Trump challenged Biden to a debate, expressing openness to various formats, including one in a courthouse. Despite skipping GOP candidate debates earlier, he's keen on debating Biden before the 2024 election.

"Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters," Trump posted on&nbsp;Truth Social.

"I suggest Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, or Wednesday Evening at my Rally in Michigan, a State that he is in the process of destroying with his E.V. Mandate," he further wrote.

During an interview with radio host Howard Stern on Friday, Biden stated that he is willing to debate Trump.

"I am, somewhere, I don’t know when, but I am happy to debate him,” Biden said in the interview.&nbsp;

If the proposed dates are not feasible, Trump suggested holding the debate at the New York courthouse where he is facing trial for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal hush-money payments to a former Playboy Playmate and an adult film actress before the 2016 election.

"In the alternative, he’s in New York City today, although probably doesn’t know it, and so am I, stuck in one of the many Court cases that he instigated as ELECTION INTERFERENCE AGAINST A POLITICAL OPPONENT - A CONTINUING WITCH HUNT! It’s the only way he thinks he can win," Trump wrote.

"In fact, let’s do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight - on National Television, I’ll wait around!", he added.

Trump previously stated he's willing to campaign from the courthouse, seeing it as feasible.

He's using his New York trial to raise campaign funds, occasionally giving short speeches at news conferences. Trump will spend four days a week in court for several weeks.

US: Donald Trump offers to debate Joe Biden from courthouse

A former prosecutor noted that Special Counsel Jack Smith's main argument in his Supreme Court submission is that Donald Trump should stand trial for election fraud, regardless of any presidential immunity. Smith's brief said that the prosecution should proceed, even if a former president has some immunity from federal criminal prosecution.

"This may be the most critical piece: Smith tells the Court: 'even if you think there might need to be some immunity for a president, it's not this case. Let this one go to trial',"&nbsp;Vance wrote on X, formerly&nbsp;Twitter.

In his argument, Smith wrote that "even assuming that a former President is entitled to some immunity for official acts, that immunity should not be held to bar this prosecution."

"First, a President's alleged criminal scheme to overturn an election and thwart the peaceful transfer of power to his lawfully elected successor is the paradigmatic example of conduct that should not be immunised, even if other conduct should be," Smith wrote.

"Second, at the core of the charged conspiracies is a private scheme with private actors to achieve a private end: petitioner's effort to remain in power by fraud."

"Those allegations of private misconduct are more than sufficient to support the indictment," he added.&nbsp;

Smith heads the federal prosecution against the ex-president, accused of unlawfully trying to overturn his defeat to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Newsweek reached out for comment from Trump's lawyer. Last year, Smith charged Trump with various offences related to the January 6 riots at the US&nbsp;Capitol and an alleged scheme involving false elector slates.

<h2>What is Trump's take?</h2>

Trump, widely expected to be the Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential race, asserts his innocence and pleads not guilty to all accusations. He accuses prosecutors of politically motivated targeting.

The case is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court on April 25, as Trump seeks to have the indictment thrown out, arguing that he is protected from criminal charges for actions taken during his time in the White House.

Lower courts, initially rejected Trump's assertions of presidential immunity—first by US&nbsp;District Judge Tanya Chutkan in December, followed by the US&nbsp;Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in February. In a comprehensive survey conducted by political scientists Justin Vaughn and Brandon Rottinghaus, 154 scholars, predominantly affiliated with the American Political Science Association, were tasked with evaluating the greatness of all US presidents, from George Washington to Joe Biden. This survey aimed to provide a thorough ranking of presidential greatness, a task previously undertaken by Vaughn and Rottinghaus in 2015 and 2018.

Respondents were asked to assign a rating to each president on a scale of 0 to 100, representing their overall greatness. A score of 0 indicated failure, 50 represented an average rating, and 100 signified greatness. The average score for each president was then calculated, resulting in a comprehensive ranking from highest to lowest.

The top positions in the ranking remained relatively stable compared to previous surveys. Abraham Lincoln retained the first position for his remarkable leadership during the Civil War and his pivotal role in abolishing slavery. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and George Washington,&nbsp;recognised for their significant contributions during times of national crisis, closely followed.

<h2>Impact of racial justice movements</h2>

A noteworthy aspect of the survey was the observed shifts in rankings for presidents associated with racial injustice. Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson, previously ranked higher, experienced downward trends due to reevaluations of their treatment of marginalised groups.

