China's Foreign Ministry on Monday said Arsenal's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/arsenal-star-mesut-ozil-condemns-muslim-silence-over-uighurs-268231">Mesut Ozil</a> "had been completely deceived by fake news and false statements" after the midfielder criticised the country’s policy toward its Muslim Uighur minority.

Arsenal distanced itself from Ozil's comments, saying that they were entirely his personal opinion. China’s state broadcaster CCTV later removed Arsenal’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/impact-of-brexit-on-english-premier-league-182399">Premier League</a> game against Manchester City from its Sunday broadcast schedule.

The United Nations and human rights groups estimate that between 1 million and 2 million people, mostly ethnic <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/gravitas-world-calls-out-china-on-mass-detention-of-uighur-muslims-206630">Uighur Muslims</a>, have been detained in harsh conditions in Xinjiang as part of what Beijing calls an anti-terrorism campaign.

China has repeatedly denied any mistreatment of Uighurs.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a briefing: "I don’t know if Mr. Ozil has ever been to Xinjiang personally but he’s been completely deceived by fake news and false statements have influenced his judgment."

"We also welcome Mr. Ozil to come to Xinjiang if he has the chance, to take a walk and look around, as long as he has a conscience, is able to distinguish right from wrong and uphold the principles of objectivity and fairness, he will see a different Xinjiang," he added.

Liverpool manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/juergen-klopp-hails-salahs-sensational-finish-267582">Juergen Klopp</a> has agreed on a contract extension until 2024, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp took the reins at Liverpool in October 2015 and guided them to back-to-back Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019, winning their sixth European cup last season.

"For me personally this is a statement of intent, one which is built on my knowledge of what we as a partnership have achieved so far and what is still there for us to achieve," Klopp said in a statement on the club's website.

"When the call (to manage Liverpool) came in autumn 2015, I felt we were perfect for each other. If anything, now I feel I underestimated that.

"It is only with a total belief that the collaboration remains totally complementary on both sides that I am able to make this commitment to 2024."

The club said the German manager's assistants Peter Krawietz and Pep Lijnders had also agreed on new deals.

This season, they are well poised to end their 30-year wait for a top-flight league title after going unbeaten in the first 16 games, with an eight-point lead over second-placed Leicester City.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool</a> moved into the last 16 of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-in-eye-of-storm-against-salzburg-267519">Champions League</a> with a 2-0 victory over Salzburg on Tuesday as a potentially tricky encounter turned into a second-half cruise with quickfire goals from Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah.

Juergen Klopp's side needed a point in Austria to be sure of qualification and after missing several good chances in the first half, they ended up with a comfortable win which should have been by a more convincing margin.

Two goals inside two second-half minutes from Keita and Salah, with the Egyptian finding the net with an exquisite finish from a tight angle, helped Liverpool finish top of Group E with 13 points.

That was one point ahead of Napoli, who beat Genk 4-0, while <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-erratic-napoli-held-by-salzburg-as-haaland-strikes-again-260255">Salzburg</a>, who finished third with seven points, will continue in the Europa League.

"It was a tough game but we were there - that's what I love from my team. Salzburg did so many smart things, but we had big chances. It was a very intense game. In the second half they obviously couldn't cope with that intensity," said Klopp.

Although the away defeat and a home draw with Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli had left Liverpool on edge going into the final round of games, their superior quality showed in the end.

With much at stake for two attacking sides, the game began in a frantic and open fashion and Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker had to be alert in the seventh minute to keep out a close-range effort from South Korean <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-erratic-napoli-held-by-salzburg-as-haaland-strikes-again-260255">Hwang Hee-chan </a>after good work from the lively Japanese forward Takumi Minamino.

Mane missed a good opportunity, curling wide from the edge of the box and then brought Salzburg keeper Cican Stankovic into action with a diagonal drive.

Highly-rated Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, failed to make the most of space inside the box and his low shot was easily dealt with by the Liverpool keeper.

The biggest chance of the half came in the 29th minute when <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/from-nicolas-pepe-to-cedric-bakambu-top-five-transfers-featuring-african-players-240159">Keita</a> put in Salah, but unmarked and inside the box, the Egyptian's shot was badly off target.

The 19-year-old Haaland missed another opportunity, six minutes after the interval, but Liverpool were beginning to get a grip on midfield and dictate the tempo.

The runaway Premier League leaders settled their nerves when Keita headed them in front, against his former club, in the 57th minute.

Andy Robertson fed Mane who burst down the left past <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/europa-league-arsenal-slump-to-defeat-against-french-club-rennes-201871">Jerome Onguene</a> and he rounded Salzburg keeper Cican Stankovic, who had rushed out of his area, before lofting a cross into the box which was firmly headed home by Keita.

A minute later, Stankovic's readiness to leave his area was behind the second goal, as Salah, wide on the right, pushed the ball around him and then impressively slotted home from the tightest possible angle.

Liverpool were in firm control from then on and wasted several chances to add to their total with Salah and Mane both missing opportunities.

Salzburg will take some comfort from their enterprising first-half performance and their overall displays in the group stage, which earned praise from Klopp.

"I couldn't have more respect for what Salzburg are doing. When you see how good they were in the first game, against Napoli and against Genk. We could have come here as reigning champions and misunderstood the situation, but I love how smart we were against them," he said.

Manchester United forward <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-rashford-double-as-united-spoil-mourinhos-return-266316">Marcus Rashford</a> has all the attributes to be as good as five-times Ballon d'Or winner <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cristiano-ronaldo-skips-ballon-dor-to-receive-serie-a-player-of-the-year-award-in-italy-266021">Cristiano Ronaldo</a>, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

Rashford scored in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/united-win-feisty-manchester-derby-as-liverpool-secure-christmas-no1-266926">United's 2-1 win</a> over champions Manchester City at the weekend to take his tally to 10 league goals for the season, already equalling his best return in the top flight midway through the campaign.

The 22-year-old England international has 13 goals in his last 14 games for club and country and Solskjaer said he saw similarities with Portuguese forward Ronaldo, who scored 118 times in 292 appearances for United from 2003-2009.

"It's very easy to compare the two of them, yes," Solskjaer said. "Both with skills, body shape, attitude, attributes – everything. The boy has every chance in the world to become a top, top player. Let's hope he continues like this."

Rashford has previously been criticised for a perceived lack of composure in front of goal but he is flourishing under Solskjaer, who scored 126 goals in 366 appearances as a player for United.

The Norwegian said there was much more to come from Rashford.

"As long as he keeps being positive and being direct and thinking about getting in front of the goal and getting chances, he'll score goals," Solskjaer said.

United, who are fifth in the Premier League, face Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/unai-emery-reaches-breaking-point-as-arsenal-crash-in-europa-league-265159">Europa League</a> on Thursday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-slump-to-first-home-defeat-by-brighton-266535">Arsenal</a> scored three quickfire second-half goals through Gabriel Martinelli, Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to beat West Ham United 3-1 away as they ended a seven-match winless run in the Premier League on Monday.

After a poor start to the game by both sides, the Hammers took the lead seven minutes before the break when Angelo Ogbonna charged into a crowded box to head home a Pablo Fornals cross at the London Stadium.

But Arsenal, with interim coach Freddie Ljungberg searching for his first win since taking over from the sacked Unai Emery, equalised on the hour thanks to a sharp finish from Brazilian Martinelli, his first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/late-fernandez-strike-gives-newcastle-2-1-win-over-southampton-267124">Premier League</a> goal.

Six minutes later record signing Pepe put the visitors ahead with a superb curling shot into the far corner after being set up by a clever back-heel from Aubameyang.

