<p>Actor Noah Schnapp, who is best known for his role as Will Byers in <em>Stranger Things</em>, took to Instagram over the weekend to share photos from his first Pride Month celebration since coming out as gay in January 2023.</p>

<p>Simply captioning the post, "First pride," he shared the happy and emotional moment with his 26.5 million followers.</p>

<p>As can be seen in the now-viral pictures, he donned white trousers with a shirt that said, "Straight outta the closet". He is also wearing rainbow headbands and hand bands, which is a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and social movements.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While many praised the actor for proudly celebrating his first Pride month, a few trolls left homophobic comments on the post. But Noah's fans came forward to support him and respond to the nasty remarks from his side.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On January 5, Noah announced to the world that he is gay via a TikTok video. In the video, he said, "When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was 'we know'." <p>About 150 unionised Starbucks stores in the United States will be going on strike on Friday as workers express their dissatisfaction with the coffee chain's policy regarding Pride decorations in stores. The union representing organised stores, Starbucks Workers United, alleges that Starbucks has restricted Pride Month decorations in certain locations, citing a "hypocritical treatment of LGBTQIA+ workers".&nbsp;Starbucks has vehemently denied these claims, as per media reports.</p>

<p>Starbucks Workers United announced on Twitter that around 3,500 employees will be participating in the strike over the next week. The union is calling attention to what they perceive as inconsistencies in Starbucks' responses based on internal documents and testimonies from store managers.</p>

<h2><strong>Starbucks' response</strong></h2>

<p>Starbucks clarified that store leaders have the autonomy to decorate their stores for Pride and other heritage months as long as the decorations adhere to safety guidelines. The company claims to be unaware of any company-owned stores banning Pride decorations and pointed out that many locations have showcased their Pride decorations on social media.</p>

<p>A Starbucks spokesperson emphasised the company's unwavering support for the LGBTQIA+ community and denied any changes to the policy.</p>

<p>“We unwaveringly support the LGBTQIA2+ community. There has been no change to any policy on this matter and we continue to encourage our store leaders to celebrate with their communities including for US Pride month in June,” the Starbucks spokesperson said and added, “We’re deeply concerned by false information that is being spread.”</p>

<h2><strong>Union's counterargument</strong></h2>

<p>The union countered Starbucks' response on Twitter, pointing to an article reporting Pride decor bans in approximately 100 locations across parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri, which are more conservative regions. The union alleges that Starbucks is succumbing to pressure by removing Pride decorations.</p>

About 150 unionised Starbucks stores in the United States will be going on strike on Friday as workers express their dissatisfaction with the coffee chain's policy regarding Pride decorations in stores. The union representing organised stores, Starbucks Workers United, alleges that Starbucks has restricted Pride Month decorations in certain locations, citing a "hypocritical treatment of LGBTQIA+ workers". Starbucks has vehemently denied these claims, as per media reports. Starbucks Workers United announced on Twitter that around 3,500 employees will be participating in the strike over the next week. The union is calling attention to what they perceive as inconsistencies in Starbucks' responses based on internal documents and testimonies from store managers. Starbucks' response Starbucks clarified that store leaders have the autonomy to decorate their stores for Pride and other heritage months as long as the decorations adhere to safety guidelines. Though this show has a host of gay characters, all of which are endearing in their own ways, including Tucker’s husband Michael Pritchett, the former still qualifies as the gay ‘best’ friend that every woman aspires to have.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Going by the stereotype would mean he's chatty, gossipy and has a huge affinity towards fashion, style, luxury, and the good life and also is hugely popular, especially with women. Not every gay buddy has to be like this though; you can still like them for other qualities, but you can’t ignore their dripping, cascading charm. Gay men are very very charming, know how to compliment a woman and say just the right things. Is it any wonder then that they make a woman's best buddy?<br />
<br />
If you ask me why, I could roll off a number of reasons why I think so and also why I feel that the straight woman-gay man friendship is a match made in Heaven. In fact a bit more than even the ‘bromosexual’ friendships that are the talk of the town now. Uh, what’s that?<br />
<br />
Bromosexual would mean a straight man and gay man friendship that’s decidedly rarer than gay men’s friendships with women. Only because most straight guys are reluctant to befriend gay ones because of some amount of homophobia (admit it, it exists!) and then being seen as less masculine if found in the company of such men. And yet, bromosexual friendships are slowly gaining a foothold in society, if you are to believe societal trends as reported in most media.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Women on the other hand are drawn to gay men like bees to honey and the reason is clear. They gravitate towards them because they get the benefits of hanging around with somebody who is clearly not a competition and also because this liaison has none of the dangers that heterosexual friendships have.&nbsp;<br />

Like &nbsp;a famous character Harry Burns, in a very famous romcom, <em>When Harry Met Sally </em>says, “Men and women can’t be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.” His view may not be entirely accurate but has a lot of truth in it if you care to find out. After all friend zoning doesn’t come easy, with just about anybody.<br />

Personally, some of my favourite gay best friends are: Rupert Everett who’s the gay right-hand to Julia Roberts in <em>My Best Friend’s Wedding</em>. He’s devoted to her, loves her and gets to show that being single is fun. My vote also goes to Paul Rudd in <em>The Object of My Affection,</em> the&nbsp;ideal partner that Jennifer Aniston wants but cannot have!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then again, in the famous 1998 show <em>Will &amp; Grace</em> that ran for a successful 11 seasons before wrapping up in 2006, is it any surprise then that the lead characters Will Truman (Eric Mccormack), a gay lawyer and his best friend Grace Adler (Debra Messing), an interior designer became iconic characters soon after? Their relationship with all its fun moments and sensitivity and pathos carved the way for more gay characters and best friendships with women to flourish in real life.<br />