Barack Obama, the first Black president in US history, saw a notable rise in his ranking, ascending nine places to seventh. This elevation reflects his historic presidency in consecutive terms.

Ulysses S Grant witnessed an improvement in his ranking, attributed to his efforts in protecting the rights of freed slaves despite facing corruption allegations during his presidency.

<h2>Comparison with Trump</h2>

In stark contrast, Donald Trump ranked at the bottom of the list, even behind presidents who failed to prevent or heal the Civil War. His tumultuous tenure, marked by a contentious post-election period and numerous legal challenges, contributed to his low standing in the survey.

Two of Indonesia's three presidential contenders pledged to protect press freedom in the world's third-largest democracy at a weekend event that frontrunner Prabowo Subianto didn't attend.

The event was held just days ahead of the February 14 poll, at a time when some Indonesians raise concerns over erosion of the country's hard-won democratic freedoms. Criticism over political interference has been levelled especially at outgoing President Joko Widodo, who has given tacit support to Prabowo.

In the past, incumbents wrapping up their second term as president have remained neutral.

On the last day of campaigning, ex-Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and ex-Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo signed the National Press Council's written declarations to uphold democracy and press freedom.

It was unclear if Prabowo, represented at the Saturday (Feb 10) event by the head of his campaign team, signed the declaration. His campaign did not respond to queries on the matter.

As the spectre&nbsp;of a potential return of former president Donald Trump to the White House looms, countries worldwide are delicately recalibrating their diplomatic strategies. The repercussions of Trump's unexpected 2016 victory left an indelible mark on international relations, prompting a proactive approach from global leaders to navigate the uncertainties that a Trump 2.0 presidency might bring.

<h2>Estonia's strategic outreach: Balancing diplomacy</h2>

Estonia's Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, has exemplified&nbsp;the global trend of strategic engagement. During her November visit to Washington, Kallas not only engaged with White House officials but also sought conversations with key allies of Donald Trump, reported Bloomberg.

The outreach extends beyond the political hub of Washington, as demonstrated by Estonia's foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, expressing gratitude to Lockheed Martin Corp. workers in Arkansas, acknowledging their role in Estonia's security. Such initiatives aim to preemptively address concerns and garner support from diverse segments of American society.

<h2>Global fears and hopes</h2>

World leaders, scarred by the unpredictable outcomes of the 2016 election, are treading carefully, expressing both fears and hopes about the potential impact of a Trump resurgence.

European allies, once taken aback by Trump's America First rhetoric and threats to NATO, are cautious in their discussions. Some European Union leaders are avoiding&nbsp;openly acknowledging the prospect of Trump's return, fearing that mere mention could influence the political landscape.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has publicly labelled it a "threat," stressing the need to learn from the lessons of Trump's first term.

<h2>Asia's mixed sentiments</h2>

In Asia, the dynamics are mixed.

India, having enjoyed a personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump, leans towards a preference for the previous administration.

Modi's government, in particular, favoured Trump's approach over Biden's, especially concerning human rights. However, the concern is not uniform, and nations in the Global South are discerning potential opportunities in Trump's transactional approach.

<h2>China's economic perspective</h2>

China, a focal point of Trump's trade policies, assesses the economic implications of a potential return.

The continuation of tariffs imposed during Trump's presidency could modestly benefit China. However, broader global repercussions, particularly on the United States, Canada, and Mexico, are acknowledged. The delicate balance between economic interests and geopolitical tensions characterises China's approach.

<h2>Global South's perspective</h2>

Nations in the Global South see opportunities amid the uncertainty. Brazil, assuming the G-20 presidency, fears potential disruptions to its climate action and poverty reduction plans with a resurgent Trump.

On the other hand, some nations in the Gulf region anticipate alignment with Trump's transactional approach, viewing it as a pragmatic fit for their policies.

<h2>Russia's cautious optimism</h2>

Russia, initially optimistic about Trump's election in 2016, is approaching&nbsp;the potential return with caution.

While there is an anticipation of better relations with a re-elected Trump, disappointment over unmet expectations during his first term tempers expectations.

The Kremlin's cautious optimism underscores the complexity of managing relationships with a volatile global actor.