The pair reversed roles for Arsenal's third with Frenchman Pepe chipping a cross into the box and Aubameyang volleying home on the turn after 69 minutes.

"It means so much for the players. They have been living under enormous pressure and you see it in their performances," said Ljungberg.

"You can see the players have been a bit low and you see in the dressing room the relief and how happy they are. We enjoy tonight and we continue working tomorrow. We have to work on our belief -- that was the difference," he said.

The win took Arsenal up to ninth on 22 points from 16 games, while West Ham's third straight home loss leaves them in 16th place on 16 points, only a point above the relegation zone, and increases the pressure on Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-not-on-par-with-european-elite-says-guardiola-267118">Manchester City</a> boss said he was sure he could turn the club's fortunes around, however.

"The pressure for me is exactly the same if we win or lose. When you don't have results things are more difficult. If I had not seen the team play the way they did in the first 65 minutes, I might have doubts," he added.

"For 60 minutes there was just one team on the pitch. But football can be like this.

"We made mistakes in moments of defending. The problem was a lack of patience and quality to decide the game with a second goal and we made important mistakes in defence," he added.

Premier League: Arsenal stage comeback to sink West Ham and end winless run

Leicester City set a club record of eight successive top-flight wins after two goals from Jamie Vardy helped them to an impressive 4-1 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-resilient-chelsea-bounce-back-to-beat-manchester-city-2-1-267121">Premier League</a> victory at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Kelechi Iheanacho and Jonny Evans were also on target for Leicester, who served up a performance akin to those which produced a memorable title run in 2015-16 as they missed several chances to win by a bigger margin.

The result left the Foxes second in the standings on 38 points from 16 games, eight adrift of runaway <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/united-win-feisty-manchester-derby-as-liverpool-secure-christmas-no1-266926">leaders Liverpool</a> and six ahead of third-placed champions Manchester City, while Villa slipped to 17th on 15 points.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-leicester-will-not-sell-players-in-january-says-rodgers-263858">Leicester </a>manager Brendan Rodgers heaped praise on his players.

"I thought they were amazing, it is a historical day for the club and the performance warranted that," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We scored all types of goals today and kept going to the end and tried to keep scoring goals."

The league's top scorer Vardy fired Leicester ahead with his 15th goal of the season in the 20th minute when he shook off Ezri Konsa and slotted the ball in after rounding goalkeeper Tom Heaton with a sublime first touch.

Iheanacho made it 2-0 with a deft finish from a fizzing low cross by James Maddison before Jack Grealish pulled one back for Villa on the stroke of halftime, burying a powerful shot from 12 metres past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Centre back Evans restored Leicester's two-goal advantage with a looping header from 10 metres shortly after the break, rising above his marker to meet a Maddison corner.

The effervescent Maddison, who tormented the home team's defence all afternoon, shaved the post with a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 67th minute as Leicester continued to dominate.

Vardy put the icing on the cake for the rampant visitors in the 76th minute after he raced clear of Matt Targett from the halfway line and drove the ball past Heaton into the bottom right corner.

Evans, who won three Premier League titles with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/united-win-feisty-manchester-derby-as-liverpool-secure-christmas-no1-266926">Manchester United</a>, was upbeat about Leicester's chances of finishing in the top four.

Following on from her six-goal salvo last week, Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema added another brace in a comfortable win over Reading to keep Arsenal top on 24 points, with Chelsea two points behind and with a game in hand. Manchester City are third on 21 points, with newcomers Manchester United now up to fourth thanks to a 3-1 win over Everton in which teenage midfielder Lauren James scored twice. In the day's other games, bottom side Liverpool ended a run of four straight defeats with a gritty 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United, while an own goal by Brighton & Hove Albion defender Victoria Williams gifted Tottenham Hotspur a 1-0 home win. Sunday's late kick off saw Birmingham City beat Bristol City 2-0 to climb above Brighton into ninth place on seven points, while Bristol remain second from bottom on three points after nine games.

Resilient Chelsea bounce back to beat Manchester City 2-1

The balance of football power in Manchester has swung comprehensively to City from United on the field and the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-slump-to-first-home-defeat-by-brighton-266535">Premier League</a> champions are now on the verge of toppling their neighbours in the financial stakes as well.

Despite failing to hit the heights of their past two title-winning campaigns, City host United on Saturday already 11 points ahead of their local rivals just 15 games into the league season.

The Red Devils sit sixth, eight points adrift of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/messi-scores-in-700th-match-as-barcelona-ease-into-knockout-stages-264968">Champions League</a> places, and facing a huge fight to get back into that highly lucrative competition next season.

As City try and win the Champions League for the first time, having already booked their place in the last 16 for a seventh consecutive season, United's finances are suffering as they play Europa League football for the second time in four years.

United posted record revenues of £627 million ($818 million) for last season as they reached the Champions League quarter-finals and finished sixth in the Premier League.

That was nearly £100 million more than City's £535 million for the 2018/19 campaign despite the blue half of Manchester winning an unprecedented domestic treble of Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

However, United predict their revenue will fall to between £560 million and £580 million this season due to the drastically smaller broadcasting deals and prize money on offer in the Europa League.

City's figures for this season will also be boosted by a £650 million kit sponsorship deal between parent company, the City Football Group (CFG), and Puma for the next 10 seasons.

That deal is still lower than United's £750 million 10-year deal signed with Adidas in 2014, but it signals the shrinking difference in the commercial value of the two clubs.

"I think the gap will narrow substantially," football finance expert Kieran Maguire told AFP. "From just under £100 million this year between the two clubs, that gap will be narrowed to £10-20 million for 2019/2020."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-jesus-double-gives-manchester-city-much-needed-win-at-burnley-266167">City's success</a> over the past decade has been bankrolled by the club's Abu Dhabi owners, who have at times fallen foul of UEFA's financial fair play rules with sponsorship deemed above market value such as shirt and stadium deals with Etihad Airways, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government.

However, the Puma contract shows that City's success on the field means they are no longer reliant on their commercial deals coming from the Middle East.

"They have also got sponsorship deals with the likes of Nissan and Nexen Tire," added Maguire. "On the back of winning the Premier League four times in the decade and having a global profile, they are not as dependant on the Middle East for sponsorship deals as they were compared to the initial Etihad deal."

City's rise was reflected when US equity firm Silver Lake acquired just over a 10 percent stake of CFG for $500 million last week.

That gave CFG a global record valuation for a&nbsp;sports&nbsp;franchise of $4.8 billion.

By comparison, United's market capitalisation is just over $3 billion, but also jumped on the news of the investment in City.

"In the 24 hours following the Silver Lake investment, United's market capitalisation itself went up by 11 percent, so perhaps the markets are saying we have undervalued United's valuation and potential," said Maguire.

Days after the Silver Lake investment, CFG announced that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-owners-to-add-mumbai-team-to-their-collection-265061">Mumbai City</a> would become the eighth club in a global empire that already contains New York City FC, Melbourne City, Yokohama Marinos in Japan, Sichuan Jiuniu in China, Spanish second division side Girona and Club Atletico Torque in Uruguay.

"They see growth in the overseas markets," added Maguire. "Silver Lake would not have put the money in unless they thought there was greater growth potential in the City Group."

United were the club that pioneered the commercialisation of football on the back of their success under Alex Ferguson in the 1990s.

But since Ferguson's retirement in 2013, United have finished below their local rivals every season.

Now it is City, with their web of clubs around the globe and trophy-laden years under Pep Guardiola, who are leaving Manchester's traditional giant trailing on and off the field.

