in 1947 and will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on November 20.

It is likely that the monarch will be accompanied by younger members of the royal family on future engagements.

Prince William, second in line to the throne, has already announced that he is leaving his job as an air ambulance pilot this year in order to undertake more royal duties.

The announcement followed a meeting of royal staff from around Britain -- a rare gathering which prompted global speculation about the health of the monarch and her husband.

&quot; Her Majesty will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements with the support of members of the royal family,&quot; the palace stressed.

Like her husband, Queen Elizabeth has gradually cut back her workload in recent years as they go into their nineties.

But she made a sacred vow before God and her people at her 1953 coronation to serve for life, which experts say she considers unbreakable.

She also witnessed how the monarchy was placed in peril by her uncle king Edward VIII&#39;s abdication in 1936.

&#39;Inspirational&#39;&nbsp;

Philip&nbsp;is patron, president or a member of more than 780 organisations, and while he will maintain his association with them, he will &quot;no longer play an active role by attending engagements&quot;, it said.

The duke carried out royal duties on 110 days last year -- more than his grandchildren Princes William and Harry.

His 219 engagements last year were made up of 101 official visits, 91 receptions and 21 other engagements.

They were all carried out in Britain as Queen Elizabeth and the duke have cut down their overseas travel.&nbsp;

They made state visits to Germany and Malta in 2015 but have not left Europe since their visit to Australia in 2011.

In her statement, May paid tribute to&nbsp;Philip&#39;s contribution to public life.

&quot; From his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen to his inspirational Duke of Edinburgh Awards and his patronage of hundreds of charities and good causes, his contribution to our United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the wider world will be of huge benefit to us all for years to come,&quot; she said.