The European Union, scarred by tit-for-tat sanctions with the Trump administration, aims to "Trump-proof" agreements. Senior EU diplomats, mindful of dependencies in energy and raw materials, recognise the need to address vulnerabilities.

Defence strategies, energy partnerships, and raw material dependencies are critical considerations as Europe prepares for potential shifts in global dynamics.

Europe, particularly concerned about potential impacts on Russian relations, the Ukraine conflict, and the future of NATO, is actively engaging with Trump's representatives.

Defence and security discussions are paramount, with European nations taking precautionary measures and reaching out to influential voices close to the former president. Personal ties are seen as crucial in balancing national interests with diplomatic strategies.

Explained | How Trump’s potential White House return impacts India and global dynamics

Lai Ching-te, the presidential candidate representing Taiwan's ruling party, secured victory in an election that China had characterised as a pivotal choice between 'war and peace'. The main opposition candidate, Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang (KMT), conceded defeat, marking a critical moment for Taiwan's political landscape.

Lai, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which advocates Taiwan's distinct identity and rejects China's territorial claims, sought an unprecedented third term under Taiwan's current electoral system. The DPP's stance emphasises the island's sovereignty and has been a source of contention with China.

<h2>Opponents and election dynamics</h2>

Facing two opponents in the presidential race, Lai contended with Hou from the KMT and Ko Wen-je, former Taipei Mayor representing the Taiwan People's Party, founded in 2019.

The election unfolded against the backdrop of China denouncing Lai as a 'separatist', rejecting calls for talks. Lai, in contrast, has emphasised his commitment to maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait while bolstering the island's defences.

Ahead of the election, China consistently labelled Lai as a dangerous separatist. Taiwan's defence ministry reported the spotting of Chinese balloons crossing the sensitive Taiwan Strait on the election day, further escalating tensions. The ministry classified the balloon activities as psychological warfare and a threat to aviation safety.

Hou, representing the KMT, advocated restarting engagement with China, beginning with people-to-people exchanges. Lai accused Hou of being pro-Beijing, an assertion that Hou rejected. Ko, known for addressing everyday issues such as housing costs, garnered passionate support, particularly among young voters. While he aimed to re-engage with China, Ko underscored the importance of protecting Taiwan's democracy and way of life.

Parallel to the presidential race, the parliamentary elections hold equal importance. The outcome will be crucial, especially if no party secures a majority, potentially hindering the new president's legislative and spending initiatives, particularly in defence.&nbsp;

Biden cannot 'physically' make it through another term: Trump mocks US president's age, cognitive function

In a political upset, Javier Milei, a far-right libertarian outsider, has clinched victory in Argentina's presidential run-off poll, as per provisional results. His unexpected triumph comes at a critical juncture for Argentina, grappling with economic crises and rising inflation, reflecting a yearning for change among the electorate.

Milei's campaign was marked by unconventional tactics, including wielding a chainsaw on the trail. His economic proposals, notably the bold idea of "detonating" the central bank and endorsing the US dollar as the official currency, struck a chord with voters disillusioned with traditional politics and desperate for a transformative approach.

<h2>Concession from Sergio Massa</h2>

Facing a surprising defeat, Sergio Massa, the incumbent economy minister, gracefully conceded the race. With nearly 90 per cent&nbsp;of votes counted, provisional results revealed Milei securing almost 56 per cent&nbsp;of the vote, leaving Massa with 44 per cent. Massa acknowledged Milei's victory, stating that the responsibility of providing certainty now lies with the president-elect.

Global leaders, including Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Chile's President Gabriel Boric, shared their reactions, signalling the impact of Argentina's political shift on the region.

While Milei's win resonated with a significant portion of the electorate frustrated with economic hardships, critics remain sceptical of his untested leadership and unconventional policy proposals.

The comparison with populist leaders like Trump and Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro raises concerns about the potential consequences of unorthodox governance.

Leaders across South America expressed mixed reactions to Milei's victory. While Brazil's President offered support, Colombia's President Gustavo Petro expressed sadness, criticising neoliberalism's purported inability to address current societal challenges. Chile's President Gabriel Boric saluted both Milei and Massa, extending goodwill to the Argentine people.

Milei's decisive win signifies a shift in Argentina's political landscape, propelled by a desire for change in the face of economic difficulties.&nbsp;

Argentina far-right outsider Javier Milei wins presidential run-off. This is his 'drastic' policy change plan

Six prominent presidential candidates in&nbsp;Madagascar&nbsp;told AFP on Monday they plan to boycott this week's elections, worsening a political crisis engulfing the country.