Manchester City flex financial muscle to leave Manchester United lagging behind

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-draw-everton-in-fa-cup-third-round-265919">Everton</a> have sacked manager Marco Silva the day after dropping into the relegation zone following a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">5-2 defeat</a> at Merseyside rivals Liverpool, the Premier League club said on Thursday.

Silva, who arrived at Goodison Park in May 2018, has left with the team languishing 18th in the table on 14 points after they lost nine of their 15 league games this season.

"Everton Football Club can confirm that manager Marco Silva has left the Club," Everton said on their website.&nbsp;

"Majority Shareholder Farhad Moshiri, Chairman Bill Kenwright and the Board of Directors would like to thank Marco for his service over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future," the statement added.

"Duncan Ferguson has taken temporary charge of the first team and will manage the side for the game against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-abraham-return-helps-chelsea-beat-villa-266321">Chelsea</a> on Saturday. The Club aims to confirm a new permanent manager as swiftly as possible."

It is the latest managerial failure at Everton after Dutchman Ronald Koeman's ill-fated spell ended in October, 2017 and his replacement Sam Allardyce was dismissed with a year remaining on his contract before the club turned to Silva.

Silva was reported to have survived one round of emergency talks among the Everton hierarchy after the home loss to Norwich City last month but his dismissal was no surprise following defeats by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">Leicester City and Liverpool</a>.

Everton conceded five league goals against Liverpool for the first time since 1982, and the Portuguese coach conceded his players had buckled under the pressure at Anfield.

British media reported that former Everton boss David Moyes is favourite to replace Silva at Goodison Park, although that would likely receive a mixed reaction from the fans.

Moyes, who had a successful 11-year stint in charge at Goodison Park from 2002-13, would likely be joined by former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill as part of his coaching staff.

Silva has now managed three <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-arsenal-slump-to-first-home-defeat-by-brighton-266535">Premier League</a> clubs after a spell with Hull City, which ended in relegation and his departure, and at Watford, where he was sacked after interest from Everton but also a poor run of results.

The 42-year-old's failure to bring success to Goodison will have disappointed Moshiri who found himself in a bitter row with Watford to gain the services of the Portuguese.

After Silva was eventually fired by Watford, he was given significant investment in new players with Everton looking to break into the top six and push for a Champions League place.

They have spent over 200 million pounds&nbsp;in the past two close-season transfer windows but few of the players brought in have made a positive impact and the club instead faces a battle at the wrong end of the table.

The on-the-field troubles come at a time when Everton plan to move to a new stadium and are in marked contrast to the fortunes of neighbours Liverpool, who are European champions and current runaway Premier League leaders.

Former striker Ferguson, a long-time member of the Everton coaching staff under various managers, is not viewed as a major contender for the top job.

Football: Everton sack manager Silva after Merseyside derby humbling

Arsenal lost to Brighton &amp; Hove Albion at home for the first time ever on Thursday night as goals by Adam Webster and Neal Maupay lifted the visitors to a 2-1 victory in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">Premier League</a>.

Arsenal, who <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/sacked-unai-emery-honoured-to-coach-arsenal-265333">fired Unai Emery</a> as manager last week and appointed former player Freddie Ljungberg as caretaker boss, now sit 10th in the table on 19 points, with Brighton a single point behind and three places below them.

"Of course, it's disappointing but we've got to keep on going," Ljungberg told reporters. "The players are low on confidence, I think you can see that.

"We're in a difficult situation. We started the game flat with no energy. It's my job to get them to be aggressive and play with energy."

Brighton had an early chance when Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin brought down Aaron Connolly on the edge of the area, but Pascal Gross blasted his free kick straight into the Arsenal wall.

The visitors poured forward, with Maupay whipping in a shot from a tight angle that raced narrowly past keeper Bernd Leno's far post.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 36th minute when centre back Webster pounced on the ball as it broke loose after a corner, poking home past Leno to give the visitors the lead.

Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette equalised five minutes into the second half with a high looping header from a Mesut Ozil corner which bounced in off the far post.

The home side briefly thought they had taken the lead when David Luiz shanked the ball home from a free kick, only for the Brazilian to be found clearly offside by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-rule-makers-look-at-ways-of-providing-more-information-about-var-decisions-266170">VAR</a>.

Instead, Brighton's Maupay headed a cross from Aaron Mooy into the far corner past Leno in the 80th minute to give Potter's side a historic win in north London.

"It's fantastic to get the three points here tonight," Potter told reporters.

"I'm proud of the players. They stuck at it and managed the situations quite well, and played well against some talented players, and a nice winning goal - a bit of quality from us," he added.

"Maybe it gives us confidence that we're on the path to doing something."

Premier League: Arsenal slump to first home defeat by Brighton

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says smiles are back on the faces of his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-flex-financial-muscle-to-leave-manchester-united-lagging-behind-266573">Manchester United</a> players after their victory against Tottenham as he prepares to take on defending champions Manchester City.

United ruined Jose Mourinho's Old Trafford return on Wednesday, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-rashford-double-as-united-spoil-mourinhos-return-266316">winning 2-1</a> to end their former manager's perfect start to his reign at Spurs.

They are sixth in the table, still, eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea, but Solskjaer said the win was a shot in the arm for his team after two disappointing draws.

"Confidence is a strange&nbsp;thing in football," he said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. "You can get performances and results like Wednesday night and it boosts it so much.

"And I know our boys will be up for it, energy-wise they should be fine, 24 hours less recovery time shouldn't matter (City played on Tuesday), go on adrenaline. I expect them to have had a good night's sleep and the smiles are back on faces."

The Norwegian described City as "arguably the&nbsp;best team in England" even though they trail <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">Premier League leaders</a> Liverpool by 11 points.

"I said it before (Spurs) that this is a chance for everyone. It was doom and gloom, but it's a chance to turn that doubt into belief and, for us, if we can manage to get another performance the confidence, the way we played against Tottenham, if we can do that at the Etihad we can come out of it with a result.

"People say 'why do you not have better results in other games?'. But the Premier League is hard.

"No matter who you play, it's margins, I think it's a compliment to the league. You've got City, Liverpool, Leicester consistent, but the other games are really tight."

One man playing at the top of his game is forward <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-rashford-double-as-united-spoil-mourinhos-return-266316">Marcus Rashford</a>, who has scored 12 goals in his past 13 games for club and country.

"He's consistently now scoring, but it's not like four in one and two or three without," said Solskjaer.

"It's not just in spurts, but he's consistently getting chances, into better positions, and on Wednesday night he was unbelievable and hope to see that again."

Solskjaer moved to Old Trafford in 1996, just after City had been relegated to the second tier of English football.

And it was not until 2001 that the Norwegian faced them in a 1-1 home draw.

"At least we play every year now," he said about his derby memories. "Took many years before I played a Manchester derby myself, it's changed in a way.

"<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-jesus-double-gives-manchester-city-much-needed-win-at-burnley-266167">Man City</a> are a better team now than when I was playing. Football has changed quite a lot, was allowed a few more proper tackles.

"With every little angle everything is being scrutinised now. It's more of a technical, tactical game than physical or mental. A derby should be played as a derby. We don't play basketball and we're ready if that happens.

"Manchester derbies are always special games, but you can't say it matters more. For the fans, of course. We're up for it."

Paul Pogba will be absent again following his ankle injury but Anthony Martial returns to the squad.

Solskjaer says 'smiles back on Manchester United faces' ahead of derby

Tammy Abraham scored a goal and set up another on his return from injury as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday to put their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-enjoy-derby-demolition-as-it-sets-new-club-record-leicester-still-chasing-266306">Premier League</a> campaign back on track after two straight defeats.

