India on Sunday (May 17) rejected the reported comments made by Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten on media freedom and minority rights in the country. In a firm rebuttal, New Delhi said that such concerns arise from “lack of understanding” about India’s history, cultural diversity and democracy. This comes during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands, where the Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George addressed questions raised by reporters during a media conference.“We face these kinds of questions basically because of the lack of understanding of the person who asks the question,” George said at the Hague.“India is a country of 1.4 billion people, the largest populated country in the world. It’s a diverse country – diversity in terms of culture, diversity in terms of languages, diversity in terms of food, diversity in terms of religion,” he said.Describing India’s electoral process as evidence of the country’s democratic strength, he said, “Recently, we had elections. You need to know what the level of participation was. More than 90 per cent of the electorate voted. This is the beauty of India.”Calling India a “vibrant democracy”, George said that the country has progressed economically to eliminate poverty without compromising on democratic principles. “We did not go for violence to eliminate poverty. We went through the democratic process to eliminate poverty,” he said.“We are one-sixth of the total population of the world but not one-sixth of the problems of the world. A report claiming the Indian government was considering a tax or cess on foreign travel was retracted by CNBC-TV18 on Friday (May 15) after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a rare move, personally intervened on X to call it "totally false". The rare rebuttal by a sitting prime minister prompted the channel to unambiguously post a correction: "Our story on government considering tax/cess on foreign travel is not accurate. We withdraw the story and regret the error."
What was the issue?
The original CNBC-TV18 report, citing unnamed sources, claimed that a proposal to levy a cess, tax or surcharge on foreign travel was being discussed "at the highest levels" of the government. It said any such levy would flow directly to the Centre and fall outside the divisible pool shared with states. The report linked the proposal to the fiscal strain caused by the ongoing West Asia conflict, framing it as a temporary, one-year measure to cushion the impact of rising crude oil and import costs. The report was posted without a response from the Finance Ministry. Also read | Why did India hike petrol, diesel prices after 4 years of near-stability?
PM Modi's appeal to Indians
This comes at a sensitive time, as the GOI on 15 May 2026 increased the price of Petrol and Diesel across the country by Rs 3/litre. The government has been pushing a broader austerity message in recent weeks, with Modi himself urging citizens to reduce non-essential foreign travel, cut back on gold purchases and conserve foreign exchange reserves amid economic pressure from the global energy crisis triggered by the US-Iran war. He also recommended work from home (WFH), following which multiple states have issued WFH advisories. Also read | How does India's petrol, diesel price hike compare to global rates? A report claiming the Indian government was considering a tax or cess on foreign travel was retracted by CNBC-TV18 on Friday (May 15) after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a rare move, personally intervened on X to call it "totally false". The rare rebuttal by a sitting prime minister prompted the channel to unambiguously post a correction: "Our story on government considering tax/cess on foreign travel is not accurate. We withdraw the story and regret the error." What was the issue?