The six, who are part of a larger grouping of opposition candidates holding almost daily protests for weeks, said they will not take part in Thursday's vote and will urge their supporters not to cast their ballot.&nbsp;

"We will call (on people) not to go and vote," said presidential hopeful Marc Ravalomanana, 73, one of two former presidents to join calls for a boycott.&nbsp;

The Indian Ocean island nation has been shaken by a fierce battle between President Andry Rajoelina, who is running for re-election, and most opposition leaders.

Almost all the 12 opposition candidates in the running have led near daily, unauthorised marches in Antananarivo, for more than a month, protesting at what they have called an "institutional coup" that favours the incumbent.

The demonstrations that have in average drawn a few hundred supporters have been regularly dispersed by police.&nbsp;

On Saturday, security forces fired teargas and detained 11 protesters at yet another rally.&nbsp;

"I will not stand for election, that is very clear," said Hery Rajaonarimampianina, 65, another former president who was in the running to replace Rajoelina.&nbsp;

Last week, the head of the lower house of parliament, who leads a mediation group to find a way out of the crisis, called for the suspension of the presidential elections, to ensure "peace" and "harmony".

"The situation is deleterious. There is no calm, it is not the time to hold elections," said candidate Auguste Paraina, 69. The opposition grouping supports a suspension of the electoral process. &nbsp;

But a spokeswoman for Rajoelina called the request a "far-fetched idea".

The outgoing president held his last campaign rally in Antananarivo on Sunday in front of a fervent crowd of several thousand people donning t-shirts bearing his image.

"I'm going to win, that's for sure, and in the first round," he told AFP in an interview at the weekend.

'Rigged vote'&nbsp;

Rajoelina, 49, became Africa's youngest head of state in 2009 when he took power on the back of a coup.&nbsp;

After not running in the 2013 election due to international pressure, he was voted back into power in 2018 and has since held the reins in a country that remains among the poorest in the world despite vast natural resources.

The show of support for the president at the weekend "means nothing" said Roland Ratsiraka, 57, another opposition candidate, hinting at the common practice of paying people to attend political rallies in the country.&nbsp;

The European Union, the United States and other members of the international community have expressed "deep concern" at the political tensions and denounced the excessive use of force against the opposition.

A source at&nbsp;Madagascar's electoral commission said some irregularities have already been reported, including some would-be voters being pressured not to register.&nbsp;

The crisis erupted in September after Rajoelina resigned in line with the constitution in order to run for re-election.

The president of the Senate was supposed to take over but declined for "personal reasons", leaving the task to a "collegial government" headed by the prime minister, an ally of Rajoelina.

The move was accepted by the Constitutional Court, which also dismissed appeals to have Rajoelina's candidacy declared void over his dual French nationality, sparking opposition anger.

Detractors believe that under local laws the President was to lose Madagascan nationality and with it the ability to lead the country because of the naturalisation, which was revealed by the media in June.&nbsp;

In Itaosy, an eastern suburb of Antananarivo, a few hundred people joined a peaceful opposition march on Monday.

"It's a rigged vote," said Sandra Rafarasoa, 33, standing outside her modest repair shop for two-wheelers.&nbsp;

Voters in&nbsp;Madagascar&nbsp;were initially due to head to the polls on November 9, but the top court in October ordered that the elections be postponed after a presidential candidate was injured during a demonstration.&nbsp;

The date for a potential second round vote on December 20 was kept unchanged.

Thursday's election "will not take place", said Hajo Andrianainarivelo, 56, another opposition candidate.

Vladimir Putin will be taking part in the March presidential elections in Russia, Reuters news agency reported on Monday (Nov 6) citing sources.

If he wins, which he most likely will, the Russian leader, who turned 71 on Oct 7, will remain in power until 2030, making him the longest-serving leader in Russia since the inception of the Soviet Union.

Putin succeeded Boris Yeltsin on the last day of 1999. He has already served as president for longer than any other Russian ruler since Josef Stalin.

Though the confirmation hasn’t been made official yet, Reuters reported that Putin enjoys 80 per cent approval ratings.

With no opposition leader rallying that much support, and the supposed support from the state, Putin is pegged to be the clear winner.