Abraham headed home from close range for his 11th league goal of the season in the 24th minute after a lofted cross by right back Reece James, another of the home-grown players at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Chelsea</a> who have flourished under coach Frank Lampard.

Villa equalised with their first real chance in the 41st minute when Egyptian Trezeguet headed a cross from his compatriot Ahmed El Mohamady down on to his own foot and the ball crossed the line.

Chelsea regained the lead in style three minutes into the second half when Abraham - who played for Villa last season on loan - chested a cross by Willian invitingly for fellow academy graduate Mason Mount to volley home.

Abraham, 22, missed Chelsea's 1-0 home defeat by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jose-mourinho-makes-instant-impact-as-tottenham-defeat-west-ham-264133">West Ham United</a> due to injury and Lampard heaped praise on the forward whose form has earned him a call-up for England.

"He’s showing his all-round game, he stretches defences, he starts our press," Lampard said. "He's a personality that has grown in our dressing room every day with his enthusiasm and his will to win, and of course with players on such a good run, when they come out of the team you can miss them."

Chelsea went in search of a third goal and Willian came closest to getting it when the Brazilian's free kick was touched onto a post by Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga denied Ezri Konsa Ngoyo a late equaliser.

The result left Chelsea in fourth place, six points above fifth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. Aston Villa are 15th and only one point clear of the relegation area.

Villa coach Dean Smith said his team were second best to Chelsea and started both halves on the back foot unlike in their previous game when they battled to a 2-2 draw at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-rashford-double-as-united-spoil-mourinhos-return-266316">Manchester United</a>.

"I feel that we can be as good as teams like Chelsea. We have got to be more consistent in our play to do that," he said. "Tonight we weren’t as consistent as we were on Sunday against Manchester United."

Former Chelsea captain John Terry, now Villa's assistant head coach, stepped on to the pitch after the match to applause from the home fans. The former England captain played 717 times for Chelsea.

Tammy Abraham scored a goal and set up another on his return from injury as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday to put their Premier League campaign back on track after two straight defeats.

"He's a personality that has grown in our dressing room every day with his enthusiasm and his will to win, and of course with players on such a good run, when they come out of the team you can miss them." Chelsea went in search of a third goal and Willian came closest to getting it when the Brazilian's free kick was touched onto a post by Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton. Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga denied Ezri Konsa Ngoyo a late equaliser. The result left Chelsea in fourth place, six points above fifth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. Aston Villa are 15th and only one point clear of the relegation area. Villa coach Dean Smith said his team were second best to Chelsea and started both halves on the back foot unlike in their previous game when they battled to a 2-2 draw at Manchester United. "I feel that we can be as good as teams like Chelsea. We have got to be more consistent in our play to do that," he said. "Tonight we weren’t as consistent as we were on Sunday against Manchester United." Former Chelsea captain John Terry, now Villa's assistant head coach, stepped on to the pitch after the match to applause from the home fans. The former England captain played 717 times for Chelsea.

Premier League: Abraham return helps Chelsea beat Villa

Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford ended in defeat as Marcus Rashford scored twice for Manchester United in a deserved 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">Mourinho</a> was sacked as United manager almost a year ago and this was his first defeat in four games since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs last month.

After their worst start to a season since 1988, United fans were justified in viewing Mourinho's return with apprehension.

But a hugely encouraging night for United ended with the Stretford End roaring their approval of his successor <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/more-frustration-for-solskjaer-as-manchester-united-held-by-villa-265635">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> after an impressive performance by his team lifted them to sixth in the table.

Rashford put United ahead in the seventh minute but a piece of technical brilliance from Dele Alli brought Spurs level, only for a 49th-minute Rashford penalty to secure the three points for the hosts.

The England striker was at his very best, strutting around the frontline and terrifying the Spurs defence but Solskjaer will also be delighted with a hugely improved performance from oft-criticised Brazilian midfielder Fred.

The opener was scored when Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez came off second best in a tussle with Jesse Lingard and the ball fell to Rashford, who confidently unleashed a low drive which rattled in off the post.

Rashford went close again with an 18th-minute free kick which curled past Paulo Gazzaniga’s right-hand post.

Argentine keeper Gazzaniga was soon in action again to keep out a low shot from Greenwood – after Daniel James again caused problems for Jan Vertonghen.

Rashford was playing with real swagger and he went close to a second in the 25th minute with a perfectly struck, dipping drive which Gazzaniga brilliantly tipped on to the bar.

With Scott McTominay a powerful presence, United were dominating midfield and continued to threaten the Spurs goal, Rashford floating a shot just wide and Lingard going close.

But a moment of brilliance at the other end brought <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jose-mourinho-makes-instant-impact-as-tottenham-defeat-west-ham-264133">Tottenham</a> level six minutes before the break.

Serge Aurier's shot was saved by the legs of David De Gea, the ball looped high in the air and Alli produced a remarkable piece of skill to bring the ball down and twist past Fred and Ashley Young before finishing with aplomb.

After all their pressure it was tough on United to go in at the interval without a lead but they were soon to restore their advantage.

Cutting in from the left, Rashford jinked past Aurier, burst into the box and was tripped by Moussa Sissoko, earning a penalty which he took and, from a short run-up, slotted home.

Gazzaniga saved Spurs again with a fine diving stop from James and when Mourinho introduced Christian Eriksen to the midfield Spurs threatened more, but there was real grit about United.

Alli tested De Gea with a low shot in stoppage time but the night belonged to Rashford and a young United side who got the perfect boost before Saturday's trip to the Etihad Stadium for the Manchester derby.

"This is the hardest we've had to work to get a result," Rashford said.

"The position we're in now, we want these games. We want to show people we can play against top teams."

Premier League: Rashford double as United spoil Mourinho's return

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-draw-everton-in-fa-cup-third-round-265919">Liverpool</a>'s bandwagon rolled on as they crushed Merseyside rivals Everton 5-2 at Anfield but Leicester City's pursuit continued with a seventh successive <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-jesus-double-gives-manchester-city-much-needed-win-at-burnley-266167">Premier League</a> victory to stay eight points behind on Wednesday.

Even with strikers Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino warming the bench, Juergen Klopp's side had far too much firepower with Divock Origi scoring twice as Liverpool set a new club record of 32 league games undefeated.

While a first title for 30 years is beckoning Liverpool, pressure is piling up on Everton boss Marco Silva as his side dropped into the relegation zone, below Southampton who beat fellow strugglers Norwich City 2-1.

Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford was not a happy one as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/im-a-better-coach-for-united-stint-jose-mourinho-266138">Manchester United</a> striker Marcus Rashford's double earned his side a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Leicester beat bottom club Watford 2-0 as they equalled a club record winning streak dating back to 1963, Jamie Vardy and James Maddison scoring after the break to lift Brendan Rodgers's side three points above champions Manchester City.

"Seven wins on the spin in the Premier League is a great achievement, we have a winning mentality," Rodgers said. "We fight and work and see where it takes us."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard got the better of former team mate John Terry, assistant manager at Aston Villa, as his side shrugged off back-to-back league defeats with a 2-1 victory to consolidate fourth spot.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now unbeaten in 10 league games,&nbsp;their best run in the top flight for 40 years,&nbsp;as they cruised to a 2-0 victory over West Ham United.

Wolves jumped to fifth spot, six behind Chelsea.

With Adam Lallana also given a start as Klopp rotated his squad at the start of a hectic month, Liverpool underlined their depth as they blew Everton away in the highest-scoring Mersey derby since 1933.