Well, the gay best friend endures. You’ll still find him lurking here and there and latching on to a woman that loves him with all her heart and vice versa.<br />

Now, coming back to the real world, what on earth can explain why gay men and women make best friends? According to a report in Science Direct, the reason why not just any woman, but most attractive women want gay male friends is because it is a previously undiscovered strategy to prevent mating deception and sexual exploitation. Ahem, yes. There is painstaking research that actually says that women's tendency to befriend gay men is because firstly they do not have the motive to mate with women or to compete with them for straight male partners. The second reason is that attractive women are more likely to be sexually and competitively targeted by heterosexual individuals.<br />
<br />
So straight women and gay men can have an astonishing rapport and become close quickly; just the kind of things that they may not always have with straight men. These above reasons are also advocated in a study by Eric M Russell, professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, Department of Psychology.<br />

Like so many others before me, I too had my share of gay best friends. I’ll call my first gay best friend Simon (he still doesn’t want to be written about), like the 2018 movie about the cute gay guy called <em>Love Simon</em>. The first time we met in college was almost like the first time of a romantic encounter. Our eyes met, we talked, hit it off immediately and became best friends soon after. Except this was not a romance; rather a straight woman-gay man friendship that has nurtured my life for the last 15 years.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
He no longer lives in India but we still keep in touch. He says it's been tough growing up with a different sexual orientation in a country where it is still a matter of shame for most parents to admit their child is gay, where he was mocked a lot and could never marry the man he loved.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
In these years, I've been through my fair share of troubles; so has he. Instead of reaching out to other friends, I always leaned on him. His life hasn't been so easy because though he had been through many relationships, when he finally found the one he wanted to marry, there was a lot of opposition so he moved to foreign shores with his partner and they created their ‘happily ever after.'<br />
<br />
A classic love story with all the trials and tribulations and finally victory.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Throughout the years, I've had the fortune of knowing many such Simons, all of whom (at least I feel that) are unique in the way they lead their lives, choosing their battles, their rights and holding their head up to make their unique choices and being fearless about it. They do not bow to convention and do not subscribe to notions of ‘normal’ that most people are bound to, in a narrow sense.<br />

What is normal, really? It differs from person to person.<br />

<h2><strong>About the White House Pride Month event</strong></h2>

<p>The White House, in a statement, on Thursday said, “Today’s Pride event on the White House South Lawn will be postponed until Saturday based on the projected air quality in the region.” The event at&nbsp;the White House is expected to witness thousands of guests from across the country, including LGBTQ+ families and features&nbsp;Betty Who and Baltimore DJ Queen HD.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Biden administration has said previously also that it is a deliberate move by the president, a Democrat, to contrast the Republicans and others who have targeted LGBTQ+ people. “This year we’re seeing a disturbing surge in violent threats against LGBTQ community organizations,” said domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In too many parts of our country, LGBTQ Americans are being targeted for who they are, and that, simply put, is discrimination,” she was quoted as saying by Reuters.<br />

Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly gay White House press secretary,&nbsp;also spoke about how Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as well as their spouses are strong supporters of the LGBTQ+ community.</p>

<p>Jean-Pierre&nbsp;said that people need to know that the US president has “their back” and “will continue to fight for them. And that’s the message that we want to make sure that gets out there.”</p>

<p>Notably, Biden’s own views about the LGBTQ+ community have evolved over the years in public life but his support as then-vice president in 2012 for same-sex marriage is seen as a turning point which was followed by then-President Barack Obama who publicly showed his support for gay marriage a few days later.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What are Biden’s proposals for LGBTQ+ community?</strong></h2>

<p>In late 2022, Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law which would federally recognise same-sex marriage amid concerns that the Supreme Court could reverse its legal support of such relationships.&nbsp;</p>

Additionally, the upcoming proposals seem to largely counter the number of bills proposed and signed into law by Republican-led states which target transgender youth, ban books, and even stop teachers from discussing gender or sexuality with younger children. Recently, conservative lawmakers in several US states have also proposed or passed laws restricting drag performances.</p>

<p>The Biden administration is expected to announce a new coordinator in the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights which would help navigate the rise in book bans across the country. White House has previously said, such bans erode democracy and have an impact on LGBTQ kids as the books banned are about them, which could contribute to more&nbsp;stigma and lead to isolation.</p>

Meanwhile, Health and Human Services departments are expected to issue a new advisory for mental health care providers supporting transgender kids.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>LGBTQ+ state of emergency in the US</strong></h2>

<p>The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the largest advocacy organisation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals&nbsp;in the US, on Tuesday declared its first national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ individuals. The group cited hundreds of legislation in statehouses across the country which are aimed at regulating the lives of queer people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, the organisation also released a guidebook which outlined laws it deems discriminatory in various states. The organisation said that it acted in response to an “unprecedented and dangerous” rise in anti-LGBTQ bills which were signed into law.</p>

<p>According to the HRC, more than 70 bills which they consider anti-LGBTQ were passed in statehouses this legislative session which is nearly double from last year. The organisation also said that at least 525 bills were introduced out of which 220 affect transgender people. “This is a full-out crisis for our communities that demands a concerted response,” the campaign’s president, Kelley Robinson told The Associated Press.&nbsp;</p>