"The decision has been made - he will run," one of the sources who has knowledge of planning told Reuters.

Kommersant newspaper also reported, citing a source, that a formal announced would made with a few weeks.

Another source told Reuters that Putin’s advisers were preparing for his participation and that Putin has made his mind about the presidential elections.

"The world we look out upon is very dangerous," one of the sources was quoted as saying.

<h2>Official confirmation awaited&nbsp;</h2>

There has been no official confirmation from the Kremlin till now, but spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in September that if Putin decided to run, then no one would be able to compete with him.

The reports of Putin running for president come at a time when rumours about his purported ill health have been raging since the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Kremlin has dismissed reports that Putin was unwell as disinformation spread by the West.

Vladimir Putin to run for March presidential election, seeks to remain in power until at least 2030: Report

Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina has resigned after he was officially confirmed as a candidate in the Indian Ocean Island nation's presidential elections scheduled for November 9, according to the country's constitutional court.

Madagascar's constitution requires a sitting head of state, who wants to contest a presidential election, to first resign.

Rajoelina sent his resignation letter to the court on Saturday following confirmation of his candidature in the elections, the High Constitutional Court said in a statement late on Saturday.

The president of the senate is supposed to assume presidential powers when the head of state resigns but the court said the senate head, Herimanana Razafimahefa, had declined to take over.

"For personal reasons, he will not be able to fully exercise the responsibilities that the office of Head of State requires," the court said referring to Razafimahefa.

Instead, the court said, presidential power would now be exercised by the government collectively with the prime minister as the head.

Also on Saturday, Madagascar's High Court published the official list of presidential candidates. Of the 28 contenders, 13 were selected, including Rajoelina and two former presidents Marc Ravalomanana and Hery Rajaonarimampianina.

Madagascar is hoping for its third peaceful election since the upheaval of 2009, when Rajoelina ousted President Marc Ravalomananain in a coup, prompting an exodus of foreign investors from the Indian Ocean island.

Ecuador mayor survives assassination attempt ahead of general elections

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hauled $8.2 million in fundraising in the first 24 hours after he announced his candidacy for the presidential elections, confirmed his campaign to Fox News on Thursday.

The Republican's blockbuster fundraising is a move by his election campaign to showcase the strength and enthusiasm that people have for DeSantis as he steps into GOP 2024 nomination race where United States former president Donald Trump has been the clear front-runner, as per the latest polling.

The money raised by the Republican has topped the previous record of $6.3 million which was hauled by President Joe Biden when he was a White House candidate in the first 24 hours after the launch of his campaign in 2019.

The fundraising by DeSantis includes online contributions along with funds brought in by bundlers who had gathered at a DeSantis donor summit held in Miami, Florida on Thursday.

Speaking to Fox News, prominent Republican donor and bundler and oil drilling chief executive officer Dan Eberhart said, "That's an enormous haul for the first 24 hours and shows that there are thousands of donors big and small behind the governor."

Eberhart, who is extending his support to DeSantis, attended the Miami donor gathering.

Speaking about the donor gathering, Eberhart said, "I think there are a bunch of donors waiting to get off the sidelines, waiting for DeSantis to enter. I expect there to be a coalescing of conservative donors around Ron DeSantis."

Former US vice president Mike Pence is still non-committal on joining the presidential nomination race. During an interview, Pence said if he was to jump into the primaries, it would be before 'late June' this year. “I think if we have an announcement to make, it’ll be well before late June,” Pence said, adding, “Anyone that would be serious about seeking the Republican nomination would need to be in this contest by June." Despite not going all-in the race, the former Congressman has been visiting early-voting states, establishing a political staff and even releasing a memoir. WATCH | Mike Pence: 'Different times call for different leadership' × Pence criticises Trump Last month, at a public function, Pence harshly criticised former president Donald Trump for his role in the riots and said history will hold the former president accountable for being wrong. “President Trump was wrong,” said Pence. “I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day, and I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.” Experts believe his criticism of Trump is an attempt to sway the fence-sitters within the GOP to vote for him. “Make no mistake about it, what happened that day was a disgrace. And it mocks decency to portray it any other way,” added Pence. Pence has fallen on Donald Trump's wrong side ever since he refused to support his effort to overturn the 2020 election results. When asked whether he would support Trump in the 2024 elections, Pence said, "There might be somebody else I prefer more." Such has been the friction between the two leaders that Pence earlier this month said he will not appeal the judge's order compelling him to testify in the Department of Justice's (DOJ) investigation into whether the former president attempted to overturn the election or not. Biden preps to announce re-election campaign for 2024 presidential bid