A mesmerising attacking display saw them net four goals before halftime with Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri scoring to make the most of rare starts. Sadio Mane was also on target although Everton played their part with Michael Keane and Richarlison keeping them in the contest.

A calmer second half brought only a late goal for Georginio Wijnaldum as Liverpool moved to 43 points from 15 games, eight ahead of Leicester and 11 clear of champions Manchester City.

"The players coming in were fantastic, it's good to see, we will need everyone in this long season," Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said.

"We have to use everyone and they all stepped up."

Mourinho, sacked a year ago by Manchester United, returned to the north west in good heart after his first three games for Tottenham all brought victories while his United successor <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/more-frustration-for-solskjaer-as-manchester-united-held-by-villa-265635">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> was under pressure after the Reds' worst start to a season since 1988.

United produced the kind of vibrant display that has been a rarity this season and Rashford was superb. He opened the scoring early and tucked away a penalty in the second half after Dele Alli had equalised for Tottenham.

It was a dominant display by United who moved above Tottenham into sixth spot with 21 points from 15 games.

"It was the best performance Marcus Rashford has had under me," Solskjaer said of the young England striker. "It's like he was back on the playground."

Mourinho, given a friendly welcome, said his side had started too slowly.

"We need to win more duels, we need to start the game with more intensity," the Portuguese said. "We need to make the opponent feel what United made us feel."

Tammy Abraham returned for Chelsea after injury and headed the opening goal against Villa. Trezeguet bundled in a Villa equaliser but Mason Mount's thumping volley sealed victory.

Premier League: Liverpool enjoy derby demolition as it sets new club record, Leicester still chasing

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-extend-lead-at-top-as-manchester-city-chelsea-falter-265516">Manchester City</a>'s Gabriel Jesus struck twice and Rodri scored a screamer in a 4-1 win at Burnley on Tuesday as the champions showed signs they may be able to keep the Premier League title race alive.

The victory takes <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/guardiola-rules-out-manchester-city-january-spree-265868">Pep Guardiola</a>'s side, who had drawn at Newcastle United on Saturday, into provisional second spot and back within eight points of leaders Liverpool ahead of the Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield on Wednesday.

Jesus opened the scoring in the 24th minute and doubled City’s advantage five minutes after the break before a spectacular drive from Rodri and a low drilled shot from substitute Riyad Mahrez made it four.

A late consolation from Burnley substitute Robbie Brady will have annoyed Guardiola, whose side have now gone eight games in all competitions without a clean sheet but, that aside, this was back to business for City.

The Spaniard, though, dismissed talk of a title race comeback.

"For the distance we have with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-draw-everton-in-fa-cup-third-round-265919">Liverpool</a> it would be crazy to think about the title, we have to think about the (weekend Manchester) derby, the other competitions, and take this rhythm," he told the post-match news conference.

The way the City players celebrated the win showed they knew they could ill-afford another slip-up after being held at Newcastle United on Saturday.

In recent weeks City have looked well below the standards set in their two straight title campaigns and this season they had already dropped 13 points in their 14 games, only three short of their total for the whole of the last campaign.

With only one win in their last five games in all competitions, the pressure on City was real but the gap in quality between the elite clubs and the tightly-packed middle ranks of the Premier League was soon evident.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche switched from his usual 4-4-2 to a five-man midfield with Danny Drinkwater, on loan from Chelsea, making his first Premier League appearance in 21 months, but neither he nor his team mates troubled the champions.

City began to move the ball around with the kind of confidence and precision that has been their hallmark under Guardiola and they were soon ahead.

The breakthrough came after a swift exchange of passes ended with David Silva threading the ball to Jesus who, filling in for the injured Sergio Aguero, curled a shot into the far corner.

The lead could have been doubled two minutes before the interval when, after rare Burnley pressure, City broke and the counter ended with a Bernardo Silva drive which keeper Nick Pope saved superbly with his outstretched leg.

The second goal came when Bernardo Silva curled a probing cross towards the back post and Jesus reacted quickly to get in front of his marker Phil Bardsley and volley home.

Jesus, who had not scored in his previous 10 games for club or country, was buzzing and went close to a third with a burst of pace and another shot that fizzed just wide of the far post.

A blocked shot from David Silva then fell to Rodri on the edge of the box and the Spaniard blasted a thundering, unstoppable drive past Pope to make it three in the 68th minute.

Mahrez, given acres of space, got the fourth goal three minutes from the end with a low shot from the edge of the box before Brady gave the muted home crowd some cheer in the cold.

"We played with an incredible amount of passes and we needed that," said Guardiola. "Here at Burnley it is not easy. We conceded one chance in the first half but we played in a clever way and it is a good performance," he added.

Premier League: Jesus double gives Manchester City much-needed win at Burnley

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-guardiola-is-the-best-manager-in-the-world-juergen-klopp-260679">Pep Guardiola</a> says he will not be splashing out in January to revive Manchester City's flagging <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-extend-lead-at-top-as-manchester-city-chelsea-falter-265516">Premier League</a> title fortunes despite the yawning gap to leaders Liverpool.

The champions, in third place and trailing Jurgen Klopp's men by 11 points after 14 matches, visit Burnley on Tuesday.

City have gone seven games without a clean sheet, which Guardiola said was not "good enough" and the club have been linked with Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu.

But he played down the idea of buying a centre-back when the transfer window re-opens next month.

Instead he will keep his faith in Fernandinho and await the return of Aymeric Laporte after a lengthy absence with a knee injury.

Asked if City's transfer strategy had changed, Guardiola said: "No. I don't want any players in January.

"If we cannot do it in summer, we cannot do in January. When they come for an incredible opportunity in January for the next four, five, six years, maybe we could think about it, but that is not possible.

"Normally the players we could think it would be interesting to add something for our squad, they are not going to sell."

Since losing Laporte in August, and following the exit of captain Vincent Kompany, Guardiola has deployed Fernandinho, usually a holding midfielder, in defence.

And he will turn to the Brazilian again at Turf Moor despite the direct approach of the hosts and aerial and physical threat of Burnley forward pair Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

"Fernandinho is not the reason why we win or lose. When we beat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Chelsea</a>, everyone said how fantastic Fernandinho was," said Guardiola.

"When we don't win it's because of Fernandinho. It will be my decision. I like him in that position because of the build-up for the fast, for the long balls, many things."

City will be without the suspended Ilkay Gundogan in midfield and striker Sergio Aguero, the matchwinner at Burnley last season, with a thigh injury that will also rule him out of Saturday's Manchester derby.

City have won just one of their past five games in all competitions but England defender John Stones believes leaders <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-and-napoli-left-with-work-to-do-after-anfield-draw-264987">Liverpool</a> will now face added pressure to stay at the top.

"It's very difficult to be out in front and you can sometimes be complacent and not do things you should do. That's when you can slip up," he said.

"We put a healthy pressure on our shoulders to say we can achieve this, and we can claw back points and close the gap. We're still the champions and we should have that healthy arrogance about it."

Guardiola rules out Manchester City January spree

Oli McBurnie's stoppage-time equaliser earned Sheffield United a 3-3 draw against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-sponsorships-march-on-despite-on-field-slip-ups-263140">Manchester United</a> at Bramall Lane in the Premier League on Sunday after the visitors had been on the verge of a thrilling comeback victory.

Coming into the contest on the back of one win in their last 10 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Premier League</a> away games, either side of the summer, Manchester were immediately on the back foot and had goalkeeper David de Gea to thank for keeping them in the match early on.

They could not hold out for long, though, and John Fleck bundled home the opener in the 19th minute after De Gea had denied John Lundstram.