Former Governor of the US state of Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson, on Sunday (April 2) announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. In an interview with ABC News, following the announcement he also positioned himself as an alternative to former United States President Donald Trump, who was recently indicted by a grand jury in New York.&nbsp;

“I have made a decision, and my decision is I’m going to run for president of the United States,” Hutchison said to ABC News. He also went on to call for the former president to drop out of the race and added that “the office is more important than any individual person.” Notably, the former governor is the first Republican to announce a campaign after Trump became the first former US president to face criminal charges.&nbsp;

“I’m running because I believe that I am the right time for America, the right candidate for our country and its future,” said Hutchinson, during the interview. He added that he is convinced that Americans want leaders which will appeal “to the best of America and not simply appeal to our worst instincts”. The presidential candidate also said that a formal announcement will be made later this month in Arkansas’ Bentonville.&nbsp;

US: Former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson announces 2024 presidential bid

Former US President Donald Trump has kicked off 2024 presidential campaign with rally in Waco, Texas. During the rally, Trump touted his accomplishments, discussed plans for the upcoming election and slammed the ongoing investigations against him.

In a statement, on Friday (March 24), the Rwandan prime minister’s office said that the cabinet has decided to synchronise the dates for its parliamentary and presidential elections. This comes after a meeting was chaired by the country’s President Paul Kagame where the ministers approved his proposal to amend the constitution, reported AFP. The move will effectively delay the parliamentary ballot which was supposed to take place later this year.&nbsp;

The incumbent president who took office in April 2000 as a former rebel chief had been regarded as a de facto leader since the end of the 1994 genocide, however, he won elections in 2003, 2010 and 2017 with more than 90 per cent of the votes.&nbsp;

The idea for this was first pitched by the new head of the National Electoral Commission, Oda Gasinzigwa, in February. Notably, he is also a senior member of Kagame’s ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). Additionally, after his most recent victory, the incumbent president made constitutional amendments that allowed him to serve a third term and could see him rule until 2034.

The parliamentary ballot which was scheduled for September 2023 has now been moved to August next year, the date originally set for the presidential election. The move, however, required parliamentary approval and was approved after the meeting on Friday, which has allowed “the harmonisation of parliamentary and presidential election calendars”, said the PM’s office, as per AFP.&nbsp;

The NEC secretary general Charles Munyaneza also told local media that the change in date will help save money as both elections, “be it the parliamentary elections or the presidential” require at least $6 million. He added, “Yet about eight billion francs ($7 million) would be enough if they were held simultaneously,” reported AFP.&nbsp;

The opposition, Democratic Green Party of Rwanda’s leader Frank Habineza told AFP, “It will be cost effective both for the state and for political parties,” while welcoming the move. He added that the state will also be able to “save taxpayers’ money which could be used to construct more roads, more schools or hospitals.”&nbsp;

In a statement, on Friday (March 24), the Rwandan prime minister’s office said that the cabinet has decided to synchronise the dates for its parliamentary and presidential elections. This comes after a meeting was chaired by the country’s President Paul Kagame where the ministers approved his proposal to amend the constitution, reported AFP. The move will effectively delay the parliamentary ballot which was supposed to take place later this year. The incumbent president who took office in April 2000 as a former rebel chief had been regarded as a de facto leader since the end of the 1994 genocide, however, he won elections in 2003, 2010 and 2017 with more than 90 per cent of the votes. The parliamentary ballot which was scheduled for September 2023 has now been moved to August next year, the date originally set for the presidential election. The move, however, required parliamentary approval and was approved after the meeting on Friday, which has allowed “the harmonisation of parliamentary and presidential election calendars”, said the PM’s office, as per AFP. The NEC secretary general Charles Munyaneza also told local media that the change in date will help save money as both elections, “be it the parliamentary elections or the presidential” require at least $6 million. He added, “Yet about eight billion francs ($7 million) would be enough if they were held simultaneously,” reported AFP. The opposition, Democratic Green Party of Rwanda’s leader Frank Habineza told AFP, “It will be cost effective both for the state and for political parties,” while welcoming the move. He added that the state will also be able to “save taxpayers’ money which could be used to construct more roads, more schools or hospitals.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Rwanda allows ‘harmonisation’ of presidential and parliamentary elections