The home side did not relent, creating plenty more openings and pressing their opponents at every opportunity. Seven minutes after the interval they went 2-0 up, with Lys Mousset drilling home his fourth goal of the season.

United looked dead and buried as they struggled to get back into the contest after the break but 19-year-old Brandon Williams's first senior goal 18 minutes from time sparked them into life.

Another academy graduate, Mason Greenwood, came off the bench to level things up five minutes later, before Marcus Rashford completed the turnaround in the 79th minute with a fierce strike, earning United a possible win reminiscent of the Alex Ferguson years.

However, substitute McBurnie denied the visitors in stoppage time to add a further twist to the breathless encounter, squeezing a strike past De Gea, with the goal awarded after a lengthy <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/english-premier-league-promises-to-improve-and-speed-up-var-use-262258">VAR review</a>.

English Premier League: Manchester United denied comeback win by late McBurnie equaliser

Leicester&nbsp;City manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/leicester-beat-saints-9-0-in-record-english-top-flight-away-win-258277">Brendan Rodgers</a> says they will not be selling players in the January transfer window but could make additions if an opportunity to improve the squad comes their way.

Rodgers, who took charge in February, has guided&nbsp;Leicester&nbsp;to second in the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mourinho-pledges-passion-after-being-named-spurs-boss-263591"> Premier League</a> on 26 points from 12 games this season, eight points behind leaders Liverpool.

The club sold centre back Harry Maguire to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mourinho-pledges-passion-after-being-named-spurs-boss-263591">Manchester United</a> for around 80 million pounds ($103.30 million) in the close season and Rodgers does not want to lose any more of his core group as they seek a return to the Champions League.

"We have absolutely no plans to lose anyone in January," Rodgers told reporters. "Our job is to keep what we have.

"If there's an opportunity to improve the squad we will look to do that. If not, we will carry on with the squad we have, which is very strong."

British media have linked 22-year-old midfielder James Maddison to United since his breakthrough campaign last season and his stock has risen since he was called up by England manager Gareth Southgate during the recent international break.

Maddison, who had seven goals and seven assists last season, has already scored four times and notched two assists in 11 league games in the current campaign.

"He has shown he is a big-game player," Rodgers said. "He has scored goals against Liverpool, against Tottenham, against Arsenal (this season).

"James is among a lot of very good players with England and it's just about preference, whether Gareth and his staff want to pick him. You can see he is at the level.

"If not, he will continue to work. He doesn't expect to play, he's not entitled, but he loves playing and will hopefully get many more caps for his country."

England's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Premier League</a> has promised to improve and speed up the use of the VAR system following several controversial decisions and widespread criticism from fans and pundits.

The Premier League, using the technology for the first time this season, said in a statement that VAR was discussed at length during a shareholders meeting on Thursday and Mike Riley, its chief referee, accepted that "improvement is required".

"The Premier League and PGMOL (match officials) committed to improving the consistency of decisions, speeding up processes and increasing communication to fans," it said.

Riley told clubs that speed and consistency of decision-making "are priority areas of work and will improve as the officials become more experienced with the technology and protocols".

More information will be provided to fans, such as explaining why an incident was being looked at, Riley said.

"Ensuring the pace and tempo of Premier League football remains an important focus for clubs," the statement added.

"The core principles of VAR were reiterated. These are minimum interference for maximum benefit, maintaining the pace and tempo of Premier League football and correcting clear and obvious on-field errors."

Unlike other leagues which use VAR, such as Serie A and the Bundesliga, Premier League referees do not routinely view incidents on the pitchside monitor and this is to remained unchanged.

"It was reemphasised that it would be reserved for unseen incidents, or when information from the VAR is outside the expectation range of the referee," said the statement.

Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow told reporters there was a "very robust discussion".

"Messages to through to the league and the referees' association that fans are unhappy and many other stakeholders think we have got to do a whole lot better," he said.

English Premier League promises to improve and speed up VAR use

A day after<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../football-sterling-dropped-by-england-after- training-ground-disturbance-261542">&nbsp;Liverpool</a>'s&nbsp;Andy&nbsp;Robertson&nbsp;made his fourth assist of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../football-arsenals-under-fire-emery-gets-clubs- public-backing-261544">Premier League</a> season in Sunday's 3-1 victory over defending champions<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in- tatters-261238"> Manchester City</a>, he issued a challenge to fellow&nbsp;full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Scotland captain posted a short video clip on Twitter of himself smiling wryly with the caption "Realising you have more assists than @trentaa98" to which his teammate responded, "Come back in May."

The healthy rivalry between the Merseyside club's marauding&nbsp;full-backs&nbsp;has seen them create chances on par with some of the best forwards in the world, adding venom to&nbsp;Liverpool's&nbsp;already potent attack as they chase a first league title in 30 years.

"Me and Trent had big numbers last season in terms of contributing to goals and stuff, but it was more than that,"&nbsp;Robertson, 25, told&nbsp;Liverpool's&nbsp;website.

"Defensively we were also very good and this season we've tried to do the same. We just try and produce&nbsp;high&nbsp;standards&nbsp;in every single game ...&nbsp;it's not always possible."

Robertson&nbsp;and England's Alexander-Arnold have combined for 30 league assists,15 each, since August 2018 when Liverpool began to hit top gear under manager Juergen Klopp.

In the 12 games, the pair have started this season, Liverpool have conceded 10 goals with only second-placed Leicester City (eight) and Sheffield United (nine) letting in fewer.

Robertson&nbsp;hailed the remarkable progress of Liverpool-born<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../football-liverpools-alexander-arnold-eyes- captains-armband-259179"> Alexander-Arnold</a>, who is not far behind him with three assists this season.

"Trent is 21 and he's producing performances unbelievably and hopefully he keeps that up,"&nbsp;Robertson&nbsp;said.

"Hopefully the team keeps it up because we're doing well so far and there's confidence in that changing room."

More praise came from former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.

"Some of Trent's passing is as good as a midfielder's. I've played with Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso and I'd put him right up there," Crouch told the BBC in his role as an analyst.

"With what they do for this Liverpool team,&nbsp;Robertson&nbsp;and Alexander-Arnold are redefining the way&nbsp;full&nbsp;backs&nbsp;play."

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been given the club's public backing but the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-manchester-united-earn-3-1-win-over-brighton-261290">Premier League</a> side's hierarchy has warned the Spaniard that results must improve, the BBC reported on Monday.

Emery's position is under the spotlight after two wins in Arsenal's last 10 league games with the latest setback coming in a 2-0 defeat at high-flying Leicester City on Saturday.

However, the sixth-placed London club's head of football Raul Sanllehi and managing director Vinai Venkatesham have no immediate plans to make a change of manager.

"We firmly believe Unai is the right man for the job," the BBC reported them as telling more than 200 staff from across the club at a pre-planned meeting on Monday.

"We are as disappointed as everyone else with both our results and performances at this stage of the season.

"We share the frustration with our fans, Unai, players and all our staff as they are not at the level we want or expect. Things need to improve to meet our objectives for the season."

"We are all working intensively behind the scenes to turn things around and are confident we will."

Emery, 48, was appointed as Arsene Wenger's successor in May 2018 and his first season ended with a 4-1 Europa League final loss to Chelsea, having missed out on the top four by a point.

The currently have 17 points from 12 games and are eight points adrift of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-costas-stoppage-time-gem-sends-juventus-into-last-16-260436">Champions League</a> places.

Wolverhampton Wanderers shrugged off their midweek <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/europa-league-manchester-united-brush-partizan-aside-to-reach-last-32-260704">Europa League</a> exertions to comfortably beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Sunday's Midlands derby with goals by Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez.

After a slow start to the season, and despite already playing 24 games, Wolves are gathering momentum and a comfortable win lifted them to eighth in the Premier League.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side are unbeaten in the league since September&nbsp;14 and enter the international break in high spirits.

"I'm happy with the performance. We played really good. When you produce so many good things, you want more (goals)," he said. "We always have a threat on the break."

Villa, on the other hand, remain one place above the bottom three after a difficult afternoon that began when they had to replace injured keeper Jed Steer to injury after five minutes.

With first-choice keeper Tom Heaton missing it meant a debut for Orjan Nyland in the heat of a local derby.

Wolves dominated and the only surprise was it took them until nearly halftime to go ahead.

Villa's defence switched off from a free kick and Joao Moutinho pulled the ball back for the unmarked Neves to power an unstoppable shot inside the right-hand post.

Another injury for Villa led to left back Matt Targett being replaced before the interval but the visitors showed more endeavour after the break to at least stay in the game.

Wolves should have been well clear with Adama Traore's thunderous drive smashing against the crossbar, while Jimenez and Diogo Jota also missed good opportunities.

Villa threatened to equalise on the odd occasions, once when Wesley curled a shot wide, but Wolves effectively sealed the points when Jimenez fired into the corner after good work by the dangerous Traore, a former Villa player.

There was some consolation for Villa when Trezeguet halved the deficit in stoppage time but it was too late.

Wolves's first Premier League win over Villa for eight years lifted them to 16 points from 12 games while Villa remain fourth from bottom with 11 points.

Villa manager Dean Smith did not use the injuries as excuses, saying his side failed to match Wolves' desire.

"That's as bad a first 45 minutes I've had since Wigan away last year. Very poor, didn't start," he said.

"It appeared the game was bigger for them than it was for us, we didn't win any balls, duels, didn't pass it well.

"The best thing I got out of the first half was it was only 1-0 at halftime."

Premier League: Wolves beat Villa to move into top eight

Manchester United climbed back into the top half of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Premier League</a> table on Sunday, as goals from Andreas Pereira and Marcus Rashford and an own goal from Davy Propper gave the side a 3-1 home win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

United climbed to seventh place on 16 points from 12 games after stretching their unbeaten home run against the Seagulls to 12 matches in all competitions. Brighton slipped to 11th place on 15 points.

The home side benefited from a fine individual display by Anthony Martial, who set up two goals and ran tirelessly at Brighton's defenders.

Manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-manchester-uniteds-attacking-trio-gives-solskjaer-reason-for-optimism-260729">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> praised the Frenchman alongside 19-year-old left back Brandon Williams.

"Anthony Martial did not get a goal but he was outstanding," Solskjaer told the BBC.

"Brandon Williams was excellent too, he has had some good games already and he seems he wants to be out there and enjoy himself.

"We should have scored many more goals. It was an excellent performance from the lads, when you see them going forward it is a joy to watch."

Pereira fired United ahead in the 17th minute with a fortuitous goal, as his shot from inside the penalty area took a heavy deflection off Dale Stephens and left Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan stranded.

Pereira initially lost control of the ball as he raced forward before Martial unselfishly teed up the rebound for the Brazilian to hit a left-foot shot.

Propper then bundled the ball into his own net two minutes later as an inswinging free kick from Fred caused havoc in Brighton's six-yard box. The goal was awarded after a VAR check.

Lewis Dunk pulled one back for Brighton in the 64th minute with a close-range header, but Rashford restored United's two-goal advantage two minutes later when he blasted in a shot from 12 metres off the underside of the bar.

Again the goal resulted from good work by Martial, who beat a defender and Ryan to the ball before squaring it back for Rashford from a tight angle.

United missed several chances in the closing stages to win by a bigger margin, with Rashford guilty of two glaring misses while Ryan pulled off some superb saves.

The match ended on a sour note for United midfielder Scott McTominay, who limped off injured moments before the final whistle after an innocuous-looking duel.

Premier League: Manchester United earn 3-1 win over Brighton

There is still more than six months of the Premier League season left, with 26 games and no doubt many plot twists ahead, but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool's 3-1 win </a>over Manchester City on Sunday had the feel of a changing of the guard at the pinnacle of English football.

It was not so much the maths, though Liverpool's nine-point advantage over defending champions City, with a point less over Leicester City and Chelsea, is a significant gap, especially as<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-liverpools-klopp-unsure-how-he-will-approach-two-games-in-24-hours-260260"> Juergen Klopp's</a> side have lost one league game in 18 months.

But it was the manner of Liverpool's victory at Anfield which suggested that the fans' nearly 30-year wait for a domestic league title may be coming to a close.

City were by no means poor, and played their part in an entertaining encounter, but Liverpool were better in every department.

Klopp's side were sharper in attack, where Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both found the target, more solid at the back and in the midfield were faster, stronger, harder and more incisive, as always helped by their rampaging full-backs.

Liverpool are European champions after overpowering teams of the calibre of Barcelona, bullying them physically, ripping them apart with speedy bursts down the flanks from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson and through ruthless finishing.

City, though, have won the past two Premier League titles thanks to their technical brilliance and mastery of possession football which they executed with relentless consistency.

However, this season Liverpool have matched that level of consistency, unbeaten and with 11 wins from 12, they arrived at this game with the only question being whether they could cope with the unique challenge of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-guardiola-is-the-best-manager-in-the-world-juergen-klopp-260679">Pep Guardiola's</a> City machine.

The only conclusion after 90 minutes of high quality football was that Liverpool have no weak spots. It is hard to think of any team in the world who would enter the intimidating atmosphere of Anfield confident of leaving with a win.

City, in contrast, have had a major weakness exposed due to injuries and made an unfathomable mistake in the transfer market by not replacing former captain Vincent Kompany when he left the club in the close-season and that has come back to bite them.

City inexplicably given their huge resources, went into this season with just three established central defenders -- John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte.

Given that Laporte has been sidelined by injury since August and Otamendi's form has been haphazard at best, City went to Anfield with midfielder Fernandinho filling in alongside Stones.

Liverpool in contrast were able to replace Virgil van Dijk's injured defensive partner Joel Matip with the experienced Croatian Dejan Lovren and still had England international Joe Gomez in reserve on the bench.

There was no glaring error from City's defenders but there was an air of vulnerability about them throughout the game and the sense of certainty that Liverpool would punish Guardiola's back line for any slip-up.

Last season, City delivered a tactically mature and disciplined performance in a goalless draw at Anfield but, as Guardiola conceded, this game was more similar to the 2018 Champions League quarter-final, where City were blown apart after going two goals down in the opening 20 minutes.

“If you give them an inch, they will take that and score goals," said City's Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, who grabbed their late consolation goal.

"That’s what happens. You can play better than Liverpool and be 2-0 or 3-0 behind. They are maybe the best team in the world with their counter-attack, second balls and set pieces."

City will recover from this loss, surely will strengthen their defence in the January transfer window and it would be a foolish pundit who writes them off.

"It’s still November and we still have games to play. We’re not in an ideal position – we don’t want to lose games – and we have to improve," said Silva. “We were in this position last season. We’ll never give up."

Liverpool's protestations that this game decided nothing were inevitable but there was no hiding the desire Klopp has to deliver that long absent league title.

"Nine points, you cannot imagine that something like this happens," said the German. "But it's not important because who wants to be first in early November? We want to be first in May."