Bola Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, has largely operated from behind the scenes during his political stint.&nbsp;He is considered a "godfather" who supports political candidates via his extensive network of patrons. With Tinubu's help, former president Muhammadu Buhari was successful in obtaining two terms in office, in 2015 and 2019.&nbsp;And Tinubu has chosen each succeeding victor to lead the greatest city in Africa since he stepped down as governor of Lagos in 2007, as per a Reuters report.&nbsp;

Tinubu’s power will now be put to the test as he works to address Nigeria's challenges and surpass Buhari's poor track record.

<h2>Bola Tinubu:&nbsp;Early life&nbsp;</h2>

Tinubu was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1952, to a Muslim family of the Yoruba ethnic group, which makes up the majority in southwest Nigeria, according to a biography on his <a href="https://batcampaign2023.site/">campaign website</a>.

He immigrated to the United States in the 1970s and supported his academic pursuits by working as a night guard, dishwasher, and taxi driver. He earned his business administration degree from Chicago State University in 1979, as per a Reuters report.

When he returned to Nigeria in the 1980s after working for US consulting firms, he took a job as an auditor with a branch of the Mobil oil company.

<h2>What is Nigeria going through?</h2>

Nigeria's economy is barely keeping up with population growth amid &nbsp;inflation and crippling cash shortages as a result of a botched launch of new banknotes, as armed groups have made large portions of the nation ungovernable.

As Tinubu ran for president under Buhari, many of these issues grew worse. While he helped shape the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, when asked at a weekend press briefing why people should elect him, he said, “My track record should speak for me. Look at Lagos: Before I came, we had dead bodies on the road, a chaotic traffic system, and robbery daytime, and nighttime.”

“Come on: clap for me,” he added in an appearance typical of the hubris that often marks leaders of Africa’s top oil producer and most populous country, reports&nbsp;Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>What do Tinubu's supporters view him as?</h2>

Supporters of Tinubu view him as a capable technocrat who has a history of being a successful administrator.

He co-founded and provided funding for the Alliance for Democracy, which later changed its name to the Action Congress of Nigeria, and then assisted in the formation of the APC. His supporters describe&nbsp;him as a shrewd political strategist.

He played a key role in uniting the All Progressives Congress (APC) divisions, enabling Buhari to win in 2015 and overthrow the opposition People's Democratic Party&nbsp;(PDP) after 16 years in office.

Tinubu's political clout was largely responsible for Buhari's election, the first triumph for the opposition in the nation, and his re-election in 2019.

Opponents claim he rewards loyalists with lucrative contracts and high-paying jobs and has in the past used so-called "area boys," who formally run Lagos' streets and frequently show up at his rallies, to threaten opponents if he doesn't get his way.

The 70-year-old tends to disregard such accusations rather than respond to them. In spite of persistent attempts to respond, Tinubu's campaign spokesperson remained silent.&nbsp;

<h2>Corruption charges&nbsp;</h2>

Concerns have been raised about Tinubu's financial transactions while in office.

He is regarded&nbsp;as one of Nigeria's wealthiest politicians, and when he left the government, he was charged with money laundering, corruption, and running more than a dozen overseas bank accounts. He says he did nothing illegal and was never prosecuted, says&nbsp;a report&nbsp;by Aljazeera.&nbsp;

He was described as "wobbly, wonky, and narcotic-devastated" by PDP opponents on the campaign trail in reference to his health issues and a 1993 US court document that detailed a "drug-related confiscation of property" from his US bank account.

He has stakes in a variety of businesses, including media, aviation, tax consulting, hotels, and real estate holdings, although it is unknown where his fortune comes from.

A critic called him "a greedy politician" who had exhausted&nbsp;significant sources of income in Lagos, as per Al Jazeera.

<h2>A tight race in Nigeria</h2>

For the first time since Nigeria's military coup ended in 1999, the election was tight when Obi, 61, attracted younger voters with his message of change.

In Lagos, Tinubu's traditional stronghold and the state with the most registered voters, he achieved a significant win, as reported by AFP.

The vote on Saturday was largely calm but was marred by protracted wait times at some polling places and some claims of intimidation.