They are maybe the best team in the world with their counter-attack, second balls and set pieces." City will recover from this loss, surely will strengthen their defence in the January transfer window and it would be a foolish pundit who writes them off. "It’s still November and we still have games to play. We’re not in an ideal position – we don’t want to lose games – and we have to improve," said Silva. “We were in this position last season. We’ll never give up." Liverpool's protestations that this game decided nothing were inevitable but there was no hiding the desire Klopp has to deliver that long absent league title. "Nine points, you cannot imagine that something like this happens," said the German. "But it's not important because who wants to be first in early November? We want to be first in May."

Premier League: Liverpool win over City suggests long wait may come to an end

Manchester City players were left fuming in the dressing room after watching replays of Liverpool's controversial opening goal in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">3-1 loss</a> at Anfield on Sunday, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has said.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to handle the ball inside his own box in the sixth minute but instead of a City penalty the hosts broke and 22 seconds later Fabinho drilled in a spectacular goal from outside the box.

The goal was checked by VAR and allowed to stand as Liverpool went on to clinch the victory and move nine points clear of City in the Premier League title race.

"We saw the incident again in the dressing room afterwards and for me, obviously, it's a penalty - but if you ask a Liverpool player they would say, 'You can give it but it's maybe a 50-50 situation,'" Gundogan told reporters.

"It takes a tough mentality to fight against that and unfortunately they scored the second straight after."

City are aiming to become the first team since Manchester United in 2009 to win three consecutive Premier League titles but now occupy fourth spot in the table.

Last season, City recovered in the second half of the campaign to erase Liverpool's 10-point lead at the top and Gundogan wants the same level of commitment from his team mates.

"We have to accept it, but there is a long way to go. Last season in January we were quite far behind and able to turn it around," Gundogan added.

Manchester United manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-manchester-uniteds-attacking-trio-gives-solskjaer-reason-for-optimism-260729">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer </a>said his players produced their best all-round display of the season as they powered past Brighton &amp; Hove Albion 3-1 to move up to seventh in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Premier League</a>.

Midfielder Andreas Pereira and striker Marcus Rashford scored either side of a Davy Propper own goal on Sunday to hand United their biggest home league win since the opening weekend of the campaign in August.

There was a sense of optimism at Old Trafford as United continued to attack late in the second half to extend their lead, with Fred, Anthony Martial and Rashford testing Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

"I think it's our best performance of the season," Solskjaer told reporters. "How we didn't end up with five, six, or seven we don't know, but exhilarating and entertaining and great to see the boys enjoy themselves."

United's front three of Rashford, Martial and Daniel James showed electric pace on counter-attacks but Solskjaer reserved special praise for 19-year-old left back Brandon Williams, who was impressive in his first league start.

Solskjaer selected Williams ahead of experienced Argentine international Marcos Rojo in the starting lineup, and said that it will be difficult not to pick him again.

"Brandon was excellent. He's played well before, but first start at Old Trafford in a Premier League game, you don't know how he's going to react," Solskjaer added.

"He's done nothing wrong since he's come in and making it hard for me (to leave him out), definitely."

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his players produced their best all-round display of the season as they powered past Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 to move up to seventh in the Premier League.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has hailed Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as the best manager in the world as the Premier League rivals gear up for Sunday's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-sense-chance-to-leave-city-in-their-wake-260408">top-of-the-table clash</a> at Anfield.

Leaders Liverpool have a six-point advantage over the defending champions and the match is a crucial one for both sides.

The build-up has been coloured by Guardiola saying Liverpool's Sadio Mane sometimes dived and then backtracking.

Klopp, who has taken a dig at City's "tactical fouling", drew a line under the verbal sparring on Thursday in an interview with Sky Sports television.

"We constantly get asked questions and sometimes we say what is in that second in our mind without thinking about anything else, that we are in public, that there is a camera," said the German.

"I couldn’t have more respect for Pep Guardiola, that’s how it is. I’ve known him for so long, for me still it’s a big thing to be his contender.

"For me he's the best manager in the world and we have the chance to win against his team which is very difficult but possible. That's enough for me."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-klopp-refuses-to-be-distracted-by-manchester-city-as-liverpool-welcome-genk-260004">Klopp</a> dismissed a suggestion that the match was as much one Liverpool could not afford to lose as must win.

"For me, it's a 100 per cent&nbsp;want-to-win game,100 per cent&nbsp;with all I have," he said. "We want to win and we try everything to make that happen, which is difficult enough. And then after that we will see how the situation is and use that situation.

"Last year's performance of City at Liverpool was probably the biggest show of respect I ever got, that one of my teams ever got, because they played different to what they usually do," said Klopp.

"I expect a tight game. How exactly it will be, I don't know."

Southampton have a fully fit squad to choose from when they play Everton in Saturday's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-sense-chance-to-leave-city-in-their-wake-260408">Premier League</a> match with both winger Moussa Djenepo and defender Cedric Soares back from injuries, manager Ralph Hasenhuettl said on Thursday.

Djenepo, who scored two winners in Saints' only wins this season, had been sidelined with a muscle injury since September before making his return in a six-minute cameo in the 2-1 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-stroll-to-3-1-league-cup-win-over-southampton-258735">loss at Manchester City</a> last weekend.

Cedric also missed more than a month as he nursed a calf injury and his return gives Hasenhuettl plenty of options, with only left-back Ryan Bertrand suspended after he was sent off in the 9-0 humbling by Leicester City last month.

"So far good, Moussa is back, Cedric is back," Hasenhuettl told reporters. "They can train with the team.

"Moussa is one of the only guys who has scored important goals for us so far, so he's a big option for the weekend. He gives our a game a new part, which we've missed. He can be a boost for us.

"We have all players on board now, so I have more options. Ryan Bertrand is still suspended but everyone else is fit."

Southampton are 18th in the standings with eight points and the worst goal difference in the league (-17) and, barring a freak scoreline, will remain in the relegation zone even if they beat 17th-placed Everton who have 11 points.

"This is a six-point game," the Austrian coach said. "Every game is important but they are right on the line... This is, for sure, an important game for them too."

"We played against (most of) the top eight clubs so far. Now we're playing fixtures against the bottom teams," he added, referring to upcoming games against Watford, Norwich City and Newcastle United after they play Arsenal later this month.

Southampton are yet to win at home this season, with a draw and four defeats, and Hasenhuettl said it was up to the team to give the home fans something to cheer about when they face Everton.

"We don't have to ask too much (of the fans), we have to deliver," he said. "When we deliver, we can be sure they will help us.

"We have to show up and show a reaction at home and give them the feeling that we're doing everything to win this game."

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has stripped Granit Xhaka of the captaincy and left him out of the Premier League side's squad for their Europa League game against Portugal's Vitoria.

"I had a meeting with him and told him he is no longer in the captain's group," the Mirror website quoted the Spaniard as telling reporters on Tuesday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang takes over the permanent role, although he was also not in the 18-man travelling squad for the match in Guimaraes and Hector Bellerin is likely to stand in instead.

"He (Xhaka) accepted my decision. We need to carry on and focus on tomorrow's match. I needed to take a decision and now it's closed," said Emery.

Arsenal are top of Group F after three consecutive victories.

The Swiss midfielder has been in the spotlight since he reacted angrily to home fans booing him after he was substituted during Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on October&nbsp;27.

Xhaka has not played for the club since then.

Last Thursday he released an emotional statement to defend his actions, which included storming off the pitch and down the tunnel and said he had reached a "boiling point" following repeated threats from fans to his wife and daughter.

Referee Martin Atkinson initially showed a yellow card but then produced a red card - an automatic three-match ban - after a VAR intervention, with the Premier League stating Son, had endangered Gomes' safety with his initial challenge.
